The improper disposal of industrial waste and exploitation of natural resources has resulted in the scarcity of river sand and environmental degradation, such as river erosions and pollution. This study aimed to assess the durability of mixed mortar lining walls and ceilings, containing 0 (default), 10 and 20% of dregs-grits compounds-waste of the pulp industry-in substitution with river sand. This was done with tests that simulated both natural and artificial conditions: Direct solar incidence (testing ultraviolet radiation), attack by spraying solution (salt spray test), natural warming of the walls and ceilings incidence by indirect solar (thermal degradation) and residential fires (thermogravimetric test), in compliance with both national and/or international standards. The grout containing dregs-grits compounds showed similarity to standard (0%) for testing thermal degradability, thermogravimetric and ultraviolet radiation, but shows significantly less durability when exposed to salty environments.

The landuse is usually an human phenomenon that occurs over the years, due to population increase. The territorial knowledge is needed, and is the first step for environmental planning to implement conservation practices on agricultural production system. This study aimed to develop thematic maps as: hydrography, soil, slope, land use, and subbasins to obtain the main geomorphic morphometric data (physical) of the Córrego Rico Watershed. The techniques of remote sensing and geographic information system were used to elaborate the maps and for calculating the geomorphological data, as area, altitude and length of the drainage net, which were submitted to multivariate statistics. The Córrego Rico Watershed has an area of 563 km2 . The predominant slopes were 3-8%, with 55.3% of the total area; and the main use was sugar cane. The soils that predominate in the area are Oxisols towards the Mogi-Guaçú river mouth and Ultisols at the upstream of the basin.

O presente estudo visa demonstrar a utilização do diário de campo em pesquisas realizadas em contexto natural sob a perspectiva do modelo bioecológico de Bronfenbrenner. Para efeito de ilustração, são apresentados dados que fizeram parte da pesquisa de mestrado da primeira autora sobre as percepções de uma família com uma criança com deficiência intelectual no contexto ribeirinho amazônico. Após a coleta das informações, os dados foram organizados com base nos conceitos propostos por Bronfenbrenner. O diário de campo permitiu o aprofundamento das análises em que foram contemplados tanto os aspectos contextuais (cultura ribeirinha amazônica), como os pessoais (características biossociopsicológicas da criança/pais) e os processuais (relações, papéis familiares e atividades compartilhadas). Os dados são discutidos considerando a contribuição do diário de campo nas pesquisas que investigam famílias em seu contexto.

If riparian buffer zones are ineffective in preventing C-4 plant carbon from upland areas reaching the stream sediment, the composition of stream fauna can be significantly altered. The permeability of riparian forest strips in agricultural, small subtropical watersheds in south-eastern Brazil was measured in nine watersheds categorised according to the predominant land cover of the legally required 30-m buffer riparian zone. Four watersheds with well preserved riparian forest along the 30-m buffer zone were designated as FOREST watersheds; three watersheds, with a predominance of C-4 grasses from sugarcane to pasture, mixed with preserved riparian forests, were designated MIXED watersheds; and two watersheds were termed PASTURE-SUGAR because their entire 30-m buffer zone was covered by C-4 plants. Stable carbon (delta C-13) isotopes were used as tracers of upland C-4 carbon in sediments, suspended particulate organic carbon, terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates and two species of neotropical fish. Although the intact 30-m buffer zone of riparian forests did not entirely prevent the input of C-4 to the river environment and food web, there was a significant increase in C-4 carbon in those watersheds where the buffer zone was not covered by riparian forests. These findings emphasise the importance of riparian forests in mitigating disturbance in streams and support efforts to preserve such riparian corridors.

In the present study, mitochondrial (mt)DNA sequence data were used to examine the genetic structure of fire-eye antbirds (genus Pyriglena) along the Atlantic Forest and the predictions derived from the river hypothesis and from a Last Glacial Maximum Pleistocene refuge paleomodel were compared to explain the patterns of genetic variation observed in these populations. A total of 266 individuals from 45 populations were sampled over a latitudinal transect and a number of phylogeographical and population genetics analytical approaches were employed to address these questions. The pattern of mtDNA variation observed in fire-eye antbirds provides little support for the view that populations were isolated by the modern course of major Atlantic Forest rivers. Instead, the data provide stronger support for the predictions of the refuge model. These results add to the mounting evidence that climatic oscillations appear to have played a substantial role in shaping the phylogeographical structure and possibly the diversification of many taxa in this region. However, the results also illustrate the potential for more complex climatic history and historical changes in the geographical distribution of Atlantic Forest than envisioned by the refuge model. A crescente atividade agrícola em áreas de mananciais tem causado preocupações quanto à contaminação por herbicidas em áreas agrícolas. O problema se torna mais importante quando a contaminação pode afetar a água para uso humano, como ocorre com a água do Rio Poxim, que abastece a cidade de Aracaju, capital do Estado de Sergipe. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o risco de contaminação de águas superficiais e subterrâneas por herbicidas no alto da Sub-bacia do Rio Poxim e detectar a presença dos princípios ativos Diuron e Ametrina, à montante das plantações de cana-de-açúcar. A análise de risco foi realizada mediante critérios da Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), índice de GUS e método de GOSS. Observou-se que vários princípios ativos sofrem risco de lixiviação, demonstrando a importância do monitoramento do rio para controle tanto da qualidade da água como da frequência e volume de herbicidas aplicado na região. A partir do resultado, foi realizado um monitoramento bimensal de julho de 2009 a julho de 2010, em dois pontos de amostragem. As amostras de água foram analisadas em laboratório, onde se, constatou a presença de Diuron e Ametrina. A qualidade da água na Sub-bacia do Rio Poxim está sendo influenciada pelo uso de herbicidas na região. Ocorreu um aumento nas concentrações dos herbicidas na água superficial, durante o período chuvoso, provocado possivelmente pelo escoamento superficial.

[EN] This paper deals with the relief generation in Ourense, an interior territory of the Galicia Country, at NW Spain, after the breakdown of Pangea 200 million years ago. The rupture of supercontinent causes the main effects in the outer part of Galicia, the present coast line and the shelf, but also the inner parts of Galicia where the landscape changes dramatically mainly ruled by fluvial incision connected with uprising, (orogenic, epirogenic, or isostatic origin), or even with eustatic oscillations, that shaped the previous old mesozoic landscape. Various things complicate the correct understanding of Galician geomorphology:1) the prevalent hercynian structure, (presumably reactivated during the Alpine Orogeny), causes that the epigenic processes, (fluvial, glaciar, marine and etching), acting on Galicia from Mesozoic to present times, produce end forms identified erroneously at the previous literature as tectonic and not as etch forms profiting from lithological or structural contrasts. 2) the common morphotectonic model accepted by all previous researchers establishes for the whole of Galicia a blocky pattern, (horst and graben like), due to extensional tectonic regime. This model is proved as no longer valid because the Galician tertiary basins, even were described at the past as graben depressions never have this origin. 3) big differences exist between the north and western sides of Galicia that show contrasted tectonic regime: compressional (with forms as the so called raised platforms), at the northern coast border, and extensional (with forms so typical as the Rias), at the western side. The study area is located at the confluence of two tectonic domains where the above mentioned effects are coincidents and specially well showed through different effects: prominent assimetry of fluvial captures (west facing), pronounced river incision and different kinds of tertiary basins: either strike slipe faults (Maceda, Xinzo de Limia, etc), or overslipped by inverse faults, (Quiroga, A Rúa, etc.), or even corresponding with depressions never, (or anywise passively), affected by tectonic movements, (Monforte). The paper include a detailed inventory of surfaces and terrace levels and their incision sequence which allow stablish a relative chronology of geomorphic evolution at this area of NW Spain during meso-cainozoic times.

[ES] Se presenta la cartografía geomorfológica y el análisis de cuatro formaciones superficiales que recubren algunos sectores de los Llanos de Castro Caldelas, una planicie topográficamente aislada por el profundo encajamiento de la red fluvial del río Sil y por la falla de Maceda, de edad alpina. Sobre este replano erosivo se ha identificado una red fluvial fosil, parcialmente capturada por el río Sil y varios niveles de terrazas erosivas que corresponden al desmantelamiento del replano inicial R1000. La relación entre morfologías y depósitos permitió elaborar una secuencia de procesos desencadenada por un pulso tectónico que descabaló el replano R800 y produjo el levantamiento relativo de los Llanos de Castro Caldelas y otras áreas adyacentes

The Calabrian-Peloritani arc represents key site to unravel evolution of surface processes on top of subducting lithosphere. During the Pleistocene, in fact the arc uplifted at rate of the order of about 1mm/yr, forming high-standing low-relief upland (figure 2). Our study is focused on the relationship between tectonic and land evolution in the Sila Massif, Messina strait and Peloritani Mts. Landforms reflect a competition between tectonic, climatic, and surficial processes. Many landscape evolution models that explore feedbacks between these competing processes, given steady forcing, predict a state of erosional equilibrium, where the rates of river incision and hillslope erosion balance rock uplift. It has been suggested that this may be the final constructive stage of orogenic systems. Assumptions of steady erosion and incision are used in the interpretation of exhumation and uplift rates from different geologic data, and in the formulation of fluvial incision and hillslope evolution models. In the Sila massif we carried out cosmogenic isotopes analysis on 24 samples of modern fluvial sediments to constrain long-term (~103 yr) erosion rate averaged on the catchment area. 35 longitudinal rivers profiles have been analyzed to study the tectonic signal on the landscape evolution. The rivers analyzed exhibit a wide variety of profile forms, diverging from equilibrium state form. Generally the river profiles show at least 2 and often 3 distinct concave-up knickpoint-bounded segments, characterized by different value of concavity and steepness indices. River profiles suggest three main stages of incision. The values of ks and θ in the lower segments evidence a decrease in river incision, due probably to increasing uplift rate. The cosmogenic erosion rates pointed out that old landscape upland is eroding slowly at ~0.1 mm/yr. In the contrary, the flanks of the massif is eroding faster with value from 0.4 to 0.5 mm/yr due to river incision and hillslope processes. Cosmogenic erosion rates mach linearly with steepness indices and with average hillslope gradient. In the Messina area the long term erosion rate from low-T thermochronometry are of the same order than millennium scale cosmogenic erosion rate (1-2 mm/yr). In this part of the chain the fast erosion is active since several million years, probably controlled by extensional tectonic regime. In the Peloritani Mts apatite fission-track and (U-Th)/He thermochronometry are applied to constraint the thermal history of the basement rock. Apatite fission-track ages range between 29.0±5.5 and 5.5±0.9 Ma while apatite (U-Th)/He ages vary from 19.4 to 1.0 Ma. Most of the AFT ages are younger than the overlying terrigenous sequence that in turn postdates the main orogenic phase. Through the coupling of the thermal modelling with the stratigraphic record, a Middle Miocene thermal event due to tectonic burial is unravel. This event affected a inner-intermediate portion of the Peloritani belt confined by young AFT data (<15 Ma) distribution. We interpret this thermal event as due to an out-of–sequence thrusting occurring in the inner portion of the belt. Young (U-Th)/He ages (c. 5 Ma) record a final exhumation stage with increasing rates of denudation since the Pliocene times due to postorogenic extensional tectonics and regional uplift. In the final chapter we change the spatial scale to insert digital topography analysis and field data within a geodynamic model that can explain surface evidence produced by subduction process.

Il progetto propone uno studio per verificare la fattibilita' di un piano territoriale (ideato per il bacino del Po ma di fatto estendibile a tutti i bacini fluviali) per la creazione di una filiera di colture bioenergetiche (biomasse) che, trasportate per mezzo della navigazione fluviale (uno dei mezzi di trasporto a minore emissione di CO2), alimentino una o piu' centrali a nuova tecnologia che associno alla produzione di calore (teleriscaldamento e raffreddamento) e di energia la separazione dei fumi. La CO2 catturata dalla crescita delle biomasse e recuperata dalla combustione, puo' quindi essere segregata nel sottosuolo di aree costiere subsidenti contrastando il fenomeno dellâabbassamento del suolo. Ricavando benefici in tutti i passaggi di attuazione del piano territoriale (lancio dell'agricoltura bioenergetica, rilancio della navigazione a corrente libera, avvio di una economia legata alla logistica del trasporto e dello stoccaggio delle biomasse, generazione di energia pulita, lotta alla subsidenza) il progetto, di fatto, consente di catturare ingenti quantitativi di CO2 dall'atmosfera e di segregarli nel sottosuolo, riducendo l'effetto serra. Nel corso del Dottorato e' stata sviluppata una metodologia di valutazione della sostenibilita' economica ed ambientale del progetto ad un bacino fluviale, che consta di una modulistica di raccolta dei dati di base e di una procedura informatizzata di analisi.

Zusammenfassung: Freizeitaktivitäten wie Mountainbiking, Sportklettern, Drachen- und Gleitschirmfliegen oder Windsur-fen sind relativ neue Erscheinungen der letzten fünfzehn bis fünfundzwanzig Jahre. Ihre Entwicklung und Ausdifferenzierung beschränkt sich vor allem auf Gesellschaften westlich-industrieller Prägung, deren Grundlage ein funktional differenziertes Gesellschaftssystem ist. Mit Hilfe des Beobachtungsin-strumentes der neueren soziologischen Systemtheorie wird zunächst das Aufkommen und die immer fortschreitende Ausdifferenzierung von Trend- und Natursportarten analysiert und gedeutet. Es zeigt sich, daß diese neuen Freizeitaktivitäten über den Zugriff auf die eigene Körperlichkeit in hohem Ma-ße zur Identitätsfindung der Individuen solcher Gesellschaftssysteme beitragen.Aus geographischer Sicht stellt sich die Frage nach der Bedeutung dieser Entwicklung für die Land-schaft. Dabei wird Landschaft explizit nicht als etwas verstanden, daß 'an sich' existiert, sondern als etwas, das 'erlebt' oder 'begriffen', also immer wieder aufs Neue im Auge des Betrachters konstru-iert wird. Für die Sporttreibenden von Trend- und Natursportarten ist der Blick auf die Welt durch ihre Sportart strukturiert. Jedenfalls immer dann, wenn es darum geht, eine Sportstätte für ihre jeweilige Sportausübung auszuwählen. Die Naturlandschaft (oder auch Kulturlandschaft) wird damit zur 'Sportlandschaft'. Der Begriff der 'Landschaft' erscheint dann im Sinne Werlens 'alltäglichen Geo-graphie-Machens' als eine permanent neu zu erstellende und damit sich auch ständig verändernde Perspektive auf die Objektwelt. So kann sich im Auge der Sporttreibenden von Trend- und Natur-sportarten jedes Objekt und jede Landschaft, wenn man so will: die Welt, als ein einziger großer Sportplatz darstellen.Wenn also alles potentiell eine Sportstätte sein kann, stellt sich die Frage, wie es zur Herausbildung sogenannter Top Spots kommt, also zu jenen Sportstätten, die innerhalb der jeweiligen Sportart von herausragender Bedeutung sind - sozusagen die oberste Sprosse der Karriereleiter erklommen haben - und an der jeder gewesen sein muß, der innerhalb der sportartspezifischen Szene etwas gelten will. Dieser Frage wird anhand eines Fallbeispiels nachgegangen. Als Grundlage wurde ein Untersu-chungsgebiet gewählt, das sich bereits in einem fortgeschrittenen Stadium der Entwicklung zu einem Top Spot befindet - eine Landschaft also, die bereits eine 'Karriere als Sportlandschaft' aufzuweisen hat. Die peripher gelegene US-amerikanische Kleinstadt Moab in Südost-Utah (ca. 5.000 Einwohner) hat sich seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre zu einem internationalen Szene-Treffpunkt für Mountainbiking entwickelt. Zu dem wichtigsten Mountainbike-Trail (dem Slickrock Bike Trail) kommen pro Jahr al-lein mehr als 200.000 Mountainbike-TouristInnen. Neben dem Mountainbiking spielt River Rafting eine bedeutende Rolle im Tourismus und es hat sich dort in den letzten Jahren außerdem eine kleine Sportkletter-Szene etabliert, die in den nächsten Jahren sicherlich noch an Bedeutung zunehmen wird.
