In this work five different ways of intervention, strategically articulated, on the social world, are established. And it includes two approaches regarding the realm of knowledge and that of social change. In the second approach, five basic categories are proposed: society, State, economy, poverty and power, which work as basic a framework understand society and to serve as an orientation to carry out the necessary change. This approach to fundamental problems in our society can be applied both to world order conflicts as well as to regional and local ones. The five-fold way embodies the set of strategic packages that make it possible to understand social life and to transform it.

A morphometric analysis was performed for the late Middle Miocene bivalve species lineage of Polititapes tricuspis (Eichwald, 1829) (Veneridae: Tapetini). Specimens from various localities grouped into two stratigraphically successive biozones, i.e. the upper Ervilia Zone and the Sarmatimactra Zone, were investigated using a multi-method approach. A Generalized Procrustes Analysis was computed for fifteen landmarks, covering characteristics of the hinge, muscle scars, and pallial line. The shell outline was separately quantified by applying the Fast Fourier Transform, which redraws the outline by fitting in a combination of trigonometric curves. Shell size was calculated as centroid size from the landmark configuration. Shell thickness, as not covered by either analysis, was additionally measured at the centroid. The analyses showed significant phenotypic differentiation between specimens from the two biozones. The bivalves become distinctly larger and thicker over geological time and develop circular shells with stronger cardinal teeth and a deeper pallial sinus. Data on the paleoenvironmental changes in the late Middle Miocene Central Paratethys Sea suggest the phenotypic shifts to be functional adaptations. The typical habitats for Polititapes changed to extensive, very shallow shores exposed to high wave action and tidal activity. Caused by the growing need for higher mechanical stability, the bivalves produced larger and thicker shells with stronger cardinal teeth. The latter are additionally shifted towards the hinge center to compensate for the lacking lateral teeth and improve stability. The deepening pallial sinus is related to a deeper burrowing habit, which is considered to impede being washed out in the new high-energy settings.

High-latitude ecosystems play an important role in the global carbon cycle and in regulating the climate system and are presently undergoing rapid environmental change. Accurate land cover data sets are required to both document these changes as well as to provide land-surface information for benchmarking and initializing Earth system models. Earth system models also require specific land cover classification systems based on plant functional types (PFTs), rather than species or ecosystems, and so post-processing of existing land cover data is often required. This study compares over Siberia, multiple land cover data sets against one another and with auxiliary data to identify key uncertainties that contribute to variability in PFT classifications that would introduce errors in Earth system modeling. Land cover classification systems from GLC 2000, GlobCover 2005 and 2009, and MODIS collections 5 and 5.1 are first aggregated to a common legend, and then compared to high-resolution land cover classification systems, vegetation continuous fields (MODIS VCFs) and satellite-derived tree heights (to discriminate against sparse, shrub, and forest vegetation). The GlobCover data set, with a lower threshold for tree cover and taller tree heights and a better spatial resolution, tends to have better distributions of tree cover compared to high-resolution data. It has therefore been chosen to build new PFT maps for the ORCHIDEE land surface model at 1 km scale. Compared to the original PFT data set, the new PFT maps based on GlobCover 2005 and an updated cross-walking approach mainly differ in the characterization of forests and degree of tree cover. The partition of grasslands and bare soils now appears more realistic compared with ground truth data. This new vegetation map provides a framework for further development of new PFTs in the ORCHIDEE model like shrubs, lichens and mosses, to represent the water and carbon cycles in northern latitudes better. Updated land cover data sets are critical for improving and maintaining the relevance of Earth system models for assessing climate and human impacts on biogeochemistry and biophysics.

The increasing complexity of current software systems is encouraging the development of self-managed software architectures, i.e. systems capable of reconfiguring their structure at runtime to fulfil a set of goals. Several approaches have covered different aspects of their development, but some issues remain open, such as the maintainability or the scalability of self-management subsystems. Centralized approaches, like self-adaptive architectures, offer good maintenance properties but do not scale well for large systems. On the contrary, decentralized approaches, like self-organising architectures, offer good scalability but are not maintainable: reconfiguration specifications are spread and often tangled with functional specifications. In order to address these issues, this paper presents an aspect-oriented autonomic reconfiguration approach where: (1) each subsystem is provided with self-management properties so it can evolve itself and the components that it is composed of; (2) self-management concerns are isolated and encapsulated into aspects, thus improving its reuse and maintenance. By combining complex network theory and data mining techniques, we provide objective criteria for optimization of the functional network representation of generic multivariate time series. In particular, we propose a method for the principled selection of the threshold value for functional network reconstruction from raw data, and for proper identification of the network's indicators that unveil the most discriminative information on the system for classification purposes. We illustrate our method by analysing networks of functional brain activity of healthy subjects, and patients suffering from Mild Cognitive Impairment, an intermediate stage between the expected cognitive decline of normal aging and the more pronounced decline of dementia. We discuss extensions of the scope of the proposed methodology to network engineering purposes, and to other data mining tasks.

Commercial computer-aided design systems support the geometric definition of product, but they lack utilities to support initial design stages. Typical tasks such as customer need capture, functional requirement formalization, or design parameter definition are conducted in applications that, for instance, support ?quality function deployment? and ?failure modes and effects analysis? techniques. Such applications are noninteroperable with the computer-aided design systems, leading to discontinuous design information flows. This study addresses this issue and proposes a method to enhance the integration of design information generated in the early design stages into a commercial computer-aided design system. To demonstrate the feasibility of the approach adopted, a prototype application was developed and two case studies were executed.

It is still an open question whether subjective memory complaints (SMC) can actually be considered to be clinically relevant predictors for the development of an objective memory impairment and even dementia. There is growing evidence that suggests that SMC are associated with an increased risk of dementia and with the presence of biological correlates of early Alzheimer's disease. In this paper, in order to shed some light on this issue, we try to discern whether subjects with SMC showed a different profile of functional connectivity compared with subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and healthy elderly subjects. In the present study, we compare the degree of synchronization of brain signals recorded with magnetoencephalography between three groups of subjects (56 in total): 19 with MCI, 12 with SMC and 25 healthy controls during a memory task. Synchronization likelihood, an index based on the theory of nonlinear dynamical systems, was used to measure functional connectivity. Briefly, results show that subjects with SMC have a very similar pattern of connectivity to control group, but on average, they present a lower synchronization value. These results could indicate that SMC are representing an initial stage with a hypo-synchronization (in comparison with the control group) where the brain system is still not compensating for the failing memory networks, but behaving as controls when compared with the MCI subjects.

Fixation-off sensitivity (FOS) denotes the forms of EEG abnormalities, which are elicited by elimination of central vision or fixation. The phenomenon seems to depend on variables that modulate the alpha rhythm, however, the cerebral mechanisms underlying FOS remain unclear [1]. The scarce previous fMRI findings related to FOS have shown activation in extrastriate cortex [2] and also in frontal areas [3][4]. On the other hand, simultaneous EEG-fMRI technique has been used to assess the relationship between spontaneous power fluctuations of electrical rhythms and associated fMRI signal modulations. These studies have identified that lateral frontoparietal networks show a negative correlation with alpha band in healthy subjects. This neuroanatomical pattern is related to attentional processes and cognitive resources. Moreover, a sub-beta band (17-23 Hz) has been identified with posterior cingulate, temporoparietal junction and dorso-medial prefrontal cortex activations, which correspond to the DMN [5][6].
