The title compound was prepared by base hydrolysis of (p-MeOC6H4)2SeCl2 in water and isolated as the crystalline monohydrate, (p-MeOC6H4)2SeO·H2O, in which the water molecule is associated via hydrogen-bonding. Water-free (p-MeOC6H4)2SeO was obtained crystalline after drying and recrystallisation from toluene. Both crystal phases were investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Preliminary DFT calculations at the B3LYP/LANL2DZdp level of theory suggest that the hydrogen bonded complexes R2SeO·H2O (R = H, Me, Ph) are by 2.79, 3.36 and 11.10 kcal mol-1 more stable than the corresponding elusive diorganoselenium dihydroxides R2Se(OH)2. The hydrogen bond energies of R2SeO·H2O (R = H, Me, Ph) are 5.98, 7.18 and 5.89 kcal mol-1.

A simple model was developed for the approximation of ring strain energies of homo- and heterometallic, six- and eight-membered cyclic organometallic group 14 oxides and the degree of puckering of their ring conformations. The conformational energy of a ring is modelled as the sum of its angular strain components. The bending potential energy functions for the various endocyclic M–O–M′ and O–M–O linkages (M, M′=Si, Ge, Sn) were calculated at the B3LYP/(v)TZ level of theory using H3MOM′H3 and H2M(OH)2 as model compounds. For the six-membered rings, the minimum total angular contribution to ring strain, ERSGmin was calculated to decrease in the order: cyclo-(H2SiO)3 (13.0 kJ mol−1)>cyclo-H2Sn(OSiH2)2O (7.0 kJ mol−1)>cyclo-H2Ge(OSiH2)2O (4.9 kJ mol−1)>cyclo-H2Si(OSnH2)2O (3.4 kJ mol−1)>cyclo-(H2SnO)3 (1.7 kJ mol−1)>cyclo-H2Si(OGeH2)2O (0.8 kJ mol−1)≈cyclo-H2Ge(OSnH2)2O (0.7 kJ mol−1)>cyclo-H2Sn(OGeH2)2O (0.1 kJ mol−1)≈cyclo-(H2GeO)3 (0 kJ mol−1). All of the six-membered rings were predicted to adopt (nearly) planar conformations (a=0.996<a<1). By contrast, all eight-membered rings were predicted to adopt strainless, but puckered conformations. The degree of puckering was predicted to increase in the order: cyclo-(H2SiO)4 (a=0.983)<cyclo-H2Sn(OSiH2O)2SiH2 (a=0.959)<cyclo-(H2SiO)2(H2SnO)2 (a=0.942)< cyclo-H2Si(OSnH2O)2SiH2 (a=0.935)<cyclo-(H2SnO)4 (a=0.916)<cyclo-(H2GeO)4 (a=0.885). The differences in ring strain and the degree of puckering were linked to the different electronegativities of Si, Ge and Sn. The results obtained are consistent with experimental ring strain energies; reactivities towards ring opening polymerizations or ring expansion reactions and observed ring conformations of cyclic organometallic group 14 oxides.

Numerous experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the collapse of tubular metallic crash structures under axial compression. Some simple theoretical models have been developed but these often assume one type of progressive collapse, which is not always representative of the real situation. Finite Element (FE) models, when further refined, have the potential to predict the actual collapse mode and how it influences the load-displacement and energy absorption characteristics. This paper describes an FE modelling investigation with the explicit code LS−DYNA. An automatic mesh generation programme written by the authors is used to set up shell and solid element tube models. Mesh specification issues and features relating to the contact and friction models are discussed in detail. The crush modes, load-deflection characteristics and energy absorption values found in the simulations are compared with a reasonable degree of correlation to those observed in a physical testing programme; however, improvements are still required.

Shear-banding features of as-cast and annealed Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 bulk metallic glass were investigated through Rockwell indentation tests. Isothermal annealing of the as-cast samples was conducted at temperatures below its glass transition temperature, Tg. The exothermal enthalpy during continuous heating below Tg decreases with increasing annealing temperature, indicating the gradual reduction of free-volume upon annealing. The observation on the morphology of shear-banding pattern around the indents implies a reduced shear bands activity in the annealed samples. The included angles (2θ) between two families of shear bands emanating from the edge of Rockwell indent decrease from 88° for the as-cast sample to 79° for the sample annealed at 633 K for 1 h, indicating a pressure sensitive plasticity. By Mohr–Coulomb criterion, the pressure sensitive index can be obtained on the basis of the measured 2θ, which increases with increasing annealing temperature, indicating an increase of “atomistic friction” due to the reduction of the free volume upon annealing.

Spherical indentation test was conducted on as-cast and annealed Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 bulk metallic glass, and the evolution of the morphology of the deformation zone of indents upon annealing was investigated. The DSC traces of the as-cast and annealed samples show that the enthalpy change at the glass transition, ΔH, decreases with the increasing of annealing temperature, indicating the reduction of the free volume upon annealing. The morphology of the indents implies a reduced shear band activity in the annealed samples. The included angles (2θ) between two families of shear bands emanating from the edge of spherical indent in the as-cast and the annealed samples were measured to be in the range of 88-79°, which decrease with the increasing of annealing temperature, indicating pressure sensitive plasticity in the as-cast and annealed samples. By Mohr–Coulomb criterion, the pressure sensitive index, α, can be obtained on the basis of the measured 2θ. The sensitivity index increases with increasing temperature, implying an increase of 'atomistic friction' due to the reduction of the free volume upon annealing.

Photochemical degradation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) can influence food webs by altering the availability of carbon to microbial communities, and may be particularly important following periods of high DOM input (e.g. flooding of forested floodplains). Iron oxides can facilitate these reactions, but their influence on subsequent organic products is poorly understood. Degradation experiments with billabong (= oxbow lake) water and river red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) leaf leachate were conducted to assess the importance of these reactions in floodplain systems. Photochemical degradation of DOM in sunlight-irradiated quartz tubes (with and without amorphous iron oxide) was studied using gas chromatography and UV-visible spectroscopy. Photochemical reactions generated gaseous products and small organic acids. Bioavailability of billabong DOM increased following irradiation, whereas that of leaf leachate was not significantly altered. Fluorescence excitation-emission spectra suggested that the humic component of billabong organic matter was particularly susceptible to degradation, and the source of DOM influenced the changes observed. The addition of amorphous iron oxide increased rates of photochemical degradation of leachate and billabong DOM. The importance of photochemical reactions to aquatic systems will depend on the source of the DOM and its starting bioavailability, whereas inputs of freshly formed iron oxides will accelerate the processes.

The problem of dimensional defects in aluminum die-castings is widespread throughout the foundry industry and their detection is of paramount importance in maintaining product quality. Due to the unpredictable factory environment and metallic with highly reflective nature, it is extremely hard to estimate true dimensionality of these metallic parts, autonomously. Some existing vision systems are capable of estimating depth to high accuracy, however are very much hardware dependent, involving the use of light and laser pattern projectors, integrated into vision systems or laser scanners. However, due to the reflective nature of these metallic parts and variable factory environments, the aforementioned vision systems tend to exhibit unpromising performance. Moreover, hardware dependency makes these systems cumbersome and costly. In this work, we propose a novel robust 3D reconstruction algorithm capable of reconstructing dimensionally accurate 3D depth models of the aluminum die-castings. The developed system is very simple and cost effective as it consists of only a pair of stereo cameras and a defused fluorescent light. The proposed vision system is capable of estimating surface depths within the accuracy of 0.5mm. In addition, the system is invariant to illuminative variations as well as orientation and location of the objects on the input image space, making the developed system highly robust. Due to its hardware simplicity and robustness, it can be implemented in different factory environments without a significant change in the setup. The proposed system is a major part of quality inspection system for the automotive manufacturing industry.

The reaction of the diorganotellurium oxides R2TeO (R = Ph, p-MeOC6H4, p-Me2NC6H4) with phenol and o-nitrophenol produces diorganotellurium hydroxy phenolates, R2Te(OH)OPh (1, R = Ph; 2, R = p-MeOC6H4; 3, R = p-Me2NC6H4), diorganotellurium bis(phenolates) R2Te(OPh)2 (4, R = Ph; 5, R = p-MeOC6H4; 6, R = p-Me2NC6H4), tetraorganoditelluroxane bis(o-nitrophenolates), (R′O)R2TeOTeR2(OR′) (7, R = p-MeOC6H4; 8, R = p-Me2NC6H4; R′ = o-NO2C6H4), and a hexaphenyltritelluroxane bis(o-nitrophenolate) (R′O)Ph2TeOTePh2OTePh2(OR′) (9, R′ = o-NO2C6H4), respectively. The redistribution reactions of R2Te(OPh)2 (4, R = Ph; 5, R = p-MeOC6H4; 6, R = p-Me2NC6H4) with the corresponding diorganotellurium oxides R2TeO and diorganotellurium dichlorides R2TeCl2 (R = Ph, p-MeOC6H4, p-Me2NC6H4) give rise to the formation of moisture sensitive tetraorganoditelluroxane bis(phenolates) (PhO)R2TeOTeR2(OPh) (10, R = Ph; 11, R = p-MeOC6H4; 12, R = p-Me2NC6H4) and diorganotellurium chloro phenolates, R2Te(Cl)OPh (13, R = Ph; 14, R = p-MeOC6H4; 15, R = p-Me2NC6H4), respectively. The reaction of the diorganotellurium oxides R2TeO with the corresponding diorganotellurium dichlorides R2TeCl2 (R = Ph, p-MeOC6H4, p-Me2NC6H4) affords tetraorganoditelluroxane dichlorides ClR2TeOTeR2Cl (16, R = Ph; 17, R = p-MeOC6H4; 18, R = p-Me2NC6H4) as air-stable solid materials. The reactivity of 1–18 can be rationalized by the kinetic lability of the Te–O and Te–Cl bonds. Compounds 1–18 have been characterized by solution and solid-state 125Te NMR spectroscopy and 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 17, and 18 have also been analyzed by X-ray crystallography.

Metallic glass shows some superior properties different from crystalline, but the nature of amorphous structure and structural change during glass transition have not been completely understood yet. Molecular dynamics simulation provides intuitive insight into the microstructure and properties at atomistic level. Before probing into the microstructures of metallic glass with molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, it is important to obtain amorphous state first. In the current work, we reproduce the process of manufacturing metallic glass in laboratory including the melting, equilibrating and quenching procedure with molecular dynamics simulations. The structure changing at melting point and glass transition temperature are investigated with the different cooling processing. The partial radial distribution function (PRDF) is applied as a criterion to judge the final amorphous state obtained considering the quenching at different cooling rates and the effects of cooling rate on the formation of amorphous structures are further discussed.

The conventional approach ie laboratory life testing to examine the reliability of products takes long time and involves tremendous cost as samples are tested till failures. The accelerated life test (ALT) has recently been used as an alternative method. Although ALT reduces the cost of reliability testing through applying more severe environmental conditions than the normal ones, it is no longer sufficient as it does not describe the process of products’ failure explicitly and it is still highly dependent on physical testing. Consequently, novel practices need to be developed for better understanding of the products’ reliability. A novel Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model incorporating mathematical wear equations is developed in the current work and applied to polymer materials. Wear rate, a key parameter, is calculated by using a combinatorial formula that combines a conventional linear equation with a recently published exponential equation. The local wear is firstly calculated and then integrated over the sliding distance. The FEA simulation works in a loop and performs a series of simulation with updated surface geometries. The simulation is in good agreement with the physical testing result.

We report an Mg-based metallic glass/titanium interpenetrating phase composite in which constituent phases form a homogeneously interconnected network. The porous titanium constrains shear bands propagation thoroughly and promotes shear bands branching and intersection subsequently. The homogeneous phase distribution promotes regularly distributed local shear deformation and leads to a uniform deformation for the composites. Moreover, the interpenetrating phase structure introduces a mutual-reinforcement between metallic glass and titanium. Therefore, the composite exhibits excellent mechanical performance with compressive fracture strength of 1783 MPa and fracture strain of 31%.
