Diperoxovanadate is effective only in presence of free vanadate in vanadium-dependent bromoperoxidation at physiological pH. Peroxide in the form of bridged divanadate complex (VOOV-type), but not the bidentate form as in diperoxovanadate, is proposed to be the oxidant of bromide. In order to obtain direct evidence, peroxo-divanadate complexes with glycyl-glycine, glycyl-alanine and glycyl-asparagine as heteroligands were synthesized. By elemental analysis and spectral studies they were characterized to be triperoxo-divanadates, [V2O2(O-2)(3)(peptide)(3)]. H2O, with the two vanadium atoms bridged by a peroxide and a heteroligand. The dipeptide seems to stabilize the peroxo-bridge by inter-ligand interaction, possibly hydrogen bonding. This is indicated by rapid degradation of these compounds on dissolving in water with partial loss of peroxide accompanied by release of bubbles of oxygen. The V-51-NMR spectra of such solutions showed diperoxovanadate and decavanadate (oligomerized from vanadate) as the products. Additional oxygen was released on treating these solutions with catalase as expected of residual diperoxovanadate. The solid compounds when added to the reaction mixtures showed transient, rapid bromoperoxidation reaction, but not oxidation of NADH or inactivation of glucose oxidase, the other two activities shown by a mixture of diperoxovanadate and vanadyl. This demonstration of peroxide-bridged divanadate as powerful, selective oxidant of bromide, active at physiological pH, should make it a possible candidate of mimic in the action of vanadium in bromoperoxidase proteins.

In order to investigate the supramolecular hydrogen-bonded networks and other structural features exhibited by compounds containing an organic cation and an inorganic anion, sulfates of the organic diamines, ethylenediamine (I), 1,3-diaminopropane (II), piperazine (III), and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) (IV) have been prepared investigated by X-ray crystallography. While II, III, and IV crystallize in the centrosymmetric space group, Pbca, P2(1)/n, Pbcn, respectively, I crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric space group, P4(1) exhibiting chirality and weak NLO properties. I-IV exhibit different types of supramolecular H-bonded networks involving the organic cation and the SO42- anion. The nature and strength of the H-bonding network vary from one compound to another, with the strongest network found in piperazinium sulfate, III, and the weakest in II. While in III, water molecules form part of the H-bonded network, they are present as guest molecules in the channels of IV. Thermal stability of the compounds as well as the infrared spectra reflect the stabilities of these H-bonded solids. (C) 2002 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

Structures of monohydrogen squarates of methylamine, ethylenediamine, 1,3-diaminopropane, 1,4-diaminobutane, 1,5-diaminopentane, N,N'-diemethylpiperazine and N,N,N,N-tetramethylguanidine have been studied in detail. The supramolecular hydrogen-bonded molecular networks are formed by the monoanion of squaric acid by itself or in association with the parent acid. Three types of hydrogen-bonded motifs are observed in these compounds, namely a liner chain, a cyclic dimer and a cyclic tetramer. These hydrogen-bonded motifs formed by the squaric acid species interact with the amine through N-H...O hydrogen-bonding and give rise to predominantly layered structures, while some of them also exhibit three-dimensional structures. Two of the monohydrogen squarate structures also exhibit pi-pi interactions between two squarate rings. The various hydrogen-bonding parameters in the amine squarates are discussed at length. Adsorption, electrokinetic, microflotation, and flocculation studies have been carried out on sphalerite and galena minerals using extracellular polysaccharides (ECP) isolated from Bacillus polymyxa. The adsorption density of ECP onto galena is found to be higher than that onto sphalerite. The adsorption of ECP onto sphalerite is found to increase from pH 3 to about pH 7, where a maximum is attained, and thereafter continuously decreases. With respect to galena, the adsorption density of ECP steadily increases with increased pH. The addition of ECP correspondingly reduces the negative electrophoretic mobilities of sphalerite and galena in absolute magnitude without shifting their isoelectric points. However, the magnitude of the reduction in the electrophoretic mobility values is found to be greater for galena compared to that for sphalerite. Microflotation tests show that galena is depressed while sphalerite is floated using ECP in the entire pH range investigated. Selective flotation tests on a synthetic mixture of galena and sphalerite corroborate that sphalerite could be floated from galena at pH 9-9.5 using ECP as a depressant for galena. Flocculation tests reveal that in the pH range 9-11, sphalerite is dispersed and galena is flocculated in the presence of ECP. Dissolution tests indicate release of the lattice metal ions from galena and sphalerite, while co-precipitation tests confirm chemical interaction between lead or zinc ions and ECP. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic studies provide evidence in support of hydrogen bonding and chemical interaction for the adsorption of ECP onto galena/sphalerite surfaces. In this work, the synthesis of an oligothiophene having a donor acceptor donor (D-A-D) chromophore with hydrogen bonding groups is described. The D-A-D molecule was demonstrated to self-organize via intermolecular H-bonding between barbituric acid units. Interactions between the oligothiophene subunits were also found to be important, affording nanoribbons that could be observed by atomic force and transmission electron microscopy. The applicability of the oligothiophene for organic electronic applications was investigated by fabricating organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaic devices. The OFET measurements yielded p-type mobility of 7 x 10(-7) cm(2)/(Vs), and when blended with C(60)-PCBM, the photovoltaic efficiency was observed to be 0.18%.

Structural and electronic properties of C-H center dot center dot center dot O contacts in compounds containing a formyl group are investigated from the perspective of both hydrogen bonding and dipole-dipole interactions, in a systematic and graded approach. The effects of a-substitution and self-association on the nature of the formyl H-atom are studied with the NBO and AIM methodologies. The relative dipole-dipole contributions in formyl C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions are obtained for aldehyde dimers. The stabilities and energies of aldehyde clusters (dimer through octamer) have been examined computationally. Such studies have an implication in crystallization mechanisms. Experimental X-ray crystal structures of formaldehyde, acrolein and N-methylformamide have been determined in order to ascertain the role of C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions in the crystal packing of formyl compounds.

Six ternary copper(II) complexes of general formulation [CuLB] (1-6), where L is dianionic ONS-donor thiosemicarbazones derived from the condensation of salicylaldehyde with thiosemicarbazides and B is NN-donor heterocyclic bases like 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, are prepared from a reaction of copper(II) acetate hydrate with the heterocyclic base (B) and the thiosemicarbazone (H2L) in MeOH, and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction technique. Crystal structures of the complexes display a distorted square-pyramidal (4 + 1) coordination geometry having the ONS-donor thiosemicarbazone bonded at the basal plane. The chelating heterocyclic bases exhibit axial-equatorial mode of bonding. The complexes are one-electron paramagnetic and they show axial X-band EPR spectra in DMF-toluene glass at 77 K giving g(parallel to)(A(parallel to)) and g(perpendicular to) values of similar to2.2 (175 x 10(-4) cm(-1)) and similar to2.0 indicating a {d(x2-y2)}(1) ground state. The complexes show a d-d band near 570 nm and a charge transfer band near 400 nm in DMF. The complexes are redox active and exhibit a quasireversible Cu(II)-Cu(I) couple in DMF-0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate near 0.1 V vs. SCE. In this mini-review, I discuss some recent work on the stereochemistry and bonding of lone pairs of electrons in divalent compounds of the heavier carbon group elements (SnII, PbII) and in trivalent compounds of the heavier nitrogen group elements (BiIII). Recently developed methods that permit the real-space visualization of bonding patterns on the basis of density functional calculations of electronic structure, reveal details of the nature of s electron lone pairs in compounds of the heavier main group elements – their stereochemistry and their inertness (or lack thereof). An examination of tetragonal P4/nmm SnO, a-PbO and BiOF, and cubic Fm3m PbS provides a segue into perovskite phases of technological significance, including ferroelectric PbTiO3 and antiferroelectric/piezoelectric PbZrO3, in both of which the lone pairs on Pb atoms play a pivotal rôle.

The crystal structure of Flunazirine, an anticonvulsant drug, is analyzed in terms of intermolecular interactions involving fluorine. The structure displays motifs formed by only weak interactions C–H⋯F and C–H⋯π. The motifs thus generated show cavities, which could serve as hosts for complexation. The structure of Flunazirine displays cavities formed by C–H⋯F and C–H⋯π interactions. Haloperidol, an antipsychotic drug, shows F⋯F interactions in the crystalline lattice in lieu of Cl⋯Cl interactions. However, strong O–H⋯N interactions dominate packing. The salient features of the two structures in terms of intermolecular interactions reveal, even though organic fluorine has lower tendency to engage in hydrogen bonding and F⋯F interactions, these interactions could play a significant role in the design of molecular assemblies via crystal engineering.

Internal vibration modes of bis-(alkylammonium) tetrachlorometallates(II) and the corresponding alkylammonium chlorides have been studied through their phase transitions using infrared spectroscopy. The studies show that the vibrational states of alkylammonium ions change markedly through the phase transitions. Spectra of the analogous tetrabromometallates and alkylammonium bromides also confirm this behaviour. There is appreciable motion of the alkylammonium ions in the high-temperature phases; thus, CH3NH+3 ions are essentially undistorted in these phases. The low-temperature, ordered phases show evidence of stronger hydrogen bonding of the cations and for the presence of C—N torsional modes.

The study of reaction mechanisms involves systematic investigations of the correlation between structure, reactivity, and time. The challenge is to be able to observe the chemical changes undergone by reactants as they change into products via one or several intermediates such as electronic excited states (singlet and triplet), radicals, radical ions, carbocations, carbanions, carbenes, nitrenes, nitrinium ions, etc. The vast array of intermediates and timescales means there is no single ``do-it-all'' technique. The simultaneous advances in contemporary time-resolved Raman spectroscopic techniques and computational methods have done much towards visualizing molecular fingerprint snapshots of the reactive intermediates in the microsecond to femtosecond time domain. Raman spectroscopy and its sensitive counterpart resonance Raman spectroscopy have been well proven as means for determining molecular structure, chemical bonding, reactivity, and dynamics of short-lived intermediates in solution phase and are advantageous in comparison to commonly used time-resolved absorption and emission spectroscopy. Today time-resolved Raman spectroscopy is a mature technique; its development owes much to the advent of pulsed tunable lasers, highly efficient spectrometers, and high speed, highly sensitive multichannel detectors able to collect a complete spectrum. This review article will provide a brief chronological development of the experimental setup and demonstrate how experimentalists have conquered numerous challenges to obtain background-free (removing fluorescence), intense, and highly spectrally resolved Raman spectra in the nanosecond to microsecond (ns-mu s) and picosecond (ps) time domains and, perhaps surprisingly, laid the foundations for new techniques such as spatially offset Raman spectroscopy.

InN quantum dots (QDs) were fabricated on silicon nitride/Si (111) substrate by droplet epitaxy. Single-crystalline structure of InN QDs was verified by transmission electron microscopy, and the chemical bonding configurations of InN QDs were examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photoluminescence measurement shows a slight blue shift compared to the bulk InN, arising from size dependent quantum confinement effect. The interdigitated electrode pattern was created and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of InN QDs were studied in a metal-semiconductor-metal configuration in the temperature range of 80-300K. The I-V characteristics of lateral grown InN QDs were explained by using the trap model. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3651762]

The reaction of [Cp*TaCl(4)], 1 (Cp* = eta(5)-C(5)Me(5)), with [LiBH(4)center dot THF] at -78 degrees C, followed by thermolysis in the presence of excess [BH(3)center dot THF], results in the formation of the oxatantalaborane cluster [(Cp*Ta)(2)B(4)H(10)O], 2 in moderate yield. Compound 2 is a notable example of an oxatantalaborane cluster where oxygen is contiguously bound to both the metal and boron. Upon availability of 2, a room temperature reaction was performed with [Fe(2)(CO)(9)], which led to the isolation of [(Cp*Ta)(2)B(2)H(4)O{H(2)Fe(2)(CO)(6)BH} ] 3. Compound 3 is an unusual heterometallic boride cluster in which the [Ta(2)Fe(2)] atoms define a butterfly framework with one boron atom lying in a semi-interstitial position. Likewise, the diselenamolybdaborane, [(Cp*Mo)(2)B(4)H(4)Se(2)], 4 was treated with an excess of [Fe(2)(CO)(9)] to afford the heterometallic boride cluster [(Cp*MoSe)(2)Fe(6)(CO)(13)B(2)(BH)(2)], 5. The cluster core of 5 consists of a cubane [Mo(2)Se(2)Fe(2)B(2)] and a tricapped trigonal prism [Fe(6)B(3)] fused together with four atoms held in common between the two subclusters. In the tricapped trigonal prism subunit, one of the boron atoms is completely encapsulated and bonded to six iron and two boron atoms. Compounds 2, 3, and 5 have been characterized by mass spectrometry, IR, (1)H, (11)B, (13)C NMR spectroscopy, and the geometric structures were unequivocally established by crystallographic analysis. The density functional theory calculations yielded geometries that are in close agreement with the observed structures. Furthermore, the calculated (11)B NMR chemical shifts also support the structural characterization of the compounds. Natural bond order analysis and Wiberg bond indices are used to gain insight into the bonding patterns of the observed geometries of 2, 3, and 5.

The method of Gibbs-Duhem integration suggested by Speiser et al. has been modified to derive activities from distribution equilibria. It is shown that, in general, the activities of components in melts with a common anion can be calculated, without using their standard Gibbs energies of formation, from eqUilibrium ratios and the knowledge of activities in the metal phase. Moreover, if systems are so chosen that the concentration of one element in the metal phase lies in the Henry's law region (less than 1 %), information on activities in the metal phase is not required. Conversely, activities of elements in an alloy can be readily calculated from equilibrium distribution ratios alone, if the salt phase in equilibrium contains very small amounts of one element. Application of the method is illustrated using distribution ratios from the literature on AgCI-CuCI, AgBr-CuBr, and CuDo.5 -PbD systems. The results indicate that covalent bonding and van der Waals repulsive interactions in certain types of fused salt melts can significantly affect the thermodynamic properties of mixing.

Bonding a fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composite or metallic plate to the soffit of a reinforced concrete (RC), timber or metallic beam can significantly increase its strength and other aspects of structural performance. These hybrid beams are often found to fail due to premature debonding of the plate from the original beam in a brittle manner. This has led to the development of many analytical solutions over the last two decades to quantify the interfacial shear and normal stresses between the adherends. The adherends are subjected to axial, bending and shear deformations. However, most analytical solutions have neglected the influence of shear deformation of the adherends. For the few solutions which consider this effect in an approximate manner, their applicability is limited to one or two specific load cases. This paper presents a general analytical solution for the interfacial stresses in plated beams under an arbitrary loading with the shear deformation of the adherends duly considered. The shear stress distribution is assumed to be parabolic through the depth of the adherends in predicting the interfacial shear stress and Timoshenko's beam theory is adopted in predicting interfacial normal stress to account for the shear deformation. The solution is applicable to a beam of arbitrary prismatic cross-section bonded symmetrically or asymmetrically with a thin or thick plate, both having linear elastic material properties. The effect of shear deformation is illustrated through an example beam. The influence of material and geometric parameters of the adherends and adhesive on the interfacial stress concentrations at the plate end is discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
