Epidemiological studies have suggested that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) offers protection from atherosclerosis, a precursor of cardiovascular disease (CVD), in postmenopausal women. There is good evidence that oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) by leucocyte-derived reactive oxygen species plays a key role in development of an atherosclerotic plaque. Therefore we have investigated whether the possible protection against CVD by HRT could be due to immunomodulation, specifically of free radical production. The study involves 2 approaches: I) analysing the production of free radicals by leucocytes from women on HRT, 2) investigating the effect of I7p-oestradiol and progesterone on cultured myeloid cells (HL60 and U937). Free radical production by leucocytes was determined using a recently developed bioluminescent assay. In the assay, Pholasin® emits light in the presence of free radicals produced by the NADPH oxidase system of leucocytes stimulated with PMA or fMLP. Cell viability was also investigated using a bioluminescent assay (Cell Titer-Glo®) in which cytosolic ATP levels were measured by the production of luminescence in the presence of Luciferin/Luciferase reagent. Studies of leucocytes from HRT patients showed considerable variation in free radical production, which appeared to be dependent on HRT regime. Studies on the cultured cells showed that there was no cell proliferation at low hormone concentrations, while high concentrations caused cytotoxicity. The effect of hormones on free radical production in this in vitro model system is currently being investigated. The results show that the effects of the hormones on cells of the immune system are very dose dependent, and that both beneficial and adverse effects may occur. In conclusion, luminescent techniques offer a valuable and sensitive approach to studying inflammatory and oxidative processes both in vivo and in vitro.

It is well established that speech, language and phonological skills are closely associated with literacy, and that children with a family risk of dyslexia (FRD) tend to show deficits in each of these areas in the preschool years. This paper examines what the relationships are between FRD and these skills, and whether deficits in speech, language and phonological processing fully account for the increased risk of dyslexia in children with FRD. One hundred and fifty-three 4-6-year-old children, 44 of whom had FRD, completed a battery of speech, language, phonology and literacy tasks. Word reading and spelling were retested 6 months later, and text reading accuracy and reading comprehension were tested 3 years later. The children with FRD were at increased risk of developing difficulties in reading accuracy, but not reading comprehension. Four groups were compared: good and poor readers with and without FRD. In most cases good readers outperformed poor readers regardless of family history, but there was an effect of family history on naming and nonword repetition regardless of literacy outcome, suggesting a role for speech production skills as an endophenotype of dyslexia. Phonological processing predicted spelling, while language predicted text reading accuracy and comprehension. FRD was a significant additional predictor of reading and spelling after controlling for speech production, language and phonological processing, suggesting that children with FRD show additional difficulties in literacy that cannot be fully explained in terms of their language and phonological skills. A lean termelés javít a vállalatok operatív teljesítményén. Korábbi kutatásokkal összhangban ezt nemzetközi kérdőíves felmérésből származó eredmények is alátámasztják. Nem mutatható ki azonban egyértelmű kapcsolat a lean termelés és az üzleti teljesítmény között. A szerzők kutatásukban – kifejezetten a több lean eszközt elmélyülten használó és jó operatív eredményekkel rendelkező ún. haladó lean termelők üzleti eredményeire fókuszálva – azonosították az üzleti teljesítményt befolyásoló tényezőket. Bár számos tényező kívül esik a termelésmenedzsment hatáskörén (pl. piaci dinamika, új piacra lépők száma, személyre szabás), de a termék/szolgáltatás arányának befolyásolásán, a beszállítók és a kapacitástartalékok menedzsmentjén keresztül a termelésnek is van lehetősége az üzleti teljesítmény javítására. Végül, bár közvetlen kapcsolat nem mutatható ki a lean termelés és az üzleti teljesítmény között, de a szerzők várakozásai szerint a folyamatosan javuló operatív teljesítmény kiegyensúlyozott és stabil üzleti teljesítmény alapja lehet. A haladó lean vállalatok pedig nagyobb eséllyel kerülhetnek (maradhatnak?) a jó üzleti teljesítménnyel büszkélkedő vállalatok körébe(n). ____________ The lean production has improved the operational performance of companies. However a clear link between lean production and business performance can not be detected. In their research the authors have identified the factors affecting business performance focusing on business results of the advanced lean producers. Although a direct connection is not detected between lean production and business performance, but according to the author expects the continuously improving operational performance shall be a base for the balanced and stable business performance.

A Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem Versenyképességkutató Központjának 2004-ben lekérdezett kérdőíve alapján, ami 154 feldolgozóipari vállalat adatait tartalmazza, azt vizsgáljuk, hogy az ellátási lánc három lényeges vállalati funkciója, a marketing, a termelés és a logisztika milyen mértékben járul hozzá az üzleti eredményességhez. Az eredmények szerint a marketingnek és a termelésnek erősebb hatása van a vállalati teljesítményre, mint a logisztikának. A három funkció együttesen csekély, bár statisztikai értelemben szignifikáns szerepet játszik az üzleti sikerben. _____ Companies are complex organizations where a lot of activities and processes have to work properly in order to reach success. Depending on several factors, sometimes some activities get more emphasis while others work in the background. Since organizational functions have separate literature and practical knowledge, and transit between them is rare, we do have very little knowledge on how the various functions together contribute to company success. Based on a wide-scale empirical study on Hungarian competitiveness, which includes data on 154 companies from the process industry, we examine to what extent three functions of the supply chain, marketing, manufacturing and logistics, can contribute to business success. Results show that marketing and manufacturing have larger effect on company performance than logistics. However, the three functions together play a minor, although significant role in company success.

This paper investigates the problem of labour value determination in the presence of joint production. The purpose is to clarify the main problems involved, and critically review some recent proposals. In the case of joint production the inputs can not be divided between products in a natural way. As a result, none of the three alternative definitions given by Marx for labour values can generally be applied in this case. This means that the definition of labour values has to be generalized. The author points out that any such generalization will contradict some original Marxian proposals; therefore, there is no Marxian solution to the problem. One could still attempt to find a generalization Marxian enough in its spirit. The author lists some criteria that such a generalization could be tested against. He points out that the solution suggested by Morishima fails to meet most of the above criteria. It will be argued that a solution which relies on a price dependent division of inputs between products is closer to the general spirit of Marxian analysis.

This study focuses on quantifying explicitly the sediment budget of deeply incised ravines in the lower Le Sueur River watershed, in southern Minnesota. High-rate-gully-erosion equations along with the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) were implemented in a numerical modeling approach that is based on a time-integration of the sediment balance equations. The model estimates the rates of ravine width and depth change and the amount of sediment periodically flushing from the ravines. Components of the sediment budget of the ravines were simulated with the model and results suggest that the ravine walls are the major sediment source in the ravines. A sensitivity analysis revealed that the erodibility coefficients of the gully bed and wall, the local slope angle and the Manning’s coefficient are the key parameters controlling the rate of sediment production. Recommendations to guide further monitoring efforts in the watershed and increased detail modeling approaches are highlighted as a result of this modeling effort.

Mangrove forests are highly productive but globally threatened coastal ecosystems, whose role in the carbon budget of the coastal zone has long been debated. Here we provide a comprehensive synthesis of the available data on carbon fluxes in mangrove ecosystems. A reassessment of global mangrove primary production from the literature results in a conservative estimate of ∼218 ± 72 Tg C a−1. When using the best available estimates of various carbon sinks (organic carbon export, sediment burial, and mineralization), it appears that >50% of the carbon fixed by mangrove vegetation is unaccounted for. This unaccounted carbon sink is conservatively estimated at ∼112 ± 85 Tg C a−1, equivalent in magnitude to ∼30–40% of the global riverine organic carbon input to the coastal zone. Our analysis suggests that mineralization is severely underestimated, and that the majority of carbon export from mangroves to adjacent waters occurs as dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). CO2 efflux from sediments and creek waters and tidal export of DIC appear to be the major sinks. These processes are quantitatively comparable in magnitude to the unaccounted carbon sink in current budgets, but are not yet adequately constrained with the limited published data available so far.

Fossil fuels constitute a significant fraction of the world's energy demand. The burning of fossil fuels emits huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Therefore, the limited availability of fossil fuel resources and the environmental impact of their use require a change to alternative energy sources or carriers (such as hydrogen) in the foreseeable future. The development of methods to mitigate carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere is equally important. Hence, extensive research has been carried out on the development of cost-effective technologies for carbon dioxide capture and techniques to establish hydrogen economy. Hydrogen is a clean energy fuel with a very high specific energy content of about 120MJ/kg and an energy density of 10Wh/kg. However, its potential is limited by the lack of environment-friendly production methods and a suitable storage medium. Conventional hydrogen production methods such as Steam-methane-reformation and Coal-gasification were modified by the inclusion of NaOH. The modified methods are thermodynamically more favorable and can be regarded as near-zero emission production routes. Further, suitable catalysts were employed to accelerate the proposed NaOH-assisted reactions and a relation between reaction yield and catalyst size has been established. A 1:1:1 molar mixture of LiAlH 4, NaNH2 and MgH2 were investigated as a potential hydrogen storage medium. The hydrogen desorption mechanism was explored using in-situ XRD and Raman Spectroscopy. Mesoporous metal oxides were assessed for CO2 capture at both power and non-power sectors. A 96.96% of mesoporous MgO (325 mesh size, surface area = 95.08 ± 1.5 m2/g) was converted to MgCO 3 at 350°C and 10 bars CO2. But the absorption capacity of 1h ball milled zinc oxide was low, 0.198 gCO2 /gZnO at 75°C and 10 bars CO2. Interestingly, 57% mass conversion of Fe and Fe 3O4 mixture to FeCO3 was observed at 200°C and 10 bars CO2. MgO, ZnO and Fe3O4 could be completely regenerated at 550°C, 250°C and 350°C respectively. Furthermore, the possible retrofit of MgO and a mixture of Fe and Fe3O 4 to a 300 MWe coal-fired power plant and iron making industry were also evaluated.

Movement strategies of small forage fish (<8 cm total length) between temporary and permanent wetland habitats affect their overall population growth and biomass concentrations, i.e., availability to predators. These fish are often the key energy link between primary producers and top predators, such as wading birds, which require high concentrations of stranded fish in accessible depths. Expansion and contraction of seasonal wetlands induce a sequential alternation between rapid biomass growth and concentration, creating the conditions for local stranding of small fish as they move in response to varying water levels. To better understand how landscape topography, hydrology, and fish behavior interact to create high densities of stranded fish, we first simulated population dynamics of small fish, within a dynamic food web, with different traits for movement strategy and growth rate, across an artificial, spatially explicit, heterogeneous, two-dimensional marsh slough landscape, using hydrologic variability as the driver for movement. Model output showed that fish with the highest tendency to invade newly flooded marsh areas built up the largest populations over long time periods with stable hydrologic patterns. A higher probability to become stranded had negative effects on long-term population size, and offset the contribution of that species to stranded biomass. The model was next applied to the topography of a 10 km × 10 km area of Everglades landscape. The details of the topography were highly important in channeling fish movements and creating spatiotemporal patterns of fish movement and stranding. This output provides data that can be compared in the future with observed locations of fish biomass concentrations, or such surrogates as phosphorus ‘hotspots’ in the marsh.
