A PPV derivative containing bulky tetraphenylmethane side chains was synthesised. Its optical properties were examined. Compared to its parent PPV polymer, its UV-Vis absorption and PL showed less red-shift from solution to film, its PL showed much less concentration quenching effect and higher efficiency, its EL device showed 9-fold enhanced efficiency. These improvements were attributed to weakened inter-chain interaction caused by the tetraphenylmethane group.

Electrical and optical properties of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with a stepwise graded bipolar transport emissive layer for a better control of charge transport and recombination are presented. The graded bipolar transport layer was formed by co-evaporating a hole-transporting material N,N-'-diphenyl-N,N-'-bis(1,1(')-biphenyl)-4,4(')-diamine (NPB) and an electron-transporting/emissive material tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq(3)) in steps, where each step has a different concentration ratio of NPB to Alq(3). Compared to a conventional heterojunction OLED, electroluminescence efficiency was enhanced by a factor of more than 1.5, whereas the turn-on voltage remained unchanged in the graded structure.

In this paper, we study the effects of electrical annealing at different voltages on the performance of organic light-emitting diodes. The light-emitting diodes studied here are single-layer devices based on a conjugated dendrimer doped with 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole as the emissive layer. We find that these devices can be annealed electrically by applying a voltage. This process reduces the turn-on voltage and enhances the brightness and efficiency. We obtained an external electroluminescence quantum efficiency of 0.07% photon/electron and a brightness of 2900 cd m(-2) after 12.4 V electrical annealing, which are about 6 times and 9 times higher than un-annealing devices, respectively. The improved luminance and efficiency are attributed to the presence of a space charge field near the electrodes caused by charging of traps.

Photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiency is a key issue in designing successful light-emitting polymer systems. Exciton relaxation is strongly affected by exciton quenching at nonradiative trapping centers and the formation of excimers. These factors reduce the PL quantum yield of light-emitting polymers. In this work, we have systematically investigated the effects of exciton confinement on the PL quantum yield of an oligomer, polymer, and alternating block copolymer (ABC) PPV system. Time-resolved and temperature-dependent luminescence studies have been performed. The ABC design effectively confine photoexcitations within the chromophores, preventing exciton migration and excimer formation. An unusually high (PL) quantum yield (above 90%) in the solid state is reported for the alternating block copolymer PPV, as compared to that of similar to 30% of the polymer and oligomer model compounds. A series of novel PPV derivative copolymers with good solubility in common organic solvents were synthesized. The emitting color of these copolymers could range from red to blue by adjusting the structures and the compositions of monomers. Investigation on their optical properties showed that the PL quantum efficiency could be increased by energy transfer and conjugation reduction. The PL quantum efficiency of most green/blue copolymer films on slide glass was higher than 80%.

To obtain high efficiency luminescent materials, the system Al2O3-B2O3 containing Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions with variation of B2O3-content, has been prepared by Al2O3, H3BO3, CeO2 and Tb4O7 under reducing atmosphere at 1250(j)ae. It is notable that the brightness of the sample with appropriate composition is similar to that of commercial phosphorous containing Ce3+ and Tb3+, indicating that a new high efficency green luminescent material was obtained with appropriate B2O3-content.

Three kinds of PPV-based copolymers were synthesized and characterized. Their luminescent properties were investigated and discussed by PL spectrum, and time-dependence luminescent spectrum in film and solution stare. The results show that in the range of our study, the PL intensity and lifetime of luminescent decay increase with the increasing length of flexible segments and the solution diluting, indicating the tendency of the increase of luminescent efficiency.

A soluble polymer emitting green color with high efficiency was synthesized. Bright green electroluminescence devices, both single layer and multilayer, were fabricated. The luminous efficiency was improved dramatically. Carrier injection from the electrodes to the emissive layer and concomitant green electroluminescence from the emissive layer were observed. A luminance of 920 cd/m(2) and luminous efficiency of 5.35 1m/W were achieved at a drive voltage of 15 V for the multilayer device. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

With the purpose of finding an ideal cryoprotectant or combination of cryoprotectants in a suitable concentration for flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) embryo cryopreservation, we tested the toxicities, at culture temperature (16 degrees C), of five most commonly used cryoprotectants-dimethyl sulfoxide (Me2SO), glycerol, methanol (MeOH), 1,2-propylene glycol (PG) and ethylene glycol (EG). In addition, cryoprotective efficiency to flounder embryos of individual and combined cryoprotectants were tested at -15 degrees C for 60 min. Five different concentrations of each of the five cryoprotectants and 20 different combinations of these cryoprotectants were tested for their protective efficiency. The results showed that the toxicity to flounder embryos of the five cryoprotectants are in the following sequence: PG < MeOH < Me2SO < glycerol < EG (P < 0.05); whereas the protective efficiency of each cryoprotectant, at -15 degrees C for a period of 60 min, are in the following sequence: PG > Me2SO approximate to MeOH approximate to glycerol > EG (greater symbols mean P < 0.05, and approximate symbols mean P > 0.05). Methanol combined with any one of the other cryoprotectants gave the best protection, while ethylene glycol combined with any one of the other cryoprotectants gave the poorest protection at -15 degrees C. Toxicity effect was concentration dependent with the lowest concentration being the least toxic for all five cryoprotectants at 16 degrees C. For PG, MeOH and glycerol, 20% solutions gave the best protection at -15 degrees C; whereas a 15% solution of Me2SO, and a 10% solution of EG, gave the best protection at -15 degrees C. The C-phycocyanin and the R-phycoerythrin were purified from the blue-green alga Spirulina platensis and red alga Polysiphonia urceolata respectively. Both sodium periodate and glutaraldehyde are effective coupling agents being capable of constructing the R-phycoerythrin-C-phycocyanin conjugate, which was also called phycobiliproteins energy transfer model. The two artificial conjugates constructed with different methods were purified by Sephadex G-200 chromatography respectively. Spectra analysis indicated that energy transfer occurred in the two conjugates. The conjugate with sodium periodate had the higher efficiency of energy transfer than that with glutaraldehyde conjugate.

In the invading course of Undaria pinnatifida, zoospore attachment in a dynamically changed subtidal water environment is crucial for the establishment of a potential population in alien waters. Among many abiotic factors that may interfere with the attachment process, water velocity is the most important one. In this investigation, the effect of water velocity on zoospore attachment of U. pinnatifida was investigated in an artificially designed system. It was found that freshly released zoospores that were transported by water flowing at 0 similar to 16 cm/s showed no difficulty in attaching the smooth surface. Zoospore attachment decreased at elevated water flowing rates. At 70 cm/s no spore attachment occurred. Spores that have settled on glass slide for up to I h could not be stripped away by flowing water at a rate of 129 cm/s, the same was true of the 20 d old filamentous gametophytes. It was found that more than 70% of free-swimming zoospores tended to settle down adjacent to the settled spores and formed conjugated clusters from two up to a few hundred cells in still culture.

The extracts obtained from 28 species of marine algae were evaluated for their antioxidant activity (AA) versus the positive controls butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), gallic acid (GA), and ascorbic acid (AscA). Most of the tested samples displayed antioxidant activity to various degrees. Among them, the extract of Symphyocladia latiuscula exhibited the strongest AA, which was comparable to BHT, GA, and AscA in radical scavenging activity, as shown in the DPPH (alpha,alpha-diphenyl-beta-picrylhydrazyl) assay, and higher than those of the positive controls in beta-carotene-linoleate assay system. In addition, the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction isolated from the crude extract of S. latiuscula exhibited the highest antioxidant activity in both assay systems. This fraction was further fractionated into seven subfractions (F1-F7) by vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC). F1 and F4 were found to be the most effective subfractions in scavenging DPPH radical assay and in the beta-carotene-linoleate assay, respectively. The total phenolic content (TPC) and reducing power (RP) for all of the extracts, fractions, and subfractions (F1-F7) were also determined. The TPC of the 28 extracts ranged from 0.10 to 8.00 gallic acid equivalents (mg/g seaweed dry weight) while the RP ranged from 0.07 to 11.60 ascorbic acid equivalents (mg center dot g(-1) seaweed dry weight). Highly positive relationships between AA and TPC as well as between AA and RP were found for the extracts and fractions, while for the subfractions F1-F7 only weak or no such relations were found. The results obtained from this study indicate that further analysis is needed of those marine algal species that contain the most antioxidant activity in order to identify the active principles.

Myf-5, a member of the myogenic regulatory factors (MRF), has been shown to be expressed in muscle precursors in early stage zebrafish embryos. The MRFs, including MyoD, Myf-5, Myogenin and MR-F4, belong to the basic Helix-Loop-Helix transcription factors that contain a conserved basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) domain. To better understand the role of Myf-5 in the development of fish muscles, we have isolated the Myf-5 genomic sequence and cDNA from Flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), and analyzed its structures and patterns of expression. Promoter analysis identified several putative transcription factor binding sites such as an E-box, NF-Y sites that might confer muscle-specific expression. Myf-5 transcripts were first detected in the paraxial mesoderm that gives rise to slow muscles. During somitogenesis, Myf-5 expression was found in developing somites. Myf-5 expression decreased gradually in somites in the anterior region, but remained strong in the newly formed somites. In the hatching stage, the expression was also detected in other muscle cells such as head muscle and fin muscle. In the growing fish, RT-PCR results showed that Myf-5 was expressed in the skeletal muscle and intestine. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Specification and differentiation of skeletal muscle cells are driven by the activity of genes encoding members of the myogenic regulatory factors (MRFs). In vertebrates, the MRF family includes MyoD, Myf5, myogenin, and MRF4. The MRFs are capable of converting a variety of nonmuscle cells into myoblasts and myotubes. To better understand their roles in fish muscle development, we isolated the MyoD gene from flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) and analyzed its structure and patterns of expression. Sequence analysis showed that flounder MyoD shared a structure similar to that of vertebrate MRFs with three exons and two introns, and its protein contained a highly conserved basic helix-loop-helix domain (bHLH). Comparison of sequences revealed that flounder MyoD was highly conserved with other fish MyoD genes. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis indicated that flounder MyoD, seabream (Sparus aurata) MyoD1, takifugu (Takifugu rubripes) MyoD, and tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) MyoD were more likely to be homologous genes. Flounder MyoD expression was first detected as two rows of presomitic cells in the segmental plate. From somitogenesis, MyoD transcripts were present in the adaxial cells that give rise to slow muscles and the lateral somitic cells that give rise to fast muscles. After 30 somites formed, MyoD expression decreased in the somites except the caudal somites, coincident with somite maturation. In the hatching stage, MyoD was expressed in other muscle cells and caudal somites. It was detected only in muscle in the growing fish.
