This paper focuses on the problem of tracking people through occlusions by scene objects. Rather than relying on models of the scene to predict when occlusions will occur as other researchers have done, this paper proposes a linear dynamic system that switches between two alternatives of the position measurement in order to handle occlusions as they occur. The filter automatically switches between a foot-based measure of position (assuming z = Q) to a head-based position measure (given the person's height) when an occlusion of the person's lower body occurs. No knowledge of the scene or its occluding objects is used. Unlike similar research [2, 14], the approach does not assume a fixed height for people and so is able to track humans through occlusions even when they change height during the occlusion. The approach is evaluated on three furnished scenes containing tables, chairs, desks and partitions. Occlusions range from occlusions of legs, occlusions whilst being seated and near-total occlusions where only the person's head is visible. Results show that the approach provides a significant reduction in false-positive tracks in a multi-camera environment, and more than halves the number of lost tracks in single monocular camera views.

For the last two decades, higher education institutions have been actively engaged in the use of online technology with the aim of transforming the way we teach and learn to improve students’ learning experiences and outcomes. However, despite significant investment in infrastructure and training and a wide-scale uptake of such technologies, the promised transformative effect on student learning is yet to be actualised outside of small pockets of innovation. In this paper, we argue that one of the factors contributing to lack of qualitative large-scale transformation is students’ lack of preparedness and experience in using online tools for learning purposes. Drawing on an ethnographic study of culturally diverse computing students and teachers within learning environments that blend online and face-to-face pedagogies, we argue that, although contemporary university students are largely operationally literate when using online learning tools, they often lack the cultural and critical skills required to use such technologies in a meaningful way to support powerful learning. We argue that, for online learning technologies to transform learning, students need to be supported to develop these higher order techno-literacy skills.

The improvement of devices provided by Nanotechnology has put forward new classes of sensors, called bio-nanosensors, which are very promising for the detection of biochemical molecules in a large variety of applications. Their use in lab-on-a-chip could gives rise to new opportunities in many fields, from health-care and bio-warfare to environmental and high-throughput screening for pharmaceutical industry. Bio-nanosensors have great advantages in terms of cost, performance, and parallelization. Indeed, they require very low quantities of reagents and improve the overall signal-to-noise-ratio due to increase of binding signal variations vs. area and reduction of stray capacitances. Additionally, they give rise to new challenges, such as the need to design high-performance low-noise integrated electronic interfaces. This thesis is related to the design of high-performance advanced CMOS interfaces for electrochemical bio-nanosensors. The main focus of the thesis is: 1) critical analysis of noise in sensing interfaces, 2) devising new techniques for noise reduction in discrete-time approaches, 3) developing new architectures for low-noise, low-power sensing interfaces. The manuscript reports a multi-project activity focusing on low-noise design and presents two developed integrated circuits (ICs) as examples of advanced CMOS interfaces for bio-nanosensors. The first project concerns low-noise current-sensing interface for DC and transient measurements of electrophysiological signals. The focus of this research activity is on the noise optimization of the electronic interface. A new noise reduction technique has been developed so as to realize an integrated CMOS interfaces with performance comparable with state-of-the-art instrumentations. The second project intends to realize a stand-alone, high-accuracy electrochemical impedance spectroscopy interface. The system is tailored for conductivity-temperature-depth sensors in environmental applications, as well as for bio-nanosensors. It is based on a band-pass delta-sigma technique and combines low-noise performance with low-power requirements.

Humans and animals face decision tasks in an uncertain multi-agent environment where an agent's strategy may change in time due to the co-adaptation of others strategies. The neuronal substrate and the computational algorithms underlying such adaptive decision making, however, is largely unknown. We propose a population coding model of spiking neurons with a policy gradient procedure that successfully acquires optimal strategies for classical game-theoretical tasks. The suggested population reinforcement learning reproduces data from human behavioral experiments for the blackjack and the inspector game. It performs optimally according to a pure (deterministic) and mixed (stochastic) Nash equilibrium, respectively. In contrast, temporal-difference(TD)-learning, covariance-learning, and basic reinforcement learning fail to perform optimally for the stochastic strategy. Spike-based population reinforcement learning, shown to follow the stochastic reward gradient, is therefore a viable candidate to explain automated decision learning of a Nash equilibrium in two-player games.

ABSTRACT. At present, there are many applications aimed at managing software projects. Every application intends to solve and facilitate tasks to managers and developers belonging to the development teams. Software development teams are usually made up of many different human and material resources, each of them developing a specific task in the project and sometimes without a full dedication to the project. Therefore, these resources have to be shared within the existing project portfolio. To meet this need in project management applications, the main requirement is to be able to manage several projects simultaneously (multi-project management), thus allowing resources to be shared within the existing project portfolio. At present, there are a large number of project management methodologies and the success of the project lies in choosing the most appropriate one. Among all the existing methodologies, this study has focused on the increasingly used agile project management methodologies. The study describes the way they work, their added value in comparison traditional methodologies, and which ones are more often used due to their already verified benefits and value in managing projects. Taking into account the above-mention characteristics, another key requirement when assessing the project management applications has been their capacity to support and implement project management agile methodologies. This study has also taken into account the type of application according to its installation and access. A difference is established between web applications – which require to be installed in a web server and are accessible from any device with a web browser – and desktop applications, which must be installed in the equipment to be used and are only accessible from this equipment. The study has assessed several applications by analyzing the compliance with the above-mentioned characteristics and has chosen three applications that provide the management of the project portfolio with an added value.

A parallel algorithm to remove impulsive noise in digital images using heterogeneous CPU/GPU computing is proposed. The parallel denoising algorithm is based on the peer group concept and uses an Euclidean metric. In order to identify the amount of pixels to be allocated in multi-core and GPUs, a performance analysis using large images is presented. A comparison of the parallel implementation in multi-core, GPUs and a combination of both is performed. Performance has been evaluated in terms of execution time and Megapixels/second. We present several optimization strategies especially effective for the multi-core environment, and demonstrate significant performance improvements. The main advantage of the proposed noise removal methodology is its computational speed, which enables efficient filtering of color images in real-time applications.

Graduates worldwide are increasingly entering a global workplace which will require them to operate across national and cultural boundaries. This paper discusses the need to ensure that all students are equipped to work within this increasingly complex multi-cultural environment. It examines the issues which occur in preparing students within a UK Higher Education environment so that they are able to operate effectively within the international work situations in which they find themselves. This research builds on earlier research, which found that the effectiveness of an individual to work across cultural boundaries, in terms of work and communication, was increased by the number of international or intercultural experiences that a person has. Using this as a premise, an intervention was designed which aimed to increase students’ awareness of intercultural differences and their ability to function effectively in multicultural groups. This paper analyses the effectiveness of this highly innovative training intervention. It concludes that it was an effective way of making students aware of some of the issues around cultural competence is groups. In fact, the training was seen as most effective by students in addressing issues round group dynamics. The training obviously changed the outlook of a number students who took part it. There are, however, a number of issues which need to be addressed the re-running the training. These are notably, at what time in a student’s academic career such intervention is given, its integration into the curriculum and managing of student expectations.
