A secure communication system based on the error-feedback synchronization of the electronic model of the particle-in-a-box system is proposed. This circuit allows a robust and simple electronic emulation of the mechanical behavior of the collisions of a particle inside a box, exhibiting rich chaotic behavior. The required nonlinearity to emulate the box walls is implemented in a simple way when compared with other analog electronic chaotic circuits. A master/slave synchronization of two circuits exhibiting a rich chaotic behavior demonstrates the potentiality of this system to secure communication. In this system, binary data stream information modulates the bifurcation parameter of the particle-in-a-box electronic circuit in the transmitter. In the receiver circuit, this parameter is estimated using Pecora-Carroll synchronization and error-feedback synchronization. The performance of the demodulation process is verified through the eye pattern technique applied on the recovered bit stream. During the demodulation process, the error-feedback synchronization presented better performance compared with the Pecora-Carroll synchronization. The application of the particle-in-a-box electronic circuit in a secure communication system is demonstrated.

The measurement of the charge distribution in laboratory generated aerosols particles was carried out. Four cases of electrostatic charge acquisition by aerosol particles were evaluated. In two of these cases. the charges acquired by the particles were naturally derived from the aerosol generation procedure itself, without using any additional charging method. Ill the other two cases, a corona charger and an impact charger were utilized as Supplementary methods for charge generation. Two types of aerosol generators were used in the dispersion of particles in the gas Stream: the vibrating orifice generator TSI model 3450 and the rotating plate generator TSI model 3433. In the vibrating orifice generator. a Solution of methylene blue Was used and the generated particles were mono-dispersed. Different mono-aerosols were generated with particle diameters varying from 6.0 x 10(-6) m to 1.4 x 10(-5) m. In the rotating plate generator, a poly-dispersed phosphate rock concentrate with Stokes mean diameter of 1.30 x 10(-6) m and size range between 1.5 x 10(-7) m and 8.0 x 10(-6) m Was utilized as powder material in all tests. In the tests performed with the mono-dispersed particles. the median charges of the particles varied between -3.0 x 10-(16) C and -5.0 x 10(-18) degrees C and a weak dependence between particle size and charge was observed. The particles were predominantly negatively charged. In the tests with the poly-dispersed particles the median charges varied fairly linearly with the particle diameter and were negative. The order of magnitude of the results obtained is in accordance with data reported in the literature. The charge distribution, in this case, was wider, so that an appreciable amount of particles were positively charged. The relative spread of the distribution varied with the charging method. It was also noticed that the corona charger acted very effectively in charging the particles. (C) 2008 Elsevier BY. All rights reserved.

The 3D flow around a circular cylinder free to oscillate transversely to the free stream was simulated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Spalart-Allmaras Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) turbulence model for a Reynolds number Re = 10(4). Simulations were carried out for a small mass-damping parameter m*zeta = 0.00858, where m* = 3.3 and zeta = 0.0026. We found good agreement between the numerical results and experimental data. The simulations predicted the high observed amplitudes of the upper branch of vortex-induced vibrations for low mass-damping parameters.

This paper presents new experimental results of Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) on inclined cylinders. Models are mounted on a low damping air-bearing elastic base with one degree-of-freedom, constrained to oscillate only in the transverse direction to a free stream. The Reynolds number varied in the range 2000 less than or similar to Re less than or similar to 8000. New measurements on the dynamic response oscillations of inclined cylinders, due to VIV, are compared with previous experiments of a vertical cylinder. Models with circular and elliptical cross sections have been tested. The purpose of this work is to check the validity of the normal velocity correction of VIV studies of inclined structures. The results show that the reduced velocity range, in which the upper and lower branches of VIV occurs, is similar to the vertical cylinder case if the proper projected velocity is considered. Tests have been conducted to support this observation with inclinations up to 45 degrees. We have also observed that the amplitudes of oscillation of the inclined circular cylinder are comparable, but slightly lower than, to the amplitudes observed in the vertical cylinder experiments. Measured forces and added mass also show similar behaviour. However, for cases with an elliptical cylinder, the amplitudes of oscillation are considerably lower than those observed for a circular cylinder. This difference is explained by the higher added mass of the elliptical cylinder. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The objective of this paper is to develop a mathematical model for the synthesis of anaerobic digester networks based on the optimization of a superstructure that relies on a non-linear programming formulation. The proposed model contains the kinetic and hydraulic equations developed by Pontes and Pinto [Chemical Engineering journal 122 (2006) 65-80] for two types of digesters, namely UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) and EGSB (Expanded Granular Sludge Bed) reactors. The objective function minimizes the overall sum of the reactor volumes. The optimization results show that a recycle stream is only effective in case of a reactor with short-circuit, such as the UASB reactor. Sensitivity analysis was performed in the one and two-digester network superstructures, for the following parameters: UASB reactor short-circuit fraction and the EGSB reactor maximum organic load, and the corresponding results vary considerably in terms of digester volumes. Scenarios for three and four-digester network superstructures were optimized and compared with the results from fewer digesters. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We studied the structure of a population of Hydromedusa maximiliani associated with a stream in Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, Nucleo Itutinga-Piloes, southeastern Brazil, between October 2004 and October 2005. Twenty-five individuals were captured, and a population size of 43.72 +/- 23.7 individuals was estimated. This value is similar to that of the population of Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho, another Atlantic forest reserve of southeastern Brazil. Males were recaptured more frequently than females, suggesting higher activity and/or greater movement of males.

Riparian forests are protected by Brazilian law to preserve rivers and their margins. A sugar cane field adjacent to a strip of young riparian forest bordering an older riparian forest along a stream was used to study the riparian forest as a buffer zone to prevent pesticides pollution. Concentrations of the herbicides diuron, hexazinone and tebuthiuron were determined in different soil layers of a Red Yellow Oxisol during 2003 and 2004. The determination was done by High Performance Liquid Chromatography with reverse phase C-18 column, through two mobile phases. Diuron and hexazinone concentration diminished between the sugar cane and riparian forest as buffer strip demonstrating a protective effect. However, tebuthiuron had about four times higher concentrations in the old riparian forest compared to the other areas. Concentrations were higher in the surface and decreased in deeper soil layers in the old riparian forest suggesting that this herbicide probably was introduced by air pollution. This pesticide concentrated in the canopy could be washed by rain to the soil adjacent to the stream. Our data suggest that climate conditions were responsible for enhanced volatilization exposing the old riparian forest to more air pollution that was captured by the higher canopy. Riparian forests are important for the structure and functioning of stream ecosystems, providing structural components such as large woody debris (LWD). Changes in these forests will cause modifications in the LWD input to streams, affecting their structure. In order to assess the influence of riparian forests changes in LWD supply, 15 catchments (third and fourth order) with riparian forests at different conservation levels were selected for sampling. In each catchment we quantified the abundance, volume and diameter of LWD in stream channels; the number, area and volume of pools formed by LWD and basal area and tree diameter of riparian forest. We found that riparian forests were at a secondary successional stage with predominantly young trees (diameter at breast height < 10 cm) in all studied streams. Results showed that basal area and diameter of riparian forest differed between the stream groups (forested and non-forested), but tree density did not differ between groups. Differences were also observed in LWD abundance, volume, frequency of LWD pools with subunits and area and volume of LWD pools. LWD diameter, LWD that form pools diameter and frequency of LWD pools without subunits did not differ between stream groups. Regression analyses showed that LWD abundance and volume, and frequency of LWD pools (with and without subunits) were positively related with the proportion of riparian forest. LWD diameter was not correlated to riparian tree diameter. The frequency of LWD pools was correlated to the abundance and volume of LWD, but characteristics of these pools (area and volume) were not correlated to the diameter of LWD that formed the pools. These results show that alterations in riparian forest cause modifications in the LWD abundance and volume in the stream channel, affecting mainly the structural complexity of these ecosystems (reduction in the number and structural characteristics of LWD pools). Our results also demonstrate that riparian forest conservation actions must consider not only its extension, but also successional stage to guarantee the quantity and quality of LWD necessary to enable the structuring of stream channels.

A cholesterol-rich nanoemulsion (LDE) that resembles LDL binds to the LDL receptors and after injection into the blood stream may concentrate in cells with LDL receptor overexpression, as occurs in neoplasias and other proliferative processes. Thus, LDE can be used as vehicle to target drugs against those cells. The current study was designed to verify in rabbits whether LDE concentrates in the lesioned rabbit artery and whether a paclitaxel derivative, paclitaxel oleate, associated to LDE could reduce the atherosclerotic lesions. Sixteen male New Zealand rabbits were fed a 1% cholesterol diet for 60 days. Starting from day 30 under cholesterol feeding, eight animals were treated with four weekly intravenous injections of LDE-paclitaxel (4 mg/kg) and eight with four weekly intravenous saline solution injections for additional 30 days. On day 60, the animals were sacrificed for analysis. The uptake of LDE labeled with [C-14]-cholesteryl oleate by the aortic arch of cholesterol-fed rabbits was twice as much that observed in animals fed only regular chow. LDE-paclitaxel reduced the lesion areas of cholesterol-fed animals by 60% and intima-media ratio fourfold and inhibited the macrophage migration and the smooth muscle cell proliferation and invasion of the intima. LDE-paclitaxel treatment had no toxicity. In conclusion, LDE-paclitaxel produced pronounced atherosclerosis regression without toxicity and has shown remarkable potential in cardiovascular therapeutics. RECK is an anti-tumoral gene whose activity has been associated with its inhibitory effects regulating MMP-2, MMP-9, and MT1-MMP. RECK level decreases as gliobastoma progresses, varying from less invasive grade II gliomas to very invasive human glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Since RECK expression and glioma invasiveness show an inverse correlation, the aim of the present study is to investigate whether RECK expression would inhibit glioma invasive behavior. We conducted this study to explore forced RECK expression in the highly invasive T98G human GBM cell line. Expression levels as well as protein levels of RECK, MMP-2, MMP-9, and MT1-MMP were assessed by qPCR and immunoblotting in T98G/RECK+ cells. The invasion and migration capacity of RECK+ cells was inhibited in transwell and wound assays. Dramatic cytoskeleton modifications were observed in the T98G/RECK+ cells, when compared to control cells, such as the abundance of stress fibers (contractile actin-myosin II bundles) and alteration of lamellipodia. T98G/RECK+ cells also displayed phosphorylatecl focal adhesion kinase (P-FAK) in mature focal adhesions associated with stress fibers; whereas P-FAK in control cells was mostly associated with immature focal complexes. Interestingly, the RECK protein was predominantly localized at the leading edge of migrating cells, associated with membrane ruffles. Unexpectedly, introduced expression of RECK effectively inhibited the invasive process through rearrangement of actin filaments, promoting a decrease in migratory ability. This work has associated RECK tumor-suppressing activity with the inhibition of motility and invasion in this GBM model, which are two glioma characteristics responsible for the inefficiency of current available treatments. Nitric oxide (NO) in NTS plays an important role in regulating autonomic function to the cardiovascular system. Using the fluorescent dye DAF-2 DA, we evaluated the NO concentration in NTS. Brainstem slices of rats were loaded with DAF-2 DA, washed, fixed in paraformaldehyde and examined under fluorescent light. In different experimental groups, NTS slices were pre-incubated with 1 mM L-NAME (a non-selective NOS inhibitor), 1 MM D-NAME (an inactive enantiomere of L-NAME), 1 mM kynurenic acid (a nonselective ionotropic receptors antagonist) or 20 mu M bicuculline (a selective GABA(A) receptors antagonist) before and during DAF-2 DA loading. Images were acquired using a confocal microscope and the intensity of fluorescence was quantified in three antero-posterior NTS regions. In addition, slices previously loaded with DAF-2 DA were incubated with NeuN or GFAP antibody. A semi-quantitative analysis of the fluorescence intensity showed that the basal NO concentration was similar in all antero-posterior aspects of the NTS (rostral intermediate, 15.5 +/- 0.8 AU: caudal intermediate, 13.2 +/- 1.4 AU; caudal commissural, 13.8 +/- 1.4 AU, n = 10). In addition, the inhibition of NOS and the antagonism of glutamatergic receptors decreased the NO fluorescence in the NTS. On the other hand, D-NAME did not affect the NO fluorescence and the antagonism of GABAA receptors increased the NO fluorescence in the NTS. It is important to note that the fluorescence for NO was detected mainly in neurons. These data show that the fluorescence observed after NTS loading with DAF-2 DA is a result of NO present in the NTS and support the concept that NTS neurons have basal NO production which is modulated by L-glutamate and GABA. Hydrogen is being seen as an alternative energy carrier to conventional hydrocarbons to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. High efficiency separation technologies to remove hydrogen from the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, are therefore in growing demand. Traditional thermodynamic separation systems utilise distillation, absorption and adsorption, but are limited in efficiency at compact scales. Molecular sieve silica (MSS) membranes can perform this separation as they have high permselectivity of hydrogen to carbon dioxide, but their stability under thermal cycling is not well reported. In this work we exposed a standard MSS membrane and a carbonised template MSS (CTMSS) membrane to thermal cycling from 100 to 450°C. The standard MSS and carbonised template CTMSS membranes both showed permselectivity of helium to nitrogen dropping from around 10 to 6 in the first set of cycles, remaining stable until the last test. The permselectivity drop was due to small micropore collapse, which occurred via structure movement during cycling. Simulating single stage membrane separation with a 50:50 molar feed of H2:CO2, H2 exiting the permeate stream would start at 79% and stabilise at 67%. Higher selectivity membranes showed less of a purity drop, indicating the margin at which to design a stable membrane separation unit for CO2 capture.

Lactic acid (LA) has significant market potential for many industries including food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, medical and biodegradable materials. Production of LA usually begins with the fermentation of glucose but subsequent stages for the enrichment of lactic acid are complex and energy intensive and could be minimised using water selective membrane technology. In this work, we trialled a highly selective hydrostable carbonised template molecular sieve silica (CTMSS) membrane for the dehydration of a 15 vol% aqueous lactic acid solution with 0.1 vol% glucose. CTMSS membrane films were developed by dip-coating ceramic substrates with silica sols made using the acid catalysed sol-gel process. Permeation was performed by feeding LA/glucose solution to the membrane cell at 18°C in a standard pervaporation setup. The membrane showed selective transport of water from the aqueous feed to the permeate while glucose was not detected. CTMSS membrane permeate flux stabilised at 0.2 kg.m-2.hr-1 in 3.9 hours, and reduced LA to lower than 0.2 vol%. Flux through the CTMSS micropores was activated, displaying increased initial flux to 1.58 kg.m-2.hr-1 at 60°C. To enrich a 1 l.min-1 stream to 85% LA in a single stage, a minimum membrane area of 324 m2 would be required at 18°C. Increased operating temperature to 80°C significantly reduced this area to 24 m2 but LA levels in the permeate stream increased to 0.5 vol%. The highly selective CTMSS membrane technology is an ideal candidate for LA purification. CTMSS membrane systems operate stably in aqueous systems leading to potential cost reductions in LA processing for future markets.

This article describes a method to turn astronomical imaging into a random number generator by using the positions of incident cosmic rays and hot pixels to generate bit streams. We subject the resultant bit streams to a battery of standard benchmark statistical tests for randomness and show that these bit streams are statistically the same as a perfect random bit stream. Strategies for improving and building upon this method are outlined.

The subject of management is renowned for its addiction to fads and fashions. Project Management is no exception. The issue of interest for this paper is the establishment of the 'College of Complex Project Managers' and their 'competency standard for complex project managers.' Both have generated significant interest in the Project Management community, and like any other human endeavour they should be subject to critical evaluation. The results of this evaluation show significant flaws in the definition of complex in this case, the process by which the College and its standard have emerged, and the content of the standard. However, there is a significant case for a portfolio of research that extends the existing bodies of knowledge into large-scale complicated (or major) projects that would be owned by the relevant practitioner communities, rather than focused on one organization. Research questions are proposed that would commence this stream of activity towards an intelligent synthesis of what is required to manage in both complicated and truly complex environments.
