The objective of this study was to evaluate pig fasting time at the farm (FT= 9, 12, 15 or 18 hours) and pig position into the pig lorry compartment on pork quality through liquid drip loss (DLL), pH1 evaluated at 45 minutes post slaughter and pHu evaluated 24 hours post slaughter. One hundred ninety two females, weighing 133±11 kg, from two farms were used. Pig locations were evaluated on truck compartment considering front, middle and rear (TCL) position and top or botton decks (LUD). The following effects were considered in the statistical model: block (BL= farm), FT, TCL, LUD and the interaction between BL and FT. The FT affected significantly the pH1 of Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle, and pHu of Semispinalis capitis (SC), Longissimus dorsi (LD) and Semimembranosus (SM) muscles. Fasting time at farm equal or shorter than 12 hours resulted in carcasses with lower pHu values at LD and SM muscles and fasting time above 15 hours resulted in higher pHu on SC. There were no observed effect (p>0.05) of the evaluated sources of variation on DLL. TCL affected pH1 of SC, LD and SM muscles, and pHu of LD and SM muscles. Pigs located in middle or rear position in the lorry had no difference in pH1 of the evaluated muscles. But pigs located in the middle position of the lorry had greater values of pHu on LD and SM. It is stated that pigs fasting time at farm need to be close to 15 hours in aim of obtain higher frequency of pHu values in the normal range (5.55

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential risk of moniliasis occurrence and the impacts of climate change on this disease in the coming decades, should this pathogen be introduced in Brazil. To this end, climate favorability maps were devised for the occurrence of moniliasis, both for the present and future time. The future scenarios (A2 and B2) focused on the decades of 2020, 2050 and 2080. These scenarios were obtained from six global climate models (GCMs) made available by the third assessment report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Currently, there are large areas with favorable climate conditions for moniliasis in Brazil, especially in regions at high risk of introduction of that pathogen. Considering the global warming scenarios provided by the IPCC, the potential risk of moniliasis occurrence in Brazil will be reduced. This decrease is predicted for both future scenarios, but will occur more sharply in scenario A2. However, there will still be areas with favorable climate conditions for the development of the disease, particularly in Brazil's main producing regions. Moreover, pathogen and host alike may undergo alterations due to climate change, which will affect the extent of their impacts on this pathosystem.

The use of cover crops in the soil causes changes in soil attributes influencing in a series of hydro-physical processes, which also modify the ability of soil to support the many activities that it is intended. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cover crops on physical attributes of the soil. For this, an experiment was carried out on a Typic Hapludox, Jaboticabal State, Brazil, using cover crops of millet, sunn hemp, jack bean, lab-lab and black velvet bean in no-tillage and fallow area (spontaneous vegetation). The characteristics evaluated were the bulk density, macroporosity, microporosity, total porosity, aggregate stability, penetration resistance and organic matter. The incorporation of cover crops has proved to be a beneficial practice for the physical attributes of the soil, allowing a greater aggregate stability compared to fallow in the depth of 0-0.05 m. All cover crops presented values of soil penetration resistance below the critical value of 2 MPa.

The main goal of this study was to investigate the influence of fear of fall and dual task on electromyographic and kinematic variability parameters on the gait of older females. Seventeen college students (21,47 ± 2,06 years old) and eighteen older female adults, both groups were physically fit and performed the gait test on three different conditions: walking at self-select speed, fear of fall and dual task. Electromyographic activity was measured on muscles of dominant leg and stride time was recorded. ANOVA two-way (p<0.05) was used. Electromyographic and kinematic gait variability were higher in older adult groups. However, for the comparison between gait conditions was only found significant difference for electromyographic variability. In line with this, the higher EMG and kinematic variability in older adults suggest that aging contributes for a higher motor challenge while walking, which may be predispose these individuals a higher risk of fall.

The tomato cultivation in the greenhouse has been expanded in the last years, mainly, in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, whose purpose is to improve the productivity and the quality of the agricultural products, offering regularity in the production. The present study aimed to determine, along the crop cycle, the relationship between the leaf area index and the productivity, and at the end of the cycle, the components of production of the tomato in the greenhouse. The models were generated through polynomial equations of 1st and 2nd order, having as independent variable the number of days after the transplanting. It was verified that it is possible to determine, in the greenhouse, through mathematical models, the leaf area index of the tomato crop considering the days after the transplanting. Basing on values of leaf area index, the productivity of the crop and the period of the maximum productivity can be determined, aiding the farmers to determine the best sowing and transplanting time of the tomato crop.

In sprinkler irrigation is important to have a good uniformity of application so that the water in the root zone does not show areas with little available water while others have percolating beyond the plant roots, even though the soil allows a lateral redistribution of water. A usual way to obtain the uniformity of irrigation is by measures of dispersion. The aim of this work was to evaluate the uniformity of water stored in a sand soil before and after non uniformity depth irrigation applied from one sprinkler, as well the variation of storage in a 0-0,45 m layer soil using a neutron probe. The statistical design was completely randomized, and for the variable Christiansen uniformity coefficient modified (CUCHH) were 10 treatments (the irrigation depth, 8 intervals of readings storage, more the existing one before irrigation added to the irrigation depth). For the variable soil water, the treatments were the same, excepting the irrigation depth. Despite the low surface uniformity (16.3%), there was not significantly difference between the storage uniformity before, after irrigation and the potential, however there was from these to the surface uniformity. From de irrigation depth, 15.3 mm, only 6.1 mm remained in the layer from 0 to 0.45 m. There was not significantly difference between the water stored in the soil before and after irrigation within a period of up to 134 hours, being the increase in storage due to irrigation was just 11.7%.

The objective was to evaluate the internal quality of white-shelled consume eggs, sanitized or not, stored under different packaging conditions at room temperature. It was used 300 eggs, distributed in a completely randomized experimental design in a 3×2×4+1 factorial arrangement, three packaging conditions (PVC film, partial vacuum, partial vacuum with oxygen gas absorber), storage period (7, 14, 21 and 28 days), sanitized or not, and control (fresh eggs), with four repetitions. At the end of each period the analysis were performed. Partial vacuum condition was able to maintained Haugh unit, and promoted the best results for yolk index. The weight maintenance was better when packaged under vacuum, with or without O2 sachets absorbers. Lower values of water activity were obtained in eggs packed in PVC film, and when the sanitation was performed. It can be concluded that the internal egg quality decreases with storage time sharper in the eggs packed in PVC film, because vacuum has preserved some features of them. With sanitation, the storage conditions of eggs in PVC film should be improved because its internal quality decrease was greatest.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of inclusion of betaine in broiler diets on performance and intestinal morphology of broilers during periods 1 to 7 and 8 to 21 days old. Were used 1,408 Cobb male broiler, randomly assigned into 4 treatments with 16 replicates of 22 birds in environmental chambers. The treatments were: i) positive control - diet formulated according to the nutritional requirements of the birds; ii) negative control - with reduction levels of methionine and choline; iii) negative control + 0.092% supplementation of betaine in substitution of methionine and total choline; iv) negative control + 0.1% supplementation of natural betaine to replace partial methionine and total choline. Were evaluated feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion at 7 and 21 days old. At 25 days were evaluated crypt height and depth of jejunum. The results were analyzed by ANOVA and mean comparison test. The results obtained with the supplementation of betaine in the feed only demonstrated a positive effect on feed consumption during 1 to 7 days, and villous height of the jejunum in the period of 8 to 21 days. Supplementation of 0.1% betafin (96% natural betaine) in the diet provided significant improvements in the morphological characteristics of the small intestine of broilers.
