Rapid solidification of Ti-7.3wt.%Cu (near-eutectoid composition), Ti-36.2wt.%Ni and Ti-34.3wt.% Ni-5.8wt.%Si alloys has been carried out by electron beam melting and splat quenching on a water-cooled rotating copper disc. The product obtained was in the form of thin ribbons 60–100 μm thick. Transmission electron microscopy studies of Ti---Cu alloy splats showed that the microstructure consisted of a mixture of martensite and a lamellar eutectoid product. The formation of the intermetallic compound Ti2Cu involved a diffusionless ω transformation and spinodal clustering. In the case of Ti---Ni alloy the as-quenched microstructure is complex, consisting of α, transformed β and intermetallic phases. This could have arisen possibly as a result of local variation in cooling rates. Rapid solidification of Ti---Ni---Si alloy resulted in partial quenching of an amorphous phase. The amorphous phase was seen to be extremely hard (a Vickers hardness of about 800 HV).

Tensile experiments on a fine-grained single-phase Mg–Zn–Al alloy (AZ31) at 673 K revealed superplastic behavior with an elongation to failure of 475% at 1 × 10−4 s−1 and non-superplastic behavior with an elongation to failure of 160% at 1 × 10−2 s−1; the corresponding strain rate sensitivities under these conditions were 0.5 and 0.2, respectively. Measurements indicated that the grain boundary sliding (GBS) contribution to strain ξ was 30% under non-superplastic conditions; there was also a significant sharpening in texture during such deformation. Under superplastic conditions, ξ was 50% at both low and high elongations of 20% and 120%; the initial texture became more random under such conditions. In non-superplastic conditions, deformation occurred under steady-state conditions without grain growth before significant flow localization whereas, under superplastic conditions, there was grain growth during the early stages of deformation, leading to strain hardening. The grains retained equiaxed shapes under all experimental conditions. Superplastic deformation is attributed to GBS, while non-superplastic deformation is attributed to intragranular dislocation creep with some contribution from GBS. The retention of equiaxed grain shapes during dislocation creep is consistent with a model based on local recovery related to the disturbance of triple junctions.

The marketing of organically labeled prawns is predominately in a cooked or raw frozen form to avoid the development of melanosis (black spot). Certification for organic status prohibits the use of any added chemicals. The application of 60% CO2/40%N2 modified atmosphere to chilled (raw) prawns using two species of prawn was investigated for the ability to control black spot formation. Sensory assessment and microbiological counts were used to determine the end of product shelf life. Modified atmosphere packaged (MAP) prawns exhibited no melanosis for up to 16 days. The high quality life was retained for 12 days; shelf life of 16 days, according to standard microbiological criteria, was achieved, which is more than twice previously reported for non-MAP prawns. Results suggest MAP may be an effective method for the marketing of organically grown prawns as well as those produced by conventional prawn aquaculture without application of the normal chemicals used to prevent black spot. Summary We have determined the full-length 14,491-nucleotide genome sequence of a new plant rhabdovirus, alfalfa dwarf virus (ADV). Seven open reading frames (ORFs) were identified in the antigenomic orientation of the negative-sense, single-stranded viral RNA, in the order 3′-N-P-P3-M-G-P6-L-5′. The ORFs are separated by conserved intergenic regions and the genome coding region is flanked by complementary 3′ leader and 5′ trailer sequences. Phylogenetic analysis of the nucleoprotein amino acid sequence indicated that this alfalfa-infecting rhabdovirus is related to viruses in the genus Cytorhabdovirus. When transiently expressed as GFP fusions in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves, most ADV proteins accumulated in the cell periphery, but unexpectedly P protein was localized exclusively in the nucleus. ADV P protein was shown to have a homotypic, and heterotypic nuclear interactions with N, P3 and M proteins by bimolecular fluorescence complementation. ADV appears unique in that it combines properties of both cytoplasmic and nuclear plant rhabdoviruses.
