Structures et pratiques économiques dans l'oeuvre d'Émile Zola, l'exemple de Germinal

Fer de lance du naturalisme, Émile Zola a construit chacun de ses romans avec un souci remarquable du détail. Germinal (1885), treizième opus des Rougon-Macquart, n'échappe pas à cette règle. La description que Zola réalise des mines de Montsou et de ses habitants se fonde sur un vaste travail préparatoire mené sur le terrain, et à travers de nombreuses lectures, dont certaines de nature économique. Bien que Zola n'ait pas cherché à inscrire son travail dans le champ de l'économie politique, son interprétation des structures et pratiques économiques dans Germinal constitue à la fois le témoignage d'un écrivain singulier sur l'univers minier de la deuxième partie du XIXe siècle, et une source presque historique des réalités d'un monde aujourd'hui disparu. Cette contribution met en évidence la manière dont Zola a transcrit, dans son ouvrage, le fruit de ses modestes recherches économiques sur l'industrie minière. Elle confronte récit zolien et théorie économique dans le champ des ressources naturelles et dans celui des rapports entre crise et activité minière.

Deep thiopental anesthesia alters steady-state glucose homeostasis but not the neurochemical profile of rat cortex.

Barbiturates are regularly used as an anesthetic for animal experimentation and clinical procedures and are frequently provided with solubilizing compounds, such as ethanol and propylene glycol, which have been reported to affect brain function and, in the case of (1)H NMR experiments, originate undesired resonances in spectra affecting the quantification. As an alternative, thiopental can be administrated without any solubilizing agents. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of deep thiopental anesthesia on the neurochemical profile consisting of 19 metabolites and on glucose transport kinetics in vivo in rat cortex compared with alpha-chloralose using localized (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Thiopental was devoid of effects on the neurochemical profile, except for the elevated glucose at a given plasma glucose level resulting from thiopental-induced depression of glucose consumption at isoelectrical condition. Over the entire range of plasma glucose levels, steady-state glucose concentrations were increased on average by 48% +/- 8%, implying that an effect of deep thiopental anesthesia on the transport rate relative to cerebral glucose consumption ratio was increased by 47% +/- 8% compared with light alpha-chloralose-anesthetized rats. We conclude that the thiopental-induced isoelectrical condition in rat cortex significantly affected glucose contents by depressing brain metabolism, which remained substantial at isoelectricity.

Point defects and texture of Pd1-xInx sputtered intermetallic thin films

Pd1-xInx thin films (0.4 < x < 0.56) were prepared by radio frequency sputtering from a multi-zone target. The properties of these Hume-Rothery alloys were studied by X-ray diffractometry, electron probe microanalysis and scanning tunneling microscopy. The diffraction spectra were analyzed to obtain the intensity ratio of the (100) superlattice line to the (200) normal line, together with the variations of the lattice constant. The results ape explained quantitatively by a model based on point defects, i.e. Pd vacancies in In-rich films and Pd antisite atoms in Pd-rich films. In-rich films grow preferentially in the [100] direction while Pd-rich films grow preferentially in the [110] direction. The grains in indium-rich sputtered films appear to be enclosed in an atomically thick, indium-rich layer. The role of texture and the influence of point defects on electrical resistivity is also reported. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Limited.

Pédiatrie 2. Génétique des épilepsies de l'enfant: Pour qui ? Comment? Pourquoi [Genetics of childhood epilepsies: for who? how? why?].

Recent advances in genetics led to significant improvement in the field of childhood epilepsies diagnosis and physiopathology. Genetic testing is indicated by geneticist who is himself guided by the pediatric neurological approach. In rare circumstance, genetic etiology affects the clinical management. Cost remains the main limitation. Those new genetic tools are the first step toward a better understanding of seizure mechanism and therefore more efficient treatments.

Does partisan alignment affect the electoral reward of intergovernmental transfers?

[spa] En este trabajo analizamos la hipótesis que las transferencias asignadas a los municipios políticamente alineados generan un mayor apoyo político que las transferencias asignada a los municipios gobernados por la oposición. Para contrastar esta hipótesis utilizamos datos de las transferencias recibidas por 617 municipios españoles procedentes de dos niveles de gobierno superiores (Regional o Autonómico y Supra-Local o Diputaciones) durante el período 1993-2003, así como datos de los votos obtenidos en las tres elecciones celebradas en los diferentes niveles de gobierno durante este período.

Fibronectin-binding proteins and clumping factor A in Staphylococcus aureus experimental endocarditis: FnBPA is sufficient to activate human endothelial cells.

Surface molecules of Staphylococcus aureus are involved in the colonization of vascular endothelium which is a crucial primary event in the pathogenesis of infective endocarditis (IE). The ability of these molecules to also launch endothelial procoagulant and proinflammatory responses, which characterize IE, is not known. In the present study we investigated the individual capacities of three prominent S. aureus surface molecules; fibronectin-binding protein A (FnBPA) and B (FnBPB) and clumping factor A (ClfA), to promote bacterial adherence to cultured human endothelial cells (ECs) and to activate phenotypic and functional changes in these ECs. Non-invasive surrogate bacterium Lactococcus lactis, which, by gene transfer, expressed staphylococcal FnBPA, FnBPB or ClfA molecules were used. Infection of ECs increased 50- to 100-fold with FnBPA- or FnBPB-positive recombinant lactococci. This coincided with EC activation, interleukin-8 secretion and surface expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 and concomitant monocyte adhesion. Infection with ClfA-positive lactococci did not activate EC. FnBPA-positive L. lactis also induced a prominent tissue factor-dependent endothelial coagulation response that was intensified by cell-bound monocytes. Thus S. aureus FnBPs, but not ClfA, confer invasiveness and pathogenicity to non-pathogenic L. lactis organisms indicating that bacterium-EC interactions mediated by these adhesins are sufficient to evoke inflammation as well as procoagulant activity at infected endovascular sites.
