This work describes the growth of Bi2-xPbxSr2Can-1CunO2n+4 thin films by the dip-coating technique for 0.4 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1. X-ray and Raman spectroscopic techniques were carried out in order to characterize the films at room temperature. From X-ray data it is observed that the films are multi-phased presenting phases 2201, 2212 and 2223 along with the undesirable Ca2PbO4 phase. It is also observed that phase 2212 becomes dominant when Pb content increases. The Raman modes observed agree with the overall features expected for these compounds. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. In the usual and current understanding of planar gauge choices for Abelian and non-Abelian gauge fields, the external defining vector n(mu), can either be space-like (n(2) < 0) or time-like (n(2) > 0) but not light-like (n(2) = 0). In this work we propose a light-like planar gauge that consists of defining a modified gauge-fixing term, L-GF, whose main characteristic is a two-degree violation of Lorentz covariance arising from the fact that four-dimensional space-time spanned entirely by null vectors as basis necessitates two light-like vectors, namely n(mu) and its dual m(mu), with n(2) = m(2) = 0, n . m not equal 0, say, e.g. normalized to n . m = 2.

This work was carried out at Boa Esperanca Farm, sited in Jeriquara, Northeast of São Paulo State aiming to study seven cultivars of Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp). Ramdomized blocks design were used in a split-plot scheme studying the following cultivars: Empasc 307, Fava Larga, Branco de Minas, ICPL 304, ICPL 85063, ICPL 270 and LGR 30, being the last four of them of Indian origin. Cultivars were cut three times during the period May-October, 1992. These cuts were done every twelve weeks, when leaves, flowers, pods and branches were harvested with diameter equal or smaller than 6 mm; the set of these fractions was considered available forage. Results showed that the cultivars, except Empasc 307, always revealed higher percentage of leaves and, consequently, higher dry matter production of this fraction in relation to total available forage. The available forage production, as well as the crude protein and acid detergent fiber percentage and in vitro dry matter digestibility allow to recommend the LGR 30, ICPL 304, Branco de Minas and ICPL 270 cultivars as the most promising ones for utilization as protein banks to be used during dry season.

In this work we present a generalization of an exact sequence of normal bordism groups given in a paper by H. A. Salomonsen (Math. Scand. 32 (1973), 87-111). This is applied to prove that if h : M-n --> Xn+k, 5 less than or equal to n < 2k, is a continuous map between two manifolds and g : M-n --> BO is the classifying map of the stable normal bundle of h such that (h, g)(*) : H-i (M, Z(2)) --> H-i (X x BO, Z(2)) is an isomorphism for i < n - k and an epimorphism for i = n - k, then h bordant to an immersion implies that h is homotopic to an immersion. The second remark complements the result of C. Biasi, D. L. Goncalves and A. K. M. Libardi (Topology Applic. 116 (2001), 293-303) and it concerns conditions for which there exist immersions in the metastable dimension range. Some applications and examples for the main results are also given.

The phytosociological structure was studied in an area of semideciduous mesophytic forest lied on the ascent of the Cuesta of Botucatu. Once the relief of the area was very heterogeneous, the forest, for the sampling process, was divided in three sampling regions: the upper one (on the plateau), the middle one (on the ascent properly said) and the lower one (on the plain). Through the point-centered method, 1224 (408 in each region) trees were sampled. For this work, only the trees with shaft equal or higher than 1.30m high were considered. The three sampling regions showed some interesting differences in regard to the phytosociologic structure. Once there are differences among the soil of the three regions, the variations in the structure must be connected to the differences in the soil.

A spectrum-generating q-algebra, within the framework of SUq(2), as firstly suggested by Iachello, is studied in order to describe the mass spectrum of three generations of quarks and leptons. The SUq(2) quantum group is a q-deformed extension of SU(2), where q = e(alpha) (with alpha real) is the deformation parameter. In this work, the essential use of inequivalent representations of SUq(2) is introduced. The inequivalent representations are labelled by (j, nu(0)), where j = 0, 1/2, 1, ... and nu(0) is a positive real number. A formula for the fermion masses M-m(j, nu(0)), with -j less than or equal to m less than or equal to j is derived. As an example, a possible scheme which corresponds to two triplets (j = 1) associated to up and down quarks is presented here in some detail. They are associated to different values of the deformation parameter, indicating a dependence of the charge Q on the parameter alpha. The masses of the charged leptons are treated in a similar way. The current results show that some mass relations for quarks and leptons found in the literature can be considered as approximations of the equations obtained in the j = 1 representations. The breaking of SUq(2) necessary to describe the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) flavor mixing is briefly discussed.

Nanostructured KSr2Nb5O15 oxide was synthesized by the polymeric precursor method, a chemical synthesis route based on the Pechini's method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the calcined powder at 1150 degreesC were performed in the angular range 5 less than or equal to 20 less than or equal to 120degrees with a 0.02degrees step and a fixed counting time of 30 s. The XRD data were analyzed by the Rietveld refinements using the FullProf software. The results C showed a tetragonal system with the tetragonal tungsten bronze structure (TTB) type (a = 12.4585 (2) Angstrom and c = 3.9423 (6) Angstrom, V = 611,90 (2) Angstrom). In this work, the sites occupancy by the K+ and Sr2+ cations on the TTB type structure were determined. The thermal parameters (B) were analyzed. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work presents results concerning the preparation of redispersible tin oxide nanoparticles achieved by using Tiron molecule ((OH)(2)C(6)H(2) (SO(3)Na)(2)) as surface modifying agent. The adsorption isotherm measurements show that an amount of 10 wt.% of Tiron is need to recover the SnO(2) nanoparticles surface with a monolayer. These nanoparticles can be easily redispersed in tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide at pH greater than or equal to11 until a powder concentration of 12 vol.% of tin. Under these conditions, hydrodynamic particle size is about 7 nm and increases until 52 nm at pH 6 due to the aggregation phenomenon. The time evolution of the viscoelastic properties indicates that the suspensions at pH 12.5, containing 12 vol.% tin oxide and 10 wt.% of surface modifier are kinetically stable. After thermal treatment at different temperature the powder characterisation evidences that the presence of Tiron monolayer at the nanoparticles surface increases the thermal stability of the porous texture and prevent the micropore size growth. This set of results contributes to satisfy the demand for more controlled synthesis of nanoparticles with high thermal stability as required for fabrication of ultrafiltration ceramic membranes. The Southwest region of the Bahia state in Brazil hosts the largest uranium reserve of the country (100 kton in uranium, only), plus the cities of Caetite, Lagoa Real and Igapora. In this work, aim was at the investigation of uranium burdens on residents of these cities by using teeth as bioindicators, as a contribution for possible radiation protection measures. Thus, a total of 41 human teeth were collected, plus 50 from an allegedly uranium free area (the control region). Concentrations of uranium in teeth from residents of 5- to 87-y old were determined by means of a high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The highest uranium concentration in teeth was measured from samples belonging to residents of Caetite (median equal to 16 ppb). Assuming that the uranium concentrations in teeth and bones are similar within 10-20% (for children and young adults), it concluded that uranium body levels in residents of Caetite are at least one order of magnitude higher than the worldwide average. This finding led to conclude that daily ingestion of uranium, from food and water, is equally high.

This work was carried out to evaluate the use of a hydrogel polymer in melon crop under different irrigation depths, with the objective of improve water retention, and efficiency of water and nutrient utilization by plants. One trial consisted of two treatments with four replications: a treatment with irrigation depth corresponding to 75% of gross depth and 27g of the soil conditioner per plant; the control with irrigation depth equal to the gross depth and without conditioner. The following characteristics were evaluated: root length, yield and quality of melon fruits. Root growth was bigger in the plants where soil conditioner was used. Use of soil conditioner provided an increase on melon yield and number of fruits per linear meter. Mean fruit weight and total soluble solids were not influenced by soil conditioner application and irrigation depth reduction.

The theory of vibronic transitions in rare earth compounds is re-examined in the light of a more reliable representation for the ligand field Hamiltonian than the crude electrostatic model. General expressions that take into account the relevant contributions from the forced electric dipole and dynamic coupling mechanisms are derived for the vibronic intensity parameters. These include additional terms, from charge and polarizability gradients, which have not been considered in previous work. Emphasis is given to the relative signs of these various contributions. Under certain approximations these expressions may be conveniently written in terms of accessible ligand field parameters. A comparison with experimental values for the compounds Cs2NaEuCl6 and LiEuF4 is made and satisfactory agreement between theory and experiment is found. A discussion is given on the sensitivity of the calculated intensities to the values of radial integrals, interconfigurational energy differences and ligand field parameters that may be used. Finally, the problem in which a vibronic and an electronic level are in resonance, or near resonance, is analyzed. Suitable expressions to describe the effects of the even-rank components of the vibronic Hamiltonian are obtained. It is found that, depending on the strength of the vibronic interaction and the resonance conditions, the admixture between these two levels may lead to intensities of nearly equal values. © 1995.

This paper represents the results of the work carried out in order to study the condition of seasonal consumer, the load factor and the more convenient tariff for a sugar mill located in the Vale do Paranapanema, SP, Brazil. Therefore, data of consume and registered demand were collected during the quadriennium 1990 to 1994. The studies showed that the factory did not maintain the condition of seasonal consumer of electric energy during the analysed period. Low values of the load factor observed in the period showed a non rational use of electric energy supplied by the concessionary. The results showed that only in one situation (load retired in top equal to 90%) the most convenient tariff is the horo-sazonal azul. In the other situations the most convenient tariff is the conventional one.
