Royal Navy Ship Collection, 1784-1816

Includes 41 copies of plans of Royal Navy ships, ranging in date from 1784 to 1816. Some of the ships included are the Bonne Citoyenne, Niagara, Epervier, Comet, Contest, Ferret, Childers, Anacreon, Florida, Hind, Hermes, Psyche, Princess Charlotte, Contest, Prince Regent, Caroline, Thetis, Statira, Forte, Pelican, Crescent, Euryalus, Chesapeake, Acasta, Banterer, Leda, Endymion, Amphion, President, Tonnant, Ramillies, Boyne, and St. Lawrence. Many of these ships were used by the British during the War of 1812. The original plans are at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. Also included is a copy of a handwritten chart with the number and size of the British and United States Squadrons on Lake Ontario, March 1814 (during the War of 1812). This includes the number and caliber of long guns and carronades, as well as the weight of metal, for different ships. British ships include the Prince Regent, Princess Charlotte, Wolfe, Royal George, Melville, Moira, Sir Sidney Smith, and Beresford. American ships include the [General] Pike, Madison, Oneida, Sylph, Gen���l Tompkins[?], Conquest, Fair American, Ontario, Pert, Asp, and Lady of the Lake. Also included is a copy of a map titled ���Track of the Action���, tracking the movements of the HMS Java and the USS Constitution, dated December 29, 1812, and a copy of a map of Lake Champlain and Plattsburgh Bay showing the position of a vessel(s), undated.

St. Catharines documents including mortgages, wills and declarations, 1871-1914 (not inclusive)

Most of these documents refer to a tract of land located on the intersection of King and Court Streets (part of the Lawrie plan) and Carter properties in St. Catharines Ontario. The Security Loan and Savings Company of St. Catharines existed between 1870 and 1906. Thomas Rodman Merritt was the president.

National Intelligencer, 10 November 1812 (vol. 13, no. 1895) - Newspaper

The Intelligencer was an American newspaper that was established in Washington by Samuel Harrison Smith, a young Jeffersonian-Republican from Philadelphia. The paper was a supporter of the Jefferson and Madison administrations until 1810 when it was sold to Joseph Gales Jr. from North Carolina. In 1812 William Seaton joined Gales as a publishing partner. The paper made significant contributions to the nation and wielded considerable influence in political circles during its publication

Columbian Centinel, 22 February 1815 (no. 3222) - Newspaper

Volumes of interest were published between 1812 and 1815 with articles about the War of 1812. Issue for February 22, 1815: includes various articles about the War of 1812 and the end of the war including "British official account--Battle of Chippewa", Page 2 has a bold, two-column wide heading: "Ratified TREATY Of PEACE And AMITY", followed by "A PROCLAMATION" issued by "JAMES MADISON" stating that a treaty with "His Britannic Majesty" was signed at Ghent on December 24, 1814, and ratified by the U.S. Senate on February 17, 1815, thus ending the War of 1812.

The Independent Chronicle, 22 October 1812 (no. 3280) - Newspaper

Volumes of interest were published between 1812 and 1815 with articles about the War of 1812. Issue for Oct. 22, 1812 includes a Proclamation issued by the President of the United States offering a full pardon to ...a number of individuals who have deserted from the Army... signed in type: James Madison. Has three other acts each signed in type by Madison. Some minor war reports on pg. 2.

Thomas's Massachusetts spy, or, Worcester Gazette, 1 March 1815 (vol. 44, no. 2186) - Newspaper

Volumes of interest were published between 1812 and 1815 with articles about the War of 1812. Issue for Mar. 1, 1815: The front page of this issue has the: "TREATY Of Peace And Amity, Between his Britannick Majesty and the United States of America." Hereafter, and concluding on pg. 2, are the eleven articles of the treaty, signed in type: John Q. Adams, James A. Bayard, Henry Clay, Albert Gallatin, and several others. Page 2 also has the message from the President that he forwarded a copy of the treaty to Congress, signed in type: James Madison.

Weekly Aurora, 21 February 1815 (vol. 5, no. 49) - Newspaper

Volumes of interest were published between 1812 and 1815 with articles about the War of 1812. Issue for Feb. 21, 1815, beginning on page 2 and continuing to take all of page 3 and some of page 4 is the full text headed: "TREATY OF PEACE" which is prefaced with an address by James Madison. Also in this issue is an article: "Victory At Orleans" and another article headed: "The War--From New Orleans".

Boston Gazette, 13 December 1813 (vol. 39, no. 50) - Newspaper

Volumes of interest were published between 1812 and 1815 with articles about the War of 1812. Issue for Dec. 13, 1813: much of the front page & a portion of page 2 are taken up with the "President's Message" which is signed by him in type at its conclusion: James Madison. Obviously much of the focus of his speech is with the on-going War of 1812 including mention of some significant battles such as Lake Erie, etc.

Message from the President of the United States transmitting documents relative to the execution of the first article of the late treaty between the United States and Great Britain.

"February 7, 1817, ordered to be printed for the use of the Senate." Message addressed to the Senate and dated February 7th, 1817. Consists of the covering letter from the President and a report from the Secretary of State, dated Department of State, February 5th, 1817; which itself consists largely of diplomatic correspondence between the United States and Great Britain Relates to the restitution of captured slaves by the British during the War of 1812-1814.

Message from the President of the United States, Recommending an Immediate Declaration of War Against Great Britain (1812)

"June 1st, 1812. Referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations. June 3d, 1812. Bill reported, declaring war ..."

[British Parliamentary papers], Session 24 November, 1812 - 22 July, 1813. Vol. XIV, Correspondence and treaties with foreign powers.

Most of this volume consists of correspondence between high ranking U.S. and British statesmen. E.g., James Madison, James Monroe, The Marquess Wellesley (brother of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington). The discussion centers around the War of 1812. Also includes facsimilies of treaties signed between Great Britain and Sweden, Russia and Sicily.

James Monroe letter of marque, ca. 1812

James Monroe (1758-1831) was appointed Secretary of State by President James Madison in 1811. He remained in this position until March, 1817, with the exception of the period from October 1, 1814, to February 28, 1815, when he was ad interim Secretary of State. Monroe encouraged President James Madison and Congress to declare war on Great Britain, feeling it would be the most effective way to change offensive British policies. The United States declared war on June 17, 1812, after which he served as Secretary of War. Monroe later became President of the United States from 1817 until 1824.
