Differences in how organisms modify their environment can evolve rapidly and might influence adaptive population divergence [1, 2]. In a common garden experiment in aquatic mesocosms, we found that adult stickleback from a recently diverged pair of lake and stream populations had contrasting effects on ecosystem metrics. These modifications were caused by both genetic and plastic differences between populations and were sometimes comparable in magnitude to those caused by the presence/ absence of stickleback. Lake and streamfish differentially affected the biomass of zooplankton and phytoplankton, the concentration of phosphorus, and the abundance of several prey (e.g., copepods) and non-prey (e.g., cyanobacteria) species. The adult mediated effects on mesocosm ecosystems influenced the survival and growth of a subsequent generation of juvenile stickleback reared in the same mesocosms. The prior presence of adults decreased the overall growth rate of juveniles, and the prior presence of stream adults lowered overall juvenile survival. Among the survivors, lake juveniles grew faster than co-occurring stream juveniles, except in mesocosm ecosystems previously modified by adult lake fish that were reared on plankton. Overall, our results provide evidence for reciprocal interactions between ecosystem dynamics and evolutionary change (i.e., eco-evolutionary feedbacks) in the early stages of adaptive population divergence.

Inhalation anesthesia with isoflurane is a well-established and safe method used in small laboratory animals. In most cases oxygen is used as a carrier gas for isoflurane, but room air or mixtures of oxygen with air or nitrous oxide are also being used. Anesthesia is therefore administered using different fractions of inspired oxygen (FiO2), and this may have consequences for the outcome of experiments. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of FiO2 on rat hind limb ischemia/reperfusion injury and to refine the used inhalation anesthesia. Male Wistar rats were subjected to 3.5 h of ischemia and 2 h of reperfusion, and divided into three groups according to FiO2 in the O2/air/isoflurane anesthesia gas mixture: 40%, 60%, and 100% O2. Normal, healthy rats were used as controls. Muscle edema and creatine kinase MM, a marker for myocyte necrosis, were significantly increased with 40% FiO2 as compared with 100% FiO2 (P<0.05). Partial pressure of oxygen, oxygen saturation, and oxyhemoglobin were significantly higher in the 100% O2 group as compared with 40% O2. No significant differences were detected for other parameters, such as the oxidative stress markers malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase. We conclude that a refined inhalation anesthesia setting using 40% FiO2, reflecting more or less the clinical situation, leads to a more severe and more physiologically relevant reperfusion injury than higher FiO2. Oxidative stress did not correlate with FiO2 and seemed to have no influence on reperfusion injury.

In order to constrain the salinity of subduction zone fluids, piston-cylinder experiments have been conducted to investigate the partitioning behaviour of Cl and F in subducted sediments. These experiments were performed at H2O-undersaturated conditions with a synthetic pelite starting composition containing 800 ppm Cl, over a pressure and temperature range of 2.5–4.5 GPa and 630–900 °C. Repetitive experiments were conducted with 1900 ppm Cl + 1000 ppm F, and 2100 ppm Cl. Apatite represents the most Cl-abundant mineral phase, with Cl concentration varying in the range 0.1–2.82 wt%. Affinity for Cl decreases over the following sequence: aqueous fluid > apatite ⩾ melt > other hydrous minerals (phengite, biotite and amphibole). It was found that addition of F to the Cl-bearing starting composition significantly lowers the Cl partition coefficients between apatite and melt (DClAp–melt) and apatite and aqueous fluid (DClAp–aq). Cl–OH exchange coefficients between apatite and melt (KdCl–OHAp–melt) and apatite and aqueous fluid (KdCl–OHAp–aq) were subsequently calculated. KdCl–OHAp–melt was found to vary from 1 to 58, showing an increase with temperature and a decrease with pressure and displaying a regular decrease with increasing H2O content in melt. Mole fractions of Cl and OH in melt were calculated based on an ideal mixing model for H2O, OH, O, Cl and F. The Cl contents of other hydrous minerals (phengite, biotite and amphibole) fall between 200 and 800 ppm, with resultant Cl partition coefficients from 0.02 to 0.49, appearing independent of the bulk Cl and F content. Preliminary data from this study show that the partitioning behaviour of F is strongly in favour of apatite relative to melt and phengite, with DFAp–melt = 15–51. Apatites from representative eclogite facies metasediments were examined and found to have low Cl contents close to ∼100 ppm. Calculations using our experimentally determined KdCl–OHAp–aq of 0.004 at 2.5 GPa, 630 °C indicate a low salinity character (0.5–2 wt% NaCleq) for the fluid formed during dehydration of subducted oceanic sediment at ∼80 km depth.

Glucagon is a 29 amino acid polypeptide hormone produced in the (alpha) cells of the pancreatic islets. The purpose of this research was to understand better the role of glucagon in the regulation of metabolic processes. As with other polypeptide hormones, the synthesis of glucagon is thought to involve a larger precursor, which is then enzymatically cleaved to the functional form. The specific research objectives were to obtain cloned copies of the messenger RNA (mRNA) for pancreatic glucagon, to determine their primary sequences, and from this coding information to deduce the amino acid sequence of the initial glucagon precursor. From this suggested preproglucagon sequence and prior information on possible proglucagon intermediate processing products, the overall objective of this research is to propose a possible pathway for the biosynthesis of pancreatic glucagon.^ Synthetic oligodeoxynucleotide probes of 14-nucleotides (14-mer) and 17-nucleotides (a 17-mer) complementary to codons specifying a unique sequence of mature glucagon were synthesized. The ('32)P-labeled-14-mer was hybridized with size-fractionated fetal bovine pancreatic poly(A('+))RNA bound to nitrocellulose. RNA fractions of (TURN)14S were found to hybridize specifically, resulting in an (TURN)10-fold enrichment for these sequences. These poly(A('+))RNAs were translated in a cell-free system and the products analyzed by gel electrophoresis. The translation products were found to be enriched for a protein of the putative size of mammalian preproglucagon ((TURN)21 kd). These enriched RNA fractions were used to construct a complementary DNA (cDNA) library is plasmid pBR322.^ Screening of duplicate colony filters with the ('32)P-labeled-17-mer and a ('32)P-labeled-17-mer-primed cDNA probe indicated 25 possible glucagon clones from 3100 colonies screened. Restriction mapping of 6 of these clones suggested that they represented a single mRNA species. Primary sequence analysis of one clone containing a 1200 base pair DNA insert revealed that it contained essentially a full-length copy of glucagon cDNA.^ Analaysis of the cDNA suggested that it encoded an initial translation product of 180 amino acids with an M(,r) = 21 kd. The first initiation codon (ATG, methionine) followed by the longest open reading frame of 540 nucleotides was preceded by a 5'-untranslated region of 90 nucleotides, and was followed by a longer 3'-untranslated region of 471 nucleotides, resulting in a total of 1101 nucleotides. . . . Lodestar, a Drosophila maternal-effect gene, is essential for proper chromosome segregation during embryonic mitosis. Mutations in lodestar cause chromatin bridging in anaphase, preventing the sister chromatids from fully separating and leaving chromatin tangled at the metaphase plate. Drosophila lodestar protein was originally identified, in purified fractions of Drosophila Kc cell nuclear extracts, by its ability to suppress the generation of long RNA polymerase II transcripts. The human homolog of this protein (hLodestar) was cloned and studied in comparison to the Drosophila lodestar activities. The results of these studies show, similar to the Drosophila protein, hLodestar has dsDNA-dependent ATPase and transcription termination activity in vitro. hLodestar has also been shown to release RNA polymerase I and II stalled at a cyclobutane thymine dimer. Lodestar belongs to the SNF2 family of proteins, which are members of the DExH/D helicase super-family. The SNF2 family of proteins are believed to play a critical role in altering protein-DNA interactions in a variety of cellular contexts. We have recently isolated a human cDNA (hLodestar) that shares significant homology to the Drosophila lodestar gene. The 4.6 kb clone contains an open reading frame of 1162 amino acids, and shares 55% similarity and 46% identity to the Drosophila Lodestar protein sequence. Our studies looking for hLodestar interacting proteins revealed an association with CDC5L in the yeast two-hybrid system and co-immunoprecipitation experiments. CDC5L has been well documented to be a component of the spliceosome. Our data suggests hLodestar is involved in splicing through in vitro assembly and splicing reactions, in addition to its association with spliceosomes purified from HeLa nuclear extract. Although many other members of the DExH/D helicase super-family have been linked to splicing, this is the first SNF2 family member to be implicated in the splicing reaction. ^

Urines from patients administered mutagenic antineoplastic drugs were significantly mutagenic in the Ames assay, and hence may pose a genotoxic hazard to hospital personnel or family members caring for the patient. The urines were tested for mutagenicity in several different strains of Salmonella typhimurium that were uvr positive or negative (TA98, TA100, TA102, UTH8413, UTH8414). The urines were fractionated by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the fractions assayed for mutagenicity in the strains in which the whole urine was mutagenic. Only fractions of urines containing the parent compound (cisplatin, doxorubicin, or mitomycin) were mutagenic; no other fraction showed significant mutagenicity. However, urine containing cyclophosphamide had two fractions that were mutagenic. One fraction, the fraction containing cyclophosphamide, required metabolic activation for mutagenicity. The other fraction did not require activation for mutagenicity.^ The chemical and mutagenic stability of these urines at room temperature was assayed over a 14 day period. The parent compound degraded within the first seven days, but the urines remained mutagenic. Cis-platinum was chemically stable in the urine; however, the urine decreased in mutagenicity. The decrease was probably the result of stable ligands binding to the platinum.^ Inactivation methods were developed to reduce the genotoxic hazard. Urine containing cisplatin was inactivated by complexing the cisplatin with diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC). Oxidation with NaOCl of urines containing mitomycin and doxorubicin (sodium thiosulfate must be added to the doxorubicin urine) results in mutagenic inactivation. Inactivation of urine containing cyclophosphamide requires oxidation with alkaline potassium permaganate and trapping of active degradation products with sodium thiosulfate. Urines containing these drugs can be inactivated, but not always by the same method that inactivates the drug alone in solution. Therefore, in the future development of inactivation methods, both chemical and mutagenic assays are necessary to determine effectiveness. Methods of inactivation of mutagenic excreta developed in this study are both effective and practical. ^

c-Src, a protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) the specific activity of which is increased $>$20-fold in $\sim$80% of colon tumors and colon tumor cell lines, plays a role in both growth regulation and tumorigenicity of colon tumor cells. To examine the effect of increased c-Src specific activity on colon tumor cells, coumarin-derived tyrosine analog PTK inhibitors were assessed in a standard colon tumor cell line, HT-29. Of the nine compounds tested for inhibiting c-Src activity in a standard immune complex kinase assay from c-Src precipitated from HT-29 cells, the 7,8-dihydroxy-containing compounds daphnetin and fraxetin were most effective, with IC$\sb{50}$s of 0.6 $\pm$ 0.2 mM and 0.6 $\pm$ 0.3 mM, respectively. Treatment of HT-29 cells with daphnetin resulted in inhibition of cell growth in a dose-dependent manner. In contrast, scopoletin, a relatively poor Src inhibitor in vitro, did not inhibit HT-29 cell growth in the concentration range tested. In daphnetin treated cells, a dose-dependent decrease of c-Src activity paralleling cell growth inhibition was also observed; the IC$\sb{50}$ was 0.3 $\pm$ 0.1 mM for c-Src autophosphorylation. In contrast, the IC$\sb{50}$ for c-Src protein level was $>$ 0.6 mM, indicating that the effects of daphnetin were primarily an enzymatic activity of c-Src, rather than protein level in HT-29 cells. These results are the first to demonstrate that c-Src specific activity regulates colon tumor cell growth.^ To elucidate the signaling pathways activated by c-Src in colon tumor cells, the Src family substrate FAK, which has been shown to play a role in both extracellular matrix-dependent cell growth and survival, was examined. Coprecipitation assays showed Src-FAK association in detergent insoluble fractions of both attached and detached HT-29 cells, indicating that Src-FAK association in HT-29 cells is stable and, unlike untransformed cells, not dependent on cell-substratum contact. FAK also coprecipitated with Grb2, an adaptor protein also playing a role in cell proliferation and survival, in both attached and detached HT-29 cells, suggesting that a Src-FAK-Grb2-mediated signaling pathway(s) in HT-29 cells is/are constitutively activated.^ FAK was also analyzed in c-src antisense HT-29 clones AS15 and AS33 in which c-Src is specifically reduced by transfection of an antisense expression vector. FAK protein level is unexpectedly decreased in both AS15 and AS33 cells by 5-fold and 1.5-fold compared to HT-29, respectively, corresponding with the decreased expression of c-Src observed in these cells. FAK protein level was not decreased compared to parental in the c-src "sense" clone S8. Northern blot analyses showed decreased FAK mRNA levels compared to parental in AS15 and AS33, correlating with decreased FAK protein level, indicating that FAK activity in the antisense cells is regulated, at least in part, by altering FAK expression, and that this regulation is Src dependent. Because FAK has been implicated in anoikis, the ability of c-src antisense cells to survive in the absence of cell-substratum contact was examined. Decreased cell survival is seen in both AS15 and AS33, correlating with the decreases in c-Src and FAK levels and tumorigenicity in these cells. These results suggest that at least one mechanism by which activation of c-Src contributes to tumorigenic phenotype of colon tumor cells is by aberrantly promoting a survival signal through unregulated Src-FAK-Grb2 complexes. Geochemical behavior of Rb-Sr and K-Ar systems in Upper Vendian clayey rocks of the Russian Platform is under consideredation. The use of additional data on grain size fractions of sedimentary rocks recovered from boreholes drilled in the Gavrilov Yam area made it possible to confirm the previous conclusion on two stages of epigenetic matter transformation (approximately 600 and 400 Ma ago). Distortions are related to transformation of sediments due to interaction in the water-rock system. Interaction degree was more intense in the upper part of the sedimentary section relative to its lower strata. These conclusions are substantiated by materials from boreholes that characterize different types of Vendian sections and different tectonic zones.

Authigenic phosphatic laminites enclosed in phosphorite crusts from the shelf off Peru (10°01' S and 10°24' S) consist of carbonate fluorapatite layers, which contain abundant sulfide minerals including pyrite (FeS2) and sphalerite (ZnS). Low d34Spyrite values (average -28.8 per mill) agree with bacterial sulfate reduction and subsequent pyrite formation. Stable sulfur isotopic compositions of sulfate bound in carbonate fluorapatite are lower than that of sulfate from ambient sea water, suggesting bacterial reoxidation of sulfide by sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. The release of phosphorus and subsequent formation of the autochthonous phosphatic laminites are apparently caused by the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria and associated sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. Following an extraction-phosphorite dissolution-extraction procedure, molecular fossils of sulfate-reducing bacteria (mono-O-alkyl glycerol ethers, di-O-alkyl glycerol ethers, as well as the short-chain branched fatty acids i/ai-C15:0, i/ai-C17:0 and 10MeC16:0) are found to be among the most abundant compounds. The fact that these molecular fossils of sulfate-reducing bacteria are distinctly more abundant after dissolution of the phosphatic laminite reveals that the lipids are tightly bound to the mineral lattice of carbonate fluorapatite. Moreover, compared with the autochthonous laminite, molecular fossils of sulfate-reducing bacteria are: (1) significantly less abundant and (2) not as tightly bound to the mineral lattice in the other, allochthonous facies of the Peruvian crusts consisting of phosphatic coated grains. These observations confirm the importance of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the formation of the phosphatic laminite. Model calculations highlight that organic matter degradation by sulfate-reducing bacteria has the potential to liberate sufficient phosphorus for phosphogenesis.

The variability in microbial communities (abundance and biomass), bacterial production and ectoaminopeptidase activity, particulate and dissolved organic carbon (POC, DOC), and particulate and dissolved lipids was examined in spring 1995 in the northwestern Mediterranean, where a transition from the end of a bloom to pre-oligotrophic conditions was observed. Four time series of 36 h each and 4 h sampling intervals were performed at 5 m and at the chlorophyll maximum (30 m) between 11 and 31 May. Simultaneous measurements of pigments, abundance of hetero- and autotrophic flagellates, bacteria and POC enabled the estimation of living POC (defined as autotrophic-C plus heterotrophic-C biomass), and thus the detrital organic carbon. During the first 2 time series (11 to 15 May), the bacterial-C biomass was higher than the autotrophic-C biomass at 5 m (ratio 1.4 and 1.7), whereas the opposite trend was observed in the chlorophyll peak (ratio 0.7 for the first cycle). However, at the end of May, autotrophic-C biomass was equivalent to bacterial-C biomass at both depths studied. The detrital pool remained a more or less constant fraction of the POC (52, 53 and 47% on 11-12 May, 14-15 May and 30-31 May) at the chlorophyll peak, whereas it decreased significantly with time (62 to 53%) at 5 m. Relationships between bacterial activities and evolution of available resources were not systematically evidenced from our 36 h diel cycle data. Nevertheless, at the monthly scale, comparison of bacterial carbon demand (BCD) to potential carbon resources (detrital POC and DOC) showed that bacteria fed differently on the various pools. From ectoaminopeptidase turnover rates and detrital POC, the potential hydrolysis rate of detritus was calculated. Depending on the choice of conversion factors for bacterial production and estimates of hydrolysis turnover rates, it was shown that bacterial hydrolysis of detritus could be one of the DOC accumulation sources. We observed that the percentage of BCD supplied by detrital POC hydrolysis increased in the surface and decreased in the chlorophyll peak. An index of lipid degradation in POC, the lipolysis index, increased during the month at 5 m, also indicating a higher hydrolysis of POC. The opposite trend was observed in the chlorophyll maximum layer. The selective decrease in dissolved lipids in DOC in the chlorophyll maximum layer, particularly free fatty acids, also suggests that bacteria utilized increased fractions of carbon sources from the DOC. We concluded that partitioning between DOC and detritus as resources for bacteria can change during the rapid transition period from mesotrophy to oligotrophy in the northwestern Mediterranean.

Bacterial and thermogenic hydrocarbons are present in the sorbed-gas fraction of Peru margin sediments. At Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 681, 682, 684, and 686, bacterial gases are restricted to the early diagenetic zones, where dissolved sulfate has been exhausted and methanogenesis occurs. Methane migrating into the sulfate zone at Sites 681, 684, 686, and possibly 682, has been consumed anaerobically by methanotrophs, maintaining the low concentrations and causing an isotope shift in d13C(CH4) to more positive values. Significant amounts of C2+ hydrocarbons occur at the shelf Sites 680/681, 684, and 686/687, where these hydrocarbons may be associated with hypersaline fluids. There is evidence at Site 679 that sorbed C2+ hydrocarbons may also have been transported by hypersaline fluids. This characteristic C2+ hydrocarbon signature in the sorbed-gas fractions of sediments at Site 679 is not reflected in data obtained using the conventional "free-," "canned-," or "headspace-gas" procedures. The molecular and isotope compositions of the sorbed-gas fraction indicate that this gas may have a thermogenic source and may have spilled over with the hypersaline fluids from the Salaverry Basin into the Lima Basin. These traces of thermogenic hydrocarbon gases are over-mature (about 1.5% Ro) and are discordant with the less-mature sediments in which they are found. This observation supports the migration of these hydrocarbons, possibly from continental sources. Sorbed-gas analyses may provide important geochemical information, in addition to that of the free-gases. Sorbed-gases are less sensitive to activities in the interstitial fluids, such as methanogenesis and methanotrophy, and may faithfully record the migration of hydrocarbons associated with hypersaline fluids.

The silicate fractions of recent pelagic sediments in the central north Pacific Ocean are dominated by eolian dust derived from central Asia. An 11 Myr sedimentary record at ODP Sites 885/886 at 44.7°N, 168.3°W allows the evaluation of how such dust and its sources have changed in response to late Cenozoic climate and tectonics. The extracted eolian fraction contains variable amounts (>70%) of clay minerals with subordinate quartz and plagioclase. Uniform Nd isotopic compositions (epsilon-Nd =38.6 to 310.5) and Sm/Nd ratios (0.170-0.192) for most of the 11 Myr record demonstrate a well-mixed provenance in the basins north of the Tibetan Plateau and the Gobi Desert that was a source of dust long before the oldest preserved Asian loess formed. epsilon-Nd values of up to 36.5 for samples 62.9 Ma indicate <=35 wt% admixture of a young, Kamchatka-like volcanic arc component. The coherence of Pb and Nd in the erosional cycle allows us to constrain the Pb isotopic composition of Asian loess devoid of anthropogenic contamination to 206Pb/204Pb =18.97 +/- 0.06, 207Pb/204Pb =15.67 +/- 0.02, 208Pb/204Pb =39.19 +/- 0.11. 87Sr/86Sr (0.711-0.721) and Rb/Sr ratios (0.39-1.1) vary with dust mineralogy and provide an age indication of ~250 Ma. 40Ar/39Ar ages of six dust samples are uniform around 200 Ma and match the K-Ar ages of modern dust deposited on Hawaii. These data reflect the weighted age average of illite formation. Changes from illite- smectite with significant kaolinite to illite- and chlorite-rich, kaolinite-free assemblages since the late Pliocene document changes in the intensity of chemical weathering in the source region. Such weathering evidently did not disturb the K-Ar systematics, and only induced scatter in the Rb-Sr data. We propose that when smectite forms at the expense of illite, K and Ar are quantitatively lost from what becomes smectite, but are quantitatively retained in adjacent illite layers. 40Ar/39Ar age data, therefore, are insensitive to smectite formation during chemical weathering but date the diagenetic growth of illite, the major K-bearing phase in the dust. Over the past 12 Myr, the dust flux to the north Pacific increased by more than an order of magnitude, documenting a substantial drying of central Asia. This climatic change, however, did not alter the ultimate source of the dust, and neoformational products of chemical weathering always remained subordinate to assemblages reworked by mechanical erosion in dust deposited in eastern Asia and the Pacific Ocean.

X-ray diffraction analyses have been carried out on 128 samples of Miocene to Quaternary sediments from ODP Sites 794, 795 and 797. Some clay fractions of samples from Site 797 have also been studied for rare earth elements and by Nd isotopic analyses. These three sites display similar lithological and clay assemblages (with dominant chlorite, illite and smectite) showing that the sedimentation was homogeneous throughout the whole Japan Sea Basin. Three mineralogical zones are recognized. The first zone (Lower Miocene sandy clay of Sites 794 and 797) is mainly composed of chlorite resulting from hydrothermal transformation of arc-derived smectite, due to sill injections during the initial oceanic spreading stage. The second zone (Lower Miocene to Lower Pliocene siliceous claystone and diatomaceous silty clay) is dominated by arc-derived smectite; the abundance of this mineral decreases upwards while illite and chlorite increase. This trend reflects a change of detrital source, from an eastern arc-derived source (epsilon -Nd**t>-3.3); variable LREE enrichment) to a western continental crust source (epsilon-Nd**t<-9.4; shale-like REE patterns); climatic modifications in the current dynamics are proposed as a cause for this change. The third zone (Upper Pliocene to Recent silty clay with minor diatom oozes) is characterized at Site 797 by increasing amounts of illite and chlorite. This reflects a more and more important western supply which is assumed to be related to tectonic rejuvenations of the Asian margin or climatic modifications affecting the alteration conditions or the current dynamics. At Sites 794 and 795, the more or less sharp supply of chlorite seems to be driven by the incipient subduction zone on the eastern margin of the Japan Sea.

The exchangeable cation compositions of organic-poor terrigenous sediments containing smectite as primary ion exchanger from a series of holes along ODP Leg 168 transect on the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge have been examined as a function of distance from the ridge axis and burial depth. The total cation exchange capacity (CEC) values of the sediments ranged from 2 to 59 meq/100 g, increasing with increases in the wt.% smectite. At the seafloor, the exchangeable cation compositions involving Na, K, Mg, and Ca, expressed in terms of equivalent fraction, are nearly constant regardless of the different transect sites: XNa = 0.21 ± 0.04, XK = 0.08 ± 0.01, XMg = 0.33 ± 0.09, and XCa = 0.38 ± 0.09. The calculated selectivity coefficients of the corresponding quaternary exchange reactions, calculated using porewater data, are in log units -5.45 ± 0.39 for Na, 1.97 ± 0.49 for K, 0.42 ± 0.41 for Mg, and 3.06 ± 0.69 for Ca. The exchangeable cation compositions below the seafloor change systematically with distance from the ridge crest and burial depth, conforming to the trends of the same cations in the porewaters. The selectivities for Na and Mg are roughly constant at temperatures from 2 to 66°C, indicating that the equivalent fractions of these two cations are independent of sediment alteration taking place on the ridge flank. Unlike Na and Mg, the temperature influence is significant for K and Ca, with Ca-selectivity decreases being coupled with increases in K-selectivity. Although potentially related to diagenetic and/or hydrothermal mineral precipitation or recrystallization, no evidence of such alteration was detected by XRD and TEM. In sites where upwelling of hydrothermal fluids from basement is occurring, the K-selectivity of the sediment is appreciably higher than at the other sites and corresponds to the formation of (Fe, Mg) rich smectite and zeolites. Our study indicates that local increases in K-selectivity at hydrothermal sites are caused by the formation of these authigenic minerals.

Data on amounts of various functional groups, i.e. aldehyde, acid, ester, alcohol, thiol and aromatic groups in several fractions of low-polarity dissolved organic matter are presented. An assumption that this organic matter is part of the lipid fraction is not confirmed. Amount of aromatic compounds in waters of the Northwest Indian Ocean is estimated to be about 1000 times higher than quantity of aromatic hydrocarbons discharged into the ocean each year in petroleum and petroleum products.
