Based on the morphology of workers, gynes and males, we revise the taxonomy of nominal taxa traditionally included by authors in the fungus-growing ant genus Mycetophylax. Our results indicate that Mycetophylax Emery (Myrmicocrypta brittoni Wheeler, 1907, type species, by designation of Emery, 1913; junior synonym of Cyphomyrmex conformis Mayr, 1884 by Kempf, 1962) includes M. conformis, M. simplex (Emery, 1888), and M. morschi (Emery, 1888) new combination (formerly in Cyphomyrmex), with several synonymies. Mycetophylax bruchi (Santschi, 1916) does not belong to the same genus and is diagnosed, in addition to other characters, by a psammophore arising at the anterior margin of the clypeus. For this species we are resurrecting from synonymy Paramycetophylax Kusnezov, 1956 (Mycetophylax bruchi as type species, by original designation, with M. cristulatus as its new synonym). Myrmicocrypta emeryi Forel, 1907 is the only attine in which females lack the median clypeal seta and have the antennal insertion areas very much enlarged and anteriorly produced, with the psammophore setae arising from the middle of the clypeus and not at its anterior margin as in Paramycetophylax. Notwithstanding its inclusion in Mycetophylax by recent authors, it is here recognized as belonging to a hitherto undescribed, thus far monotypic genus, Kalathomyrmex new genus (Myrmicocrypta emeryi as its type species, here designated). We redescribe workers, gynes and males of all species in the three genera and describe for the first time gynes of Mycetophylax conformis and M. simplex, males of M. simplex and M. morschi, and gynes of P. bruchi. Furthermore we present a key to the workers of the taxa treated here (most formerly included under the name Mycetophylax), a key to workers of the Mycetophylax in the revised sense, SEM pictures and high resolution AutoMontage(C) photographs of the species, along with maps of collection records and a summary of biological observations.

Mallodeta Butler and Erruca Walker, revalidated, are redescribed and revised. Mallodeta henceforth includes only its type-species, Glaucopis (Lycorea) clavata Walker, and Erruca is resurrected with seven species: E. deyrolii Walker (type-species), E. consors (Walker), new combination, E. erythrarchos (Walker), new combination, E. cardinalis (Hampson), new combination, E. hanga (Herrich-Schaffer), new combination, E. cruenta (Perty), new combination and E. sanguipuncta (Druce), new combination. Six new synonyms are established, four specific and two generic (junior synonyms in parentheses): Zygaena capistrata Fabricius (=Mallodeta cubana Gaede), Glaucopis (Lycorea) clavata Walker (=M. simplex Rothschild), Erruca deyrolii Walker (=Laemocharis aecyra Herrich-Schaffer and Glaucopis (Hyda) sortita Walker), and Erruca Walker (=Aristodaema Wallengren and Rezia Kirby). Lectotypes are designated to the following species: Erruca deyrolii Walker, Laemocharis deyrollei Herrich-Schaffer, Laemocharis hanga Herrich-Schaffer, Laemocharis aecyra Herrich-Schaffer, Laemocharis norma Herrich-Schaffer, Cosmosoma cardinalis Hampson and Mallodeta sanguipuncta Druce. Illustrations of adults and male and female genitalia of Mallodeta and Erruca are provided, as well as a key to the species of the latter.

(Taxonomic studies on Gloxinieae (Gesneriaceae) - nomenclatural notes). Gloxinia L'Her. is a genus that has undergone major changes since the reorganization of the tribe Gloxinieae in the last few decades. We here designate 15 lectotypes, indicate six illegitimate superfluous names, and propose one new combination for this group; comments about three species with uncertain identities are also included.

Nomenclatural and taxonomic notes are provided as the result of a taxonomic revision of Baccharis subgen. Tarchonanthoides, currently underway. A list of accepted species within the subgenus, their synonyms, and a revised sectional classification are presented. Protologues and types of previously published names have been reviewed. Currently 21 species and 10 synonyms are recognized within the subgenus. Morphologically, the species of the subgenus are classified into four sections: Canescentes (9 spp.), Coridifoliae (8 spp.), Curitybensis (2 spp.), and Tarchonanthoides (2 spp.). A new combination and status is proposed to B. coridifolia subsp. bicolor, B. uleana is assigned to subgen. Tarchonanthoides, and lectotypes are designated for B. artemisioides, B. curitybensis, B. erigeroides var. dusenii, B. gibertii, B. patens, B. psammophila and B. squarrosa, most of them providing 'second-step' lectotypes.

Recent studies of the large cheilostome bryozoan genus Scrupocellaria have shown a greater degree of taxonomically informative morphological variation in zooids, opesia, and polymorphic structures than previously recognized. Only one subgenus has been named within the genus, Retiscrupocellaria d'Hondt, 1988, erected for Scrupocellaria jolloisii. In this work we further analyse S. jolloisii and its related species, resurrecting an earlier genus name, Licornia van Beneden, 1850 for Licornia jolloisii, and nine relatives, L. annectens, L. cervicornis, L. cyclostoma, L. diadema, L. ferox, L. gaspari, L. longispinosa, L. macropora, and L. prolata. Licornia jolloisii was originally described from the Red Sea, and most species of the genus occur in the Indo-Pacific region. The species, however, has now been found in the Western Atlantic, in the Florida Keys, US, and in Bahia de Todos Santos, Brazil.

Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) is an important reaction for understanding nucleon structure at low energies. By studying this process, the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon can be measured. These observables are a generalization of the already known polarizabilities and will permit theoretical models to be challenged on a new level. More specifically, there exist six generalized polarizabilities and in order to disentangle them all, a double polarization experiment must be performed. Within this work, the VCS reaction p(e,e p)gamma was measured at MAMI using the A1 Collaboration three spectrometer setup with Q2=0.33 (GeV/c)2. Using the highly polarized MAMI beam and a recoil proton polarimeter, it was possible to measure both the VCS cross section and the double polarization observables. Already in 2000, the unpolarized VCS cross section was measured at MAMI. In this new experiment, we could confirm the old data and furthermore the double polarization observables were measured for the first time. The data were taken in five periods between 2005 and 2006. In this work, the data were analyzed to extract the cross section and the proton polarization. For the analysis, a maximum likelihood algorithm was developed together with the full simulation of all the analysis steps. The experiment is limited by the low statistics due mainly to the focal plane proton polarimeter efficiency. To overcome this problem, a new determination and parameterization of the carbon analyzing power was performed. The main result of the experiment is the extraction of a new combination of the generalized polarizabilities using the double polarization observables.

We investigated the prevalence of comedications and PDDIs within a large HIV cohort, and their effect on ART efficacy and tolerability.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Phenotyping cocktails use a combination of cytochrome P450 (CYP)-specific probe drugs to simultaneously assess the activity of different CYP isoforms. To improve the clinical applicability of CYP phenotyping, the main objectives of this study were to develop a new cocktail based on probe drugs that are widely used in clinical practice and to test whether alternative sampling methods such as collection of dried blood spots (DBS) or saliva could be used to simplify the sampling process. METHODS In a randomized crossover study, a new combination of commercially available probe drugs (the Basel cocktail) was tested for simultaneous phenotyping of CYP1A2, CYP2B6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6 and CYP3A4. Sixteen subjects received low doses of caffeine, efavirenz, losartan, omeprazole, metoprolol and midazolam in different combinations. All subjects were genotyped, and full pharmacokinetic profiles of the probe drugs and their main metabolites were determined in plasma, dried blood spots and saliva samples. RESULTS The Basel cocktail was well tolerated, and bioequivalence tests showed no evidence of mutual interactions between the probe drugs. In plasma, single timepoint metabolic ratios at 2 h (for CYP2C19 and CYP3A4) or at 8 h (for the other isoforms) after dosing showed high correlations with corresponding area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) ratios (AUC0-24h parent/AUC0-24h metabolite) and are proposed as simple phenotyping metrics. Metabolic ratios in dried blood spots (for CYP1A2 and CYP2C19) or in saliva samples (for CYP1A2) were comparable to plasma ratios and offer the option of minimally invasive or non-invasive phenotyping of these isoforms. CONCLUSIONS This new combination of phenotyping probe drugs can be used without mutual interactions. The proposed sampling timepoints have the potential to facilitate clinical application of phenotyping but require further validation in conditions of altered CYP activity. The use of DBS or saliva samples seems feasible for phenotyping of the selected CYP isoforms.

A novel staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) composite island (SCCmecAI16-SCCczrAI16-CI) was identified in Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. Four integration site sequences for SCC subdivided the 60,734-bp island into 41,232-bp SCCmecAI16, 19,400-bp SCCczrAI16, and 102-bp SCC-likeAI16 elements. SCCmecAI16 represents a new combination of ccrA1B3 genes with a class A mec complex. SCCczrAI16 contains ccrA1B6 and genes related to restriction modification and heavy metal resistance. SCCmecAI16-SCCczrAI16-CI was found in methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius sequence type 112 (ST112) and ST111 isolated from dogs and veterinarians in Thailand.

The Palynology of two sections recovered during Leg 93 drilling by the Deep Sea Drilling Project in the continental rise along the western margin of the North Atlantic is reported. In Hole 603B at Site 603, the dinoflagellate stratigraphy indicates that the interval from Cores 603B-82 to 603B-26 ranges in age from late Berriasian to Santonian. The BlakeBahama Formation ranges from late Berriasian to Aptian. The Hatteras Formation ranges from Aptian to Cenomanian, although the uppermost part may be Turonian. Dinoflagellate evidence from the middle part of the Plantagenet Formation indicates an age from late Coniacian or early Santonian to Santonian within the interval of Cores 603B-28 to 603B-26. Magnetic polarity evidence of the stratigraphy of the Early Cretaceous for the western North Atlantic indicates a reliable correlation with the dinoflagellate zonation. The stratigraphic sequence of palynologically defined organic facies in carbonaceous claystone lithologies in Hole 603B shows that organic stratigraphic units consisting predominantly of fecal-pellet-derived, pelagic organic matter (xenomorphic facies) alternate with units consisting predominantly of terrigenous organic matter (tracheal and exinitic facies), corresponding to that described from other sites in the North Atlantic. A terrigenous organic facies is identified for the first time from the Plantagenet Formation. The claystone organic facies and major lithofacies are closely correlated. The tracheal and exinitic facies occur in carbonaceous terrigenous claystones and claystone turbidites associated with sandstone/siltstone terrigenous turbidites. The xenomorphic facies occurs in claystones within pelagic limestones lacking any turbidites, and in blackish, noncalcareous claystones which correlate in age with the marine-carbon-rich sapropels which are widespread in the North Atlantic Cenomanian. This facies also occurs with an admixture of terrigenous organic particles in the Blake-Bahama Formation, but the mixture is consistent with the submarine fan setting of this interval. The concentration of refractory organic matter (carbonized particles) in the micrinitic and carbonized tracheal facies is considered to be the result, at least in part, of the oxidation of sediment buried below a surface slowly accumulating pelagic clays below the carbonate compensation depth. The progressive increase in number of dinoflagellate species per stage through the Early Cretaceous (except for the late Barremian-Aptian) may have resulted indirectly from the generally progressive rise in global sea level during this time. At Site 605, the dinoflagellate stratigraphy across the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary is remarkably close to that published from the Maestrichtian and Danian of Denmark. The Maestrichtian/Danian boundary is placed precisely within Section 605-66-1 by dinoflagellate evidence, agreeing with that predicted by other microfossils. The new dinoflagellate-cyst-based genus, Pierceites and its new species P. schizocystis, and the new combination P. ( = Trithyrodinium) pentagonum (May) are proposed. Diacanthum hollisteri Habib, type species of Diacanthum, is emended to accommodat e cysts with the archeopyle formulas P3'', 2P2''-3'', 2P3''-4'', and 3P2''-3''-4''.

The biostratigraphic distribution and abundance of lower Oligocene to Pleistocene diatoms is documented from Holes 747A, 747B, 748B, 749B, and 751A drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 120 on the Kerguelen Plateau in the southeast Indian Ocean. The occurrence of middle and upper Eocene diatoms is also documented, but these are rare and occur in discrete intervals. The recovery of several Oligocene to Pleistocene sections with minimal coring gaps, relatively good magnetostratigraphic signatures, and mixed assemblages of both calcareous and siliceous microfossils makes the above four Leg 120 sites important biostratigraphic reference sections for the Southern Ocean and Antarctic continent. A high-resolution diatom zonation divides the last 36 m.y. into 45 zones and subzones. This zonation is built upon an existing biostratigraphic framework developed over the past 20 yr of Southern Ocean/Antarctic deep-sea coring and drilling. After the recent advances from diatom biostratigraphic studies on sediments from Legs 113, 114, 119, and 120, a zonal framework for the Southern Ocean is beginning to stabilize. The potential age resolution afforded by the high-diversity diatom assemblages in this region ranks among the highest of all fossil groups. In addition to the 46 datum levels that define the diatom zones and subzones, the approximate stratigraphic level, age, and magnetic anomaly correlative of more than 150 other diatom datums are determined or estimated. These total 73 datum levels for the Pliocene-Pleistocene, 67 for the Miocene, and 45 for the Oligocene. Greater stratigraphic resolution is possible as the less common and poorly documented species become better known. This high-resolution diatom stratigraphy, combined with good to moderately good magnetostratigraphic control, led to the recognition of more than 10 intervals where hiatuses dissect the Oligocene-Pleistocene section on the Kerguelen Plateau. The taxonomy and stratigraphy of pelagic Paleocene diatoms from ODP Sites 698, 700, and 702 and DSDP Site 524 in the South Atlantic and DSDP Site 214 in the Indian Ocean are presented, as well as paleogeographic and paleoecologic implications. Eleven new species and one new variety are described and one new combination is proposed: Coscinodiscus cruxii sp. nov. Grunowiella palaeocaenica var. alternans var. nov. Hemiaulusl beatus sp. nov. Hemiaulusl ciesielskii sp. nov. Hemiaulusl conicus sp. nov. Hemiaulus kristoffersenii sp. nov. Hemiaulus nocchiae sp. nov. Hemiaulusl oonkii sp. nov. Hemiaulusl velatus sp. nov. Triceratium gombosii sp. nov. Trochosira gracillima comb. nov. Trochosira marginata sp. nov. Trochosira radiata sp. nov. Hole 700B provides one of the most continuous diatomaceous Paleocene profiles known. Stratigraphic ranges of diatom species from this and other Southern Hemisphere sites are calibrated against calcareous microfossil zones. The first-appearance datums of Triceratium gombosii, Hemiaulus incurvus, and Triceratium mirabile in Paleocene deep-sea sediments are useful for regional stratigraphic correlations. Quantitative analysis of the biosiliceous microfossil groups (diatoms, silicoflagellates, radiolarians, and archaeomonadaceae) shows that preservation of diatoms is confined primarily to the upper Paleocene (planktonic foraminifer Zones P3 and P4 and calcareous nannofossil Zones upper NP5 to lower NP9). In the lower Paleocene only short intervals in Hole 700B are diatomaceous. A correlation between the degree of silica diagenesis and the calcium carbonate content of the sediment is not obvious. Diatom species analysis reflects changes in the paleoenvironment between island-related upwelling conditions with highly diverse and well-preserved diatom assemblages and less productive periods resulting in less wellpreserved diatom assemblages with a higher content of robust neritic diatoms.
