Cobalt, nickel and strontium were introduced via flaps into leaf laminas or into the stem of maturing, intact winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. `Arina') grown under natural conditions in a field. Long-distance transport of these elements and the influence of the application date and of different application positions were investigated. The dry-matter accumulation in the grains was not markedly affected by the treatments as compared to untreated control plants. The phloem-immobile strontium served as a marker for the distribution of the xylem sap in the plants. After foliar application, nickel accumulated more rapidly and in higher quantities in the grains than cobalt. Therefore, nickel has a slightly better phloem mobility than cobalt. Regardless of the application date, a higher percentage of the two elements was transported from the flag leaf lamina than from the second or third lamina from the top to the grains. These results indicate that the leaf position is highly relevant for the transfer of the heavy metals investigated to the ear. Introduction into the stem led to a higher accumulation of nickel and cobalt in the grains than introduction into one of the leaves. An earlier feeding date caused a higher accumulation of nickel and cobalt in the grains when introduced into the stem. In contrast, no major differences between earlier and later feeding dates were detected when the elements were introduced into the leaves. Losses of the applied elements were detected during maturation and can be explained by leakage in the rain.

Symptoms of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) are nonspecific and guidance on whom to refer for testing is limited. Diagnostic tests for PCD are highly specialised, requiring expensive equipment and experienced PCD scientists. This study aims to develop a practical clinical diagnostic tool to identify patients requiring testing.Patients consecutively referred for testing were studied. Information readily obtained from patient history was correlated with diagnostic outcome. Using logistic regression, the predictive performance of the best model was tested by receiver operating characteristic curve analyses. The model was simplified into a practical tool (PICADAR) and externally validated in a second diagnostic centre.Of 641 referrals with a definitive diagnostic outcome, 75 (12%) were positive. PICADAR applies to patients with persistent wet cough and has seven predictive parameters: full-term gestation, neonatal chest symptoms, neonatal intensive care admittance, chronic rhinitis, ear symptoms, situs inversus and congenital cardiac defect. Sensitivity and specificity of the tool were 0.90 and 0.75 for a cut-off score of 5 points. Area under the curve for the internally and externally validated tool was 0.91 and 0.87, respectively.PICADAR represents a simple diagnostic clinical prediction rule with good accuracy and validity, ready for testing in respiratory centres referring to PCD centres.

This study (1) established comedogenicity dose response curves for the pure compounds of 3,3$\sp\prime$,4,4$\sp\prime$-tetrachloroazobenzene (TCAB) and 3,3$\sp\prime$,4,4$\sp\prime$-tetrachloroazoxybenzene (TCAOB) individually and as a couple-compound using a rabbit ear model; (2) used a rabbit ear model to establish comedogenicity potential for TCAB and TCAOB as they existed in a given industrial herbicide manufacture process; (3) evaluated actual environmental contamination in a herbicide industrial setting by air monitoring and wipe sampling; (4) biologically monitored potentially exposed workers for alterations in follicular orifice size as an index of actual exposure to chloracnegenic compounds; and (5) biologically monitored potentially exposed workers for changes in weight, cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar.^ A silastic monomer mold (an objective measure) was used to measure change in follicular orifice size over time. This required taking impressions of (1) skin of the forehead and right and left malar crescents of workers and (2) the skin of the external ear of the rabbit. Molds were stained using a solution of hematoxylin and digitized using a Nikon UFX microscope (magnification 300 X), a drawing tube and a digitizing tablet attached to an IBM Personal Computer. Comedogenicity assays were used to establish dose-response curves for TCAB, TCAOB and the couple-compound TCAB + TCAOB.^ No evidence of chloracne or toxicity was observed in any of the workers. Nor, was there a statistically significant increase in size of follicular orifice means measured over time. This was attributed to extensive personal and environmental hygiene programs along with teaching the workers about chloracne, its cause and its prevention. These programs may have been the greatest factor in preventing the development of chloracne in this group of workers. Monitoring of the plant environment showed relatively high concentrations of the couple-compound (TCAB + TCAOB). Comedogenicity assays showed a linear dose-response relationship over time for TCAB, TCAOB and the couple-compound. An antagonistic action was found for the TCAB/TCAOB of the couple-compound; such action may provide some protection to workers in this type of setting. It is speculated that the observed antagonistic action may be due to the difference in binding affinities of TCAB/TCAOB for receptor sites. ^

The Armadillo family catenin proteins function in multiple capacities including cadherin-mediated cell-cell adhesion and nuclear signaling. The newest catenin, p120 catenin, differs from the classical catenins and binds to the membrane-proximal domain of cadherins. Recently, a novel transcription factor Kaiso was found to interact with p120 catenin, suggesting that p120 catenin also possesses a nuclear function. We isolated the Xenopus homolog of Kaiso, XKaiso, from a Xenopus stage 17 cDNA library. XKaiso contains an amino-terminal BTB/POZ domain and three carboxyl-terminal zinc fingers. The XKaiso transcript was present maternally and expressed throughout early embryonic development. XKaiso's spatial expression was defined via in situ hybridization and was found localized to the brain, eye, ear, branchial arches, and spinal cord. Co-immunoprecipitation of Xenopus p120 catenin and XKaiso demonstrated their mutual association, while related experiments employing differentially epitope-tagged XKaiso constructs suggest that XKaiso also self-associates. On the functional level, reporter assays employing a chimera of XKaiso fused to the GAL4 DNA binding domain indicated that XKaiso is a transcriptional repressor. To better understand the significance of the Kaiso-p120 catenin complex in vertebrate development, Kaiso knock-down experiments were undertaken, and the modulatory role of p120 catenin in Kaiso function examined during Xenopus development. Using morpholino antisense oligonucleotides to block translation of XKaiso, XKaiso was found to be essential for Xenopus gastrulation, being required for correct morphogenetic movements in early embryogenesis. Molecular marker analyses indicated that one target gene of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, Siamois, is significantly increased in embryos depleted for XKaiso, while other dorsal, ventral, and mesodermal cell fate markers were unaltered. In addition, the non-canonical Wnt-11, known to participate in planar cell polarity/convergent extension processes, was significantly upregulated following depletion of XKaiso. Such increased Wnt-11 expression likely contributed to the XKaiso depletion phenotype because a dominant negative form of Wnt-11 or of the downstream effector Dishevelled partially rescued the observed gastrulation defects. These results show that XKaiso is essential for proper gastrulation movements, resulting at least in part from its modulation of non-canonical Wnt signaling. The significance of the XKaiso-p120 catenin interaction has yet to be determined, but appears to include a role in modulating genes promoting canonical and non-canonical Wnt signals. ^

A corn shelling mechanism comprising an elongated concave means having one end thereof positioned below a rotatable cylinder. A continuous belt sheller is positioned above the concave in a spaced relationship with respect thereto. The corn ears are fed to the rotating cylinder by a feeder housing means with the ear receiving one or more impacts by the rasp bar of the cylinder before it travels out of range of the cylinder. The partially shelled ear passes between the belt sheller and the concave with the belt sheller urging the ears into engagement with the concave to complete the shelling operation.

La novela de Marcelo Cohen, El oído absoluto, constituye dentro del sistema de la narrativa argentina, un ejemplo interesante y original por su relación con el género utópico. En efecto, el mundo posible creado por el texto para enmarcar la peripecia de los protagonistas: Evelino Borusso, Clarisa Wald, el padre de ésta, cuyo nombre original -León- ha devenido en Lotario, Tristán (nombres en los cuales es dable percibir un dejo de ironía que es la característica de toda la narración) se dan muchas de las características (insularidad, dirigismo, colectivismo, gobierno patriarcal regido por un grupo de filósofos o notables) y de las virtudes ensalzadas en la utopía clásica (el espíritu comunitario, la valoración del trabajo en detrimento del ocio, el desdén por el dinero). Pero al mismo tiempo se socavan, desde las dudas del narrador y de los personajes, las raíces mismas de ese mundo perfecto, y se reclama por una nueva utopía -a música, el lenguaje, la creación novelesca...- que cale más hondo en la intimidad, para clausurar, de una vez para siempre, la soledad y la incomunicación erigidos en puntos centrales de la meditación que la novela propone.

Marine sediments harbor an enormous quantity of microorganisms, including a multitude of novel species. The habitable zone of the marine sediment column begins at the sediment-water interface and probably extends to depths of several thousands of meters. Studies of the microbial diversity in this ecosystem have mostly relied on molecular biological techniques. We used a complementary method - analysis of intact polar membrane lipids - to characterize the in-situ microbial community in sediments covering a wide range of environmental conditions from Peru Margin, Equatorial Pacific, Hydrate Ridge, and Juan de Fuca Ridge. Bacterial and eukaryotic phospholipids were only detected in surface sediments from the Peru Margin. In contrast, deeply buried sediments, independent of their geographic location, were dominated by archaeal diether and tetraether lipids with various polar head groups and core lipids. We compared ring distributions of archaeal tetraether lipids derived from polar glycosidic precursors with those that are present as core lipids. The distributions of these related compound pools were distinct, suggestive of different archaeal sources, i.e., the polar compounds derive from sedimentary communities and the core lipids are fossil remnants from planktonic communities with possible admixtures of decayed sedimentary archaea. This in-situ production of distinct archaeal lipid populations potentially affects applications of the TEX86 paleotemperature proxy as demonstrated by offsets in reconstructed temperatures between both pools. We evaluated how varying cell and lipid stabilities will influence the sedimentary pool by using a box-model. The results are consistent with (i) a requirement of continuous inputs of freshly synthesized lipids in subsurface sediments for explaining the observed distribution of intact polar lipids, and (ii) decreasing lipid inputs with increasing burial depth.

La diversidad genética poblacional de maíz en México es muy dinámica y depende de factores biológicos, agroecológicos y socio-económicos, y necesidades familiares. En este trabajo se describió y clasificó la variabilidad morfológica de una colección de 60 muestras poblacionales de maíz, colectadas en 44 municipios de la Mixteca Baja Oaxaqueña (846 msnm a 1842 msnm). Las muestras se sembraron y cultivaron durante el ciclo primavera-verano de 2010, en Santo Domingo Tonala, Oaxaca, bajo un diseño de bloques completos al azar con cuatro repeticiones. Se evaluaron 19 caracteres morfológicos de planta, mazorca, grano y espiga (panoja), y se determinaron diferencias significativas entre poblacionales en estos caracteres. Los caracteres altura de planta y mazorca, días a floración masculina y femenina, y número de granos por hilera en la mazorca fueron determinantes para describir la variabilidad morfológica total. La variación morfológica y fenológica de las poblaciones de maíz se asocia con los patrones altitudinales y geográficos de donde proceden. Se determinaron seis grupos fenotípicos significativamente diferentes con características de mazorca, grano y planta semejantes a las descritas para las razas Celaya, Bolita, Pepitilla, Ancho, y ciertos complejos raciales entre Ancho, Mixteco, Celaya y Bolita.

A large fraction of the carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere by human activity enters the sea, causing ocean acidification. We show that otoliths (aragonite ear bones) of young fish grown under high CO2 (low pH) conditions are larger than normal, contrary to expectation. We hypothesize that CO2 moves freely through the epithelium around the otoliths in young fish, accelerating otolith growth while the local pH is controlled. This is the converse of the effect commonly reported for structural biominerals.

Increasing amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) from human industrial activities are causing changes in global ocean carbonate chemistry, resulting in a reduction in pH, a process termed "ocean acidification." It is important to determine which species are sensitive to elevated levels of CO2 because of potential impacts to ecosystems, marine resources, biodiversity, food webs, populations, and effects on economies. Previous studies with marine fish have documented that exposure to elevated levels of CO2 caused increased growth and larger otoliths in some species. This study was conducted to determine whether the elevated partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) would have an effect on growth, otolith (ear bone) condition, survival, or the skeleton of juvenile scup, Stenotomus chrysops, a species that supports both important commercial and recreational fisheries. Elevated levels of pCO2 (1200-2600 µatm) had no statistically significant effect on growth, survival, or otolith condition after 8 weeks of rearing. Field data show that in Long Island Sound, where scup spawn, in situ levels of pCO2 are already at levels ranging from 689 to 1828 µatm due to primary productivity, microbial activity, and anthropogenic inputs. These results demonstrate that ocean acidification is not likely to cause adverse effects on the growth and survivability of every species of marine fish. X-ray analysis of the fish revealed a slightly higher incidence of hyperossification in the vertebrae of a few scup from the highest treatments compared to fish from the control treatments. Our results show that juvenile scup are tolerant to increases in seawater pCO2, possibly due to conditions this species encounters in their naturally variable environment and their well-developed pH control mechanisms.

Th e CERES-Maize model is the most widely used maize (Zea mays L.) model and is a recognized reference for comparing new developments in maize growth, development, and yield simulation. Th e objective of this study was to present and evaluate CSMIXIM, a new maize simulation model for DSSAT version 4.5. Code from CSM-CERES-Maize, the modular version of the model, was modifi ed to include a number of model improvements. Model enhancements included the simulation of leaf area, C assimilation and partitioning, ear growth, kernel number, grain yield, and plant N acquisition and distribution. Th e addition of two genetic coeffi cients to simulate per-leaf foliar surface produced 32% smaller root mean square error (RMSE) values estimating leaf area index than did CSM-CERES. Grain yield and total shoot biomass were correctly simulated by both models. Carbon partitioning, however, showed diff erences. Th e CSM-IXIM model simulated leaf mass more accurately, reducing the CSM-CERES error by 44%, but overestimated stem mass, especially aft er stress, resulting in similar average RMSE values as CSM-CERES. Excessive N uptake aft er fertilization events as simulated by CSM-CERES was also corrected, reducing the error by 16%. Th e accuracy of N distribution to stems was improved by 68%. Th ese improvements in CSM-IXIM provided a stable basis for more precise simulation of maize canopy growth and yield and a framework for continuing future model developments
