Conflicting findings regarding the ability of people with schizophrenia to maintain and update semantic contexts have been due, arguably, to vagaries within the experimental design employed (e.g. whether strongly or remotely associated prime-target pairs have been used, what delay between the prime and the target was employed, and what proportion of related prime-target pairs appeared) or to characteristics of the participant cohort (e.g. medication status, chronicity of illness). The aim of the present study was to examine how people with schizophrenia maintain and update contextual information over an extended temporal window by using multiple primes that were either remotely associated or unrelated to the target. Fourteen participants with schizophrenia and 12 healthy matched controls were compared across two stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) (short and long) and two relatedness proportions (RP) (high and low) in a crossed design. Analysis of variance statistics revealed significant two- and three-way interactions between Group and SOA, Group and Condition, SOA and RP, and Group, SOA and RP. The participants with schizophrenia showed evidence of enhanced remote priming at the short SOA and low RP, combined with a reduction in the time course over which context could be maintained. There was some sensitivity to biasing contextual information at the short SOA, although the mechanism over which context served to update information appeared to be different from that in the controls. The participants with schizophrenia showed marked performance decrements at the long SOA (both low and high RP). Indices of remote priming at the short (but not the long) SOA correlated with both clinical ratings of thought disorder and with increasing length of illness. The results support and extend the hypothesis that schizophrenia is associated with concurrent increases in tonic dopamine activity and decreases in phasic dopamine activity. Data provided by 7380 middle managers from 60 nations are used to determine whether demographic variables are correlated with managers’ reliance on vertical sources of guidance in different nations and whether these correlations differ depending on national culture characteristics. Significant effects of Hofstede’s national culture scores, age, gender, organization ownership and department function are found. After these main effects have been discounted, significant although weak interactions are found, indicating that demographic effects are stronger in individualist, low power distance nations than elsewhere. Significant non-predicted interaction effects of uncertainty avoidance and masculinity-femininity are also obtained. The implications for theory and practice of the use of demographic attributes in understanding effective management procedures in various parts of the world are discussed.

Objectives: To assess narrowing of the inferior dental canal in the lower third molar regions using computed tomography (CT) and to determine the value of radiographic markers on rotational panoramic radiographs in assessing the true relationships of the inferior dental canal. Methods: Patients referred for CT assessment of impacted lower third molars were used in this study. The lower third molars were assessed using CT to determine the position and morphology of the inferior dental canal relative to the roots and the cortical plates. The radiographic markers on rotational panoramic radiographs were correlated with the CT findings when rotational panoramic radiographs were available. Results: The patients referred had 202 lower third molars. Inferior positioning of the inferior dental canal was the most common location on CT. Narrowing of the inferior dental canal was found in relation to the lower third molars in 66.8% of cases. The chance of narrowing of the inferior dental canal as shown using CT increased when at least one of the radiographic markers, superimposition, narrowing, deviation or reduction in density was present on the rotational panoramic radiograph. Deviation of the inferior dental canal on rotational panoramic radiographs was found to be the most significant predictor of narrowing of the inferior dental canal and a close relationship to the roots, as shown in CT. Conclusions: Narrowing of the inferior dental canal is a common finding when impacted lower third molars are assessed using CT. On rotational panoramic radiographs deviation of the inferior dental canal is the best predictor of narrowing of the inferior dental canal and a close relationship to the roots.

The manufacture of a radio frequency filter box using high pressure die casting (HPDC) is compared to the traditional high speed machining route. This paper describes an industrial exercise that concluded HPDC to be an economical and appropriate method to produce larger volumes of thin-walled telecommunications components. Modifications to the component design were made to make the component suitable for the HPDC process. Development of the die design through simulation modelling is described. The wrought alloy was replaced by near-eutectic Al-Si die casting alloy that was found to give better temperature stability performance. Apart from the economic benefits, HPDC was found to give lower filter efficiency losses through better surface finish. The effects of HPDC process variables, such as intensification pressure and injection piston velocity, on component quality, particularly porosity levels, were investigated. The pressure was analysed in terms of HPDC machine set pressure and the pressure measured in the die cavity by pressure sensors. Porosity was found to decrease with increased pressure and slightly increase with higher casting velocities.

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is characterized by a burning sensation of the oral mucosa in the absence of mucosal abnormality Various local, systemic and psychological factors are associated with BMS, but its aetiology is not fully understood. Recently, significant inroads have been made, producing a better understanding of this complex condition. The aim of the current paper is to explore the condition of BMS in an educational context with the specific outcome of increasing awareness of the condition.

This paper reviews the current concepts of mycology and candidal infections as they relate to the oral cavity. Proposed classification for the presentation of oral candidosis is outlined as are examples of these topical infections, such as erythematous, pseudomembranous and hyperplastic candidosis, as well as angular chelitis and median rhomboid glossitis. The diagnosis and principles of management of oral candidosis are discussed, the therapeutic agents available for the management of these infections are presented and a treatment protocol for the management of patients with oral candidosis is given.

Topical corticosteroids represent an important therapeutic aid in the management of a range of oral mucosal disease conditions. Like all medications, their successful use depends upon an understanding of the disease process. This includes an appropriate diagnosis, a clear view of the desirable treatment outcomes and knowledge of whether treatment is aimed at management of a chronic disease or enhanced resolution of a short-term condition. This paper reviews the use of topical corticosteroids and their possible roles in the management of oral disease.

This essay looks at the sedition trials in Scotland during the 1790s to examine how prosecution was exploited by radicals as a forum for political expression. As the government instituted a concerted campaign against radical activism, an increasing number of reformers faced trial on sedition and treason in this period. The courtroom emerged as an alternative venue for political discourse and this essay will explore some of the ways by which radicals challenged the dominant discursive and performative elements of trial proceedings. Metaplastic breast carcinomas are reported to harbour epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) overexpression in up to 80% of the cases, but EGFR gene amplification is the underlying genetic mechanism in around one-third of these. In this study, EGFR gene amplification as defined by chromogenic in situ hybridization and protein overexpression was examined in a cohort of 47 metaplastic breast carcinomas. Furthermore, the presence of activating EGFR mutations in exons 18, 19, 20, and 21 was investigated. Thirty-two cases showed EGFR overexpression and of these, 11 (34%) harboured EGFR gene amplification. In addition, EGFR amplification showed a statistically significant association with EGFR overexpression (p < 0.0094) and was restricted to carcinomas with homologous metaplasia. Ten cases, five with and five without EGFR amplification, were subjected to microarray-based CGH, which demonstrated that EGFR copy number gain may occur by amplification of a discrete genomic region or by gains of the short arm of chromosome 7 with a breakpoint near the EGFR gene locus, the minimal region of amplification mapping to EGFR, LANCL2, and SECOG. No activating EGFR mutations were identified, suggesting that this is unlikely to be a common alternative underlying genetic mechanism for EGFR expression in metaplastic breast carcinomas. Given that metaplastic breast carcinomas are resistant to conventional chemotherapy or hormone therapy regimens and that tumours with EGFR amplification are reported to be sensitive to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors, these findings indicate that further studies are warranted to explore EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors as potential therapeutic agents for metaplastic breast carcinomas harbouring amplification of 7p11.2.
