Pore-water samples from the equatorial sedimentary bulge area show reversals in depth profiles of 87Sr/86Sr ratios at the sediment/basement interface. Results of this work support inferences made from previous pore-water data (from DSDP drilling in the area) that large-scale horizontal advection of seawater has occurred through the basement underlying the thick sedimentary sequence in this region. The area of apparent advection includes the eastern part of the equatorial high-productivity zone and part of the Guatemala Basin. We attempted to find links between the observed near-basement reversals in pore-water chemistry and sedimentary thickness, age, and topography of the area. Most of the sites that show horizontal advection have disturbed basement topography or outcrops within 10 to 20 km, suggesting that the cooling effects of outcrops may extend for at least 20 km horizontally. Heat-flow data from the area were compared to determine whether sites showing near-bottom chemistry reversals were consistent with areas of low conductive heat flow. This was generally true for the area of the sedimentary bulge and Guatemala Basin. Not enough pore-water data from the Nazca Plate were available to establish any reliable systematics. Because the high-productivity area is well-sealed from hydrothermal circulation, the missing heat must be lost by horizontal advective heat transport. From profiles of strontium isotopes and other elements that show departure from seawater values with increasing depth in the sediments, but return to seawater values near the basement, it appears that water flows relatively freely through much of the oceanic crust, even when sealed by considerable sedimentary cover.

Species composition, phytoplankton abundance, and relative yield of variable fluorescence (F_v/F_m) were determined in the mesotrophic Nhatrang Bay in October-November 2004. Species diversity (250 taxonomic units) and heterogeneity of the phytoplankton structure were high. With respect to number of species and their abundance, diatoms prevailed. In selected parts of the bay, dinoflagellates dominated. Average biomass in the water column under 1 m**2 (Bt) varied from 2.3 to 64.4 mg C/m**3 (av. 31.0 mg C/m**3). Bt values were the lowest at stations nearest to the river mouth. Seaward, Bt increased. Bt values increased with depth at some stations and decreased at others. In surface layers biomass was lower than that in the underlying waters. F_v/F_m values ranged from 0.10 to 0.64 (av. 0.49). The lowest F_v/F_m values were observed in the area close to the seaport. Over greater part of the bay, F_v/F_m values were higher than 0.47. Such values are indicative of relatively high potential of photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton. Abundance and species diversity were higher than those in the dry season (March-April).

Phytoplankton of a surface strongly desalinated water lens was investigated on the basis of materials collected during Cruise 57 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in September 2007. The lens with salinity <18 psu had area of ca. 19000 sq. km and was located in the northwestern part of the Kara Sea near the eastern coast of Novaya Zemlya. It was a specific biotope that had been isolated from surrounding waters for more than three months. In the investigated area 66 algae species were identified. The maximal species diversity was found in the upper layers of the desalinated lens, where species number was 1.5 to 3 times higher than in other parts of the water column. Phytoplankton abundance in the upper layers of the lens was 1.5 to 4.5 times higher than in its lower part and generally higher than below the picnocline. Diatoms were the most abundant group in the upper layers of the lens, while flagellates dominated in the subpicnocline part of the water column. Maximal values of phytoplankton biomass were observed everywhere in the upper layers of the lens, where they were 1.2 to 3.7 times higher than in the lower part of the lens and 1.3 to 7.2 times higher than in the layer below the picnocline. Dinoflagellates generally gave the most contribution to total phytoplankton biomass. Phytoplankton of the desalinated surface lens in the northwestern part of the Kara Sea by its composition and quantitative parameters had the nearest resemblance to a phytocenosis that we observed two weeks later at a shallow desalinated shelf closely adjacent to the Ob estuary.

Originally, we had planned to piston core at Site 595 in order to meet the sedimentologic and biostratigraphic objectives outlined in the introductory chapter. However, consultation with our colleagues, Thomas Jordan and John Orcutt on board Melville, indicated that coring near the ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) array around Hole 595B could alter the programmed signal to noise ratio above which teleseisms trigger recording in the OBSs. They requested that we core no closer than about 8 km from three OBSs nearest Hole 595B, and selected a target for us about that distance to the west. Since a new beacon was required at this distance, a new site number, 596, was designated. Briefly, we planned to obtain oriented hydraulic piston cores to the top of the cherts, then core through the cherts using the extended core barrel (XCB) to basement. With improved recovery, we hoped to reach the sediment/basalt contact, and thus obtain a reliable biostratigraphic determination of the basement age. We planned to obtain at least one core in basement, perhaps more, with time permitting. We planned no geophysical program for the hole.

Mineral and chemical compositions and physical properties of diatomaceous clayey-siliceous sediments from the Sea of Okhotsk are studied. Accumulation rates of silica are determined. Their compositional model based on silica content is similar to that of Late Jurassic and Olenekian-Middle Anisian cherts from the Sikhote Alin region. Thickness of Holocene siliceous unit and accumulation rates of siliceous deposits depended on bioproductivity in the upper water layer and seafloor topography. Accumulation rates of amorphous SiO2 (0.05-5.7 g/cm**2/ka) and free SiO2 (0.5-11.6 g/cm**2/ka) are minimal on seamounts and maximal in depressions near foothills. These values match accumulation rates of free SiO2 in Triassic and Late Jurassic basins of the Sikhote Alin region (0.33-3 g/cm**2/ka). Comparison of composition and accumulation rates of silica shows that Triassic and Late Jurassic siliceous sequences of Sikhote Alin could accumulate in a marginal marine basin near a continent.

We have performed U-Th isotope analyses on pure aragonite samples from the upper sections of Leg 166 cores to assign each aragonite-rich sediment package to the correct sea-level highstand. The uppermost sediment package from each of the four sites investigated (Sites 1003, 1005, 1006, and 1007) yielded a Holocene U-Th age. Sediment packages from deeper in the cores have suffered diagenesis. This diagenesis consists of significant U loss (up to 40%) in the site nearest the platform (Site 1005), slight U gain in sites further from the platform, and continuous loss of pure 234U caused by alpha recoil at all sites. The difference in diagenesis between the sites can be explained by the different fluid-flow histories they have experienced. Site 1005 is sufficiently close to the platform to have probably experienced a change in flow direction whenever the banks have flooded or become exposed. Other sites have probably experienced continuous flow into the sediment. Although diagenesis prevents assignment of accurate ages, it is sufficiently systematic that it can be corrected for and each aragonite-rich package assigned to a unique highstand interval. Site 1005 has sediment packages from highstands associated with marine isotope Stages 1, 5, 7, 9, and 11. Site 1006 is similar, except that the Stage 7 highstand is missing, at least in Hole 1006A. Site 1003 has sediment only from Stage 1 and 11 highstands within the U-Th age range. And Site 1007 has sediment only from the stage 1 highstand. This information will allow the construction of better age models for these sites. No high-aragonite sediments are seen for Stage 3 or Substages 5a and 5c. Unless rather unusual erosion has occurred, this indicates that the banks did not flood during these periods. If true, this would require the sea level for Substages 5a and 5c to have remained at least ~10 m lower than today.

Iodine and boron were analyzed in pore fluids, serpentinized ultramafic clasts, and the serpentinized mud matrix of the South Chamorro Seamount mud volcano (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 195 Site 1200) to determine the distribution of these elements in deep forearc settings. Similar analyses of clasts and muds from the Conical Seamount mud volcano (Leg 125 Site 779) were also carried out. Interstitial pore fluids are enriched in boron and iodine without appreciable change in chloride concentration relative to seawater. Both the ultramafic clasts and the associated serpentinized mud present the highest documented iodine concentrations for all types of nonsedimentary rocks (6.3-101.7 µmol/kg). Such high iodine concentrations, if commonplace in marine forearc settings, may constitute a significant, previously unknown reservoir of iodine. This serpentinized forearc mantle reservoir may potentially contribute to the total crustal iodine budget and provide a mechanism for its recycling at convergent plate margins. Both clasts and mud show concurrent enrichments in boron and iodine, and the similarity in pore fluid profiles also suggests that these two incompatible, fluid-mobile elements behave similarly at convergent plate margins.

Stable carbon and oxygen isotopes from benthic and planktic foraminifers, planktic foraminifer assemblages and ice rafted debris from the North Atlantic Site U1314 (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 306) were examined to investigate orbital and millennial-scale climate variability in the North Atlantic and its impact on global circulation focusing on the development of glacial periods during the mid-Pleistocene (ca 800-400 ka). Glacial initiations were characterized by a rapid cooling (6-10 °C in less than 7 kyr) in the mean annual sea surface temperature (SST), increasing benthic d18O values and high benthic d13C values. The continuous increase in benthic d18O suggests a continuous ice sheet growth whereas the positive benthic d13C values indicate that the flow of the Iceland Scotland Overflow water (ISOW) was vigorous. Strong deep water formation in the Norwegian Greenland Sea promoted a high transfer of freshwater from the ocean to the continents. However, low SSTs at Site U1314 suggest a subpolar gyre cooling and freshening that may have reduced deep water formation in the Labrador Sea during glacial initiations. Once the 3.5 per mil threshold in the benthic d18O record was exceeded, ice rafting started and ice sheet growth was punctuated by millennial-scale waning events which returned to the ocean part of the freshwater accumulated on the continents. Ice-rafting events were associated with a rapid reduction in the ISOW (benthic d13C values dropped 0.5-1 per mil) and followed by millennial-scale warmings. The first two millennial-scale warm intervals of each glacial period reached interglacial temperatures and were particularly abrupt (6-10 °C in ~3 kyr). Subsequent millennial-scale warm events were cooler probably because the AMOC was rather reduced as suggested by the low benthic d13C values. These two abrupt warming events that occurred at early glacial periods were also observed in the Antarctic temperature and CO2 records, suggesting a close correlation between both Hemispheres. The comparison of the sea surface proxies with the benthic d18O record (as the Southern sign) indicates the presence of a millennial-scale seesaw pattern similar to that seen during the Last Glacial period.

Mesopelagic fish were collected using a 1 m**2 Double-MOCNESS (Multiple Opening and Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System) and 4.5 m**2 IKMT (Isaacs-Kidd midwater trawl). The main portion of the IKMT was 20 mm knotted nylon, and the tail bag was 3 mm knotless nylon. Oblique IKMT tows were made to a maximum depth of 500 m at a tow speed of 3.5 knots. The original cruise plan intended for nighttime IKMT tows, but tow times varied due to operational constraints. The MOCNESS was equipped with 20 nets of 333 µm mesh size; 10 nets per side. The towing speed was 2 knots. Samples were collected to a maximum depth of 1250 m. The first oblique nets sampled from the surface to the max depth, and the other nets sampled depth stratified bins of the water column. MOCNESS hauls were performed during day and night to investigate diel vertical migrations. Mesoplelagic fish were processed on board. All fish were picked from all IKMT nets, most oblique MOCNESS nets, and the left side nets of the depth stratified MOCNESS samples. The Depth stratified nets from the right side of the MOCNESS frame were preserved in 5 % formalin for future quantitative analyses of the nekton. Fish were identified to the lowest possible taxa using Whitehead et al. (1984) and Fahay (2007). Standard length of each fish was measured to the nearest 0.1 mm using a digital caliper. Measured and identified fish were frozen in an -80 °C freezer, and shipped to the University of Hamburg at the end of the cruise.

Basalt underlying early Campanian chalk at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 163 is divided into seven extrusive cooling units bounded by glassy margins. The margins have dips of 15° to 70°, suggestive of pillow flows rather than tabular flows. The margins are fresh sideromelane (glass) grading inward to opaque and reddish-brown globules containing microcrystalline material with radial, undulose extinction. Relative to adjacent sideromelane, the reddish-brown globules are enriched in sodium and calcium, whereas the opaque globules are depleted in these elements and enriched in iron and magnesium. It appears that basalt just inside the pillow margins has differentiated in place into globules of two distinct compositions. This globule zone grades inward to less rapidly cooled pyroxene varioles and intergrowths of plagioclase and opaque minerals. In the center of the thicker cooling units, the texture is diabasic. Alteration and calcite vein abundance are greatest at pillow margins and decrease inward; the interior of the thickest cooling unit is only slightly altered, and calcite veins are absent. Chemical analysis of whole rock by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and of sideromelane by electron microprobe, indicates that the rock is a slightly weathered tholeiite. The atomic absorption analyses, except the one nearest the top of the basalt, are relatively uniform and similar to the sideromelane microprobe analyses, including those near the top of the basalt. This suggests that deep penetration is not necessary to get through the severely altered layer at the basalt surface, and that within this altered layer, analyses of sideromelane may be more representative of crustal composition than analyses of whole rock.

The first detailed reconstruction of the continental palaeoclimate evolution of the Northwest German Tertiary (Late Oligocene to Pliocene) is presented. The paleoclimate data are derived from the paleobotanical record using the coexistence approach, a method recently introduced that employs climatic requirements of the Nearest Living Relatives of a fossil flora. Twenty six megafloras (fruits and seeds, leaves, woods) from the Tertiary succession of the Lower Rhine Basin and neighboring areas are analyzed with respect to ten meteorological parameters. Additionally, two sample sets from Late Miocene to Early Pliocene sediments comprising 396 palynofloras are analyzed by the same method providing a higher temporal resolution. The temperature curves show a comparatively cooler phase in the Late Oligocene, a warm interval the Middle Miocene, and a cooling starting at 14 Ma. The cooling trend persisted until Late Pliocene with a few higher frequency temperature variations observed. From the beginning of Late Miocene to the present, the seasonality increases and climate appears to have been less stable. As indicated by the precipitation data, a Cfa climate with wet summers persisted in NW Germany from Late Oligocene to Late Pliocene. The results obtained are well in accordance with regional and global isotope curves derived from the marine record, and allow for a refined correlation of the Tertiary succession in the Lower Rhine Basin with the international standard. It is shown that the reconstructed data are largely consistent with the continental climate record for the Northern Hemisphere, as reported by various authors. Discrepancies with previous reconstructions are discussed in detail.
