The average time tau(r) for one end of a long, self-avoiding polymer to interact for the first time with a flat penetrable surface to which it is attached at the other end is shown here to scale essentially as the square of the chain's contour length N. This result is obtained within the framework of the Wilemski-Fixman approximation to diffusion-limited reactions, in which the reaction time is expressed as a time correlation function of a ``sink'' term. In the present work, this sink-sink correlation function is calculated using perturbation expansions in the excluded volume and the polymer-surface interactions, with renormalization group methods being used to resum the expansion into a power law form. The quadratic dependence of tau(r) on N mirrors the behavior of the average time tau(c) of a free random walk to cyclize, but contrasts with the cyclization time of a free self-avoiding walk (SAW), for which tau(r) similar to N-2.2. A simulation study by Cheng and Makarov J. Phys. Chem. B 114, 3321 (2010)] of the chain-end reaction time of an SAW on a flat impenetrable surface leads to the same N-2.2 behavior, which is surprising given the reduced conformational space a tethered polymer has to explore in order to react. Corona discharge is recognized as one of the mechanisms that can influence the surface hydrophobicity of Silicone Rubber (SR) because of the chemical changes that occur on its surface. In this study SR samples were exposed to positive and negative DC corona for 25 and 50 hours using a needle-plane electrode system. Hydrophobicity changes were monitored using a sessile drop contact angle measurement facility. The physical changes on the surface were studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and surface roughness measurements. The effect of positive dc corona was found to be different from that of negative dc corona. Significant surface degradation and loss of hydrophobicity was found in the case of negative dc corona exposed samples. Significant improvement in the above mentioned properties were obtained by adding small quantities of nSIL into the SR matrix.

Surface chemistry and the intrinsic porous architectures of porous substrates play a major role in the design of drug delivery systems. An interesting example is the drug elution characteristic from hydrothermally synthesised titania nanotubes with tunable surface chemistry. The variation in release rates of Ibuprofen (IBU) is largely influenced by the nature of the functional groups on titania nanotubes and pH of suspending medium. To elucidate the extent of interaction between the encapsulated IBU and the functional groups on titania nanotubes, the release profiles have been modelled with an empirical Hill equation. The analysis aided in establishing a probable mechanism for the release of IBU from the titania nanotubes. The study of controlled drug release from TiO2 has wider implication in the context of biomedical engineering. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study the effects of extended and localized potentials and a magnetic field on the Dirac electrons residing at the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator like Bi2Se3. We use a lattice model to numerically study the various states; we show how the potentials can be chosen in a way which effectively avoids the problem of fermion doubling on a lattice. We show that extended potentials of different shapes can give rise to states which propagate freely along the potential but decay exponentially away from it. For an infinitely long potential barrier, the dispersion and spin structure of these states are unusual and these can be varied continuously by changing the barrier strength. In the presence of a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the surface, these states become separated from the gapless surface states by a gap, thereby giving rise to a quasi-one-dimensional system. Similarly, a magnetic field along with a localized potential can give rise to exponentially localized states which are separated from the surface states by a gap and thereby form a zero-dimensional system. Finally, we show that a long barrier and an impurity potential can produce bound states which are localized at the impurity, and an ``L''-shaped potential can have both bound states at the corner of the L and extended states which travel along the arms of the potential. Our work opens the way to constructing wave guides for Dirac electrons.

We report the crystal structure of the first prokaryotic aspartic proteinase-like domain identified in the genome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A search in the genomes of Mycobacterium species showed that the C-terminal domains of some of the PE family proteins contain two classic DT/SG motifs of aspartic proteinases with a low overall sequence similarity to HIV proteinase. The three-dimensional structure of one of them, Rv0977 (PE_PGRS16) of M. tuberculosis revealed the characteristic pepsinf-old and catalytic site architecture. However, the active site was completely blocked by the N-terminal His-tag. Surprisingly, the enzyme was found to be inactive even after the removal of the N-terminal His-tag. A comparison of the structure with pepsins showed significant differences in the critical substrate binding residues and in the flap tyrosine conformation that could contribute to the lack of proteolytic activity of Rv0977. Porous alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures have been synthesized by a simple sol-gel route. The alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures are poorly crystalline and porous with BET surface area of 386 m(2) g(-1). The high discharge capacitance of alpha-Fe2O3 electrodes is 300 F g(-1) when the electrodes are cycled in 0.5 M Na2SO3 at a current density of 1 A g(-1). The capacitance retention after 1000 cycles is about 73% of the initial capacitance at a current density of 2 A g(-1). The high discharge capacitance of alpha-Fe2O3 in comparison with the literature reports are attributed to high surface area and porosity of the iron oxide prepared in the present study. As the iron oxides are inexpensive, the capacity of alpha-Fe2O3 is expected to be of potential use for supercapacitor application. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Shear induced crystallization in PVDF/PMMA blends, especially at higher fractions of PMMA, can be quite interesting in understanding the structure-property correlation and processing of these blends. In a recent submission (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2014, 16, 2693-2704), we clearly demonstrated, using dielectric spectroscopy, that the origin of segmental relaxations concerning the crystalline segments of PVDF in PVDF/PMMA blends in the presence of MWNTs (multiwalled nanotubes) was strongly contingent on the size of the crystallite. We now understand that the fraction of PMMA in the blends governs the origin of polymorphism in PVDF. This motivated us to systematically study the effect of shear on the crystallization behavior of PVDF especially in blends with different polymorphic forms of PVDF. Two model blends were selected; one with a mixture of alpha and beta crystals and the other predominantly rich in alpha crystals. Initially, physical ageing, at different oscillation frequencies (1 rad s(-1) and 0.1 rad s(-1)), was monitored by melt rheology and subsequently, the effect of steady shear was probed in situ without changing the history of the samples. Intriguingly, the rate of crystallization was observed to be significantly higher for higher oscillation frequencies, which essentially suggest that shear has induced crystallization in the blends. More interestingly, the effect of steady shear was more pronounced in the blends rich in alpha crystals (bigger crystallites as observed from SAXS) and at lower oscillation frequencies.

In response to the Indian Monsoon freshwater forcing, the Bay of Bengal exhibits a very strong seasonal cycle in sea surface salinity (SSS), especially near the mouths of the Ganges-Brahmaputra and along the east coast of India. In this paper, we use an eddy-permitting (similar to 25 km resolution) regional ocean general circulation model simulation to quantify the processes responsible for this SSS seasonal cycle. Despite the absence of relaxation toward observations, the model reproduces the main features of the observed SSS seasonal cycle, with freshest water in the northeastern Bay, particularly during and after the monsoon. The model also displays an intense and shallow freshening signal in a narrow (similar to 100 km wide) strip that hugs the east coast of India, from September to January, in good agreement with high-resolution measurements along two ships of opportunity lines. The mixed layer salt budget confirms that the strong freshening in the northern Bay during the monsoon results from the Ganges-Brahmaputra river discharge and from precipitation over the ocean. From September onward, the East India Coastal Current transports this freshwater southward along the east coast of India, reaching the southern tip of India in November. The surface freshening results in an enhanced vertical salinity gradient that increases salinity of the surface layer by vertical processes. Our results reveal that the erosion of the freshwater tongue along the east coast of India is not driven by northward horizontal advection, but by vertical processes that eventually overcome the freshening by southward advection and restore SSS to its premonsoon values. The salinity-stratified barrier layer hence only acts as a ``barrier'' for vertical heat fluxes, but is associated with intense vertical salt fluxes in the Bay of Bengal.

The anti-icing properties of hydrophilic, hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces/coatings were evaluated using a custom-built apparatus based on zero-degree cone test method. The ice-adhesion reduction factor (ARF) of these coatings has been evaluated using bare aluminium alloy as a reference. The wettability of the surfaces was evaluated by measuring water contact angle (WCA) and sliding angle. It was found that the ice-adhesion strength (tau) on silicone based hydrophobic surfaces was similar to 43 times lower than compared to bare polished aluminium alloy indicating excellent anti-icing property of these coatings. Superhydrophobic coatings displayed poor anti-icing property in spite of their high water repellence. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope reveal that Silicone based hydrophobic coatings exhibited smooth surface whereas the superhydrophobic coatings had a rough surface consisting of microscale bumps and protrusions superimposed with nanospheres. Both surface roughness and surface energy play a major role on the ice-adhesion strength of the coatings. The 3D surface roughness profiles of the coatings also indicated the same trend of roughness. An attempt is made to correlate the observed ice-adhesion strength of different surfaces with their wettability and surface roughness. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In Incompressible Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (ISPH), a pressure Poisson equation (PPE) is solved to obtain a divergence free velocity field. When free surfaces are simulated using this method a Dirichlet boundary condition for pressure at the free surface has to be applied. In existing ISPH methods this is achieved by identifying free surface particles using heuristically chosen threshold of a parameter such as kernel sum, density or divergence of the position, and explicitly setting their pressure values. This often leads to clumping of particles near the free surface and spraying off of surface particles during splashes. Moreover, surface pressure gradients in flows where surface tension is important are not captured well using this approach. We propose a more accurate semi-analytical approach to impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on the free surface. We show the efficacy of the proposed algorithm by using test cases of elongation of a droplet and dam break. We perform two dimensional simulations of water entry and validate the proposed algorithm with experimental results. Further, a three dimensional simulation of droplet splash is shown to compare well with the Volume-of-Fluid simulations. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The structural relaxations in PVDF rich blends with PMMA can be quite interesting in understanding the origin of the different molecular relaxations associated with the crystalline and amorphous phases, crystal-amorphous interphase and the segmental motions. In light of our recent findings, we understood that the origin of these molecular relaxations were strongly contingent on the concentration of PMMA in the blend, crystalline morphology and the surface functional moieties on multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In addition, for the blends with concentration of PMMA >= 25 wt%, the structural relaxations often merge and are dielectrically indistinguishable. In this study, we attempted to determine the critical width in composition where the structural relaxations can be distinctly realized both in the control as well as blends with amine functionalized CNTs (NH2-CNTs). Intriguingly, we observed that in a narrow zone in composition (with PMMA concentration >= 10 wt% and <= 25 wt%), the molecular relaxations can be dielectrically distinguished and they often merge for all other compositions. Furthermore, we attempted to understand how this critical width in composition is related to the crystalline morphology using small angle X-ray scattering and polarizing optical microscopy and the crystal structure using FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. We now understand that although the formation of beta crystals in the blends has no direct correlation with the observed molecular relaxations, the amorphous miscibility and the interphase regions seem to be dictating the origin of different molecular relaxations in the blends. The latter was observed to be strongly contingent on the concentration of PMMA in the blends.

The protein folding funnel paradigm suggests that folding and unfolding proceed as directed diffusion in a multidimensional free energy surface where a multitude of pathways can be traversed during the protein's sojourn from initial to final state. However, finding even a single pathway, with the detail chronicling of intermediates, is an arduous task. In this work we explore the free energy surface of unfolding pathway through umbrella sampling, for a small globular a-helical protein chicken-villin headpiece (HP-36) when the melting of secondary structures is induced by adding DMSO in aqueous solution. We find that the unfolding proceeds through the initial separation or melting of aggregated hydrophobic core that comprises of three phenylalanine residues (Phe7, Phe11, and Phe18). This separation is accompanied by simultaneous melting of the second helix. Unfolding is found to be a multistage process involving crossing of three consecutive minima and two barriers at the initial stage. At a molecular level, Phe18 is observed to reorient itself towards other hydrophobic grooves to stabilize the intermediate states. We identify the configuration of the intermediates and correlate the intermediates with those obtained in our previous works. We also give an estimate of the barriers for different transition states and observe the softening of the barriers with increasing DMSO concentration. We show that higher concentration of DMSO tunes the unfolding pathway by destabilizing the third minimum and stabilizing the second one, indicating the development of a solvent modified, less rugged pathway. The prime outcome of this work is the demonstration that mixed solvents can profoundly transform the nature of the energy landscape and induce unfolding via a modified route. A successful application of Kramer's rate equation correlating the free energy simulation results shows faster rate of unfolding with increasing DMSO concentration. This work perhaps presents the first systematic theoretical study of the effect of a chemical denaturant on the microscopic free energy surface and rates of unfolding of HP-36. When dropped, electronic packages often undergo failure by propagation of an interfacial crack in solder joints under a combination of tensile and shear loading. Hence, it is crucial to understand and predict the fracture behavior of solder joints under mixed-mode high-rate loading conditions. In this work, the effects of the loading conditions (strain rate and loading angle) and microstructure interfacial intermetallic compound (IMC) morphology and solder yield strength] on the mixed-mode fracture toughness of Sn-3.8 wt.%Ag-0.7 wt.%Cu solder joints sandwiched between two Cu substrates with electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG) metallization have been studied, and compared with the fracture behavior of joints attached to bare Cu. Irrespective of the surface finish, the fracture toughness of the solder joints decreased monotonically with strain rate and mode-mixity, both resulting in increased fracture proportion through the interfacial IMC layer. Furthermore, the proportion of crack propagation through the interfacial IMC layer increased with increase in the thickness and the roughness of the interfacial IMC layer and the yield strength of the solder, resulting in a decrease in the fracture toughness of the joint. However, under most conditions, solder joints with ENIG finish showed higher resistance to fracture than joints attached directly to Cu substrates without ENIG metallization. Based on the experimental observations, a fracture mechanism map is constructed correlating the yield strength of the solder, the morphology and thickness of the interfacial IMC, and the fracture mechanisms as well as the fracture toughness values for different solder joints under mode I loading.

Textured silicon (Si) substrate were prepared using various texturing methods both chemical and physical and their water contact angle, surface topography and Raman spectra were studied and investigated. The effect of plasma and chemical treatment on micro/nanostructure and roughness of the surface with and without deposition of Octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS, Cl3Si (CH3)(17)), self-assembled monolayer (SAM) is investigated for achieving higher water contact angle (theta(c)). The importance of synergism of texturing with deposition of ODTS SAM in preparing superhydrophobic silicon surfaces has been discussed. It is shown that superhydrophobic silicon surfaces can be achieved on silicon surfaces by coating with ODTS, irrespective of whether it is textured or not, polished or unpolished, provided a chemical treatment is given to the surface prior to the ODTS coating.
