The paper considers the existence and uniqueness of almost automorphic mild solutions to some classes of first-order partial neutral functional-differential equations. Sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of almost automorphic mild solutions to the above-mentioned equations are obtained. As an application, a first-order boundary value problem arising in control systems is considered. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All fights reserved.

There are few studies on the relationship between the morphology of acute tubular necrosis (ATN) in native kidneys and late functional recovery. Eighteen patients with acute renal failure (ARF) who had undergone renal biopsy were studied. All had the histological diagnosis of ATN and were followed for at least six months. Clinical characteristics of ARF were analyzed, and histological features were semi-quantitatively evaluated (tubular atrophy, interstitial inflammatory infiltrate, interstitial fibrosis, and ATN). According to the maximal GFR achieved during the follow-up, patients were divided into two groups: complete recovery (GFR >= 90 mL/min/1.73 m(2)) and partial recovery (GFR < 90 mL/min/1.73 m(2)). Only 39% of the patients achieved complete recovery. Patients with partial recovery achieved their maximal GFR (63 +/- 9 mL/min/1.73 m(2)) 37 +/- 14 months after ARF, a period of time similar to those patients with complete recovery (i.e., 54 +/- 22 months). Patients with partial recovery had more severe ARF: oliguria was more frequent (90 versus 17%, p < 0.01), and they had higher peak creatinine (13.85 +/- 1.12 versus 8.95 +/- 1.30 mg/dL, p = 0.01), and longer hospitalization (45 +/- 7 versus 20 +/- 4 days, p = 0.03). No single histological parameter was associated with partial recovery, but the sum of all was when expressed as an injury index [4.00 (2.73-5.45) versus 2.00 (1.25-3.31), p < 0.05]. In conclusion, among patients with atypical ATN course, those with more severe ARF and tubule-interstitial lesions are more prone to partial recovery.

In human heart there is now evidence for the involvement of four beta-adrenoceptor populations, three identical to the recombinant beta(1)-, beta(2)- and beta(3)-adrenoceptors, and a fourth as yet uncloned putative beta-adrenoceptor population, which we designate provisionally as the cardiac putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor. This review described novel features of beta-adrenoceptors as modulators of cardiac systolic and diastolic function. We also discuss evidence for modulation by unoccupied beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptors. Human cardiac and recombinant beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptors are both mainly coupled to adenylyl cyclase through Gs protein, the latter more tightly than the former. Activation of both human beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptors not only increases cardiac force during systole but also hastens relaxation through cyclic AMP-dependent phosphorylation of phospholamban and troponin I, thereby facilitating diastolic function. Furthermore, both beta(1) and beta(2)-adrenoceptors can mediate experimental arrhythmias in human cardiac preparations elicited by noradrenaline and adrenaline. Human ventricular beta(3)-adrenoceptors appear to be coupled to a pertussis toxin-sensitive protein (Gi?). beta(3)-Adrenoceptor-selective agonists shorten the action potential and cause cardiodepression, suggesting direct coupling of a Gi protein to a K+ channel. In a variety of species, including man, cardiac putative beta(4)-adrenoceptors mediate cardiostimulant effects of non-conventional partial agonists, i.e. high affinity beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptor blockers that cause agonist effects at concentrations considerably higher than those that block these receptors. Putative beta(4)-adrenoceptors appear to be coupled positively to a cyclic AMP-dependent cascade and can undergo some desensitisation.

1. Evidence for a 'putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor' originated over 20 years ago when cardiostimulant effects were observed to nonconventional partial agonists, These agonists were originally described as beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptor antagonists; however, they cause cardiostimulant effects at much higher concentrations than those required to block beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptors. Cardiostimulant effects of non-conventional partial agonists have been observed in mouse, rat, guinea-pig, cat, ferret and human heart tissues, 2. The receptor is expressed in several heart regions, including the sinoatrial node, atrium and ventricle, 3. The receptor is resistant to blockade by most antagonists that possess high affinity for beta(1)- and beta(2)- adrenoceptors, but is blocked with moderate affinity by (-)-bupranolol and CGP 20712A. 4. The receptor is pharmacologically distinct from the beta(3)-adrenoceptor. Micromolar concentrations of beta(3)-adrenoceptor agonists have no agonist or blocking activity, The receptor is also resistant to blockade by a beta(3)-adrenoceptor-selective antagonist. 5. The receptor mediates increases in cAMP levels and cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PK) A activity in cardiac tissues. Phosphodiesterase inhibition potentiates the positive chronotropic and inotropic effects of non-conventional partial agonists. 6. The receptor mediates hastening of atrial and ventricular relaxation, which is consistent with involvement of a cAMP-dependent pathway. 7. The non-conventional partial agonist (-)-[H-3]-CGP 12177A labels the cardiac putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor, Non-conventional partial agonists compete for binding with affinities that are closely similar to their agonist potencies, Catecholamines compete for binding in a stereoselective manner with a rank order of affinity of (-)-R0363 > (-)-isoprenaline > (-)-noradrenaline greater than or equal to (-)-adrenaline much greater than (-)-isoprenaline, suggesting that catecholamines can interact with the receptor. 8. The putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor appears to be coupled to the G(s)-adenylyl cyclase system, which could serve as a guide to its future cloning, Activation of the receptor may plausibly improve diastolic function but could also mediate arrhythmias.

Hepatic ischemia followed by reperfusion (IR) results in mild to severe remote organ injury. Oxidative stress and nitric oxide (NO) seem to be involved in the IR injury. Our aim was to investigate the effects of liver I/R on hepatic function and lipid peroxidation, leukocyte infiltration and NO synthase (NOS) immunostaining in the lung and the kidney. We randomized 24 male Wistar rats into 3 groups: 1) control; 2) 60 minutes of partial (70%) liver 1 and 2 hours of global liver R; and 3) 60 minutes of partial (70%) liver I and 6 hours of global liver R. Groups 2 and 3 showed significant increases in plasma alanine and aspartate aminotransferase levels and in tissue malondialdehyde and myeloperoxidase contents. In the kidney, positive endothelial NOS (eNOS) staining was significantly decreased in group 3 compared with group 1. However, staining for inducible NOS (iNOS) and neuronal NOS (nNOS) did not differ among the groups. In the lung, the staining for eNOS and iNOS did not show significant differences among the groups; no positive nNOS staining was observed in any group. These results suggested that partial liver I followed by global liver R induced liver, kidney, and lung injuries characterized by neutrophil sequestration and increased oxidative stress. In addition, we supposed that the reduced NO formation via eNOS may be implicated in the moderate impairment of renal function, observed by others at 24 hours after liver I/R.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) causes a slow progressive degeneration of the immune system which eventually leads to a disease comparable to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in humans. FIV has extensive sequence variation, a typical feature of lentiviruses. Sequence analysis showed that diversity was not evenly distributed throughout the genome, but was greatest in the envelope gene, env. The virus enters host cells via a sequential interaction, initiated by the envelope glycoprotein (env) binding the primary receptor molecule CD134 and followed by a subsequent interaction with chemokine co-receptor CXCR4. The purpose of this study was to isolate and characterize isolates of FIV from an open shelter in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The separated PBMC from 11 positive cats were co-cultured with MYA-1 cells. Full-length viral env glycoprotein genes were amplified and determined. Chimeric feline x human CD134 receptors were used to investigate the receptor utilization of 17 clones from Brazilian isolates of Fly. Analyses of the sequence present of molecular clones showed that all clones grouped within subtype B. In contrast to the virulent primary isolate FIV-GL8, expression of the first cysteine-rich domain (CRD1) of feline CD134 in the context of human CD134 was sufficient for optimal receptor function for all Brazilian FIV isolates tested. Electrical conductivity versus dopant ionic radius studies in zirconia- and ceria-based, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrolyte systems have shown that oxygen-ion conductivity is highest when the host and dopant ions are similar in size [J. Am. Ceram. Soc. 48 (1965) 286; Solid State Ionics 37 (1989) 67; Solid State Ionics 5 (1981) 547]. Under these conditions, it is thought that the conduction paths within the crystal lattice become less distorted [Solid State Ionics 8 (1983) 201]. In this study, binary ZrO2-M2O3 unit cells were expanded, via the partial substitution of Ce+4 for Zr+4 into the lattice, in an attempt to identify new, ternary, zirconia/ceria-based electrolyte systems with enhanced electrical conductivity. The compositions Zr0.75Ce0.08M0.17O1.92 (M = Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Y, Yb, Sc) were prepared using traditional solid state techniques. Bulk phase characterisation and precise lattice parameter measurements were performed with X-ray diffraction techniques. Four-probe DC conductivity measurements between 400 and 900 degreesC showed that the dopant-ion radius influenced electrical conductivity. The conductivity versus dopant-ion radius trends previously observed in zirconia-based, binary systems are clearly apparent in the ternary systems investigated in this study. The addition of ceria was found to have a negative influence on the electrical conductivity over the temperature range 400-900 degreesC. It is suggested that distortion of the oxygen-ion conduction path by the presence of the larger M+3 and Ce+4 species (relative to Zr+4) is the reason for the decreasing electrical conductivity as a function of increasing dopant size and ceria addition, respectively. In the last decades considerations about equipments' availability became an important issue, as well as its dependence on components characteristics such as reliability and maintainability. This is particularly of outstanding importance if one is dealing with high risk industrial equipments, where these factors play an important and fundamental role in risk management when safety or huge economic values are in discussion. As availability is a function of reliability, maintainability, and maintenance support activities, the main goal is to improve one or more of these factors. This paper intends to show how maintainability can influence availability and present a methodology to select the most important attributes for maintainability using a partial Multi Criteria Decision Making (pMCDM). Improvements in maintainability can be analyzed assuming it as a probability related with a restore probability density function [g(t)].

Tantalum oxynitride thin films were produced by magnetron sputtering. The films were deposited usinga pure Ta target and a working atmosphere with a constant N2/O2ratio. The choice of this constant ratiolimits the study concerning the influence of each reactive gas, but allows a deeper understanding of theaspects related to the affinity of Ta to the non-metallic elements and it is economically advantageous. This work begins by analysing the data obtained directly from the film deposition stage, followed bythe analysis of the morphology, composition and structure. For a better understanding regarding theinfluence of the deposition parameters, the analyses are presented by using the following criterion: thefilms were divided into two sets, one of them produced with grounded substrate holder and the otherwith a polarization of −50 V. Each one of these sets was produced with different partial pressure of thereactive gases P(N2+ O2). All the films exhibited a O/N ratio higher than the N/O ratio in the depositionchamber atmosphere. In the case of the films produced with grounded substrate holder, a strong increaseof the O content is observed, associated to the strong decrease of the N content, when P(N2+ O2) is higherthan 0.13 Pa. The higher Ta affinity for O strongly influences the structural evolution of the films. Grazingincidence X-ray diffraction showed that the lower partial pressure films were crystalline, while X-rayreflectivity studies found out that the density of the films depended on the deposition conditions: thehigher the gas pressure, the lower the density. Firstly, a dominant -Ta structure is observed, for lowP(N2+ O2); secondly a fcc-Ta(N,O) structure, for intermediate P(N2+ O2); thirdly, the films are amorphousfor the highest partial pressures. The comparison of the characteristics of both sets of produced TaNxOyfilms are explained, with detail, in the text.

OBJECTIVE: To study mitral valve function in the postoperative period after correction of the partial form of atrioventricular septal defect. METHODS: Fifty patients underwent surgical correction of the partial form of atrioventricular septal defect. Their mean age was 11.8 years and 62% of the patients were males. Preoperative echocardiography showed moderate and severe mitral insufficiency in 44% of the patients. The mitral valve cleft was sutured in 45 (90%) patients (group II - GII). Echocardiographies were performed in the early postoperative period, and 6 and 12 months after hospital discharge. RESULTS: The patients who had some type of arrhythmia in the postoperative period had ostium primum atrial septal defect of a larger size (2.74 x 2.08 cm). All 5 patients in group I (GI), who did not undergo closure of the cleft, had a competent mitral valve or mild mitral insufficiency in the preoperative period. One of these patients began to have moderate mitral insufficiency in the postoperative period. On the other hand, in GII, 88.8% and 82.2% of the patients had competent mitral valve or mild mitral insufficiency in the early and late postoperative periods, respectively. CONCLUSION: The mitral valve cleft was repaired in 90% of cases. Echocardiography revealed competent mitral valve or mild mitral insufficiency in 88.8% and 82.2% of GII patients in the early and late postoperative periods, respectively.

This paper suggests a simple method based on Chebyshev approximation at Chebyshev nodes to approximate partial differential equations. The methodology simply consists in determining the value function by using a set of nodes and basis functions. We provide two examples. Pricing an European option and determining the best policy for chatting down a machinery. The suggested method is flexible, easy to program and efficient. It is also applicable in other fields, providing efficient solutions to complex systems of partial differential equations.
