Doping lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (Li[NTf2]) into the N-ethyl,N′-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([C2mpyr][NTf2]) plastic crystal material has previously indicated order of magnitude enhancements in ion transport and conductivity over pure [C2mpyr][NTf2]. Recently, conductivity enhancements in this ionic plastic crystal induced by SiO2 nanoparticles have also been reported. In this work the inclusion of SiO2 nanoparticles in Li ion doped [C2mpyr][NTf2] has been investigated over a wide temperature range by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), impedance spectroscopy, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Solid state 1H NMR indicates that the addition of the nanoparticles increases the mobility of the [C2mpyr] cation and positron lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurements indicate an increase in mean defect size and defect concentration as a result of nanoparticle inclusion, especially with 10 wt% SiO2. Thus, the substantial drop in ion conductivity observed for this doped nanocomposite material was surprising. This decrease is most likely due to the decrease in mobility of the [NTf2] anion, possibly by its adsorption at the SiO2/grain boundary interface and concomitant decrease in mobility of the Li ion.

In this work, novel alkaline solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) with tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (Me4NOH·xH2O) have been developed, without addition of any volatile solvent. It was found that some polymers such as poly(sodium acrylate) had good compatibility with Me4NOH·xH2O. The polymer-Me4NOH·xH2O electrolytes thus prepared in this work appeared to have improved mechanical properties as compared with the pure hydroxide and remained highly conductive in the solid state (102 S cm−1 at ~40 °C). The thermal properties of the alkaline SPEs and the dependence of conductivity on composition and temperature are presented, and the relationships between properties and composition as well as conductivity mechanism for these new systems are discussed.

Choline dihydrogen phosphate has previously been shown to be a good ionic conductor as well as an excellent host for acid doping, leading to high proton conductivities required for e.g., electrochemical devices including proton membrane fuel cells and sensors. A combination of variable-temperature 1H solid-state NMR and 2D NMR pulse sequences, including 31P and 13C CODEX and 1H BaBa, show that the proton conduction mechanism primarily involves assisted transport via a restricted three-site motion of the phosphate unit around the P–O bond that is hydrogen bonded to the choline and exchange of protons between these anions. In other words, proton transport at ambient temperatures appears to occur most favorably along the crystallographic b axis, from phosphate dimer to dimer. At elevated temperatures exchange between the protons of the hydroxyl group on the choline cation and the hydrogen-bonded dihydrogen phosphate groups also contributes to the structural diffusion of the protons in this solid state conductor.

Addition of silica nanoparticles functionalised with lithium propane sulfonate to the organic ionic plastic crystal N-ethyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([C2mpyr][NTf2]) results in a significant increase in ionic conductivity. Analysis of these nanocomposites by impedance spectroscopy, NMR, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and Raman spectroscopy suggests that this is the result of higher matrix mobility due to an increase in defect size and concentration. The effect of these functionalised nanoparticles is compared to that previously observed for unfunctionalised nanoparticles in the lithium-doped and pure plastic crystal.

Investigations into the synthesis and utilisation of organic ionic plastic crystals have made significant progress in recent years, driven by a continued need for high conductivity solid state electrolytes for a range of electrochemical devices. There are a number of different aspects to research in this area; fundamental studies, utilising a wide range of analytical techniques, of both pure and doped plastic crystals, and the development of plastic crystal-based materials as electrolytes in, for example, lithium ion batteries. Progress in these areas is highlighted and the development of new organic ionic plastic crystals, including a new class of proton conductors, is discussed.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Laboratory studies have been used to identify nitric oxide as a notable mediator in neuronal death after acute brain injury. To our knowledge, this has not previously been confirmed with in vivo study in humans. Our purpose was to seek in vivo evidence for the induction of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in human acute brain injury by using proton MR spectroscopy.

METHODS: In vitro proton MR spectra were obtained in neural extracts from 30 human cadavers, and in vivo spectra were obtained in 20 patients with acute brain injury and in a similar number of control subjects.

RESULTS: We identified a unique peak at 3.15 ppm by using in vivo proton MR spectroscopy in eight of 20 patients with acute brain injury but not in 20 healthy volunteers (P < .002). On the basis of in vitro data, we have tentatively assigned this peak to citrulline, a NOS by-product.

CONCLUSION:
To our knowledge, our findings suggest, for the first time, that excitotoxicity may occur in human acute brain injury. Confirmation with the acquisition of spectra in very early acute cerebral injury would provide a rationale for the use of neuroprotective agents in these conditions, as well as a new noninvasive method for quantification.

In this work we investigated the synthesis of composite organic and inorganic membranes for proton conduction. Particles derived from metal alkoxides (M(OR)n) sol-gel processes (Ti, Zr, W with phosphoric acid) were embedded in polymeric matrices of poly-vinyl alcohol, (3-glycidoxypropyl)-trimethoxysilane and ethylene glycol. The structure of the composite membranes was complex as several IR peaks were convoluted, indicating the assignment of several functional groups. However, the peaks assigned to OH groups reduced in intensity in the composite membranes, indicating that cross-linking of hydroxyl groups in the organic and inorganic phases of the membrane may have occurred. The particles allowed for re-arrangement of the polymer matrix, as crystallinity was reduced compared to a polymer blank membrane. The composite membrane process resulted in homogeneous dispersion of nanoparticles into the polymer film. Proton conduction of the inorganic phase was mainly dominated by titania. Binary mixtures of titania phosphate (sample name TiP) resulted in proton conduction of 7.15 × 10−2 S.cm−1, one order of magnitude higher than zirconia phosphate (ZrP). The addition of Zr and W to TiP forming ternary or quaternary phases also led to lower proton conduction as compared to TiP. Similar trends were also observed for the composite membranes, though the TiP composite membrane proton conduction reduced after several hours of testing at 50°C, which was mainly attributed to acid leaching.

Many policy decisions for agricultural management in the coastal region closely depend on the extent of intrusion of sea water. In this study, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to model the spatial variation of Electrical Conductivity to determine the extent of sea water intrusion in the coastal area of Brisbane, Australia. Quarterly EC data obtained from the observation (monitoring) wells located along the coast is used for training ANN architecture. The study demonstrates that ANN is able to model the spatial variation of EC with very good accuracy (even with very less training records) when some spatial information is used as one of the inputs in the network training. The results considerable improvement when compared with the network trained without the distance information.

Titania nanotube films were produced by anodization of titanium foil. The titania nanotube films were annealed at different temperatures. Morphology evolution, phase transformation and electrical conductivity of the titania nanotubes were studied. Results showed that the nanotube walls became rough, porous and even collapsed after annealed at 400, 500 and 600°C respectively. Titania anatase phase formed after annealed at 400°C; the amount of anatase phase increased as the annealing temperature increased. The conductivity of the nanotube film annealed at 400°C was improved greatly compared with the conductivity of the as-anodized nanotube film. However, the conductivity of the nanotube films annealed at higher temperatures decreased. The effect of the morphology on the electronic conductivity of the titania nanotube films was discussed.
