Cerebral electrical impedance is useful for the detection of cerebral edema following hypoxia in newborn infants. Thus it may be useful for determining neurological outcome or monitoring treatment. Hypothermia is a promising new therapy currently undergoing trials, but will alter impedance measurements. This study aimed to define the relationship between temperature and both cerebral and whole body electrical impedance, and to derive correction factors for adjustment of impedance measurements during hypothermia. In eight anaesthetized 1-2 day old piglets rectal, tympanic and scalp temperatures were monitored continuously. Following baseline readings at a rectal temperature of 39degreesC, piglets were cooled to 32degreesC. Four piglets were re-warmed. Cerebral and whole body impedance were measured at each 0.5degreesC as rectal temperature decreased. There was a strong linear relationship between both cerebral and whole body impedance and each of the temperatures measured. There was no difference in the relationship between impedance and rectal, tympanic or scalp temperatures. The relationship for impedance and rectal temperature was the same during cooling and re-warming. Using the correction factors derived it will be possible to accurately monitor cerebral and whole body fluid distribution during hypothermic treatment.

Power systems are large scale nonlinear systems with high complexity. Various optimization techniques and expert systems have been used in power system planning. However, there are always some factors that cannot be quantified, modeled, or even expressed by expert systems. Moreover, such planning problems are often large scale optimization problems. Although computational algorithms that are capable of handling large dimensional problems can be used, the computational costs are still very high. To solve these problems, in this paper, investigation is made to explore the efficiency and effectiveness of combining mathematic algorithms with human intelligence. It had been discovered that humans can join the decision making progresses by cognitive feedback. Based on cognitive feedback and genetic algorithm, a new algorithm called cognitive genetic algorithm is presented. This algorithm can clarify and extract human's cognition. As an important application of this cognitive genetic algorithm, a practical decision method for power distribution system planning is proposed. By using this decision method, the optimal results that satisfy human expertise can be obtained and the limitations of human experts can be minimized in the mean time.

Deregulations and market practices in power industry have brought great challenges to the system planning area. In particular, they introduce a variety of uncertainties to system planning. New techniques are required to cope with such uncertainties. As a promising approach, probabilistic methods are attracting more and more attentions by system planners. In small signal stability analysis, generation control parameters play an important role in determining the stability margin. The objective of this paper is to investigate power system state matrix sensitivity characteristics with respect to system parameter uncertainties with analytical and numerical approaches and to identify those parameters have great impact on system eigenvalues, therefore, the system stability properties. Those identified parameter variations need to be investigated with priority. The results can be used to help Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs) and Independent System Operators (ISOs) perform planning studies under the open access environment.

A phased-array antenna with switched-beam elements used to combat interference in an indoor wireless communication system is described. The array uses I-bit phase shifters applied to its elements in order to point its main beam in a desired direction and internal switching of elements in order to form nulls towards interference. The array's capability of suppressing interference is verified by studying its radiation patterns and by performing interference-rejection experiments in an indoor multipath environment. An experimental study of a planar microwave imaging system with step-frequency synthesized pulse for possible use in medical applications is described. Simple phantoms, consisting of a cylindrical plastic container with air or oil imitating fatty tissues and small highly reflective objects emulating tumors, are scanned with a probe antenna over a planar surface in the X-band. Different calibration schemes are considered for successful detection of these objects. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The design of an ultra-wideband planar tapered slot antenna for use in a circular cylindrical microwave imaging system is pre-sented. The antenna was designed assuming high dielectric substrate material Rogers RT6010LM to achieve its compact size. The developed antenna element (50 X 50 mm(2)) features a 10-dB return loss bandwidth from 2.75 GHz to more than 11 GHz. The gain of the antenna is between 3.5 and 9.4 dBi over the 3-10 GHz band. The experimental tests showed that the manufactured antenna element supports transmission of narrow pulses with negligible distortions, as required in the microwave imaging system. We study the electrical transport of a harmonically bound, single-molecule C-60 shuttle operating in the Coulomb blockade regime, i.e. single electron shuttling. In particular, we examine the dependance of the tunnel current on an ultra-small stationary force exerted on the shuttle. As an example, we consider the force exerted on an endohedral N@C-60 by the magnetic field gradient generated by a nearby nanomagnet. We derive a Hamiltonian for the full shuttle system which includes the metallic contacts, the spatially dependent tunnel couplings to the shuttle, the electronic and motional degrees of freedom of the shuttle itself and a coupling of the shuttle's motion to a phonon bath. We analyse the resulting quantum master equation and find that, due to the exponential dependence of the tunnel probability on the shuttle-contact separation, the current is highly sensitive to very small forces. In particular, we predict that the spin state of the endohedral electrons of N@C-60 in a large magnetic gradient field can be distinguished from the resulting current signals within a few tens of nanoseconds. This effect could prove useful for the detection of the endohedral spin-state of individual paramagnetic molecules such as N@C-60 and P@C-60, or the detection of very small static forces acting on a C-60 shuttle.
