This paper presents a new method for calculating the individual generators’ shares in line flows, line losses and loads. The method is described and illustrated on active power flows, but it can be applied in the same way to reactive power flows. Starting from a power flow solution, the line flow matrix is formed. This matrix is used for identifying node types, tracing the power flow from generators downstream to loads, and to determine generators’ participation factors to lines and loads. Neither exhaustive search nor matrix inversion is required. Hence, the method is claimed to be the least computationally demanding amongst all of the similar methods.

Enantiopure trans-dihydrodiols have been obtained by a chemoenzymatic synthesis from the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol metabolites, obtained by dioxygenase-catalysed arene cis-dihydroxylation at the 2,3-bond of monosubstituted benzene substrates. This generally applicable, seven-step synthetic route to trans-dihydrodiols involves a regioselective hydrogenation and a Mitsunobu inversion of configuration at C-2, followed by benzylic bromination and dehydrobromination steps. The method has also been extended to the synthesis of both enantiomers of the trans-dihydrodiol derivatives of toluene, through substitution of a vinyl bromine atom of the corresponding trans-dihydrodiol enantiomers derived from bromobenzene. Through incorporation of hydrogenolysis and diMTPA ester diastereoisomer resolution steps into the synthetic route, both trans-dihydrodiol enantiomers of monohalobenzenes were obtained from the cis-dihydrodiols of 4-haloiodobenzenes.

Toluene- and naphthalene-dioxygenase-catalysed oxidation of six bicyclic disulfide substrates, using whole cells of Pseudomonas putida, gave the corresponding monosulfoxides with high ee values and enantiocomplementarity, in most cases. Two alcohol-sulfoxide diastereoisomers, formed from the reaction of the (R)-1,3-benzodithiole-1-oxide metabolite with n-butyllithium and benzaldehyde, were separated and stereochemically assigned. Treatment, of enantiopure (1R,3R)-benzo-1,3-dithiole-1,3-dioxide, obtained by chemoenzymatic synthesis, with alkyllithium reagents, resulted in a novel ring-opening reaction which proceeded with inversion of configuration to yield a series of acyclic disulfoxides. Several potential approaches to the enzyme-catalysed synthesis of arene trans-diols have been examined including epoxidation/hydrolysis, bis-benzylic hydroxylation, cis-dihydroxylation/alcohol dehydrogenation/ketone reduction, cisdihydroxylation/cis-trans isomerisation. and multi-enzyme synthesis of trans-dihydrodiol secondary metabolites from primary metabolites. The lack of general applicability of these enzymatic methods has led to the development of several chemoenzymatic routes for the synthesis of a series of trans-dihydrodiols from the readily available cis-dihydrodiol precursors. Partial hydrogenation of cis-dihydrodiol metabolites to yield the corresponding cis-tetrahydrodiols followed by a regioselective Mitsunobu inversion process gave trans-tetrahydrodiols that were in turn converted to trans-dihydrodiols. The formation of anti-benzene dioxides or iron tricarbonyl complexes from the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol precursors provided shorter and more convenient chemoenzymatic routes to trans-dihydrodiols. The application of cis-dihydrodiol metabolites of polycyclic azaarenes in the synthesis of the corresponding arene oxides followed by chemical hydrolysis provides a convenient route to trans-dihydrodiols. It is well known that magnetic activity in late-type stars increases with increasing rotation rate. Using inversion techniques akin to medical imaging, the rotationally broadened profiles from such stars can be used to reconstruct `Doppler images' of the distribution of cool, dark starspots on their stellar surfaces. Interacting binaries, however, contain some of the most rapidly rotating late-type stars known and thus provide important tests of stellar dynamo models. Furthermore, magnetic activity is thought to play a key role in their evolution, behaviour and accretion dynamics. Despite this, we know comparatively little about the magnetic activity and its influence on such binaries. In this review we summarise the concepts behind indirect imaging of these systems, and present movies of the starspot distributions on the cool stars in some interacting binaries. We conclude with a look at the future opportunities that such studies may provide.

High-cadence, multiwavelength optical observations of a solar active region (NOAA AR 10969), obtained with the Swedish Solar Telescope, are presented. Difference imaging of white light continuum data reveals a white-light brightening, 2 minutes in duration, linked to a cotemporal and cospatial C2.0 flare event. The flare kernel observed in the white-light images has a diameter of 300 km, thus rendering it below the resolution limit of most space-based telescopes. Continuum emission is present only during the impulsive stage of the flare, with the effects of chromospheric emission subsequently delayed by approximate to 2 minutes. The localized flare emission peaks at 300% above the quiescent flux. This large, yet tightly confined, increase in emission is only resolvable due to the high spatial resolution of the Swedish Solar Telescope. An investigation of the line-of-sight magnetic field derived from simultaneous MDI data shows that the continuum brightening is located very close to a magnetic polarity inversion line. In addition, an Ha flare ribbon is directed along a region of rapid magnetic energy change, with the footpoints of the ribbon remaining cospatial with the observed white-light brightening throughout the duration of the flare. The observed flare parameters are compared with current observations and theoretical models for M- and X-class events and we determine the observed white-light emission is caused by radiative back-warming. We suggest that the creation of white-light emission is a common feature of all solar flares.

Intramolecular Heck cyclisation of (E)-vinyl bromides leads to indolizidines, related to pumiliotoxin alkaloids, in which the stereochemistry of the trisubstituted double bond undergoes inversion. A cyclopropyl intermediate, which is believed to be responsible for the double bond inversion, has been intercepted by forcing an 'early' beta-hydride elimination on this species. The relative stereochemistry of this cyclopropyl intermediate determines the regioselectivity of the final beta-hydride elimination. In this case all three beta-hydride eliminations were stereochemically permitted, giving rise to a mixture of three isomeric products, differing in the position of a double bond. (Z)-Vinyl bromides were found to be less reactive than (E)-vinyl bromides, but on cyclisation gave the required conjugated diene, with inversion of the vinyl bromide stereochemistry, as the sole reaction product. This methodology will allow rapid stereoselective access to the diene-based pumiliotoxin alkaloids.

Naturally occurring boundaries between bundles of 90o stripe domains, which form in BaTiO3 lamellae on cooling through the Curie Temperature, have been characterised using both piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Detailed interpretation of the dipole configurations present at these boundaries (using data taken from PFM) shows that, in the vast majority of cases, they are composed of simple zigzag 180° domain walls. Topological information from STEM shows that, occasionally, domain bundle boundaries can support chains of dipole flux closure and quadrupole nanostructures, but these kinds of boundaries are comparatively rare; when such chains do exist, it is notable that singularities at the cores of the dipole structures are avoided. The symmetry of the boundary shows that diads and centres of inversion exist at positions where core singularities should have been expected.

We present an occultation of the newly discovered hot Jupiter system WASP-19, observed with the High Acuity Wide-field K-band Imager instrument on the VLT, in order to measure thermal emission from the planet's dayside at ~2µm. The light curve was analysed using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to find the eclipse depth and the central transit time. The transit depth was found to be 0.366 +/- 0.072 per cent, corresponding to a brightness temperature of 2540 +/- 180 K. This is significantly higher than the calculated (zero-albedo) equilibrium temperature and indicates that the planet shows poor redistribution of heat to the night side, consistent with models of highly irradiated planets. Further observations are needed to confirm the existence of a temperature inversion and possibly molecular emission lines. The central eclipse time was found to be consistent with a circular orbit.

The objective of this paper is to describe and evaluate the application of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines to a corpus of oral French, this being the first corpus of oral French where the TEI has been used. The paper explains the purpose of the corpus, both in creating a specialist corpus of néo-contage that will broaden the range of oral corpora available, and, more importantly, in creating a dataset to explore a variety of oral French that has a particularly interesting status in terms of factors such as conception orale/écrite, réalisation médiale and comportement communicatif (Koch and Oesterreicher 2001). The linguistic phenomena to be encoded are both stylistic (speech and thought presentation) and syntactic (negation, detachment, inversion), and all represent areas where previous research has highlighted the significance of factors such as medium, register and discourse type, as well as a host of linguistic factors (syntactic, phonetic, lexical). After a discussion of how a tagset can be designed and applied within the TEI to encode speech and thought presentation, negation, detachment and inversion, the final section of the paper evaluates the benefits and possible drawbacks of the methodology offered by the TEI when applied to a syntactic and stylistic markup of an oral corpus.

Positron annihilation in ammonia is analyzed using the framework of resonant annihilation [G. F. Gribakin and C. M. R. Lee, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 193201 (2006)]. In particular, we show that molecular rotations can have a measurable e?ect on the annihilation rates at room temperatures. Rotation leads to broadening of vibrational Feshbach resonances. Rotations also allow a distinct contribution at low positron energies in the form of a rotational Feshbach resonance. This resonance can enhance the annihilation rate for thermalized room-temperature positrons. Comparison of theory and experiment shows that overtone and combination vibrations, including those due to inversion doubling, likely play an important role.

This paper explores how the surface permeability of sandstone blocks changes over time in response to repeated salt weathering cycles. Surface permeability controls the amount of moisture and dissolved salt that can penetrate in and facilitate decay. Connected pores permit the movement of moisture (and hence soluble salts) into the stone interior, and where areas are more or less permeable soluble salts may migrate along preferred pathways at differential rates. Previous research has shown that salts can accumulate in the near-surface zone and lead to partial pore blocking which influences subsequent moisture ingress and causes rapid salt accumulation in the near-surface zone.

Two parallel salt weathering simulations were carried out on blocks of Peakmoor Sandstone of different volumes. Blocks were removed from simulations after 2, 5, 10, 20 and 60 cycles. Permeability measurements were taken for these blocks at a resolution of 20 mm, providing a grid of 100 permeability values for each surface. The geostatistical technique of ordinary kriging was applied to the data to produce a smoothed interpolation of permeability for these surfaces, and hence improve understanding of the evolution of permeability over time in response to repeated salt weathering cycles.

Results illustrate the different responses of the sandstone blocks of different volumes to repeated salt weathering cycles. In both cases, after an initial subtle decline in the permeability (reflecting pore blocking), the permeability starts to increase — reflected in a rise in mean, maximum and minimum values. However, between 10 and 20 cycles, there is a jump in the mean and range permeability of the group A block surfaces coinciding with the onset of meaningful debris release. After 60 cycles, the range of permeability in the group A block surface had increased markedly, suggesting the development of a secondary permeability. The concept of dynamic instability and divergent behaviour is applied at the scale of a single block surface, with initial small-scale differences across a surface having larger scale consequences as weathering progresses.

After cycle 10, group B blocks show a much smaller increase in mean permeability, and the range stays relatively steady — this may be explained by the capillary conditions set up by the smaller volume of the stone, allowing salts to migrate to the ‘back’ of the blocks and effectively relieving stress at the ‘front’ face.

It is shown that, when expressing arguments in terms of their logarithms, the Laplace transform of a function is related to the antiderivative of this function by a simple convolution. This allows efficient numerical computations of moment generating functions of positive random variables and their inversion. The application of the method is straightforward, apart from the necessity to implement it using high-precision arithmetics. In numerical examples the approach is demonstrated to be particularly useful for distributions with heavy tails, Such as lognormal, Weibull, or Pareto distributions, which are otherwise difficult to handle. The computational efficiency compared to other methods is demonstrated for an M/G/1 queueing problem.
