Chalcopyrite Cu(In,Al)Se-2 (CIAS) thin films are grown on stainless steel substrate through one-step electrodeposition at room temperature. Indium is partially replaced with aluminum to increase the band gap of CuInSe2 without creating significant change in the original structure. The deposition potential is optimized at -0.8 V (vs. SCE) and annealing of the films is performed in vacuum to remove binary phases present in the as-deposited films. In/Al ratio is varied from 1/9 to 8/2, to find the suitability for solar cell fabrication. For In/Al ratio of less than 8/2, CuAlSe2 phase is formed in the film in addition to the CIAS phase. Depth profile X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the CIAS sample prepared with In/Al ratio of 8/2 in the precursor solution confirmed the existence of single phase CIAS throughout the film. This film showed p-type conductivity while the rest of the samples with In/Al ratio less than 8/2 showed n-type conductivity. The band gap of the film varied from 1.06 to 1.45 eV, with variation in deposition potential. Structural, optical, morphological, compositional and electrical characterizations are carried out to establish the suitability of this film for solar cell fabrication. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetric (ADSC) studies on quaternary Ge15Te80-xIn5Agx glasses show the non-reversing enthalpy (Delta H-NR) at T-g to exhibit a broad global minimum in the 8% <= x <= 16% range of Ag, an observation that is taken evidence for existence of an Intermediate Phase (IP) in that range. Glasses at x < 8% are in the flexible phase while those at x > 16% in the stressed-rigid phase. The nature of crystalline phases formed upon crystallization of bulk glasses are elucidated by XRD studies, and reveal presence of Te, GeTe, Ag8GeTe6, AgTe, In2Te3 and In4Te3 phases. These experiments also reveal that the fraction of Ag- bearing phases increases while those of Te- bearing ones decreases with increasing x, suggesting progressive replacement of Te-Te bonds by Ag-Te bonds. Mesoporous quaternary bioactive glasses and glass-ceramic with alkali-alkaline-earth oxide were successfully synthesized by using non-ionic block copolymer P123 and evaporation induced self assembly (EISA) process followed by acid treatment assisted sal-gel method. As prepared samples has been characterized for the structural, morphological and textural properties with the various analytical techniques. Glass dissolution/ion release rate in simulated body fluid (SBF) was monitored by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) emission spectroscopy, whereas the formation of apatite phase and its crystallization at the glass and glass-ceramic surface was examined by structural, textural and microscopic probes. The influence of alkaline-earth oxide content on the glass structure followed by textural property has become more evident. The pristine glass samples exhibit a wormhole-like mesoporous structure, whereas the glass-ceramic composition is found to be in three different phases, namely crystalline hydroxyapatite, wollastonite and a residual glassy phase as observed in Cerabone (R) A/W. The existence of calcium orthophosphate phase is closely associated with the pore walls comprising nanometric-sized ``inclusions''. The observed high surface area in conjunction with the structural features provides the possible explanation for experimentally observed enhanced bioactivity through the easy access of ions to the fluid. On the other hand, presence of multiple phases in glass-ceramic sample inhibits or delays the kinetics of apatite formation. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Rice landraces are lineages developed by farmers through artificial selection during the long-term domestication process. Despite huge potential for crop improvement, they are largely understudied in India. Here, we analyse a suite of phenotypic characters from large numbers of Indian landraces comprised of both aromatic and non-aromatic varieties. Our primary aim was to investigate the major determinants of diversity, the strength of segregation among aromatic and non-aromatic landraces as well as that within aromatic landraces. Using principal component analysis, we found that grain length, width and weight, panicle weight and leaf length have the most substantial contribution. Discriminant analysis can effectively distinguish the majority of aromatic from non-aromatic landraces. More interestingly, within aromatic landraces long-grain traditional Basmati and short-grain non-Basmati aromatics remain morphologically well differentiated. The present research emphasizes the general patterns of phenotypic diversity and finds out the most important characters. It also confirms the existence of very unique short-grain aromatic landraces, perhaps carrying signatures of independent origin of an additional aroma quantitative trait locus in the indica group, unlike introgression of specific alleles of the BADH2 gene from the japonica group as in Basmati. We presume that this parallel origin and evolution of aroma in short-grain indica landraces are linked to the long history of rice domestication that involved inheritance of several traits from Oryza nivara, in addition to O. rufipogon. We conclude with a note that the insights from the phenotypic analysis essentially comprise the first part, which will likely be validated with subsequent molecular analysis.

We present a comparative study of the temperature dependent magnetic properties and electron paramagnetic resonance parameters of nano and bulk samples of Bi0.2Sr0.8MnO3 (BSMO). Bulk BSMO is known to have a high T-N similar to 260K and robust charge ordering (T-CO similar to 360 K). We confirm that the bulk sample shows an antiferromagnetic transition around similar to 260K and a spin-glass transition similar to 40 K. For the nano sample, we see a clear ferromagnetic transition at around similar to 120 K. We conclude that spin glass state, which is present due to the co-existence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states in the bulk sample, is suppressed in the nano sample and ferromagnetism is induced instead. The general procedure for synthesizing the rack and pinion mechanism up to seven precision conditions is developed. To illustrate the method, the mechanism has been synthesized in closed form for three precision conditions of path generation, two positions of function generation, and a velocity condition at one of the precision points. This mechanism has a number of advantages over conventional four bar mechanisms. First, since the rack is always tangent to the pinion, the transmission angle is always 90 deg minus the pressure angle of the rack. Second, with both translation and rotation of the rock occurring, multiple outputs are available. Other advantages include the generation of monotonic functions for a wide variety of motion and nonmonotonic functions for a full range of motion as well as nonlinear amplified motions. In this work the mechanism is made to satisfy a number of amplified motions. In this work the mechanism is made to satisfy a number of practical design requirements such as completely rotatable input crank and others. By including the velocity specification, the designer has considerably more control of the output motion. The method of solution developed in this work uses the complex number method of mechanism synthesis. A numerical example is included

An experimental charge-density analysis of pyrazinamide (a first line antitubercular drug) was performed using high-resolution X-ray diffraction data (sin theta/lambda)(max) = 1.1 angstrom(-1)] measured at 100 (2) K. The structure was solved by direct methods using SHELXS97 and refined by SHELXL97. The total electron density of the pyrazinamide molecule was modeled using the Hansen-Coppens multipole formalism implemented in the XD software. The topological properties of electron density determined from the experiment were compared with the theoretical results obtained from CRYSTAL09 at the B3LYP/6-31G** level of theory. The crystal structure was stabilized by N-H center dot center dot center dot N and N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, in which the N3-H3B center dot center dot center dot N1 and N3-H3A center dot center dot center dot O1 interactions form two types of dimers in the crystal. Hirshfeld surface analysis was carried out to analyze the intermolecular interactions. The fingerprint plot reveals that the N center dot center dot center dot H and O center dot center dot center dot H hydrogen-bonding interactions contribute 26.1 and 18.4%, respectively, of the total Hirshfeld surface. The lattice energy of the molecule was calculated using density functional theory (B3LYP) methods with the 6-31G** basis set. The molecular electrostatic potential of the pyrazinamide molecule exhibits extended electronegative regions around O1, N1 and N2. The existence of a negative electrostatic potential (ESP) region just above the upper and lower surfaces of the pyrazine ring confirm the pi-electron cloud.

Using polarization-dependent x-ray photoemission electron microscopy, we have investigated the surface effects on antiferromagnetic (AFM) domain formation. Depth-resolved information obtained from our study indicates the presence of strain-induced surface AFM domains on some of the cleaved NiO(100) crystals, which are unusually thinner than bulk AFM domain wall widths (similar to 150 nm). Existence of such magnetic skin layer is substantiated by exchange-coupled ferromagnetic Fe domains in Fe/NiO(100), thereby evidencing the influence of this surface AFM domains on interfacial magnetic coupling. Our observations demonstrate a depth evolution of AFM structure in presence of induced surface strain, while the surface symmetry-breaking in absence of induced strain does not modify the bulk AFM domain structure. Realization of such thin surface AFM layer will provide better microscopic understanding of the exchange bias phenomena. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Nanosized cerium and nitrogen co-doped TiO2 (Ce-TiO2-xNx) was synthesized by sol gel method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), FESEM, Fourier transform infrared, N-2 adsorption and desorption methods, photoluminescence and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) DRS techniques. PXRD analysis shows the dopant decreases the crystallite sizes and slows the crystallization of the titania matrix. XPS confirm the existence of cerium ion in +3 or +4 state, and nitrogen in -3 state in Ce-TiO2-xNx. The modified surface of TiO2 provides highly active sites for the dyes at the periphery of the Ce-O-Ti interface and also inhibits Ce particles from sintering. UV-visible DRS studies show that the metal-metal charge transfer (MMCT) of Ti/Ce assembly (Ti4+/Ce3+ -> Ti3+/Ce4+) is responsible for the visible light photocatalytic activity. Photoluminescence was used to determine the effect of cerium ion on the electron-hole pair separation between the two interfaces Ce-TiO2-xNx and Ce2O3. This separation increases with the increase of cerium and nitrogen ion concentrations of doped samples. The degradation kinetics of methylene blue and methyl violet dyes in the presence of sol gel TiO2, Ce-TiO2-xNx and commercial Degussa P25 was determined. The higher visible light activity of Ce-TiO2-xNx was due to the participation of MMCT and interfacial charge transfer mechanism.

We study risk-sensitive control of continuous time Markov chains taking values in discrete state space. We study both finite and infinite horizon problems. In the finite horizon problem we characterize the value function via Hamilton Jacobi Bellman equation and obtain an optimal Markov control. We do the same for infinite horizon discounted cost case. In the infinite horizon average cost case we establish the existence of an optimal stationary control under certain Lyapunov condition. We also develop a policy iteration algorithm for finding an optimal control.

One of the greatest challenges in contemporary condensed matter physics is to ascertain whether the formation of glasses from liquids is fundamentally thermodynamic or dynamic in origin. Although the thermodynamic paradigm has dominated theoretical research for decades, the purely kinetic perspective of the dynamical facilitation (DF) theory has attained prominence in recent times. In particular, recent experiments and simulations have highlighted the importance of facilitation using simple model systems composed of spherical particles. However, an overwhelming majority of liquids possess anisotropy in particle shape and interactions, and it is therefore imperative to examine facilitation in complex glass formers. Here, we apply the DF theory to systems with orientational degrees of freedom as well as anisotropic attractive interactions. By analyzing data from experiments on colloidal ellipsoids, we show that facilitation plays a pivotal role in translational as well as orientational relaxation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the introduction of attractive interactions leads to spatial decoupling of translational and rotational facilitation, which subsequently results in the decoupling of dynamical heterogeneities. Most strikingly, the DF theory can predict the existence of reentrant glass transitions based on the statistics of localized dynamical events, called excitations, whose duration is substantially smaller than the structural relaxation time. Our findings pave the way for systematically testing the DF approach in complex glass formers and also establish the significance of facilitation in governing structural relaxation in supercooled liquids.

This brief presents the capturability analysis of a 3-D Retro-proportional navigation (Retro-PN) guidance law, which uses a negative navigation constant (as against the usual positive one), for intercepting targets having higher speeds than interceptors. This modification makes it possible to achieve collision conditions that were inaccessible to the standard PN law. A modified polar coordinate system, that makes the model more compact, is used in this brief for capturability analysis. In addition to the ratio of the target to interceptor speeds, the directional cosines of the interceptor, and target velocity vectors play a crucial role in the capturability. The existence of nontrivial capture zone of the Retro-PN guidance law and necessary and sufficient conditions, for capturing the target in finite time, are presented. A sufficient condition on the navigation constant is derived to ensure finiteness of the line-of-sight turn rate. The results are more extensive than those available for 2-D engagements, which can be obtained as special cases of this brief. Simulation results are given to support the analytical results.

The precipitation behavior of the magnesium alloy WE43 (Mg-4%Y-2.3%Nd-0.5%Zr) has been studied in strained and unstrained conditions using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Ageing treatments were carried out at three temperatures, namely 210 degrees C, 230 degrees C and 260 degrees C. The precipitation sequence during static aging of solution treated (ST) samples has been identified as ST —> beta'' —> beta' followed by the formation of beta(1) and equilibrium beta precipitates form after very long ageing periods. Dynamic precipitation was observed during high temperature deformation, leading to the formation of beta' and intermediate beta(1) precipitates. The strained samples, when further heat treated, resulted in the transformation of beta(1) into beta equilibrium precipitates. The sequence of dynamic precipitation is ST —> beta(1) —> beta and ST —> beta'. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nonpolar a-plane InN films were grown on r-plane sapphire substrate by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy with GaN underlayer. Effect of growth temperature on structural, morphological, and optical properties has been studied. The growth of nonpolar a-plane (1 1 -2 0) orientation was confirmed by high resolution X-ray diffraction study. The film grown at 500 degrees C shows better crystallinity with the rocking curve FWHM 0.67 degrees and 0.85 degrees along 0 0 0 1] and 1 - 1 0 0] directions, respectively. Scanning electron micrograph shows formation of Indium droplets at higher growth temperature. Room temperature absorption spectra show growth temperature dependent band gap variation from 0.74-0.81 eV, consistent with the expected Burstein-Moss effect. The rectifying behaviour of the I-V curve indicates the existence of Schottky barrier at the InN and GaN interface. (C) 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim
