Resumo:
Consider the problem of scheduling sporadic messages with deadlines on a wireless channel. We propose a collision-free medium access control (MAC) protocol which implements static-priority scheduling and present a schedulability analysis technique for the protocol. The MAC protocol allows multiple masters and is fully distributed; it is an adaptation to a wireless channel of the dominance protocol used in the CAN bus. But unlike that protocol, our protocol does not require a node having the ability to receive an incoming bit from the channel while transmitting to the channel.

The Robuter is a robotic mobile platform that is located in the “Hands-On” Laboratory of the IPP-Hurray! Research Group, at the School of Engineering of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. Recently, the Robuter was subject of an upgrading process addressing two essential areas: the Hardware Architecture and the Software Architecture. This upgrade in process was triggered due to technical problems on-board of the robot and also to the fact that the hardware/software architecture has become obsolete. This Technical Report overviews the most important aspects of the new Hardware and Software Architectures of the Robuter. This document also presents a first approach on the first steps towards the use of the Robuter platform, and provides some hints on future work that may be carried out using this mobile platform.

Embedded systems are increasingly complex and dynamic, imposing progressively higher developing time and costs. Tuning a particular system for deployment is thus becoming more demanding. Furthermore when considering systems which have to adapt themselves to evolving requirements and changing service requests. In this perspective, run-time monitoring of the system behaviour becomes an important requirement, allowing to dynamically capturing the actual scheduling progress and resource utilization. For this to succeed, operating systems need to expose their internal behaviour and state, making it available to external applications, and a runtime monitoring mechanism must be available. However, such mechanism can impose a burden in the system itself if not wisely used. In this paper we explore this problem and propose a framework, which is intended to provide this run-time mechanism whilst achieving code separation, run-time efficiency and flexibility for the final developer.

In previous works we have proposed a hybrid wired/wireless PROFIBUS solution where the interconnection between the heterogeneous media was accomplished through bridge-like devices with wireless stations being able to move between different wireless cells. Additionally, we had also proposed a worst-case timing analysis assuming that stations were stationary. In this paper we advance these previous works by proposing a worst-case timing analysis for the system’s message streams considering the effect of inter-cell mobility.

Resource constraints are becoming a problem as many of the wireless mobile devices have increased generality. Our work tries to address this growing demand on resources and performance, by proposing the dynamic selection of neighbor nodes for cooperative service execution. This selection is in uenced by user's quality of service requirements expressed in his request, tailoring provided service to user's speci c needs. In this paper we improve our proposal's formulation algorithm with the ability to trade o time for the quality of the solution. At any given time, a complete solution for service execution exists, and the quality of that solution is expected to improve overtime.

A dynamic scheduler that supports the coexistence of guaranteed and non-guaranteed bandwidth servers is proposed. Overloads are handled by an efficient reclaiming of residual capacities originated by early completions as well as by allowing reserved capacity stealing of non-guaranteed bandwidth servers. The proposed dynamic budget accounting mechanism ensures that at a particular time the currently executing server is using a residual capacity, its own capacity or is stealing some reserved capacity, eliminating the need of additional server states or unbounded queues. The server to which the budget accounting is going to be performed is dynamically determined at the time instant when a capacity is needed. This paper describes and evaluates the proposed scheduling algorithm, showing that it can efficiently reduce the mean tardiness of periodic jobs. The achieved results become even more significant when tasks’ computation times have a large variance.

In this paper we present a framework for managing QoS-aware applications in a dynamic, ad-hoc, distributed environment. This framework considers an available set of wireless/mobile and fixed nodes, which may temporally form groups in order to process a set of related services, and where there is the need to support different levels of service and different combinations of quality requirements. This framework is being developed both for testing and validating an approach, based on multidimensional QoS properties, which provides service negotiation and proposal evaluation algorithms, and for assessing the suitability of the Ada language to be used in the context of dynamic, QoS-aware systems.

Constatando que a estratégia publicitária da Benetton se encadeia sistematicamente no que podemos considerar uma sequência do real, o presente texto analisa as significações das imagens das campanhas publicitárias da Benetton entre 1984 e 1998, identificando a forma como os temas se relacionam com problemáticas e acontecimentos que marcaram o espaço publico na altura. É, assim, analisado o modo como grandes acontecimentos e questões de debate público se transformaram em temas de publicidade. No sentido de visualizar a investigação, o autor apresenta dois discursos em paralelo: um com fragmentos das notícias sobre os grandes acontecimentos relacionados com os temas em análise, disposto numa ordem diacrónica, e outro com a análise das imagens, para a qual se socorreu de uma grande variedade de perspectivas teóricas.

Embora as ciências da comunicação em Portugal somem já uma história com quase 35 anos, que começa muito incipientemente em 1979 com a introdução do ensino da comunicação nas universidades portuguesas, são ainda muito exigentes os desafios que enfrentamos. E nunca como hoje corremos o risco do retrocesso. Nas últimas duas décadas, criámos centros de investigação e lançámos publicações especializadas. Doutoraram-se mais de duas centenas de professores e investigadores, estando integrados atualmente em programas doutorais muito perto de 500 estudantes. Fizemos um longo caminho que nos permitiu sonhar com uma grande comunidade científica. Será irrepetível nos próximos anos o ritmo de crescimento que temos vivido. São conhecidos de todos os fatores que nos fragilizam. O desinvestimento político e financeiro nas ciências sociais e humanas e o desinteresse aparente pela produção científica em língua portuguesa, a par com a crise económica que inibe o sonho de prosseguir os estudos, são hoje razões de preocupação e uma ameaça aos padrões de qualidade, de originalidade e de extensão finalmente alcançados. Internacionalizar é hoje a palavra de ordem. Assim como criar emprego e proporcionar impacto socioeconómico na região e no país. Ainda que eventualmente compreensíveis, estes requisitos para validar a investigação que fazemos ignoram os tempos próprios do conhecimento nesta área, onde só a médio prazo se podem notar os efeitos do nosso trabalho. São também por isso equivocados os critérios de qualidade que nos empurram para métricas de produção que não se compaginam com a natureza das ciências da comunicação. O tema do VIII Congresso da Sopcom não é alheio a estes desafios. “Comunicação global, cultura e tecnologia” é o mote para refletirmos, em tempos de crise, sobre esta cultura da internacionalização e sobre as tecnologias disponíveis para a promoção desse ideal de comunicação global. Eis, pois, as três armas com que nos fazemos a campo em mais um contributo para a consolidação das ciências da comunicação em Portugal. Contamos para isso com mais de 200 comunicações, distribuídas por dezenas de sessões paralelas, e com oito intervenções em quatro sessões plenárias. Juntam-se a este programa científico cinco convidados de Espanha, França e Brasil - Margarita Ledo, Miquel de Moragas, Alain Kiyindou, Antônio Hohlfeldt e Muniz Sodré. Esperamos finalmente acolher pela primeira vez muitos dos novos investigadores que se têm associado à Sopcom. Nos trabalhos científicos como nas pausas para café e no jantar oficial, é o espírito de um grupo jovem e audaz que se espera cultivar. Que este congresso seja para todos momento de encontro, de partilha e também de esperança na solidariedade junto dos pares, que é o mesmo que dizer na associação de interesses, de iniciativas e de realizações. OBJETIVO: Avaliar as oportunidades presentes no ambiente domiciliar para o desenvolvimento motor de lactentes. MÉTODOS: Estudo epidemiológico de base populacional, transversal, realizado com 239 lactentes com idade entre três e 18 meses, residentes no município de Juiz de Fora, MG, em 2010. Os participantes foram selecionados por amostragem aleatória estratificada, conglomerada, em múltiplos estágios. Para avaliar a qualidade e quantidade de estímulo motor no ambiente domiciliar foi utilizado o instrumento Affordance in the Home Environment for Motor Development - Infant Scale. Procedeu-se a análise bivariada com aplicação do teste qui-quadrado, seguida de regressão logística multinomial para verificar a associação entre as oportunidades presentes no domicílio e fatores biológicos, comportamentais, demográficos e socioeconômicos. RESULTADOS: As oportunidades de estimulação ambiental foram relativamente baixas. Na análise bivariada, para a faixa etária de três a nove meses, foi encontrada associação com os fatores: ordem de nascimento (p = 0,06), classificação socioeconômica (p = 0,08), renda mensal (p = 0,06) e renda per capita (p = 0,03). No modelo de regressão, prevaleceu a classificação socioeconômica (RC = 7,46; p = 0,03). Para a faixa etária de dez a 18 meses, os fatores associados, na análise bivariada, foram: estado civil materno (p < 0,01), convívio da criança com o pai (p = 0,08), chefe da família (p = 0,04), número de pessoas no domicílio (p = 0,05), escolaridade materna (p < 0,01) e paterna (p < 0,01), classificação socioeconômica (p < 0,01) e renda per capita (p = 0,03). No modelo de regressão, o estado civil materno (RC = 4,83; p = 0,02), escolaridade materna (RC = 0,29; p = 0,03) e paterna (RC = 0,33; p = 0,04) permaneceram associados às oportunidades de estimulação ambiental. CONCLUSÕES: A união estável dos pais, maior escolaridade materna e paterna e maior nível econômico foram os fatores associados às melhores oportunidades de estimulação motora no lar.

The overall goal of the REMPLI project is to design and implement a communication infrastructure for distributed data acquisition and remote control operations using the power grid as the communication medium. The primary target application is remote meter reading with high time resolution, where the meters can be energy, heat, gas, or water meters. The users of the system (e.g. utility companies) will benefit from the REMPLI system by gaining more detailed information about how energy is consumed by the end-users. In this context, the power-line communication (PLC) is deployed to cover the distance between utility company’s Private Network and the end user. This document specifies a protocol for real-time PLC, in the framework of the REMPLI project. It mainly comprises the Network Layer and Data Link Layer. The protocol was designed having into consideration the specific aspects of the network: different network typologies (star, tree, ring, multiple paths), dynamic changes in network topology (due to network maintenance, hazards, etc.), communication lines strongly affected by noise.

Although power-line communication (PLC) is not a new technology, its use to support communication with timing requirements is still the focus of ongoing research. Recently, a new infrastructure was presented, intended for communication using power lines from a central location to geographically dispersed nodes using inexpensive devices. This new infrastructure uses a two-level hierarchical power-line system, together with an IP-based network. Within this infrastructure, in order to provide end-toend communication through the two levels of the powerline system, it is necessary to fully understand the behaviour of the underlying network layers. The masterslave behaviour of the PLC MAC, together with the inherent dynamic topology of power-line networks are important issues that must be fully characterised. Therefore, in this paper we present a simulation model which is being used to study and characterise the behaviour of power-line communication.

Users of wireless devices increasingly demand access to multimedia content with speci c quality of service requirements. Users might tolerate di erent levels of service, or could be satis ed with di erent quality combinations choices. However, multimedia processing introduces heavy resource requirements on the client side. Our work tries to address the growing demand on resources and performance requirements, by allowing wireless nodes to cooperate with each other to meet resource allocation requests and handle stringent constraints, opportunistically taking advantage of the local ad-hoc network that is created spontaneously, as nodes move in range of each other, forming a temporary coalition for service execution. Coalition formation is necessary when a single node cannot execute a speci c service, but it may also be bene cial when groups perform more e ciently when compared to a single s node performance.

A number of characteristics are boosting the eagerness of extending Ethernet to also cover factory-floor distributed real-time applications. Full-duplex links, non-blocking and priority-based switching, bandwidth availability, just to mention a few, are characteristics upon which that eagerness is building up. But, will Ethernet technologies really manage to replace traditional Fieldbus networks? To this question, Fieldbus fundamentalists often argue that the two technologies are not comparable. In fact, Ethernet technology, by itself, does not include features above the lower layers of the OSI communication model. Where are the higher layers that permit building real industrial applications? And, taking for free that they are available, what is the impact of those protocols, mechanisms and application models on the overall performance of Ethernetbased distributed factory-floor applications? In this paper we provide some contributions that may pave the way towards providing some reasonable answers to these issues.

Full-duplex links, non-blocking and priority-based switching, bandwidth availability, just to mention a few, are characteristics upon which that eagerness is building up. But, will Ethernet technologies really manage to replace traditional Fieldbus networks? Ethernet technology, by itself, does not include features above the lower layers of the OSI communication model. In the past few years, it is particularly significant the considerable amount of work that has been devoted to the timing analysis of Ethernet-based technologies. It happens, however, that the majority of those works are restricted to the analysis of sub-sets of the overall computing and communication system, thus without addressing timeliness at a holistic level. To this end, we are addressing a few inter-linked research topics with the purpose of setting a framework for the development of tools suitable to extract temporal properties of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Ethernet-based factory-floor distributed systems. This framework is being applied to a specific COTS technology, Ethernet/IP. In this paper, we reason about the modelling and simulation of Ethernet/IP-based systems, and on the use of statistical analysis techniques to provide usable results. Discrete event simulation models of a distributed system can be a powerful tool for the timeliness evaluation of the overall system, but particular care must be taken with the results provided by traditional statistical analysis techniques.
