An innovative background modeling technique that is able to accurately segment foreground regions in RGB-D imagery (RGB plus depth) has been presented in this paper. The technique is based on a Bayesian framework that efficiently fuses different sources of information to segment the foreground. In particular, the final segmentation is obtained by considering a prediction of the foreground regions, carried out by a novel Bayesian Network with a depth-based dynamic model, and, by considering two independent depth and color-based mixture of Gaussians background models. The efficient Bayesian combination of all these data reduces the noise and uncertainties introduced by the color and depth features and the corresponding models. As a result, more compact segmentations, and refined foreground object silhouettes are obtained. Experimental results with different databases suggest that the proposed technique outperforms existing state-of-the-art algorithms.

The building sector has experienced a significant decline in recent years in Spain and Europe as a result of the financial crisis that began in 2007. This drop accompanies a low penetration of information and communication technologies in inter-organizational oriented business processes. The market decrease is causing a slowdown in the building sector, where only flexible small and medium enterprises (SMEs) survive thanks to specialization and innovation in services, which allow them to face new market demands. Inter-organizational information systems (IOISs) support innovation in services, and are thus a strategic tool for SMEs to obtain competitive advantage. Because of the inherent complexity of IOIS adoption, this research extends Kurnia and Johnston's (2000) theoretical model of IOIS adoption with an empirical model of IOIS characterization. The resultant model identifies the factors influencing IOIS adoption in SMEs in the building sector, to promote further service innovation for competitive and collaborative advantages. An empirical longitudinal study over six consecutive years using data from Spanish SMEs in the building sector validates the model, using the partial least squares technique and analyzing temporal stability. The main findings of this research are the four ways an IOIS might contribute to service innovation in the building sector. Namely: a) improving client interfaces and the link between service providers and end users; b) defining a specific market where SMEs can develop new service concepts; c) enhancing the service delivery system in traditional customer?supplier relationships; and d) introducing information and communication technologies and tools to improve information management.

O pensamento de Comenius tem sido revisitado por meio de alguns pesquisadores comenianos, preocupados em demonstrá-lo Comenius como pedagogo, sendo esta uma das razões pelas quais é conhecido como o Pai da pedagogia moderna . Por outro lado, há algumas poucas pesquisas que apontam Comenius como teólogo, enfantizando que ele não foi apenas um pedagogo, mas sua atividade principal era a teologia. Partindo desta constatação, esta pesquisa objetivou demonstrar que só se pode compreender o conceito de educação de Comenius, tendo como pressuposto fundamental a inter-relação da teologia e da pedagogia, entre as quais Comenius não faz distinção. É somente com este pressuposto que se compreende o motivo pelo qual Comenius destacou a educação como a salvação ou o remédio divino para a cura da corrupção do gênero humano, haja vista que ela tem como finalidade última regenerar e fazer de cada homem um paraíso de delícias para o Criador. O melhor caminho, a ser percorrido para a concretização de tal busca, deve ser sistematizado pela pedagogia.(AU)

Este trabalho faz uma leitura do fenômeno da crescente migração de membros no interior do pentecostalismo, na perspectiva da modernidade, demonstrando, através de fundamentação teórica e de pesquisa de campo, quais as relações existentes entre aquele fenômeno e as transformações sociais que caracterizam o mundo moderno. Assim, o primeiro capítulo discute as transformações que ocorrem no campo religioso com o surgimento do mundo moderno, especialmente a secularização, a partir do século XVI, na Europa, e a globalização, fenômeno mais recente, e analisa a situação específica da modernidade latino-americana e das relações próprias entre esta e a religião que nela se produz. O segundo capítulo caracteriza o pentecostalismo e analisa sua correspondência à modernidade tal como ela se manifesta na América Latina. No terceiro capítulo, são discutidas várias abordagens interpretativas do fenômeno da migração inter-religiosa ou trânsito religioso e são apresentados analiticamente os resultados da pesquisa de campo feita pelo autor entre pentecostais no município de São Bernardo do Campo, SP, demonstrando como eles evidenciam a existência de relações intrínsecas entre o fenômeno estudado e a modernidade.Dessa maneira, mostra-se como a religião, reconfigurando-se, seja por adaptação à modernidade, seja por reação a ela, coloca-se não somente como fruto, mas também como fator de modernidade.(AU)

The brain cholecystokinin-B/gastrin receptor (CCK-BR) is a major target for drug development because of its postulated role in modulating anxiety, memory, and the perception of pain. Drug discovery efforts have resulted in the identification of small synthetic molecules that can selectively activate this receptor subtype. These drugs include the peptide-derived compound PD135,158 as well as the nonpeptide benzodiazepine-based ligand, L-740,093 (S enantiomer). We now report that the maximal level of receptor-mediated second messenger signaling that can be achieved by these compounds (drug efficacy) markedly differs among species homologs of the CCK-BR. Further analysis reveals that the observed differences in drug efficacy are in large part explained by single or double aliphatic amino acid substitutions between respective species homologs. This interspecies variability in ligand efficacy introduces the possibility of species differences in receptor-mediated function, an important consideration when selecting animal models for preclinical drug testing. The finding that even single amino acid substitutions can significantly affect drug efficacy prompted us to examine ligand-induced signaling by a known naturally occurring human CCK-BR variant (glutamic acid replaced by lysine in position 288; 288E → K). When examined using the 288E → K receptor, the efficacies of both PD135,158 and L-740,093 (S) were markedly increased compared with values obtained with the wild-type human protein. These observations suggest that functional variability resulting from human receptor polymorphisms may contribute to interindividual differences in drug effects.

The ultra-long telomeres that have been observed in mice are not in accordance with the concept that critical telomere shortening is related to aging and immortalization. Here, we have used quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization to estimate (T2AG3)n lengths of individual telomeres in various mouse strains. Telomere lengths were very heterogeneous, but specific chromosomes of bone marrow cells and skin fibroblasts from individual mice had similar telomere lengths. We estimate that the shortest telomeres are around 10 kb in length, indicating that each mouse cell has a few telomeres with (T2AG3)n lengths within the range of human telomeres. These short telomeres may be critical in limiting the replicative potential of murine cells.

Self-incompatibility in Brassica is controlled by a single multi-allelic locus (S locus), which contains at least two highly polymorphic genes expressed in the stigma: an S glycoprotein gene (SLG) and an S receptor kinase gene (SRK). The putative ligand-binding domain of SRK exhibits high homology to the secretory protein SLG, and it is believed that SLG and SRK form an active receptor kinase complex with a self-pollen ligand, which leads to the rejection of self-pollen. Here, we report 31 novel SLG sequences of Brassica oleracea and Brassica campestris. Sequence comparisons of a large number of SLG alleles and SLG-related genes revealed the following points. (i) The striking sequence similarity observed in an inter-specific comparison (95.6% identity between SLG14 of B. oleracea and SLG25 of B. campestris in deduced amino acid sequence) suggests that SLG diversification predates speciation. (ii) A perfect match of the sequences in hypervariable regions, which are thought to determine S specificity in an intra-specific comparison (SLG8 and SLG46 of B. campestris) and the observation that the hypervariable regions of SLG and SRK of the same S haplotype were not necessarily highly similar suggests that SLG and SRK bind different sites of the pollen ligand and that they together determine S specificity. (iii) Comparison of the hypervariable regions of SLG alleles suggests that intragenic recombination, together with point mutations, has contributed to the generation of the high level of sequence variation in SLG alleles. Models for the evolution of SLG/SRK are presented.

DNA fragments with stretches of cytosine residues can fold into four-stranded structures in which two parallel duplexes, held together by hemiprotonated cytosine.cytosine+ (C.C+) base pairs, intercalate into each other with opposite polarity. The structural details of this intercalated DNA quadruplex have been assessed by solution NMR and single crystal x-ray diffraction studies of cytosine-rich sequences, including those present in metazoan telomeres. A conserved feature of these structures is the absence of stabilizing stacking interactions between the aromatic ring systems of adjacent C.C+ base pairs from intercalated duplexes. Effective stacking involves only the exocyclic keto groups and amino groups of the cytidine bases. The apparent absence of stability provided by stacking interactions between the bases in this intercalated DNA has prompted us to examine the available structures in detail, in particular with regard to unusual features that could compensate for the lack of base stacking. In addition to base-on-deoxyribose stacking and intra-cytidine C-H...O hydrogen bonds, this analysis reveals the presence of a hitherto unobserved, systematic intermolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonding network between the deoxyribose sugar moieties of antiparallel backbones in the four-stranded molecule.

In prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms, the electrophoretic variation in housekeeping enzymes from natural populations is assumed to have arisen by the accumulation of stochastic predominantly neutral mutations. In the naturally transformable bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, we show that variation in the electrophoretic mobility of adenylate kinase is due to inter- and intraspecies recombination rather than mutation. The nucleotide sequences of the adenylate kinase gene (adk) from isolates that express the predominant slow electrophoretic variant were rather uniform, differing in sequence at an average of 1.1% of nucleotide sites. The adk sequences of rare isolates expressing the fast migrating variant were identical to each other but had a striking mosaic structure when compared to the adk genes from strains expressing the predominant variant. Thus the sequence from the fast variants was identical to those of typical slow variants in the first 158 bp of the gene but differed by 8.4% in the rest of the gene (nt 159-636). The fast electrophoretic variant appears to have arisen by the replacement of most of the meningococcal gene with the corresponding region from the adk gene of a closely related Neisseria species. The adk genes expressing the electrophoretic variant with intermediate mobility were perfect, or almost perfect, recombinants between the adk genes expressing the fast and slow variants. Recombination may, therefore, play a major role in the generation of electrophoretically detectable variation in housekeeping enzymes of some bacterial species.
