OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the structure, process and results of the Capillary Blood Glucose Self-monitoring Program in a Brazilian city. METHOD: epidemiological, cross-sectional study. The methodological framework of Donabedian was used to construct indicators of structure, process and outcome. A random sample (n = 288) of users enrolled and 96 health professionals who worked in the program was studied. Two questionnaires were used that were constructed for this study, one for professionals and one for users, both containing data for the evaluation of structure, process and outcome. Anthropometric measures and laboratory results were collected by consulting the patients' health records. The analysis involved descriptive statistics. RESULTS: most of the professionals were not qualified to work in the program and were not knowledgeable about the set of criteria for patient registration. None of the patients received complete and correct orientations about the program and the percentage with skills to perform conducts autonomously was 10%. As regards the result indicators, 86.4% of the patients and 81.3% of the professionals evaluated the program positively. CONCLUSION: the evaluation indicators designed revealed that one of the main objectives of the program, self-care skills, has not been achieved.

The present study sought to identify which are the facilitators and restrictive in the creation and management of franchises from the point of view of process factors franchisees. For this, we first proposed to critically analyze its creation and management. The specific objectives of this work are: a) to understand in the light of the theory , the basic requirements for creating franchises b ) identify, from the literature review , facilitators and restrictive factors in the process of franchise management , c) develop a survey tool to critically analyze the processes of creating and managing a franchise from the point of view of the franchisee , and d ) to review the process of creating and managing franchises , from the perspective of four franchised food services in the municipalities of Ribeirão Preto and Sao Jose do Rio Preto - SP . A descriptive qualitative work, which found the most important features about the franchises, through a study of 4 franchises in the food industry of São Paulo was performed. To complete the survey was conducted a semi-structured interview, containing questions regarding the main elements of a business: creating, planning, organization, direction and control. It was found that franchising is a business model with controversies. There are people who deal well with the system and that through him realize dreams such as owning their own business. Others need to think many times before embarking in business since the entrepreneurship factor can be so intense that it hinders the acceptance of norms and duties to the system. This causes some factors such as communication, measurement of outcomes, implementation plan and among others are considered restrictive or facilitators in the process of strategy management of franchises

This study assessed the surface microhardness of compound resins cured by different light sources. Methods Three micro hybrid (Vit-l-escence, Amelogen Plus, Opallis) and one nanoparticle (Filtek Z350, 3M ESPETM Dental Products, St. Paul, USA) compound resins were selected. The resins were polymerized by a halogen light unit (Ultralux, Dabi Atlante, Ribeirão Preto, Brasil) with two tips, one semi-guided made of glass and another of painted acrylic and a LED-based source (UltraLume 2, Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA). Specimens constructed from a circular aluminum matrix were photopolymerized for 40 second after they received the compound resin and stored dry for 24 hours. After this period, a Vickers surface microhardness assay was performed, measuring the top (hardness 1) and base (hardness 2) surfaces four times each. Variance analyses were complemented by Newman-Keuls method, with significance set at 5%. Results The Opallis (FGM, Santa Catarina, Brasil) resin subjected to UltraLume 2 (Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA) obtained the lowest mean hardness values for the top surface. The Vit-l-escence (Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA) compound cured by Led UltraLume 2 (Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA) and by Ultralux PCP (Dabi Atlante, Ribeirão Preto, Brasil) halogen light obtained the highest mean hardness, followed by the Filtek Z350 (3M ESPETM Dental Products, St. Paul, USA) resin subjected to UltraLume 2 (Ultradent® South Jordan, USA). The Opallis (FGM, Santa Catarina, Brasil) resin cured by LED UltraLume 2 (Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA) also obtained the lowest mean hardness for the base surface and the Vit-L-Escence (Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA) resin obtained the highest value, followed by Amelogen Plus, when cured by Ultralux (Dabi Atlante, Ribeirão Preto, Brasil) using the semi-guided tip. Conclusion The polymerization and, consequently, the microhardness achieved by the LED unit was equivalent to those achieved by conventional halogen units for three of the four composites tested.

To determine the prevalence and intensity of orofacial pain in adults that participated in a health program at Ribeirão Preto. Methodology: The study was conducted by a self-administered questionnaire, with 19 questions in 99 people aged 18 to 66 years. The method used for data collection was the index Oral Impacton Daily Performances (OIDP), which evaluated the six months preceding the survey, pain experiences in the mouth, teeth or dentures and how these factors interfere with daily activities. Statistical analysis was performed using Epi Info version 3.4. Results: The majority of the adults who participated in this survey (52.5%) reported having an excellent or good oral health, reported having problems with their teeth (60.6%), no problems with the gums (77.8%), no bad taste in mouth (77.8%) or bad breath (77.8%). Among the participants of the study, 56.6% felt orofacial pain in the last six months and the pain were more frequently caused by cold or hot liquids (30.3%), spontaneous pain (17.2%), during the mouth opening (17.2%), pain in the face (13.1%) and ATM (13.1%). Regarding the severity rate, the highest proportion varied from mild to moderate. Conclusions: Even observing a low severity of orofacial pain, its prevalence was high, which probably has a negative effect on life quality of these people.

Temporomandibular disorder describes a variety of conditions including joint and muscle in the stomatognathic system, characterized by pain, TMJ sounds, functions irregular jaw and represent the leading cause of nondental pain in the orofacial region. The objective of this research was to evaluate the prevalence of ophthalmological, otological and cognitive-behavioral changes, parafunctional habits in individuals with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). A total of 117 medical records of female and male individuals, aged 18 to 60 years, from the Occlusion, Temporomandibular Dysfunction and Orofacial Pain of the Ribeirão Preto School of Dentistry – USP, between 2010 and 2011. The anamnesis index proposed by Helkimo was used to classify the individuals according to TMD severity degree and to divide them into two groups: AiI (mild to moderate) with 69 individuals and AiII (severe) with 48 individuals. The groups were then subdivided with respect to gender (72.64% female and 27.36% male) and age. There was predominance in the 18-40 year age group (60.68%) when compared to the 41-60 year age group (39.32%). Data were collected through an interview with questions about the presence of parafunctional habits, otological, ophthalmological and behavioral changes. Data were subjected to the statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The prevalence of each change was also evaluated. The results showed statistically significant for all groups according to gender, age and degree of severity. Individuals with temporomandibular disorders exhibited high prevalence of systemic and local dysfunctions.
