Single mode Er-doped pi-phase-shifted distributed feedback fibre grating laser

A novel method incorporating the shielded method and the post-processing method has been proposed to fabricate the pi-phase-shilted fibre grating. Then an Er-doped pi-phase-shifted distributed feedback fibre grating laser has been fabricated using the grating. The laser threshold is 20 mW. When pumped with 90 mW light at 980 nm, the laser gives an output of 1.1 mW. Its signal-to-noise ratio is better than 60 dB. It is demonstrated that the laser is single mode operation by means of a Fabry-Perot scanning interferometer.

Superresolution by three-zone pure phase plate with 0, pi, 0 phase variation

Superresolution is very important in imaging and optical storage systems, and has attracted much attention. In this article, concentric three-zone phase plate with 0, pi, 0 phase variation has been investigated numerically to show that this kind of phase plate can be used to obtain three-dimensional superresolution. In addition, the number of intensity maximum, focal depth, focal shift, full-width half-maximum, and relative intensity of side lobe are listed for different radii of the phase zones, which paves the way for design of the phase plate. Therefore, one can choose values of radii for desired intensity distribution in focal region, such as for the purpose of radial superresolution with high focal depth in optical storage. Argumentação na mídia impressa piauiense e na do Sudeste: editoriais do jornal O Dia (Teresina-PI) e Folha de São Paulo

Neste trabalho, é nosso objetivo principal investigar o discurso argumentativo no gênero editorial dos jornais O Dia e Folha de São Paulo, estabelecendo comparações. É intuito, também, explorar o posicionamento do articulista frente aos argumentos levantados no texto, as vozes que permeiam os editoriais, bem como o papel dos conectivos no discurso editorialista. Esta pesquisa está dividida em quatro capítulos: o primeiro, que trata de gêneros textuais e tipologia textual; o segundo, que compara o jornalismo do Sudeste com o do Piauí; o terceiro, que expõe sobre o modo argumentativo, e o quarto e último, que trata da análise dos editoriais. O corpus do trabalho consta de 20 editoriais, sendo que dez são do jornal teresinense O Dia e dez da Folha de São Paulo. Os editoriais do jornal O Dia foram coletados entre setembro e dezembro de 2011, e os da Folha, entre junho e setembro deste ano. Para subsidiar nossas observações, elegemos, como aporte teórico, as ideias defendidas, principalmente, por Bakthin ([1979], 2003)), Marcuschi (2008, 2010), Koch (2011), Perelman e Olbrechts-Tyteca (2005), Charaudeau (1992, 1997, 2006, 2010), Ducrot e Anscombre (1983)

Triel Bonds, pi-Hole-pi-Electrons Interactions in Complexes of Boron and Aluminium Trihalides and Trihydrides with Acetylene and Ethylene

MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations were performed on complexes of aluminium and boron trihydrides and trihalides with acetylene and ethylene. These complexes are linked through triel bonds where the triel center (B or Al) is characterized by the Lewis acid properties through its -hole region while -electrons of C2H2 or C2H4 molecule play the role of the Lewis base. Some of these interactions possess characteristics of covalent bonds, i.e., the Al--electrons links as well as the interaction in the BH3-C2H2 complex. The triel--electrons interactions are classified sometimes as the 3c-2e bonds. In the case of boron trihydrides, these interactions are often the preliminary stages of the hydroboration reaction. The Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules as well as the Natural Bond Orbitals approach are applied here to characterize the -hole--electrons interactions.

An environmentally based growth model that uses finite difference calculus with maximum likelihood method: its application to the brackish water bivalve Corbicula japonica in Lake Abashiri, Japan

We present a growth analysis model that combines large amounts of environmental data with limited amounts of biological data and apply it to Corbicula japonica. The model uses the maximum-likelihood method with the Akaike information criterion, which provides an objective criterion for model selection. An adequate distribution for describing a single cohort is selected from available probability density functions, which are expressed by location and scale parameters. Daily relative increase rates of the location parameter are expressed by a multivariate logistic function with environmental factors for each day and categorical variables indicating animal ages as independent variables. Daily relative increase rates of the scale parameter are expressed by an equation describing the relationship with the daily relative increase rate of the location parameter. Corbicula japonica grows to a modal shell length of 0.7 mm during the first year in Lake Abashiri. Compared with the attain-able maximum size of about 30 mm, the growth of juveniles is extremely slow because their growth is less susceptible to environmental factors until the second winter. The extremely slow growth in Lake Abashiri could be a geographical genetic variation within C. japonica.

Implementation of a PI phase angle controller for finite element analysis of the BDFM

Time-stepping finite element analysis of the BDFM for a specific load condition is shown to be a challenging problem because the excitation required cannot be predetermined and the BDFM is not open loops stable for all operating conditions. A simulation approach using feedback control to set the torque and stabilise the BDFM is presented together with implementation details. The performance of the simulation approach is demonstrated with an example and computed results are compared with measurements.

Design of diesel smoke feedback control using a combination of PI control algorithm and performance optimization

A novel smoke sensor was used to realize smoke feedback control on a diesel engine. The controller design based on a combination of PI control algorithm and the engine performance optimization is described. Experimental results demonstrate how this control system behave to meet both of the speed and smoke requirements during engine transients.

Exact quantum master equation via the calculus on path integrals

An exact quantum master equation formalism is constructed for the efficient evaluation of quantum non-Markovian dissipation beyond the weak system-bath interaction regime in the presence of time-dependent external field. A novel truncation scheme is further proposed and compared with other approaches to close the resulting hierarchically coupled equations of motion. The interplay between system-bath interaction strength, non-Markovian property, and required level of hierarchy is also demonstrated with the aid of simple spin-boson systems. Visible blind p(+)-pi-n(-)-n(+) ultraviolet photodetectors based on 4H-SiC homoepilayers

p(+)-pi-n(-)-n(+) ultraviolet photodetectors based on 4H-SiC homoepilayers have been presented. The growth of the 4H-SiC homoepilayers was carried out in a LPCVD system. The size of the active area of the photodetectors was 300 x 300 mu m(2). The dark and illuminated I-V characteristics had been measured at reverse biases form 0 to 20 V at room temperature, and the illuminated current was at least two orders of magnitude than that of dark current below 13 V bias. The peak value zones of the photoresponse were located at 280-310 nm at different reverse biases, and the peak value located at 300 nm was 100 times greater than the cut-off response value in 380 nm at a bias of 10V, which showed the device had good visible blind performance. A small red-shift about 5 nm on the peak responsivity occurred when reverse bias increased from 5 to 15 V. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An automata theoretic decision procedure for the propositional mu-calculus

The propositional mu-calculus is a propositional logic of programs which incorporates a least fixpoint operator and subsumes the propositional dynamic logic of Fischer and Ladner, the infinite looping construct of Streett, and the game logic of Parikh. We give an elementary time decision procedure, using a reduction to the emptiness problem for automata on infinite trees. A small model theorem is obtained as a corollary.
