Mixed calcium and copper oxalates, with different proportions of Ca2+ and Cu2+ ions, were precipitated by dimethyl oxalate hydrolysis in homogeneous solution. The compounds were evaluated by means of scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The results suggested quantitative precipitation without solid solution formation. From the TG and DTA curves, it was possible to evaluate the Ca2+ ion proportion in the solid phase and to confirm the precipitation of the individual species.

Thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and DFT theoretical calculations were used to study benzamide. The TG-DTA and DSC curves provided information concerning the melting point, evaporation and thermal stability of the compound. Using the FTIR technique it was possible to confirm the evaporation of the compound with no degradation. Density functional theory (DFT) at the 6-311++G (3df, 3dp) level, provided information regarding the energies involved in HOMO-LUMO transitions and the chemical stability of the compound.

CRTA technology offers better resolution and a more detailed interpretation of the decomposition processes of a clay mineral such as sepiolite via approaching equilibrium conditions of decomposition through the elimination of the slow transfer of heat to the sample as a controlling parameter on the process of decomposition. Constant-rate decomposition processes of non-isothermal nature reveal changes in the sepiolite as the sepiolite is converted to an anhydride. In the dynamic experiment two dehydration steps are observed over the ~20-170 and 170-350°C temperature range. In the dynamic experiment three dehydroxylation steps are observed over the temperature ranges 201-337, 337-638 and 638-982°C. The CRTA technology enables the separation of the thermal decomposition steps.

In recent years, organoclays have become widely used in many industrial applications, and particularly they have been applied as adsorbents for water purification (de Paiva et al., 2008; Zhou et al., 2008; Park et al., 2011). When the organoclays are enhanced by intercalation of cationic surfactant molecules, the surface properties are altered from hydrophilic to highly hydrophobic. These changes facilitate their industrial applications which are strongly dependent on the structural properties of organoclays (Koh and Dixon, 2001; Zeng et al., 2004; Cui et al., 2007). Thus a better understanding of the configuration and structural change in the organoclays by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) is essential. It has been proven that the TG is very useful for the study of complex minerals, modified minerals, and nanomaterials (Laachachi et al., 2005; Palmer et al., 2011; Park et al., in press, 2011). Therefore, the current investigation involves the thermal stability of a montmorillonite intercalated with two types of cationic surfactants: dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DDTMA) and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDDMA) using TG. The modification of montmorillonite results in an increase in the interlayer or basal spacing and enhances the environmental and industrial application of the obtained organoclay.

The objective of this work is to determine the thermal stability and vibrational spectra of datolite CaBSiO4(OH) and relate these properties to the structure of the mineral. The thermal analysis of datolite shows a mass loss of 5.83% over a 700–775 °C temperature range. This mass loss corresponds to 1 water (H2O) molecules pfu. A quantitative chemical analysis using electron probe was undertaken. The Raman spectrum of datolite is characterized by bands at 917 and 1077 cm−1 assigned to the symmetric stretching modes of BO and SiO tetrahedra. A very intense Raman band is observed at 3498 cm−1 assigned to the stretching vibration of the OH units in the structure of datolite. BOH out-of-plane vibrations are characterized by the infrared band at 782 cm−1. The vibrational spectra are based upon the structure of datolite based on sheets of four- and eight-membered rings of alternating SiO4 and BO3(OH) tetrahedra with the sheets bonded together by calcium atoms.

Ammonium perchlorate (AP) has been coated with polystyrene (PS), cellulose acetate (CA), Novolak resin and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) by a solvent/nonsolvent method which makes use of the coacervation principle. The effect of polymer coating on AP decomposition has been studied using thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Polymer coating results in the desensitization of AP decomposition. The observed effect has been attributed to the thermophysical and thermochemical properties of the polymer used for coating. The effect of polystyrene coating on thermal decomposition of aluminium perchlorate trihydrazinate and ammonium nitrate as well as on the combustion of AP-CTPB composite propellants has been studied.

The salicylato complex of cobalt was synthesized and its structure established to be [Co(sal)2] · 4 H2O, where, sal =, from elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, cryoscopy and conductivity. The X-ray diffractogram of the complex has been given. Thermal decomposition has been studied in air by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. TG shows three main steps of decomposition. The intermediates formed at various stages were collected and analysed. From the TG results and chemical analysis of the intermediates, a mechanism has been proposed for the thermal decomposition of the complex, leading to the oxide formation in the final stage.

A systematic investigation on glass formation in the PbF2-InF3-BaHPO4 ternary system has been carried out. These glasses have characterized by IR spectra, Raman spectra and differential thermal analysis. The results show that the structure of these glasses is mainly affected by BaHPO4 and InF3 contents. With decreasing BaHPO4 content, the glass structure gradually transforms from metaphosphate to polyphosphate. When InF3 content is low, it mainly acts as network modifier, when its content is high; it enters glass matrix and forms In(O,F)(6) groups connecting the polymerized phosphorus oxygen species. PbF2 mainly acts as network modifier in this system. Systematic variations of the glass transition temperature and the thermal stability index agree well with these results. The most stable glass with Delta T = 230 degrees C and S = 21.79 K is obtained. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Yb3+Er3+-codoped chloride-modified germanate-bismuth-lead glasses have been synthesized by the conventional melting and quenching method. Structural and thermal stability properties have been obtained on the basis of the Raman spectra and differential thermal analysis, which indicate that the PbCl2 addition has an important influence on the phonon density of states, maximum phonon energy, and thermal stability of host glasses. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and quantum efficiencies were calculated on the basis of the Judd-Ofelt theory and lifetime measurements. For the 1.53 mu m emission band, the full widths at the half-maximum increase and peak wavelengths are blueshifted with increasing PbCl2 content. Moreover, the effect of the PbCl2 addition on the phonon density of states, OH- content, and upconversion luminescence has been discussed and evaluated. Our results reveal that, with increasing PbCl2 content, the decrease of phonon density and OH- content contributes more to the enhanced upconversion emissions than that of maximum phonon energy. New types of templates and novel interactive mechanisms between template and framework are very important for creating porous materials. In this work, by using neutral dibutyl methylphosphonate as a template, an inorganic-organic hybrid mesoporous material, aluminum methylphosphonate, was prepared. The as-synthesized material was studied by P-31 magnetic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), Al-27 MAS NMR, C-13 CP/MAS, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and transmission electron microscopy. After thermal treatment at 673 K and 10 mmHg for 2 h, hybrid mesoporous foam was obtained. The transformation process was investigated by FT-IR. TG-DTA results indicate that the methyl group bonded to the framework keeps intact up to 792 K under air and 823 K under nitrogen. The characterization results from nitrogen gas adsorption-desorption measurements show that the BET surface area and the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda desorption cumulative pore volume of the foam are 90 m(2) g(-1) and 0.32 cm(3) g(-1) respectively. Novel one-dimensional europium benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate compressed nanorods have been synthesized oil it large scale through direct precipitation in solution phase under moderate conditions without the assistance of any surfactant, catalyst, or template. The obtained nanorods have widths of about 50-100 not, thicknesses of 10-20 nm, and lengths ranging from a few hundred nanometers to several micrometers. X-ray powder diffraction. elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared Studies, and thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis show that the nanorods have the structural formula of Eu(1,3,5-BTC)center dot 6H(2)O. Upon UV excitation, these nanorods exhibit a highly efficient luminescence. which comes from the Eu3+ ions. Moreover, Eu2O3 nanorods Could also be obtained via a thermal decomposition method using the corresponding complex as a precursor. This synthetic route is promising for the preparation of other one-dimensional crystalline nanomaterials because of its simplicity and the low cost of the starting reagents.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was first used as chelating agent and metal nitrates as precursor of ferrite in the fabrication of nanocrystalline Ni0.65Zn0.35Cu0.1Fe1.9O4 particles by the sol-gel method. The thermal decomposition process of dried gel was studied by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and infrared spectra (IR). The structural and magnetic properties of resultant particles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The dependence of the decomposition of dried gel, the formation of spinel structured NiZnCu ferrite, the sizes of annealed particles, the saturation magnetization and coercivity of annealed particles on annealing temperature is presented.
