Electrocatalytic mechanism for the electrochemical oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) on the highly dispersed Au microparticles electrodeposited on the surface of the glass carbon (GC) electrode in the alkaline Na2CO3/NaHCO3 solution and the surface characteristics of the Au microparticle-modified glass carbon (Au/GC) electrode were studied with in situ FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was found that the final products of HCHO oxidation is HCOO- at the Au/GC electrode and CO2 at the bulk Au electrode. The difference may be ascribed to the different surface characteristics between the Au/GC electrode and the bulk Au electrode. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Incubated solutions containing glutathione (GSH) and alpha- or beta-cyclodextrins (CDs) were analyzed using electrospray mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry, The results suggest that both CDs can catalyze oxidation of GSH to the oxidized glutathione (GSSG). The collision-induced dissociation (CID) of the 1:1 and 1:2 (CD/GSH) and 1:1 (CD/GSSG) complexes reveals the strong interactions of the CDs with the peptides tested. The 1:2 (CD/GSH) complex is considered to be the oxidation reaction intermediate, which indicates that the three-dimensional structure of the complexed two GSHs in CD complexes Is different from that of the proton-bound GSH dimer, The oxidation product, GSSG, Is also observed in the CID spectrum of the singly charged 1:1 (CD/GSH) complex, suggesting that a complex ion-complex ion reaction occurs by forming a doubly charged complex dimer, as a result of the ability of ion trap to accumulate and activate ions. The observations indicate that ion trap mass spectrometry can be used to explore cyclodextrin-catalyzed reactions and to carry out complex gaseous chemistry research. A tyrosinase-based amperometric biosensor using a self-gelatinizable graft copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) with 4-vinylpyridine (PVA-g-PVP) as an immobilization matrix was constructed. The 4-vinylpyridine component of PVA-g-PVP enhances the adherence to a glassy carbon electrode surface. The content of 4-vinylpyridine in this immobilization matrix plays a key role in retaining the activity of tyrosinase. A simple, milder method was adopted by simply syringing the copolymer-tyrosinase aqueous solution on to the electrode surface and allowing water to evaporate at 4 degrees C in a refrigerator. Several parameters, including copolymer composition; pH, applied potential and enzyme membrane composition, ware optimized. The enzyme membrane composition can be varied to obtain higher sensitivity or a wider linear detection range. The biosensor was used for the determination of phenol, p-cresol and catechol. The biosensor exhibited excellent reproducibility, stability and sensitive response and can be used in flow injection analysis. The biosensor showed an extended linear range in hydrophilic organic solvents and it can be used in monitoring organic reaction processes. The analytical performance demonstrated this immobilization matrix is suitable for the immobilization of tyrosinase.

The ceria modified Pt/CeO2/Al2O3 and Pt/Al2O3 catalysts were studied in the partial oxidation of methane to syngas. The SEM, XRD, TPR and TPD techniques were used for the catalyst characterization. The addition of ceria could enhance the Pt dispersion and decrease the Pt crystallise size; the activity and selectivity of catalyst for partial oxidation were improved significantly, and the methane total oxidation was suppressed sharply. The ceria effect was also discussed in a detailed way.

The catalytic partial oxidation of methane to syngas over Ni/Al2O3, Pt/Al2O3 and a series of Pt - Ni/Al2O3 catalysts was investigated. It was found that Pt - Ni/Al2O3 catalysts exhibit higher activity and stability than Ni/Al2O3 and Pt/Al2O3. TPR and TPD methods were used to characterize Pt - Ni bimetallic interactions in the catalysts. A series of Pt - Ni/Al2O3 catalysts and unsupported Pt - Ni samples were studied by XRD and XPS. It was found the formation of Pt - Ni alloy in the Pt - Ni/Al2O3 catalysts and the enrichment of platinum on the surface of the catalysts. It is concluded that the higher activity and stability of Pt - Ni/Al2O3 catalysts were caused by Pt - Ni bimetallic interactions.

Poly(vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol) copolymers (P(VAc-co-VA)) were synthesized by hydrolysis-alcoholysis of PVAc. The miscibility, crystallization, and morphology of poly(P-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and P(VAc-co-VA) blends were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy (OM), and SAXS. It is found that the P(VAc-co-VA)s with vinyl alcohol content of 9, 15, and 22 mol % will form a miscible phase with the amorphous part of PHB in the solution-cast samples. The melting-quenched samples of PHB/P(VAc-co-VA) blends with different vinyl alcohol content show different phase behavior. PHB and P(VAc-co-VA9) with low vinyl alcohol content (9% mel) will form a miscible blend in the melt state. PHB and P(VAc-co-VA15) with 15 mol % vinyl alcohol will not form miscible blends while PHB/P(VAc-co-VA15) blend with 20/80 composition will form a partially miscible blend in the melt state. PHB and P(VAc-co-VA22) with 22 mol % vinyl alcohol are not miscible in the whole composition range. The single glass transition temperature of the blends within the whole composition range suggests that PHB and P(VAc-co-VA9) are totally miscible in the melt. The crystallization kinetics was studied from the whole crystallization and spherulite growth for the miscible blends. The equilibrium melting point of PHB in the PHB/P(VAc-co-VA9) blends, which was obtained from DSC results using the Hoffman-Weeks equation, decreases with the increase in P(VAc-co-VA9) content. The negative value of the interaction parameter determined from the equilibrium melting point depression supports the miscibility between the components. The kinetics of spherulitic crystallization of PHB in the blends was analyzed according to nucleation theory in the temperature range studied in this work. The best fit of the data to the kinetic theory is obtained by employing WLF parameters and the equilibrium melting points obtained by DSC. The addition of P(VAc-co-VA) did not affect the crystalline structure of PHB, as shown by the WAXD results. The long periods of blends obtained from SAXS increase with the increase in P(VAc-co-VA) content. It indicates that the amorphous P(VAc-co-VA) was rejected to interlamellar phase corporating with the amorphous part of PHB.

A novel poly(vinyl alcohol) grafting 4-vinylpyridine self-gelatinizable copolymer was adapted to immobilize glucose oxidase. The reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was detected at a Prussian Blue (PB) modified graphite electrode. A stable and sensitive glucose amperometric biosensor is described. The copolymer is a good biocompatible polymer in which the glucose oxidase retains high activity. Moreover, the copolymer can adhere firmly to the inorganic PB membrane. The sensor showed an apparent Michaelis-Menten constant of 18 +/- 0.2 mM and a maximum current density of 1.14 mu A cm(-2) mM(-1). The linear range is from 5 mu M to 4.5 mM glucose and the detection limit is 0.5. mu M glucose. The catalytic efficiency of PB for the reduction of H2O2 is higher than that for the oxidation of H2O2. Glucose concentrations in serum samples from healthy persons and diabetic patients were determined using the sensor. The results compared well with those provided by the hospital using a spectroscopy method.

The catalytic oxidation of methane to syngas has been carried out over Pt/Al2O3 and Pt/CeO2/Al2O3. It was found that the catalysts with ceria exhibit a higher activity and selectivity than those without ceria. The catalysts were characterized by means of TPR, TPD, SEM-EDX and XRD. There is a strong interaction between ceria and platinum under the reaction condition, which increase the dispersion of platinum over catalysts, preventing the sinter of the Pt particles. As a result of the synergistic;effect between Pt and ceria, the activity of Pt/Al2O3 for combustion reaction was suppressed, the activity and selectivity :For partial oxidation were improved greatly. Another role of ceria in the catalyst is the enhancing of the WGSR, which leads to the increase of the selectivity of catalyst for hydrogen and accelerating the equilibrium of the reaction.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol at the Titanium oxide (TiOx, x<2) film modified with Pt microparticles has been studied. The results show that the modified electrodes exhibit a significant electrocatalytic activity and good stability for the oxidation of methanol. Under the optimal conditions, the peak current density at 0.58 V for the oxidation of methanol in the positive-going sweep is about 526 mA/cm(2) at the scan rate of 5 mV/s in 0.5 mol/L CH3OH and 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solution and the over potential of the methanol oxidation at the modified electrode increases about 30 similar to 40 mV after 70 minutes at the current density of 100 mA/cm(2) and 50 mA/cm(2). The enhanced electrocatalytic activity and good stability are ascribed to the high dispersion of Pt microparticles in and on the TiOx film and the synergistic effect between Pt microparticles and TiOx.

In situ microscopic FTIR spectroelectrochemistry behavior of L-ascorbic acid (H(2)A) in polymer electrolyte is reported for the first time. H(2)A undergoes a two-step oxidation, The oxidation waves shift towards more anodic potential values when the scan rate increases. The peak currents of the oxidation waves are proportional to the square roots of scan rate up to 100 mV/s, The in situ infrared spectra suggest that the product of the oxidation be dehydroascorbic acid, which may exist as a dimer.

4-Pyridyl hydroquinone on a platinum electrode adsorbs through the pyridine nitrogen forming stable self-assembled layers. The electrocatalytical oxidation of hydrazines was performed by the modified electrode. The overpotential of hydrazines was decreased markedly at the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) electrode. The mechanism of hydrazine oxidation was also investigated. Amperometric detection of hydrazine under zero potential (vs Ag\AgCI\sat. KCl) was exhibited by the SAM electrode used as an electrochemical detector in a flow system. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Hydrotalcite-like compounds (HTLcs): CoMAlCO3-HTLcs (M=Cu2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Cr3+, Fe3+), were synthesized by coprecipitation and characterized with XRD and IR. The catalysis of these HTLcs and their calcined products were studied in the p-cresol oxidation, and the effects of the temperature of HTLcs calcination, the ratio of Co/Cu, different promoters, reaction temperatures and reaction times on reaction activities were investigated. It has been found that calcined HTLcs have higher activity than uncalcined samples and mechanical mixed oxides in this reaction. The best yield was obtained from the CoCuAlCO3-HTLc (Co/Cu/Al=3:1:1) calcined at 450 degrees C. A tentative reaction mechanism was also proposed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

The production of synthesis gas by partial oxidation bf methane in oxygen has been examined over Ni/alpha-Al2O3 catalyst promoted by noble metals(Rh, Ru, Pt and Pd), especially with Pt. The reactivity is considered in conjunction with the result of H-2-TPR, CO-TPD, SEM and XRD. It is found that small amount of Pt results in a great improvement of activity for the Ni/alpha-Al2O3 catalyst. The activity order is : Rh-Ni>Pt-Ni approximate to Ru-Ni>Pd-Ni, meantime the Pt improves the stability of Ni/alpha-Al2O3 catalyst except for Pd which is easy to he deactivated by carbon deposition. The results of TPD, SEM and XRD indicate that there is an interaction between Ni and Pt metals in the catalyst. The interaction increases the dispersions of Pt and Nit the presence of Pt suppresses the growth and the migration of Ni grains over the surface of the catalyst.

Hydrotalcite-like compounds (HTLcs): (CuMAlCO3)-Al-II-HTLcs, where M-II=Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Fe2+, were synthesized by coprecipitation and characterized with XRD and IR. The catalysis of these HTLcs was studied in the phenol hydroxylation by H2O2 in liquid phase; then the effects of the ratio of Cu/Al, reaction temperature, solvent and pH of medium were investigated. It has been found that the uncalcined HTLcs have higher activities than those of calcined samples in this reaction. The catalyst CuAlCO3-HTLcs having Cu/Al=3 efficiently oxidized phenol and gave high yields of the corresponding diphenols in appropriate reaction conditions. A tentative reaction mechanism is also proposed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
