Silybin (SB), a constituent of the medicinal plant Silybum marianum, is reported to be a potent hepatoprotective agent, but little is currently known regarding its genotoxicity, mutagenicity and potential chemopreventive properties. In this study, we evaluated the ability of SB to induce DNA migration and micronuclei (MN) formation in human hepatoma cells (HepG2). Also, possible preventive effects of SB on MN formation induced by three different mutagens, bleomycin (BLEO), benzo[a] pyrene (B[alpha] P) and aflatoxin B(1) (AFB(1)), were studied. To clarify the possible mechanism of SB antimutagenicity, three treatment protocols were applied: pretreatment, in which SB was added before the application of the mutagens; simultaneous treatment, in which SB was added during treatment and post-treatment, in which SB was added after the application of the mutagens. At concentrations up to 100 mu M, SB was non-genotoxic, while at a concentration of 200 mu M, SB induced DNA migration, generated oxidized DNA bases, reduced cell viability, decreased the replicative index of the cells and induced oxidative stress. It is noteworthy that SB was able to reduce the genotoxic effect induced by B[alpha] P, BLEO and AFB1 in pretreatment and simultaneous treatments but had no significant effect on DNA damage induction in post-treatment. Taken together, our findings indicate that SB presents anti-genotoxic activity in vitro, which suggests potential use as a chemopreventive agent.

Welcome to the 2003 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit Annual Report. This report is a brief summary of Unit activities during the 2003 calendar year. The Unit provides personal and academic support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and specifically aims to increase the recruitment, retention, academic performance and graduation rates of Indigenous students. The Unit also administers schemes to help Indigenous students gain access to, and receive support in, tertiary studies such as the Alternative Entry scheme and the federally funded Aboriginal Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ATAS). The Unit is also the focus for teaching and research in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies at the University of Queensland.

The purpose of this article is to examine the causality between government size and corruption, and to verify if there is a different pattern of causality between developed Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries (excluding Mexico) and developing countries (Latin American countries) during the period 1996 to 2003. Applying Granger and Huang`s (1997) methodology we find evidence that size of government Granger causes corruption in both samples. Since a larger government involvement in private markets today will be followed in future by a higher level of corruption a policy advice would be to enhance governance. The promotion of good governance helps to combat corruption given that it complements efforts to reduce corruption more directly, and it is strongly recommended by the International Monetary Fund, other multilateral institutions, and all worried with the negative impacts of corruption on economic activity.

Five New World species of Chrysotus Meigen are redescribed, four of them herein transferred from Diaphorus Meigen: C. angustifrons (Robinson), comb.nov., C. maculatus (Parent), comb.nov. (= D. maculipennis Robinson), C. robustus(Robinson), comb. nov., C. spectabilis (Loew) and C. wirthi (Robinson), comb. nov. The female of C. maculatus is described for the first time. Terminalia of both males and females are illustrated. The previous suggestion that C. angustifrons, C. robustus, C. wirthi, and C. spectabilis and the Neotropical genus Lyroneurus Loew are closely related based on wing venation similarities is analyzed and rejected.

Five new species of Coniceromyia from the Atlantic Forest in Brazil are herein described-Coniceromyia apechoneura, sp. nov., C. brandaoi, sp. nov., C. diaphaniptera, sp. nov., C. franciscana, sp. nov., and C. sanctaetheresae, sp. nov. Both C. diaphaniptera and C. franciscana have patterned wings. The male foretibia provides important diagnostic features for the species, as well as additional characters to propose clades within the genus. The male hypopygial morphology is described.

Background: Interleukin 8 (IL-8) is a chemokine related to the initiation and amplification of acute and chronic inflammatory processes. Polymorphisms in the IL8 gene have been associated with inflammatory diseases. We investigated whether the - 845(T/C) and - 738(T/A) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the IL8 gene, as well as the haplotypes they form together with the previously investigated -353(A/T), are associated with susceptibility to chronic periodontitis. Methods: DNA was extracted from buccal epithelial cells of 400 Brazilian individuals (control n =182, periodontitis n=218). SNPs were genotyped by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Disease associations were analyzed by the chi(2) test, Exact Fisher test and Clump program. Haplotypes were reconstructed using the expectation-maximization algorithm and differences in haplotype distribution between the groups were analyzed to estimate genetic susceptibility for chronic periodontitis development. Results: When analyzed individually, no SNPs showed different distributions between the control and chronic periodontitis groups. Although, nonsmokers carrying the TTA/CAT (OR = 2.35, 95% CI = 1.03-5.36) and TAT/CTA (OR= 6.05, 95% CI = 1.32-27.7) haplotypes were genetically susceptible to chronic periodontitis. The ITT/TAA haplotype was associated with protection against the development of periodontitis (for nonsmokers OR= 0.22, 95% CI = 0.10-0.46). Conclusion: Although none of the investigated SNPs in the IL8 gene was individually associated with periodontitis, some haplotypes showed significant association with susceptibility to, or protection against, chronic periodontitis in a Brazilian population.
