Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are largely employed in Dentistry for several applications, such as luting cements for the attachment of crowns, bridges, and orthodontic brackets as well as restorative materials. The development of new glass systems is very important in Dentistry to improve of the mechanical properties and chemical stability. The aim of this study is the preparation of two glass systems containing niobium in their compositions for use as GICs. Glass systems based on the composition SiO2,Al2O3-Nb2O5-CaO were prepared by chemical route at 700degreesC. The XRD and DTA results confirmed that the prepared materials are glasses. The structures of the obtained glasses were compared to commercial material using FTIR, Al-27 and Si-29 MAS-NMR. The analysis of FTIR and MAS-NMR spectra indicated that the systems developed and commercial material are formed by SiO4 and AlO4 linked tetrahedra. These structures are essential to get the set time control and to have cements. These results encourage further applications of the experimental glasses in the formation of GICs. The enthalpy-entropy compensation theory was applied to water sorption for grapes of Italy variety. The moisture sorption isotherms were analyzed using the static gravimetric method at 35, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 75 degrees C. For isotherms construction, the skin and pulp of the grape were used separately and it was possible to observe significant differences. The GAB equation was fitted to the experimental data, using direct nonlinear regression analysis; the agreement between experimental and calculated values was satisfactory. The net isosteric heat or enthalpy of water sorption, determined from the equilibrium sorption data, showed a different behavior when compared with other works, as it was obtained for skin and pulp separately. Plots of Delta h vs Delta S for skin and pulp provided the isokinetic temperatures T-Bs = 423.2 +/- 27.6 K and T-Bp = 424.5 +/- 25.3 K, respectively, indicating an enthalpy-controlled desorption process over the whole range of moisture content considered.

Pressure drop and minimum fluidization velocity were experimentally studied in a vibro-fluidized bed of inert particles subjected to different vibration intensities during drying of soursop pulp. Maltodextrin was added to the pulp in order to prevent stickiness between particles and the consequent bed collapse. Pulps were initially concentrated, resulting in pastes with different soluble solids content, and a constant fraction of maltodextrin was guaranteed in the final pulp samples. The pulp theological behavior as affected by temperature and total soluble solids content, including maltodextrin, was evaluated and the effect of pulp apparent viscosity on pressure drop and minimum vibro-fluidization velocity were investigated. Two types of inert particles -3.6 mm glass beads and 3 mm Teflon cylinders (length and diameter) - were tested and, due to lower pressure drop presented by Teflon cylinders during operation of the dry vibro-fluidized bed, these particles were adopted for pulp drying process. Increasing pulp apparent viscosity caused a considerable increase in the vibro-fluidized bed pressure drop during pulp drying and, as a consequence resulted in a larger value of minimum vibro-fluidization velocity. on the other hand, the negative effect of increasing apparent viscosity could be attenuated by increasing the fluidized bed vibration intensity, which could prevent stickiness between particles.
