2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) aerobic degrading granules were successfully developed in the sequencing batch airlift reactor. The key strategy used in cultivation of the granules was dosing glucose and acetate as co-substrates. After granulation, average concentrations of 2,4,6-TCP and COD in the effluent were less than 8mgL-1 and 59mgL-1, respectively. The removal efficiencies of 2,4,6-TCP and COD were above 93% and 90%, respectively. The specific degradation rate of 2,4,6-TCP peaked at 61mg 2,4,6-TCP gVSS-1h-1 when inoculated at the concentration of 400mgL-1. The extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) contents of the 2,4,6-TCP aerobic degrading granules were decreased compared with the contents in seed sludge. Two peaks attributed to the protein-like fluorophores were identified by three-dimensional excitation emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectra. The decrease of fluorescence parameters, e.g., peak locations, intensities, indicated quenching effect of 2,4,6-TCP on the EPS fluorescence. Meanwhile, the shift of peak position indicated chemical changes of the EPS.

The structure, energy and bonding property of TixCy clusters formed in iron matrix were studied through molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. The initial clusters with 1D-linear, 2D-ring, and 3D-tetrahedral structures were determined and their stability was calculated. The effect of temperature on the stability of the clusters was also discussed. In addition, the dissociation path of TiC clusters in iron matrix and the corresponding energy variation were analyzed. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Synthesis and complete characterization of some ester functionalized vinylic tellurides bearing an aryl ligand with varying steric and electronic effects bound to tellurium is described. Hydrotelluration of methyl propiolate using Ar2Te2/NaBH4 in methanol results in a mixture of stereoisomers of methyl β-(aryltelluro)acrylates, ArTeCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCOOMe (Ar = 4-MeOC6H4, 1A; 1-C10H7, 2A; 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, 3A; C5H5FeC5H4, 4A; 4-Me2NC6H4, 5A; and 2-C4H3S, 6A). The same reaction in ethanol provides isomeric mixtures of the ethyl esters ArTeCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCOOEt (1B–6B). However, in the reactions between methyl propiolate and Ar2Te2 (Ar = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, 4-Me2NC6H4) in isopropanol or t-butanol, no exchange of alkyl groups between the parent ester and the solvent is observed, instead detelluration of the Ar2Te2 to Ar2Te is a competing reaction along with almost exclusive formation of the (Z)-isomers (3Aa, 5Aa). The geometry of the separated stereoisomers is established in solution, with the help of 1H, 13C and 125Te NMR spectrometry. Of particular interest is the observation that 125Te chemical shifts {deshielded in (Z) compared to (E); Δδ = 106–136 ppm} and the geminal heteronuclear coupling constants {2J(1H–125Te) values for (E) are more than seven times that of the corresponding (Z) isomer} can be used to distinguish between liquid isomers. Structural characterization in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction for the 2Ba, 3Aa, 3Ba, 5Aa, 8 (Z)-isomers as well as for both stereoisomers of 4-Me2NC6H4TeCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCOOEt (5Ba and 5Bb) is also presented. The carbonyl O atom of the ester group is invariably involved, at least in the solid state, in a secondary bonding interaction with the Te(II) atom. While an intermolecular Te⋯O interaction gives rise to one-dimensional supramolecular arrays in the crystal lattice of 5Bb with (E) configuration, it is realized intramolecularly in the case of the (Z)-isomers due to the cis position of the chalcogen atoms.

This study characterizes the extracellular polymeric substances and bacterial community composition of aerobic granules exposed to cefalexin (CLX). The presence of CLX potentially decreases granular stabilities, resulting in a lowered granule diameter. Chemical oxygen demand and NH4+-N removal efficiencies were slightly decreased and the denitrification process was inhibited with CLX addition. Extracellular polymeric substance contents were significantly increased in aerobic granules exposed to CLX. The shifts of fluorescence intensities and peak locations in 3D-EEM fluorescence spectra indicated changes of EPS components. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed aerobic granules with CLX addition in synthetic wastewater had superior diversity of microbial species, and this was the reason that the level and components of EPS changed. The species richness for bacteria was increased from 341 to 352, which was revealed by Chao1. The Shannon index of diversity rose slightly from 3.59 to 3.73 with CLX addition. The abundance of Proteobacteria significantly decreased, while the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Chloroflexi underwent a highly significant increase in aerobic granules exposed to CLX.

Semiconducting GaN and Gax In1-x N nanoparticles (4-10 nm in diameter, depending on the metal ratio) with tunable indium content are prepared through a chemical synthesis (the urea-glass route). The bandgap of the ternary system depends on its composition, and therefore, the color of the final material can be turned from bright yellow (the color of pure GaN) to blue (the color of pure InN). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM and HRTEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images confirm the nanoparticle character and homogeneity of the as-prepared samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron diffraction (EDX), elemental mapping, and UV/Vis, IR, and Raman spectroscopy investigations are used to confirm the incorporation of indium into the crystal structure of GaN. These nanoparticles, possessing adjusted optical properties, are expected to have potential applications in the fabrication of novel optoelectronic devices.

Sea anemones contain a variety of biologically active substances. Bunodosoma caissarum is a sea anemone from the Cnidaria phylum, found only in Brazilian coastal waters. The aim of the present work was to study the biological effects of PLA(2) isolated from the sea anemone B. caissarum on the isolated perfused kidney, the arteriolar mesenteric bed and on insulin secretion. Specimens of B. caissarum were collected from the Sao Vicente Channel on the southern coast of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Reverse phase HPLC analysis of the crude extract of B. caissarum detected three PLA(2) proteins (named BcPLA(2)1, BCPLA(2)2 and BcPLA(2)3) found to be active in B. caissarum extracts. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry of BcPLA(2)1 showed one main peak at 14.7 kDa. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of BcPLA(2)1 showed high amino acid sequence identity with PLA(2) group III protein isolated from the Mexican lizard (PA23 HELSU, HELSU, PA22 HELSU) and with the honey bee Apis mellifera (PLA(2) and 1POC_A). In addition, BcPLA(2)1 also showed significant overall homology to bee PLA(2). The enzymatic activity induced by native BCPLA(2)1 (20 mu g/well) was reduced by chemical treatment with p-bromophenacyl bromide (p-BPB) and with morin. BcPLA(2)1 strongly induced insulin secretion in presence of high glucose concentration. In isolated kidney, the PLA(2) from B. caissarum increased the perfusion pressure, renal vascular resistance, urinary flow, glomerular filtration rate, and sodium, potassium and chloride levels of excretion. BcPLA(2)1, however, did not increase the perfusion pressure on the mesenteric vascular bed. In conclusion, PLA(2), a group III phospholipase isolated from the sea anemone B. caissarum, exerted effects on renal function and induced insulin secretion in conditions of high glucose concentration. The synthesis of a poly(azo)urethane by fixing CO2 in bis-epoxide followed by a polymerization reaction with an azodiamine is presented. Since isocyanate is not used in the process, it is termed clean method and the polymers obtained are named NIPUs (non-isocyanate polyurethanes). Langmuir films were formed at the air-water interface and were characterized by surface pressure vs mean molecular area per met unit (Pi-A) isotherms. The Langmuir monolayers were further studied by running stability tests and cycles of compression/expansion (possible hysteresis) and by varying the compression speed of the monolayer formation, the subphase temperature, and the solvents used to prepare the spreading polymer solutions. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique was used to fabricate ultrathin films of a particular polymer (PAzoU). It is possible to grow homogeneous LB films of up to 15 layers as monitored using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Higher number of layers can be deposited when PAzoU is mixed with stearic acid, producing mixed LB films. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectroscopy and Raman scattering showed that the materials do not interact chemically in the mixed LB films. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) and micro-Raman technique (optical microscopy coupled to Raman spectrograph) revealed that mixed LB films present a phase separation distinguishable at micrometer or nanometer scale. Finally, mixed and neat LB films were successfully characterized using impedance spectroscopy at different temperatures, a property that may lead to future application as temperature sensors. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to correlate the data.
