Volatility-hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer measurements were used to infer the composition of sub-100 nm diameter Southern Ocean marine aerosols at Cape Grim in November and December 2007. This study focuses on a short-lived high sea spray aerosol (SSA) event on 7–8 December with two externally mixed modes in the Hygroscopic Growth Factor (HGF) distributions (90% relative humidity (RH)), one at HGF > 2 and another at HGF~1.5. The particles with HGF > 2 displayed a deliquescent transition at 73–75% RH and were nonvolatile up to 280°C, which identified them as SSA particles with a large inorganic sea-salt fraction. SSA HGFs were 3–13% below those for pure sea-salt particles, indicating an organic volume fraction (OVF) of up to 11–46%. Observed high inorganic fractions in sub-100 nm SSA is contrary to similar, earlier studies. HGFs increased with decreasing particle diameter over the range 16–97 nm, suggesting a decreased OVF, again contrary to earlier studies. SSA comprised up to 69% of the sub-100 nm particle number, corresponding to concentrations of 110–290 cm−3. Air mass back trajectories indicate that SSA particles were produced 1500 km, 20–40 h upwind of Cape Grim. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray spectrometry measurements of sub-100 nm aerosols collected from the same location, and at the same time, displayed a distinct lack of sea salt. Results herein highlight the potential for biases in TEM analysis of the chemical composition of marine aerosols.

The development of high-quality tin monosulphide (SnS) layers is one of the crucial tasks in the fabrication of efficient SnS-based optoelectronic devices. Reduction of strain between film and the substrate by using an appropriate lattice-matched (LM) substrate is a new attempt for the growth of high-quality layers. In this view, the SnS films were deposited on LM Al substrate using the thermal evaporation technique with a low rate of evaporation. The as-grown SnS films were characterized using appropriate techniques and the obtained results are discussed by comparing them with the properties of SnS films grown on amorphous substrate under the same conditions. From structural analysis of the films, it is noticed that the SnS films deposited on amorphous substrate have crystallites that were oriented along different directions. However, the SnS crystallites grown on Al substrate exhibited epitaxial growth along the 101] direction. Photoluminescence (PL) and Raman studies reveal that the films grown on Al substrate have better optical properties than those of the films grown on amorphous substrates. Computational grids with multiple batch systems (batch grids) can be powerful infrastructures for executing long-running multi-component parallel applications. In this paper, we evaluate the potential improvements in throughput of long-running multi-component applications when the different components of the applications are executed on multiple batch systems of batch grids. We compare the multiple batch executions with executions of the components on a single batch system without increasing the number of processors used for executions. We perform our analysis with a foremost long-running multi-component application for climate modeling, the Community Climate System Model (CCSM). We have built a robust simulator that models the characteristics of both the multi-component application and the batch systems. By conducting large number of simulations with different workload characteristics and queuing policies of the systems, processor allocations to components of the application, distributions of the components to the batch systems and inter-cluster bandwidths, we show that multiple batch executions lead to 55% average increase in throughput over single batch executions for long-running CCSM. We also conducted real experiments with a practical middleware infrastructure and showed that multi-site executions lead to effective utilization of batch systems for executions of CCSM and give higher simulation throughput than single-site executions. This brief presents the capturability analysis of a 3-D Retro-proportional navigation (Retro-PN) guidance law, which uses a negative navigation constant (as against the usual positive one), for intercepting targets having higher speeds than interceptors. This modification makes it possible to achieve collision conditions that were inaccessible to the standard PN law. A modified polar coordinate system, that makes the model more compact, is used in this brief for capturability analysis. In addition to the ratio of the target to interceptor speeds, the directional cosines of the interceptor, and target velocity vectors play a crucial role in the capturability. The existence of nontrivial capture zone of the Retro-PN guidance law and necessary and sufficient conditions, for capturing the target in finite time, are presented. A sufficient condition on the navigation constant is derived to ensure finiteness of the line-of-sight turn rate. The results are more extensive than those available for 2-D engagements, which can be obtained as special cases of this brief. Simulation results are given to support the analytical results.

A set of numerical analyses for momentum and heat transfer For a 3 in. (0.075 m) diameter Liquid Encapsulant Czochralski (LEC) growth of single-crystal GaAs with or without all axial magnetic field was carried Out using the finite-element method. The analyses assume a pseudosteady axisymmetric state with laminar floats. Convective and conductive heat transfers. radiative heat transfer between diffuse surfaces and the Navier-Stokes equations for both melt and encapsulant and electric current stream function equations Cor melt and crystal Lire considered together and solved simultaneously. The effect of the thickness of encapsulant. the imposed magnetic field strength as well as the rotation rate of crystal and crucible on the flow and heat transfer were investigated. The subject of the present work is to report an experimental comparative study of the effect of dispersion-induced turbulence on dust combustion in constant volume vessel, carried out both in normal gravity and in microgravity environment. Dispersion system with small scale of turbulence, creating uniform homogeneous mixture, was used in experiments. To improve reproducibility of the explosion data an ignitor of small energy, with local soft ignition was developed. Both factors contributed to acquisition of more reproducible experimental data. In experiments under microgravity conditions a dust suspension during combustion remains constant. This makes possible to study dust explosion under stationary dust suspension without influence of turbulence.
