The strategic plan for bridge engineering issued by AASHTO in 2005 identified extending the service life and optimizing structural systems of bridges in the United States as two grand challenges in bridge engineering, with the objective of producing safer bridges that have a minimum service life of 75 years and reduced maintenance cost. Material deterioration was identified as one of the primary challenges to achieving the objective of extended life. In substructural applications (e.g., deep foundations), construction materials such as timber, steel, and concrete are subjected to deterioration due to environmental impacts. Using innovative and new materials for foundation applications makes the AASHTO objective of 75 years service life achievable. Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) with compressive strength of 180 MPa (26,000 psi) and excellent durability has been used in superstructure applications but not in geotechnical and foundation applications. This study explores the use of precast, prestressed UHPC piles in future foundations of bridges and other structures. An H-shaped UHPC section, which is 10-in. (250-mm) deep with weight similar to that of an HP10×57 steel pile, was designed to improve constructability and reduce cost. In this project, instrumented UHPC piles were cast and laboratory and field tests were conducted. Laboratory tests were used to verify the moment-curvature response of UHPC pile section. In the field, two UHPC piles have been successfully driven in glacial till clay soil and load tested under vertical and lateral loads. This report provides a complete set of results for the field investigation conducted on UHPC H-shaped piles. Test results, durability, drivability, and other material advantages over normal concrete and steel indicate that UHPC piles are a viable alternative to achieve the goals of AASHTO strategic plan.

Trenchless technologies are methods used for the construction and rehabilitation of underground utility pipes. These methods are growing increasingly popular due to their versatility and their potential to lower project costs. However, the use of trenchless technologies in Iowa and their effects on surrounding soil and nearby structures has not been adequately documented. Surveys of and interviews with professionals working in trenchless-related industries in Iowa were conducted, and the results were analyzed and compared to survey results from the United States as a whole. The surveys focused on method familiarity, pavement distress observed, reliability of trenchless methods, and future improvements. Results indicate that the frequency of pavement distress or other trenchless-related issues are an ongoing problem in the industry. Inadequate soil information and quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) are partially to blame. Fieldwork involving the observation of trenchless construction projects was undertaken with the purpose of documenting current practices and applications of trenchless technology in the United States and Iowa. Field tests were performed in which push-in pressure cells were used to measure the soil stresses induced by trenchless construction methods. A program of laboratory soil testing was carried out in conjunction with the field testing. Soil testing showed that the installations were made in sandy clay or well-graded sand with silt and gravel. Pipes were installed primarily using horizontal directional drilling with pipe diameters from 3 to 12 inches. Pressure cell monitoring was conducted during the following construction phases: pilot bore, pre-reaming, and combined pipe pulling and reaming. The greatest increase in lateral earth pressure was 5.6 psi and was detected 2.1 feet from the centerline of the bore during a pilot hole operation in sandy lean clay. Measurements from 1.0 to 2.5 psi were common. Comparisons were made between field measurements and analytical and finite element calculation methods.

Among the variety of road users and vehicle types that travel on U.S. public roadways, slow moving vehicles (SMVs) present unique safety and operations issues. SMVs include vehicles that do not maintain a constant speed of 25 mph, such as large farm equipment, construction vehicles, or horse-drawn buggies. Though the number of crashes involving SMVs is relatively small, SMV crashes tend to be severe. Additionally, SMVs can be encountered regularly on non-Interstate/non-expressway public roadways, but motorists may not be accustomed to these vehicles. This project was designed to improve transportation safety for SMVs on Iowa’s public roadway system. This report includes a literature review that shows various SMV statistics and laws across the United States, a crash study based on three years of Iowa SMV crash data, and recommendations from the SMV community.

The objective is to determine the optimum percentage of water needed to produce the best foam properties for a given asphalt binder. The optimum water content is determined by achieving the maximum expansion ratio and half-life of the foamed asphalt. Expansion ratio is defined as the maximum volume over its original volume and half-life is defined as the time in seconds for foam to become a half of its maximum volume.

Currently, individuals including designers, contractors, and owners learn about the project requirements by studying a combination of paper and electronic copies of the construction documents including the drawings, specifications (standard and supplemental), road and bridge standard drawings, design criteria, contracts, addenda, and change orders. This can be a tedious process since one needs to go back and forth between the various documents (paper or electronic) to obtain information about the entire project. Object-oriented computer-aided design (OO-CAD) is an innovative technology that can bring a change to this process by graphical portrayal of information. OO-CAD allows users to point and click on portions of an object-oriented drawing that are then linked to relevant databases of information (e.g., specifications, procurement status, and shop drawings). The vision of this study is to turn paper-based design standards and construction specifications into an object-oriented design and specification (OODAS) system or a visual electronic reference library (ERL). Individuals can use the system through a handheld wireless book-size laptop that includes all of the necessary software for operating in a 3D environment. All parties involved in transportation projects can access all of the standards and requirements simultaneously using a 3D graphical interface. By using this system, users will have all of the design elements and all of the specifications readily available without concerns of omissions. A prototype object-oriented model was created and demonstrated to potential users representing counties, cities, and the state. Findings suggest that a system like this could improve productivity to find information by as much as 75% and provide a greater sense of confidence that all relevant information had been identified. It was also apparent that this system would be used by more people in construction than in design. There was also concern related to the cost to develop and maintain the complete system. The future direction should focus on a project-based system that can help the contractors and DOT inspectors find information (e.g., road standards, specifications, instructional memorandums) more rapidly as it pertains to a specific project.

The objective of this project was to assess the predictive accuracy of flood frequency estimation for small Iowa streams based on the Rational Method, the NRCS curve number approach, and the Iowa Runoff Chart. The evaluation was based on comparisons of flood frequency estimates at sites with sufficiently long streamgage records in the Midwest, and selected urban sites throughout the United States. The predictive accuracy and systematic biases (under- or over-estimation) of the approaches was evaluated based on forty-six Midwest sites and twenty-one urban sites. The sensitivity of several watershed characteristics such as soil properties, slope, and land use classification was also explored. Recommendations on needed changes or refinements for applications to Iowa streams are made.

Changes in technology have an impact on standard practice, materials, and equipment. The traffic signal industry is constantly producing more energy-efficient and durable equipment, better communications, and more sophisticated detection and monitoring capabilities. Accordingly, this project provides an update to the traffic signal content within the Statewide Urban Design and Specifications (SUDAS) Design Manual and Standard Specifications. This work was completed through a technical advisory committee with a variety of participants representing contractors, the Iowa Department of Transportation, cities, consultants, vendors, and university research and support staff.

In response to the mandate on Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) implementations by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on all new bridge projects initiated after October 1, 2007, the Iowa Highway Research Board (IHRB) sponsored these research projects to develop regional LRFD recommendations. The LRFD development was performed using the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) Pile Load Test database (PILOT). To increase the data points for LRFD development, develop LRFD recommendations for dynamic methods, and validate the results of LRFD calibration, 10 full-scale field tests on the most commonly used steel H-piles (e.g., HP 10 x 42) were conducted throughout Iowa. Detailed in situ soil investigations were carried out, push-in pressure cells were installed, and laboratory soil tests were performed. Pile responses during driving, at the end of driving (EOD), and at re-strikes were monitored using the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA), following with the CAse Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP) analysis. The hammer blow counts were recorded for Wave Equation Analysis Program (WEAP) and dynamic formulas. Static load tests (SLTs) were performed and the pile capacities were determined based on the Davisson’s criteria. The extensive experimental research studies generated important data for analytical and computational investigations. The SLT measured load-displacements were compared with the simulated results obtained using a model of the TZPILE program and using the modified borehole shear test method. Two analytical pile setup quantification methods, in terms of soil properties, were developed and validated. A new calibration procedure was developed to incorporate pile setup into LRFD.

Three pavement design software packages were compared with regards to how they were different in determining design input parameters and their influences on the pavement thickness. StreetPave designs the concrete pavement thickness based on the PCA method and the equivalent asphalt pavement thickness. The WinPAS software performs both concrete and asphalt pavements following the AASHTO 1993 design method. The APAI software designs asphalt pavements based on pre-mechanistic/empirical AASHTO methodology. First, the following four critical design input parameters were identified: traffic, subgrade strength, reliability, and design life. The sensitivity analysis of these four design input parameters were performed using three pavement design software packages to identify which input parameters require the most attention during pavement design. Based on the current pavement design procedures and sensitivity analysis results, a prototype pavement design and sensitivity analysis (PD&SA) software package was developed to retrieve the pavement thickness design value for a given condition and allow a user to perform a pavement design sensitivity analysis. The prototype PD&SA software is a computer program that stores pavement design results in database that is designed for the user to input design data from the variety of design programs and query design results for given conditions. The prototype Pavement Design and Sensitivity Analysis (PA&SA) software package was developed to demonstrate the concept of retrieving the pavement design results from the database for a design sensitivity analysis. This final report does not include the prototype software which will be validated and tested during the next phase.

The present study is an integral part of a broader study focused on the design and implementation of self-cleaning culverts, i.e., configurations that prevent the formation of sediment deposits after culvert construction or cleaning. Sediment deposition at culverts is influenced by many factors, including the size and characteristics of material of which the channel is composed, the hydraulic characteristics generated under different hydrology events, the culvert geometry design, channel transition design, and the vegetation around the channel. The multitude of combinations produced by this set of variables makes the investigation of practical situations a complex undertaking. In addition to the considerations above, the field and analytical observations have revealed flow complexities affecting the flow and sediment transport through culverts that further increase the dimensions of the investigation. The flow complexities investigated in this study entail: flow non-uniformity in the areas of transition to and from the culvert, flow unsteadiness due to the flood wave propagation through the channel, and the asynchronous correlation between the flow and sediment hydrographs resulting from storm events. To date, the literature contains no systematic studies on sediment transport through multi-box culverts or investigations on the adverse effects of sediment deposition at culverts. Moreover, there is limited knowledge about the non-uniform, unsteady sediment transport in channels of variable geometry. Furthermore, there are few readily useable (inexpensive and practical) numerical models that can reliably simulate flow and sediment transport in such complex situations. Given the current state of knowledge, the main goal of the present study is to investigate the above flow complexities in order to provide the needed insights for a series of ongoing culvert studies. The research was phased so that field observations were conducted first to understand the culvert behavior in Iowa landscape. Modeling through complementary hydraulic model and numerical experiments was subsequently carried out to gain the practical knowledge for the development of the self-cleaning culvert designs.

Les femmes concernées par cette recherche sont des femmes bosniaques, requérantes d'asile en Suisse, suivies au sein de l'association « Appartenances ». Elles ont quitté leur pays à la suite de la prise de la ville de Srebrenica, en juillet 1995. Lors de cet exode, elles ont été séparées de leurs maris, qui sont aujourd'hui encore portés disparus. Ces femmes partagent une expérience douloureuse qui transparaît derrière un certain nombre de symptômes physiques et psychiques. Nous avons été frappés par la répétition de pertes importantes, sans que les conditions permettant un travail de deuil soient réunies. Aucune signification ne peut être attribuée aux disparitions et aux décès, masqués par le silence politique et par l'impossibilité d'accomplir un rituel. Le deuil peut ainsi se compliquer jusqu'à devenir un deuil impossible, dont le prototype pourrait être le « deuil gelé » lors d'une disparition. D'autre part, le stress et l'attaque de l'identité occasionnés par les traumatismes et l'exil ont coupé ces femmes de leurs ressources personnelles et culturelles. La perte d'une image entière de soi est prolongée par le statut précaire de requérant d'asile et par la perte des espoirs mis dans le pays d'accueil. Devant la complexité de cette problématique, nous nous sommes demandés sur quel aspect axer la prise en charge thérapeutique. Nous avons décidé de travailler sur le vécu et les deuils actuels de ces patientes (stress post-traumatique et statut précaire en Suisse). Le concept-clé qui a étayé cette recherche s'inspire de Pollock (7): « le processus de deuil devient très significatif, dans le sens qu 'il est apparemment une des formes les plus universelles de l'adaptation et de la croissance à travers la structuration, disponible pour l'homme. » Dès lors, nous avons fait l'hypothèse que si le deuil est une forme universelle d'adaptation, l'élaboration d'un travail de deuil ou d'un processus d'adaptation quel qu'il soit, pourra servir d'apprentissage pour l'élaboration d'autres deuils. Concrètement, en travaillant sur le rétablissement de leur identité, les femmes pourront retrouver un accès à leurs ressources personnelles et culturelles, tandis que travailler sur les espoirs et déceptions face au statut en Suisse permettra de développer des moyens permettant plus de contrôle sur l'environnement. Leur autonomie rétablie, elles pourront consacrer leurs énergies à attribuer une signification à leur vécu et faire face aux autres deuils paralysant leur guérison. Nous avons assisté aux entretiens thérapeutiques, en récoltant des témoignages sur la base d'un canevas d'entretien semi-structuré, puis nous avons transposé les éléments sur une grille d'analyse regroupant les informations en items. L'analyse de ces entretiens nous a permis de préciser notre hypothèse et de développer des pistes de réflexion pour l'accompagnement thérapeutique de personnes vivant une disparition. A l'issue de ce travail, nous pouvons tirer des parallèles entre les processus d'élaboration des divers deuils. Les femmes sont entrées peu à peu dans le souvenir de la personne aimée et non plus dans le souvenir des événements traumatiques qui ont marqué sa disparition. S'appuyant alors sur la « mémoire sereine » de Kristeva (1) une recherche de signification a pu être entreprise, rejoignant ce que Métraux et Fleuiy (43) définissent comme la santé : « ... se voir créateur du sens qu'on veut donner à sa propre existence, à ses actes et à ses projets. »

Résumé large public: Une altération localisée du métabolisme du glucose, le substrat énergétique préférentiellement utilisé dans le cerveau, est un trait caractéristique précoce de la maladie d'Alzheimer (MA). Il est maintenant largement admis que le beta-amyloïde, la neuroinflammation et le stress oxydatif participent au développement de la MA. Cependant les mécanismes cellulaires de la pathogenèse restent à identifier. Le métabolisme cérébral a ceci de remarquable qu'il repose sur la coopération entre deux types cellulaires, ainsi les astrocytes et les neurones constituent une unité métabolique. Les astrocytes sont notamment responsables de fournir aux neurones des substrats énergétiques, ainsi que des précurseurs du glutathion pour la défense contre le stress oxydatif. Ces fonctions astrocytaires sont essentielles au bon fonctionnement et à la survie neuronale; par conséquent, une altération de ces fonctions astrocytaires pourrait participer au développement de certaines maladies cérébrales. Le but de ce travail est, dans un premier temps, d'explorer les effets de médiateurs de la neuroinflammation (les cytokines pro-inflammatoires) et du peptide beta-amyloïde sur le métabolisme des astrocytes corticaux, en se focalisant sur les éléments en lien avec le métabolisme énergétique et le stress oxydatif. Puis, dans un second temps, de caractériser les conséquences pour les neurones des modifications du métabolisme astrocytaire induites par ces substances. Les résultats obtenus ici montrent que les cytokines pro-inflammatoires et le beta-amyloïde induisent une profonde altération du métabolisme astrocytaire, selon deux profils distincts. Les cytokines pro-inflammatoires, particulièrement en combinaison, agissent comme « découpleurs » du métabolisme énergétique du glucose, en diminuant l'apport potentiel de substrats énergétiques aux neurones. En plus de son effet propre, le peptide beta-amyloïde potentialise les effets des cytokines pro-inflammatoires. Or, dans le cerveau de patients atteints de la MA, les astrocytes sont exposés simultanément à ces deux types de substances. Les deux types de substances ont un effet ambivalent en termes de stress oxydatif. Ils induisent à la fois une augmentation de la libération de glutathion (potentiellement protecteur pour les neurones voisins) et la production d'espèces réactives de l'oxygène (potentiellement toxiques). Etant donné l'importance de la coopération entre astrocytes et neurones, ces modulations du métabolisme astrocytaire pourraient donc avoir un retentissement majeur sur les cellules environnantes, et en particulier sur la fonction et la survie neuronale. Les astrocytes sont notamment responsables de fournir aux neurones des substrats énergétiques, tels que le lactate, ainsi que des précurseurs du glutathion pour la défense contre le stress oxydatif. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les cytokines pro-inflammatoires et le beta-amyloïde induisent une profonde altération du métabolisme astrocytaire, selon deux profils distincts. Les cytokines pro-inflammatoires, particulièrement en combinaison, agissent comme « découpleurs » du métabolisme glycolytique astrocytaire. Après 48 heures, le traitement avec TNFα et Il-lß cause une augmentation de la capture de glucose et de son métabolisme dans la voie des pentoses phosphates et dans le cycle de Krebs. A l'inverse, il cause une diminution de la libération de lactate et des stocks cellulaires de glycogène. En combinaison avec les cytokines tel qu'in vivo dans les cerveaux de patients atteints de MA, le peptide betaamyloïde potentialise les effets décrits ci-dessus. Isolément, le Aß cause une augmentation coordonnée de la capture de glucose et de toutes les voies de son métabolisme (libération de lactate, glycogenèse, voie des pentoses phosphate et cycle de Krebs). Les traitements altèrent peu les taux de glutathion intracellulaires, par contre ils augmentent massivement la libération de glutathion dans le milieu extracellulaire. A l'inverse, les deux types de traitements augmentent la production intracellulaire d'espèces réactives de l'oxygène (ROS). De plus, les cytokines pro-inflammatoires en combinaison augmentent massivement la production des ROS dans l'espace extracellulaire. Afin de caractériser l'impact de ces altérations métaboliques sur la viabilité des neurones environnants, un modèle de co-culture et des milieux conditionnés astrocytaires ont été utilisés. Les résultats montrent qu'en l'absence d'une source exogène d'antioxydants, la présence d'astrocytes favorise la viabilité neuronale ainsi que leur défense contre le stress oxydatif. Cette propriété n'est cependant pas modulée par les différents traitements. D'autre part, la présence d'astrocytes, et non de milieu conditionné, protège les neurones contre l'excitotoxicité due au glutamate. Les astrocytes prétraités (aussi bien avec le beta-amyloïde qu'avec les cytokines pro-inflammatoires) perdent cette propriété. Cet élément suggère que la perturbation du métabolisme astrocytaire causé par les cytokines pro-inflammatoires ou le beta-amyloïde pourrait participer à l'atteinte de la viabilité neuronale associée à certaines pathologies neurodégénératives.

This report concerns a proposed Parkway and Scenic Highway along both sides of the Missouri River in Harrison, Pottawattamie and Mills County in Iowa and Washington, Douglas and Sarpy Counties in Nebraska. This Parkway will make the Missouri River valley accessible to the public, link existing and planned attractions and facilitate planned development while at the same time preserving for posterity the best of the natural attributes of the area.
