As a variation of the thermally actuated flux pump and the linear type magnetic flux pump (LTMFP), the circular type magnetic flux pump (CTMFP) device is proposed to magnetize a circular shape type-II superconducting thin film and bulk. The basic concept is the same as the thermally actuated flux pump: a circularly symmetric traveling magnetic field is generated below a circular shape superconductor to increase its trapping field. However, this traveling field is created by the three phase windings instead of heating gadolinium block. Apart from the LTMFP, the three phase windings are wound concentrically instead of linearly. The speed of the traveling field is controlled by the AC frequency and the magnitude of the field is controlled by the magnitudes of AC currents. In addition, a coil with DC current is wound around the three phase windings to provide a background field. The concept design is presented in this paper. The magnetic waveforms are analysed numerically by the COMSOL 3.5a software. The impedances of the three phase windings are calculated and a corresponding circuit design is presented. This rig can be used as an advanced tool to study the flux pump behavior of a circular shape superconductor. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

This paper presents the design of an AC loss experiment using nitrogen boil-off method. This experiment is aimed at exploring the AC loss of HTS double race-track coils which will be installed on the rotor of a wind turbine generator. The operating environment is simulated by designing a cryostat with rotating magnetic field windings. Apart from the fact that the alternating magnetic field causes most of AC loss on the HTS coils, we also believe that the DC background field would be another important factor causing AC loss if the HTS coil is experiencing by both alternating magnetic field in the perpendicular direction and DC background field in the parallel direction. In order to perform the boil-off measurement, we present the method to estimate the heat leakage in the cryostat which might cause errors to the measurement. © 2011 IEEE.

Application of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) has been increasingly popular since the new superconducting materials were discovered. This paper presents a new high-precision digital lock-in measurement technique which is used for measuring critical current and AC loss of the 2nd Generation HTS tape. Using a lock-in amplifier and nano-voltage meter, we can resolve signals at nano-volt level, while using a specially designed compensation coil we can cancel out inductive by adjusting the coil inductance. Furthermore, a finer correction for the inductive component can be achieved by adjusting the reference phase of the lock-in amplifier. The critical current and AC loss measurement algorithms and hardware layout are described and analyzed, and results for both numerical and experimental data under varieties of frequencies are presented. © 2008 SICE.

a-C:H films deposited from methane and helium mixture in a capacitively coupled rf plasma were found to show photoluminescence (PL) with peak intensities at energies far above the Taue gap of these films. Apart from the PL the films were investigated with respect to their IR and UV/VIS absorption properties as well as their Raman spectra were examined. The ultraviolet (UV) and blue luminescence from hard a-C:H thin films are explained by incorporation of polycyclic hydrocarbons from gas-phase reactions in the methane helium plasma into the film.

A circular-type magnetic flux pump (CTMFP) device was built to study the flux dynamics on a 2-inch-diameter YBCO thin film. This CTMFP is composed of two CTMFP coils, with each CTMFP coil containing concentric three-phase windings and a dc winding. We connected the three-phase windings to the output of a commercial inverter. By changing the output frequency of the inverter, the sweeping speed of the circular-shaped travelling magnetic wave can be changed. The connection of the phase coils follows the forward consequence, so that the circular-shaped travelling magnetic wave travels inward to the center. The output frequency f was changed from f = 0.01 to 1000.0 Hz. The YBCO sample was sandwiched between the two CTMFP coils to experience the circular-shaped travelling magnetic wave. It was found that the increase of the flux density in the center of the film is independent of the sweeping frequency. In high frequency f = 1000.0Hz, even if the waveform had changed a lot, the increment is still the same as in low frequencies. © 2012 IEEE.

We have studied the structure and the room temperature luminescence of erbium silicate thin films deposited by rf magnetron sputtering. Films deposited on silicon oxide layers are characterized by good structural properties and excellent stability. The optical properties of these films are strongly improved by rapid thermal annealing processes performed in the range of temperature 800-1250 °C. In fact through the reduction of the defect density of the material, a very efficient room temperature photoluminescence at 1535 nm is obtained. We have also investigated the influence of the annealing ambient, by finding that treatments in O2 atmosphere are significantly more efficient in improving the optical properties of the material with respect to processes in N2. Upconversion effects become effective only when erbium silicate is excited with high pump powers. The evidence that all Er atoms (about 1022 cm-3) in erbium silicate films are optically active suggests interesting perspectives for optoelectronic applications of this material. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. The structural properties and the room temperature luminescence of Er2O3 thin films deposited by RF magnetron sputtering have been studied. Films characterized by good morphological properties have been obtained by using a SiO2 interlayer between the film and the Si substrate. The evolution of the properties of the Er2O3 films due to rapid thermal annealing processes in O2 ambient performed at temperatures in the range 800-1200 °C has been investigated in details. The existence of well-defined annealing conditions (temperature of 1100 °C or higher) allowing to avoid the occurrence of extensive chemical reactions with the oxidized substrate has been demonstrated and an increase of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity by about a factor of 40 with respect to the as deposited material has been observed. The enhanced efficiency of the photon emission process has been correlated with the longer lifetime of the PL signal. The same annealing processes are less effective when Er2O3 is deposited on Si. In this latter case interfacial reactions and pit formation occur, leading to a material characterized by stronger non-radiative phenomena that limit the PL efficiency. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents a comparative study of ac magnetization losses in two types of 2 G HTS racetrack coils. The magnetic substrate made by RABiTS is the main difference between the two types, because ferromagnetic loss caused by magnetic substrate is accounted into the total ac losses. IBAD and RABiTS tapes were successfully wound into racetrack shape with identical geometry. The measurements were carried out by using electromagnetic method with pick-up coils under a sinusoidally varying external magnetic field, with amplitudes up to 27 mT, ranging from 10 Hz to 100 Hz at a temperature of 77 K. The field was oriented perpendicularly to the surface of the tapes. Experimental measurements were validated by applying theoretical models and the results showed that the magnetization loss in the MAG RABiTS coil is always higher than that in the NON MAG coil due to the presence of the magnetic substrate, which increases the magnetic field penetration into the coil and causes higher magnetic flux density within the penetrated region. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

HTS racetrack coils are becoming important elements of an emerging number of superconducting devices such as generators or motors. In these devices the issue of AC loss is crucial, as performance and cooling power are derived from this quantity. This paper presents a comparative study of transport AC loss in two different types of 2G HTS racetrack coils. In this study, both experimental measurements and computer simulation approaches were employed. All the experiments were performed using classical AC electrical method. The finite-element computer model was used to estimate electromagnetic properties and calculate transport AC loss. The main difference between the characterized coils is covered inside tape architectures. While one coil uses tape based on RABITS magnetic substrate, the second coil uses a non-magnetic tape. Ferromagnetic loss caused by a magnetic substrate is an important issue involved in the total AC loss. As a result, the coil with the magnetic substrate surprised with high AC loss and rather low performance. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper studies 2G high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils for electric machine armature windings, using finite element method (FEM) and H formulation. A FEM model for 2G HTS racetrack coil is built in COMSOL, and is well validated by comparing calculated ac loss with experimental measurements. The FEM model is used to calculate transport loss in HTS armature windings, using air-cored design. We find that distributed winding used in conventional machine design is an effective way to reduce transport loss of HTS armature winding, in terms of air-cored design. Based on our study, we give suggestions on the design of low loss HTS armature winding. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

We have studied numerically and experimentally the magnetic flux penetration in high-Tc superconducting tube subjected to a uniform magnetic field parallel to its long axis. This study is carried in view of designing low-frequency magnetic shields by exploiting the diamagnetic properties of high-Tc superconducting ceramics. We have measured the field attenuation for applied magnetic fields in the frequency range 5 mHz-0.1 Hz by Hall probe measurements and at audio frequencies using a sensing coil. A simple 1D analysis using the Kim critical state model was found to be able to reproduce the experimental data satisfactorily. We have also determined the phase shift between the internal and the applied field both experimentally and numerically. Finally, we have studied the sweep rate dependence of the magnetic shielding properties, using data recorded either at several constant sweep rates dB /dt or at several AC fields of various amplitudes and frequencies. Both methods agree with each other and lead to a n-value of the E ∼ Jn law equal to ∼40 at 77 K. © 2009 IEEE.

Hafnium oxide (HfOx) is a high dielectric constant (k) oxide which has been identified as being suitable for use as the gate dielectric in thin film transistors (TFTs). Amorphous materials are preferred for a gate dielectric, but it has been an ongoing challenge to produce amorphous HfOx while maintaining a high dielectric constant. A technique called high target utilization sputtering (HiTUS) is demonstrated to be capable of depositing high-k amorphous HfOx thin films at room temperature. The plasma is generated in a remote chamber, allowing higher rate deposition of films with minimal ion damage. Compared to a conventional sputtering system, the HiTUS technique allows finer control of the thin film microstructure. Using a conventional reactive rf magnetron sputtering technique, monoclinic nanocrystalline HfOx thin films have been deposited at a rate of ∼1.6nmmin-1 at room temperature, with a resistivity of 1013Ωcm, a breakdown strength of 3.5MVcm-1 and a dielectric constant of ∼18.2. By comparison, using the HiTUS process, amorphous HfOx (x=2.1) thin films which appear to have a cubic-like short-range order have been deposited at a high deposition rate of ∼25nmmin-1 with a high resistivity of 1014Ωcm, a breakdown strength of 3MVcm-1 and a high dielectric constant of ∼30. Two key conditions must be satisfied in the HiTUS system for high-k HfOx to be produced. Firstly, the correct oxygen flow rate is required for a given sputtering rate from the metallic target. Secondly, there must be an absence of energetic oxygen ion bombardment to maintain an amorphous microstructure and a high flux of medium energy species emitted from the metallic sputtering target to induce a cubic-like short range order. This HfOx is very attractive as a dielectric material for large-area electronic applications on flexible substrates. A remote plasma sputtering process (high target utilization sputtering, HiTUS) has been used to deposit amorphous hafnium oxide with a very high dielectric constant (∼30). X-ray diffraction shows that this material has a microstructure in which the atoms have a cubic-like short-range order, whereas radio frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering produced a monoclinic polycrystalline microstructure. This is correlated to the difference in the energetics of remote plasma and rf magnetron sputtering processes. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

Aircraft black carbon (BC) emissions contribute to climate forcing, but few estimates of BC emitted by aircraft at cruise exist. For the majority of aircraft engines the only BC-related measurement available is smoke number (SN)-a filter based optical method designed to measure near-ground plume visibility, not mass. While the first order approximation (FOA3) technique has been developed to estimate BC mass emissions normalized by fuel burn [EI(BC)] from SN, it is shown that it underestimates EI(BC) by >90% in 35% of directly measured cases (R(2) = -0.10). As there are no plans to measure BC emissions from all existing certified engines-which will be in service for several decades-it is necessary to estimate EI(BC) for existing aircraft on the ground and at cruise. An alternative method, called FOX, that is independent of the SN is developed to estimate BC emissions. Estimates of EI(BC) at ground level are significantly improved (R(2) = 0.68), whereas estimates at cruise are within 30% of measurements. Implementing this approach for global civil aviation estimated aircraft BC emissions are revised upward by a factor of ~3. Direct radiative forcing (RF) due to aviation BC emissions is estimated to be ~9.5 mW/m(2), equivalent to ~1/3 of the current RF due to aviation CO2 emissions.
