Setf-supported asymmetric hollow-fiber membranes of mixed oxygen-ionic and electronic conducting perovskite Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCF) were prepared by a combined phase-inversion and sintering technique. The starting inorganic powder was synthesized by combined EDTA-citrate complexing process followed by thermal treatment at 600 degrees C. The powder was dispersed in a polymer solution and then extruded into hollow-fiber precursors through a spinneret. ne fiber precursors were sintered at elevated temperatures to form gastight membranes, which were characterized by SEM and gas permeation tests. Performance of the hollow fibers in air separation was both experimentally and theoretically studied at various conditions. The results reveal that the oxygen permeation process was controlled by the slow oxygen surface exchange kinetics under the investigated conditions. The porous inner surface of the prepared perovskite hollow-fiber membranes considerably favored the oxygen permeation. The maximum oxygen flux measured was 0.031 mol-m(-2).s(-1) at 950 degrees C with the sweep gas flow rate of 0.522 mol(.)m(-2).s(-1). To improve the oxygen flux of BSCF perovskite membranes, future work should be focused on surface modification rather than reduction of the membrane thickness. The 'moving targets' algorithm for training recurrent networks is reviewed and applied to a task which demonstrates the ability of this algorithm to use distant contextual information. Some practical difficulties are discussed, especially with regard to the minimization process. Results on performance and computational requirements of several different 2nd-order minimization algorithms are presented for moving target problems.

A simple method for training the dynamical behavior of a neural network is derived. It is applicable to any training problem in discrete-time networks with arbitrary feedback. The algorithm resembles back-propagation in that an error function is minimized using a gradient-based method, but the optimization is carried out in the hidden part of state space either instead of, or in addition to weight space. Computational results are presented for some simple dynamical training problems, one of which requires response to a signal 100 time steps in the past.

A simple method for training the dynamical behavior of a neural network is derived. It is applicable to any training problem in discrete-time networks with arbitrary feedback. The method resembles back-propagation in that it is a least-squares, gradient-based optimization method, but the optimization is carried out in the hidden part of state space instead of weight space. A straightforward adaptation of this method to feedforward networks offers an alternative to training by conventional back-propagation. Computational results are presented for simple dynamical training problems, with varied success. The failures appear to arise when the method converges to a chaotic attractor. A patch-up for this problem is proposed. The patch-up involves a technique for implementing inequality constraints which may be of interest in its own right.

The development of ideas and theories concerning the structure of glazes, as one of the glassy materials, are reviewed in the general introduction. The raw materials and the manufacturing process for glazes are described (Chapter One). A number of new vanadyl(IV) dipyridylamine and tripyrldylamine complexes have been prepared, various spectroscopic techniques are used in the investigation of the vanadyl ion in a weak ligand field, the situation of those found in a glaze environment (Chapter Three). In glaze recipes containing silica, potash feldspar, china clay, MO(M= Ca, Sr, Sa, Ti and Zn) and NiO, the ligand field theory is used in the elucidation of the effect of M (in MO) on the absorption spectra and coordination behaviour of Ni(II) in glazes. The magnetic and visible spectral results are reviewed in terms of Dietzel's idea of field strength of M and also in terms of Shteinberg's theory of glaze structure. X-ray diffraction is used for the identification of various species that formed after the firing process of glazes (Chapter Four). In Chapter Five, [] Mossbauer spectroscopy, supplemented by E.S.R., X-ray and visible spectral measurements are used in the investigation of iron in a glaze composition similar to that used in Chapter Four. The Mossbauer results are used in following the influence of; M in MO (M= Sr, Ca and Ba), oxides of titanium(IV) and vanadium(V ), and firing conditions on the chemistry of iron. Generally the iron(II) and iron(III) in the fired glazes are in octahedral sites although there are a range of similar, though not identical environments. A quite noticable influence of M (in MO) on the resonance line width is seen. In one case evidence is found for iron(IV) in an iron/vanadium glaze. E.S.R. of vanadium containing glazes indicate that vanadium is present as V02+ in a highly distorted tetragonal environment .

Tuberculosis (TB) is an escalating global health problem and improved vaccines against TB are urgently needed. HLA-E restricted responses may be of interest for vaccine development since HLA-E displays very limited polymorphism (only 2 coding variants exist), and is not down-regulated by HIV-infection. The peptides from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) potentially presented by HLA-E molecules, however, are unknown. Here we describe human T-cell responses to Mtb-derived peptides containing predicted HLA-E binding motifs and binding-affinity for HLA-E. We observed CD8(+) T-cell proliferation to the majority of the 69 peptides tested in Mtb responsive adults as well as in BCG-vaccinated infants. CD8(+) T-cells were cytotoxic against target-cells transfected with HLA-E only in the presence of specific peptide. These T cells were also able to lyse M. bovis BCG infected, but not control monocytes, suggesting recognition of antigens during mycobacterial infection. In addition, peptide induced CD8(+) T-cells also displayed regulatory activity, since they inhibited T-cell proliferation. This regulatory activity was cell contact-dependent, and at least partly dependent on membrane-bound TGF-beta. Our results significantly increase our understanding of the human immune response to Mtb by identification of CD8(+) T-cell responses to novel HLA-E binding peptides of Mtb, which have cytotoxic as well as immunoregulatory activity.
