Glia may be important in the pathology of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in several ways: (1) glial cells could be involved in the formation of prion protein (PrPsc) deposits, (2) PrPsc deposits could stimulate the production of astrocytes and microglia, (3) PrPsc deposits could damage adjacent glial cells, and (4) glial cells could remove PrPsc from the brain. To investigate the significance of glial cells in vCJD, the relationships between PrPsc deposits and their associated glia, together with neurons and blood vessels, was studied in six cases of vCJD. Multicentric PrPsc deposits were the largest and least frequent type of deposit observed and were more commonly associated with glial cells, neuronal perikarya, and blood vessels than the more common diffuse and florid PrPsc deposits. Diffuse PrPsc deposits were more frequently associated with glial cells and neurons than the florid deposits. The ratio of astrocytes to oligodendrocytes adjacent to PrPsc deposits was similar to normal brain but the ratio of astrocytes and oligodendrocytes to microglia was less than in normal brain. The intensity of immunolabelling of multicentric PrPsc deposits was positively correlated with the presence of associated vacuoles and negatively correlated with the frequency of microglia. The patterns of correlation between deposit morphology and associated glial cells and neurons were similar for the diffuse and florid type PrPsc deposits. Deposit size was most consistently correlated with the number of associated neurons and vacuoles. The data suggest in vCJD: (1) no evidence that glia were necessary for the formation of PrPsc deposits, (2) an increase in microglia which may be an attempt to remove PrPsc from the bain, and (3) PrPsc deposits could affect adjacent astrocytes and damage the blood brain barrier (BBB).

In this study, we investigated the relationship between vegetation and modern-pollen rain along the elevational gradient of Mount Paggeo. We apply multivariate data analysis to assess the relationship between vegetation and modern-pollen rain and quantify the representativeness of forest zones. This study represents the first statistical analysis of pollen-vegetation relationship along an elevational gradient in Greece. Hence, this paper improves confidence in interpretation of palynological records from north-eastern Greece and may refine past climate reconstructions for a more accurate comparison of data and modelling. Numerical classification and ordination were performed on pollen data to assess differences among plant communities that beech (Fagus sylvatica) dominates or co-dominates. The results show a strong relationship between altitude, arboreal cover, human impact and variations in pollen and nonpollen palynomorph taxa percentages.

The broad objective of the study was to better understand anxiety among adolescents in Kolkata city, India. Specifically, the study compared anxiety across gender, school type, socio-economic background and mothers’ employment status. The study also examined adolescents’ perceptions of quality time with their parents. A group of 460 adolescents (220 boys and 240 girls), aged 13-17 years were recruited to participate in the study via a multi-stage sampling technique. The data were collected using a self-report semi-structured questionnaire and a standardized psychological test, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Results show that anxiety was prevalent in the sample with 20.1% of boys and 17.9% of girls found to be suffering from high anxiety. More boys were anxious than girls (p<0.01). Adolescents from Bengali medium schools were more anxious than adolescents from English medium schools (p<0.01). Adolescents belonging to the middle class (middle socio-economic group) suffered more anxiety than those from both high and low socio-economic groups (p<0.01). Adolescents with working mothers were found to be more anxious (p<0.01). Results also show that a substantial proportion of the adolescents perceived they did not receive quality time from fathers (32.1%) and mothers (21.3%). A large number of them also did not feel comfortable to share their personal issues with their parents (60.0% for fathers and 40.0% for mothers).

A branch and bound type algorithm is presented in this paper to the problem of finding a transportation schedule which minimises the total transportation cost, where the transportation cost over each route is assumed to be a piecewice linear continuous convex function with increasing slopes. The algorithm is an extension of the work done by Balachandran and Perry, in which the transportation cost over each route is assumed to beapiecewise linear discontinuous function with decreasing slopes. A numerical example is solved illustrating the algorithm.

The C-60 dianion is used to reduce tetrachloroauric acid (HAuCl4) for the first time; three-dimensional C-60 bound gold (Au-C-60) nanoclusters are obtained from C-60-directed self-assembly of gold nanoparticles due to the strong affinities of Au-C-60 and C-60-C-60. The process was monitored in situ by UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy. The resulting Au-C-60 nanoclusters were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and FT-IR and Raman spectroscopies.

We reported a simple method to synthesize gold nanoparticles (NPs) by photoreducing HAuCl4 in acetic acid solution in the presence of type I collagen. It was found that the collagen takes an important role in the formation of gold NPs. The introduction of collagen made the shape of the synthesized gold nanocrystals change from triangular and hexangular gold nanoplates to size-uniform NPs. On the other hand, thanks to the special characters of collagen molecules, such as its linear nanostructure, are positively charged when the pH < 7, and the excellent self-assembly ability, photoreduced gold NPs were assembled onto the collagen chains and formed gold NPs films and networks. A typical probe molecule, 4-aminothiophenol, was used to test the surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity of these gold NPs films and networks and the results indicated good Raman activity on these substrates.

This paper deals with the relations between the Machangqing rockbody which corresponds to the A-type granites and porphyry copper mineralization in terms of petrochemistry, trace element geochemistry, fluid inclusion geochemistry and isotope geochemistry. The results show that the Machangqing porphyry copper deposit was formed from the fluid predominated by mag-matic fluid. This kind of ore-forming fluid was just differentiated from the magma responsible for the A-type granites. therefore,as viewed from whereer they contain water or not,the A-type granites can,at least,be divided into two types: water-bearing and water-free.The water-bearing A-type granites can serve as the host ofporphyry copper deposits under certain geological conditions.

Background: This follow-up study aims to determine the physical parameters which govern the differential radiosensitization capacity of two tumor cell lines and one immortalized normal cell line to 1.9 nm gold nanoparticles. In addition to comparing the uptake potential, localization, and cytotoxicity of 1.9 nm gold nanoparticles, the current study also draws on comparisons between nanoparticle size and total nanoparticle uptake based on previously published data.

Methods: We quantified gold nanoparticle uptake using atomic emission spectroscopy and imaged intracellular localization by transmission electron microscopy. Cell growth delay and clonogenic assays were used to determine cytotoxicity and radiosensitization potential, respectively. Mechanistic data were obtained by Western blot, flow cytometry, and assays for reactive oxygen species.

Results: Gold nanoparticle uptake was preferentially observed in tumor cells, resulting in an increased expression of cleaved caspase proteins and an accumulation of cells in sub G1 phase. Despite this, gold nanoparticle cytotoxicity remained low, with immortalized normal cells exhibiting an LD50 concentration approximately 14 times higher than tumor cells. The surviving fraction for gold nanoparticle-treated cells at 3 Gy compared with that of untreated control cells indicated a strong dependence on cell type in respect to radiosensitization potential.

Conclusion: Gold nanoparticles were most avidly endocytosed and localized within cytoplasmic vesicles during the first 6 hours of exposure. The lack of significant cytotoxicity in the absence of radiation, and the generation of gold nanoparticle-induced reactive oxygen species provide a potential mechanism for previously reported radiosensitization at megavoltage energies.
