The wide variety of molecular architectures used in sensors and biosensors and the large amount of data generated with some principles of detection have motivated the use of computational methods, such as information visualization techniques, not only to handle the data but also to optimize sensing performance. In this study, we combine projection techniques with micro-Raman scattering and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to address critical issues related to practical applications of electronic tongues (e-tongues) based on impedance spectroscopy. Experimentally, we used sensing units made with thin films of a perylene derivative (AzoPTCD acronym), coating Pt interdigitated electrodes, to detect CuCl(2) (Cu(2+)), methylene blue (MB), and saccharose in aqueous solutions, which were selected due to their distinct molecular sizes and ionic character in solution. The AzoPTCD films were deposited from monolayers to 120 nm via Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques. Because the main aspects investigated were how the interdigitated electrodes are coated by thin films (architecture on e-tongue) and the film thickness, we decided to employ the same material for all sensing units. The capacitance data were projected into a 2D plot using the force scheme method, from which we could infer that at low analyte concentrations the electrical response of the units was determined by the film thickness. Concentrations at 10 mu M or higher could be distinguished with thinner films tens of nanometers at most-which could withstand the impedance measurements, and without causing significant changes in the Raman signal for the AzoPTCD film-forming molecules. The sensitivity to the analytes appears to be related to adsorption on the film surface, as inferred from Raman spectroscopy data using MB as analyte and from the multidimensional projections. The analysis of the results presented may serve as a new route to select materials and molecular architectures for novel sensors and biosensors, in addition to suggesting ways to unravel the mechanisms behind the high sensitivity obtained in various sensors.

We study magneto-optical properties of monolayer graphene by means of quantum field theory methods in the framework of the Dirac model. We reveal a good agreement between the Dirac model and a recent experiment on giant Faraday rotation in cyclotron resonance [23]. We also predict other regimes when the effects are well pronounced. The general dependence of the Faraday rotation and absorption on various parameters of samples is revealed both for suspended and epitaxial graphene.

Mannan-binding lectin (MBL) is an important protein of the innate immune system and protects the body against infection through opsonization and activation of the complement system on surfaces with an appropriate presentation of carbohydrate ligands. The quaternary structure of human MBL is built from oligomerization of structural units into polydisperse complexes typically with three to eight structural units, each containing three lectin domains. Insight into the connection between the structure and ligand-binding properties of these oligomers has been lacking. In this article, we present an analysis of the binding to neoglycoprotein-coated surfaces by size-fractionated human MBL oligomers studied with small-angle x-ray scattering and surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy. The MBL oligomers bound to these surfaces mainly in two modes, with dissociation constants in the micro to nanomolar order. The binding kinetics were markedly influenced by both the density of ligands and the number of ligand-binding domains in the oligomers. These findings demonstrated that the MBL-binding kinetics are critically dependent on structural characteristics on the nanometer scale, both with regard to the dimensions of the oligomer, as well as the ligand presentation on surfaces. Therefore, our work suggested that the surface binding of MBL involves recognition of patterns with dimensions on the order of 10-20 nm. The recent understanding that the surfaces of many microbes are organized with structural features on the nanometer scale suggests that these properties of MBL ligand recognition potentially constitute an important part of the pattern-recognition ability of these polyvalent oligomers. A thorough search for large-scale anisotropies in the distribution of arrival directions of cosmic rays detected above 10(18) eV at the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. This search is performed as a function of both declination and right ascension in several energy ranges above 10(18) eV, and reported in terms of dipolar and quadrupolar coefficients. Within the systematic uncertainties, no significant deviation from isotropy is revealed. Assuming that any cosmic-ray anisotropy is dominated by dipole and quadrupole moments in this energy range, upper limits on their amplitudes are derived. These upper limits allow us to test the origin of cosmic rays above 10(18) eV from stationary Galactic sources densely distributed in the Galactic disk and predominantly emitting light particles in all directions.

Objective Genetic sonography following first-trimester combined screening appears to increase substantially detection rates for Down syndrome but it relies on the unproved assumption of independence between these tests. In this study we aimed to investigate the relationship between first-trimester nuchal translucency (NT) and a series of second-trimester soft markers and structural defects in unaffected pregnancies. Methods NT measurement in the first trimester was followed by second-trimester scan (18 to 23 + 6 weeks) including examination for three categorical markers (intracardiac echogenic foci, hyperechogenic bowel and structural defects) and measurement of nasal bone length, nuchal-fold thickness, femur length, humerus length, renal pelvis diameter and prenasal thickness. All continuous variables were expressed in multiples of the median (MoM) for gestation and correlation coefficients between log-transformed NT and second-trimester variables were calculated. In addition, frequencies of soft markers and structural defects in cases with increased NT were compared to those with normal NT, using MoM cut-offs. Results In a dataset of 1970 cases, NT was significantly correlated (P < 0.05) with all second-trimester continuous variables, the correlation being strongest for nuchal-fold thickness (r = 0.10). There was a higher frequency of cases with second-trimester nuchal-fold thickness above the 97.5th centile (10.7 vs. 2.2%) and hyperechogenic bowel (2.4 vs. 0.1%) in cases with increased NT. Conclusions Straightforward reassessment of risk using likelihood ratios derived from the second-trimester genetic sonogram might lead to inaccurate estimates. Multivariate models using continuous second-trimester variables might be preferable in sequential screening strategies. Copyright. 2012 ISUOG. Published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Background: There are no available statistical data about sudden cardiac death in Brazil. Therefore, this study has been conducted to evaluate the incidence of sudden cardiac death in our population and its implications. Methods: The research methodology was based on Thurstone's Law of Comparative Judgment, whose premise is that the more an A stimulus differs from a B stimulus, the greater will be the number of people who will perceive this difference. This technique allows an estimation of actual occurrences from subjective perceptions, when compared to official statistics. Data were collected through telephone interviews conducted with Primary and Secondary Care physicians of the Public Health Service in the Metropolitan Area of Sao Paulo (MASP). Results: In the period from October 19, 2009, to October 28, 2009, 196 interviews were conducted. The incidence of 21,270 cases of sudden cardiac death per year was estimated by linear regression analysis of the physicians responses and data from the Mortality Information System of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, with the following correlation and determination coefficients: r = 0.98 and r2= 0.95 (95% confidence interval 0.81.0, P < 0.05). The lack of waiting list for specialized care and socioadministrative problems were considered the main barriers to tertiary care access. Conclusions: The incidence of sudden cardiac death in the MASP is high, and it was estimated as being higher than all other causes of deaths; the extrapolation technique based on the physicians perceptions was validated; and the most important bureaucratic barriers to patient referral to tertiary care have been identified. Vanadium oxide nanotubes constitute promising materials for applications in nanoelectronics as cathode materials, in sensor technology and in catalysis. In this work we present a study on hybrid vanadium oxide/hexadecylamine multiwall nanotubes doped with Co ions using state of the art x-ray diffraction and absorption techniques, to address the issue of the dopant location within the nanotubes' structure. The x-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis shows that the Co ions in the nanotubes are in the 2+ oxidation state, while extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy reveals the local environment of the Co2+ ions. Results indicate that Co atoms are exchanged at the interface between the vanadium oxide's layers and the hexadecylamines, reducing the amount of amine chains and therefore the interlayer distance, but preserving the tubular shape. The findings in this work are important for describing Co2+ interaction with vanadium oxide nanotubes at the molecular level and will help to improve the understanding of their physicochemical behavior, which is desired in view of their promising applications.

According to the classification of placental types among animals, the transfer of iron through the placenta can occur via: absorption connected to transferin through the outer surface of the trophoblast in direct contact with circulating maternal blood; absorption of the erythrocytes by the chorionic epithelium in direct contact with accumulation of blood extravased from haemotophagous areas; absorption by the chorionic epithelium in direct contact with iron enriched secretions from the endometrial glands and absorption by extravasations of the blood in the maternal-fetal surface and the subsequent phagocytosis of the erythrocytes by trophoblast cells described in bovine, small ruminants, canine and feline. The function of erythrophagocytosis observed after the extravasation of blood in the maternal-fetal interface is undefined in several species. Possibly, the iron is transferred to the fetus through the trophoblastic erythrophagocytosis in the hemophogous area of the placenta and also in the endometrial glands. In this literature survey, new methods of studies regarding placental transfer involving iron and other nutrients necessary for survival and maintenance of embryonic fetus to birth are proposed.

Clay-containing nanocomposites of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-polystyrene (SEBS) copolymers having cylindrical domains were obtained by melt extrusion using a tape die. One type of sample (SEBS-MA) had maleic anhydride attached to the middle block. Two types of organoclays were added, namely Cloisite 20A and Cloisite 30B. Small angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses showed that the addition of 20A clay to SEBS and SEBS-MA resulted in nanocomposites with intercalated and partially exfoliated structures, respectively. The addition of 30B clay to SEBS and SEBS-MA promoted the formation of composites containing relatively large micron-sized and partially exfoliated clay particles, respectively. Our TEM analysis revealed that clay particles embedded in SEBS are preferably in contact with the polystyrene cylindrical domains, while in SEBS-MA they are in contact with the maleated matrix. The extrusion processing promoted alignment of the axes of the polystyrene cylinders along the extrusion direction in all samples, and the basal planes of the clay particles were mostly parallel to the main external surfaces of the extruded tapes. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry.

[EN] The expression and regulation of intestinal oligopeptide transporter (PepT)-1 when vegetable sources are used as a substitute for fish meal in the diet of marine fish has not yet been explored. In the present study, as part of our ongoing work on elucidating PepT1 gene expression in relation to different dietary treatments, we have now isolated and deposited in Genbank database (accession no. GU733710) a cDNA sequence representing the PepT1 in the sea bream (Sparus aurata). The ?de novo? prediction of the three-dimensional structure of PepT1 protein is presented. We also analyzed diet-induced changes in the expression of PepT1 mRNA via real-time RT-PCR using the standard curve method. Sea bream were fed for 140 days with one of the following four diet formulations (43% protein/21% lipid): a control fast growth-promoting diet (C), and three diets with the same formulation but in which 15% of the fish meal was substituted by protein concentrates either from lupine (LPC), chick pea (CPC), or green pea (PPC). Fish fed PPC had significantly (p < 0.05) lower levels of PepT1 transcripts in the proximal intestine than the controls, whereas PepT1 transcript levels in fish fed LPC or CPC were not significantly different from the controls. Although growth was similar between fish fed with different diets during the first 72 days of feeding, growth of the fish fed with PPC was reduced during the second part of the trial and was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than fish fed LPC and CPC diets by the end of the experiment. Correlation between these results and fish growth performances highlights that the intestinal PepT1 mRNA level may serve as a useful marker of the dietary protein quality and absorption efficiency.

Tuber borchii (Ascomycota, order Pezizales) is highly valued truffle sold in local markets in Italy. Despite its economic importance, knowledge on its distribution and population variation is scarce. The objective of this work was to investigate the evolutionary forces shaping the genetic structure of this fungus using coalescent and phylogenetic methods to reconstruct the evolutionary history of populations in Italy. To assess population structure, 61 specimens were collected from 11 different Provinces of Italy. Sampling was stratified across hosts and habitats to maximize coverage in native oak and pine stands and both mychorrizae and fruiting bodies were collected. Samples were identified considering anatomo-morphological characters. DNA was extracted and both multilocus (AFLP) and single-locus (18 loci from rDNA, nDNA, and mtDNA) approaches were used to look for polymorphisms. Screening AFLP profiles, both Jaccard and Dice coefficients of similarity were utilized to transform binary matrix into a distance matrix and then to desume Neighbour-Joining trees. Though these are only preliminary examinations, phylogenetic trees were totally concordant with those deriving from single locus analyses. Phylogenetic analyses of the nuclear loci were performed using maximum likelihood with PAUP and a combined phylogenetic inference, using Bayesian estimation with all nuclear gene regions, was carried out. To reconstruct the evolutionary history, we estimated recurrent migration, migration across the history of the sample, and estimated the mutation and approximate age of mutations in each tree using SNAP Workbench. The combined phylogenetic tree using Bayesian estimation suggests that there are two main haplotypes that are difficult to be differentiated on the basis of morphology, of ecological parameters and symbiontic tree. Between these two lineages, that occur in sympatry within T. borchii populations, there is no evidence of recurrent migration. However, migration over the history of the sample was asymmetrical suggesting that isolation was a result of interrupted gene flow followed by range expansion. Low levels of divergence between the haplotypes indicate that there are likely to be two cryptic species within the T. borchii population sampled. Our results suggest that isolation between populations of T. borchii could have led to reproductive isolation between two lineages. This isolation is likely due to sympatric speciation caused by a multiple colonization from different refugia or a recent isolation. In attempting to determinate whether these haplotypes represent separate species or a partition of the same species we applied Biological and Mechanistic species Concepts. Notwithstanding, further analyses are necessary to evaluate if selection favoured premating or post-mating isolation.

In dieser Arbeit wird das Phasenverhalten fluid-kristallin und kristallin-amorph, die elastischen Eigenschaften, das Nukleationsverhalten und das diffusive Verhalten ladungsstabilisierter Kolloide aus sphärischen Polystyrol- und Polytetrafluorethylenpartikeln in wässerigen Dispersionsmitteln bei sehr geringem Fremdionengehalt systematisch untersucht. Die dazugehörigen Messungen werden an einer neuartigen selbstkonstruierten Kombinationslichtstreuapparatur durchgeführt, die die Meßmethoden der dynamischen Lichtstreuung, statischen Lichtstreuung und Torsionsresonanzspektroskopie in sich vereint. Die drei Meßmethoden sind optimal auf die Untersuchung kolloidaler Festkörper abgestimmt. Das elastische Verhalten der Festkörper kann sehr gut durch die Elastizitätstheorie atomarer Kristallsysteme beschrieben werden, wenn ein Debye-Hückel-Potential im Sinne des Poisson-Boltzmann-Cell Modells als Wechselwirkungspotential verwendet wird. Die ermittelten Phasengrenzen fluid-kristallin stehen erstmalig in guter Übereinstimmung mit Ergebnissen aus molekulardynamischen Simulationen, wenn die in der Torsionsresonanzspektroskopie bestimmte Wechselwirkungsenergie zu Grunde gelegt wird. Neben der Gleichgewichtsstruktur sind Aussagen zur Verfestigungskinetik möglich. Das gefundene Nukleationserhalten kann gut durch die klassische Nukleationstheorie beschrieben werden, wenn bei niedriger Unterkühlung der Schmelze ein Untergrund heterogener Keimung berücksichtigt wird. PTFE-Partikel zeigen auch bei hohen Konzentrationen nur geringfügige Mehrfachstreuung. Durch ihren Einsatz ist erstmals eine systematische Untersuchung des Glasübergangs in hochgeladenen ladungsstabilisierten Systemen möglich. Ladungsstabilisierte Kolloide unterscheiden sich vor allem durch ihre extreme Kristallisationstendenz von früher untersuchten Hartkugelsystemen. Bei hohen Partikelkonzentrationen (Volumenbrüche größer 10 Prozent) kann ein glasartiger Festkörper identifiziert werden, dessen physikalisches Verhalten die Existenz eines Bernalglases nahe legt. Der Glasübergang ist im Vergleich mit den in anderen kolloidalen Systemen und atomaren Systemen beobachteten Übergängen von sehr unterschiedlichem Charakter. Im verwendeten PTFE-System ist auf Grund der langreichweitigen stark repulsiven Wechselwirkung kein direkter Zugang des Glaszustandes aus der übersättigten Schmelze möglich. Der amorphe Festkörper entsteht hier aus einer nanokristallinen Phase. Die Keimrate steigt im zugänglichen Meßbereich annähernd exponentiell mit der Partikelanzahldichte, so daß man feststellen kann, daß der Glaszustand nicht durch Unterdrückung der Nukleation, sondern durch eine Forcierung derselben erreicht wird.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden Untersuchungen zur Aufklärung des Versagens thermisch verschweißter Polymergrenzflächen (hier: Polymethylmethacrylat) durchgeführt. Solch ein Wissen kommt in der Praxis bei sogenannten Sollbruchstellen zum Einsatz. Dabei muss die Grenzschicht bis zu einer bestimmten Belastungsintensität stabil bleiben bei höherer Belastung jedoch brechen. Zudem ist eine stabile Risspropagation entlang der Grenzschicht wichtig.Neben der Bruchstabilitätsbestimmung mit Hilfe des Double Cantilever Beam Tests wurden die beim Versagen der Grenzschicht entstandenen Defekte untersucht. Die Analyse der Bruchfläche erfolgte mit Mikroskopie und Höhenprofilometrie. Defekte im Volumen wurden durch Scanning-Ultra Small Angle X-ray Scattering und Scanning Microfokus-Small Angle X-ray Scattering untersucht.Im Modellsystem können Sollbruchstellen bis zu einer Belastungsintensität von maximal 280J/m² durch die Verschweißungsdauer eingestellt werden. Die Untersuchung der Bruchflächen lieferte ein kombiniertes Modell aus Ausheil- und Interdiffusionsprozess. Ferner folgt aus den Streuuntersuchungen, dass beim Modellsystem keine hochgeordneten Defektstrukturen vorliegen. Die entstandenen Strukturen folgen einem Modell diffuser Defektgrenzflächen. Über die gemessene Diffusivität kann zudem auf die Energiedissipation im Bereich um das Rissende geschlossen werden. Sie ist im unmittelbaren Rissbereich am Höchsten und nimmt mit Entfernung davon ab. Dabei haben die Defektbereiche eine Größe bis zu 650µm. Die Richtung der von außen angelegten Belastung spielt bei der räumlichen Orientierung der Defekte keine Rolle.

Kolloidale Suspensionen aus identischen kugelförmigen, geladenen Partikeln in wässrigen Medien stellen ein ideales Modellsystem zur Untersuchung des Gleichgewichtsverhaltens, aber auch des Nicht-Gleichgewichtsverhaltens Weicher Materie dar. So bilden derartige Systeme bei hinreichend starker und langreichweitiger elektrostatischer Repulsion fluid und kristallin geordnete Strukturen aus, die wegen der weitreichenden Analogie zu atomar kondensierter Materie als kolloidale Fluide und Kristalle bezeichnet werden. Von großem Vorteil ist dabei die Möglichkeit zur kontrollierten Einstellung der Wechselwirkung und die gute optische Zugänglichkeit für Mikroskopie und Lichtstreuung sowie die Weichheit der Materialien, aufgrund derer sich auch Zustände fernab des mechanischen Gleichgewichts gezielt präparieren lassen. Themenstellung der vorliegenden Arbeit ist die Untersuchung des Phasenverhaltens und der Fließmechanismen kolloidaler Kristalle in einer Rohrströmung. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wird gezeigt, dass beim Fluss durch eine zylindrische Röhre Mehrphasenkoexistenz auftritt, wobei ein polykristalliner Kern von einer isotropen Scherschmelze umgeben ist. Zusätzlich treten an der Grenze zwischen diesen Phasen und an der Rohrwand Phasen hexagonal geordneter übereinander hinweggleitender Lagen auf. Der Vergleich zwischen auf der Basis der Navier-Stokes-Gleichung theoretisch berechneten und gemessenen Geschwindigkeitsprofilen zeigt, dass jede dieser Phasen für sich Newtonsches Fließverhalten aufweist. Die Gesamtviskosität ist hingegen durch die mit dem Durchsatz veränderliche Phasenzusammensetzung Nicht-Newtonsch. Damit gelang es, die erstmalig von Würth beschriebene Scherverdünnung auf eine Veränderung der Phasenzusammensetzung zurückzuführen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wurde erstmals das Fließverhalten der Lagenphasen mittels Lichtstreuung und Korrelationsanalyse untersucht. Dafür wurde ein im Prinzip einfacher, aber leistungsstarker Aufbau realisiert, der es erlaubt, die zeitliche Veränderung der Bragg-Reflexe der Lagenphase in radialer und azimutaler Richtung zu verfolgen und mittels Fourieranalyse zu analysieren. In Abhängigkeit vom Durchsatz geht die zunächst rastend gleitende Lagenphase in eine frei gleitende Lagenphase über, wobei charakteristische Veränderungen der Spektren sowie der Korrelationsfunktionen auftreten, die detailliert diskutiert werden. Der Übergang im Gleitmechanismus ist mit einem Verlust der Autokorrelation der Rotationskomponente der periodischen Intra-Lagenverzerrung verbunden, während die Kompressionskomponente erhalten bleibt. Bei hohen Durchflüssen lassen die Reflexbewegungen auf das Auftreten einer Eigenschwingung der frei gleitenden Lagen schließen. Diese Schwingung lässt sich als Rotationsbewegung, gekoppelt mit einer transversalen Auslenkung in Vortexrichtung, beschreiben. Die Ergebnisse erlauben eine detaillierte Diskussion von verschiedenen Modellvorstellungen anderer Autoren.

The increasing precision of current and future experiments in high-energy physics requires a likewise increase in the accuracy of the calculation of theoretical predictions, in order to find evidence for possible deviations of the generally accepted Standard Model of elementary particles and interactions. Calculating the experimentally measurable cross sections of scattering and decay processes to a higher accuracy directly translates into including higher order radiative corrections in the calculation. The large number of particles and interactions in the full Standard Model results in an exponentially growing number of Feynman diagrams contributing to any given process in higher orders. Additionally, the appearance of multiple independent mass scales makes even the calculation of single diagrams non-trivial. For over two decades now, the only way to cope with these issues has been to rely on the assistance of computers. The aim of the xloops project is to provide the necessary tools to automate the calculation procedures as far as possible, including the generation of the contributing diagrams and the evaluation of the resulting Feynman integrals. The latter is based on the techniques developed in Mainz for solving one- and two-loop diagrams in a general and systematic way using parallel/orthogonal space methods. These techniques involve a considerable amount of symbolic computations. During the development of xloops it was found that conventional computer algebra systems were not a suitable implementation environment. For this reason, a new system called GiNaC has been created, which allows the development of large-scale symbolic applications in an object-oriented fashion within the C++ programming language. This system, which is now also in use for other projects besides xloops, is the main focus of this thesis. The implementation of GiNaC as a C++ library sets it apart from other algebraic systems. Our results prove that a highly efficient symbolic manipulator can be designed in an object-oriented way, and that having a very fine granularity of objects is also feasible. The xloops-related parts of this work consist of a new implementation, based on GiNaC, of functions for calculating one-loop Feynman integrals that already existed in the original xloops program, as well as the addition of supplementary modules belonging to the interface between the library of integral functions and the diagram generator.
