This work presents a novel corrosion monitoring probe designed for simulating the conditions developed under disbonded coatings and for measuring current densities and their distribution over a simulated pipeline surface. The probe’s concept was experimentally evaluated via immersion tests under Cathodic Protection (CP) in high resistivity aqueous solution. Under the disbonded area, anodic currents as well as cathodic currents were both measured. Anodic current densities were used to calculate metal losses by means of Faraday’s law. Calculated corrosion patterns were compared with corrosion damage observed at the probe’s surface after a period of test. The probe’s working principles are explained in terms of simple electrochemistry.

Salt and solvent permeations across ion-exchange membranes used in electro-dialysis are directly related to the membrane material structure and chemistry. Although primarily used for aqueous effluents desalination, electro-dialysis was recently shown to be a promising technology for industrial wastewater and co-solvent mixtures purification. The harsh working conditions imposed by these liquid effluents, including high suspended solids, require the development of more chemically and mechanically resistant membranes. In this study, commercial porous stainless steel media filters (240 μm thick) were used as a backbone to prepare hybrid ion-exchange membranes by casting ion-exchange materials within the porous metal structure. The surface of the metal reinforcements was modified by plasma treatment prior to sol-gel silane grafting to improve the interface between the metal and the ion-exchange resins. The morphology of novel hybrid materials and the interface between the metal fibers and the ion-exchange material have been characterized using techniques such as scanning electron microscopy and FTIR mapping. The thickness of the silane coating was found to lie between 1 and 2 μm while water contact angle tests performed on membrane surfaces and corrosion test behaviors revealed the formation of a thin passivating oxide layer on the material surfaces providing anchoring for the silane grafting and adequate surface energy for the proper incorporation of the ion-exchange material. The hybrid membranes desalination performance were then tested in a bench top electro-dialysis cell over a range of flow rate, current densities and salt concentration conditions to evaluate the ability of the novel hybrid materials to desalinate model streams. The performance of the hybrid membranes were benchmarked and critically compared against commercially available membranes (Selemion™). Although the salt transfer kinetics across the hybrid ion-exchange composite membranes were shown to be comparable to that of the commercial membranes, the low porosity of the stainless steel reinforcements, around 60%, was shown to impede absolute salt permeations. The hybrid ion-exchange membranes were however found to be competitive at low current density and low flow velocity desalination conditions.

All rights reserved. A graphene nanodots-encaged porous gold electrode via ion beam sputtering deposition (IBSD) for electrochemical sensing is presented. The electrodes were fabricated using Au target, and a composite target of Al and graphene, which were simultaneously sputtered onto glass substrates by Ar ion beam, followed with hydrochloric acid corrosion. The as-prepared graphene nanodots-encaged porous gold electrodes were then used for the analysis of heavy metal ions, e.g. Cu2+ and Pb2+ by Osteryoung square wave voltammetry (OSWV). These porous electrodes exhibited enhanced detection range for the heavy metal ions due to the entrapped graphene nanodots in 3-D porous structure. In addition, it was also found that when the thickness of porous electrode reached 40 nm the detection sensitivity came into saturation. The linear detection range is 0.009-4 μM for Cu2+ and 0.006-2.5 μM for Pb2+. Good reusability and repeatability were also observed. The formation mechanism and 3-D structure of the porous electrode were also investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). This graphene entrapped 3-D porous structure may envision promising applications in sensing devices.

In this paper, a new amino acid derivative, namely Adenine-L-Alanine ramification (ALAR) was synthesized and investigated as a green corrosion inhibitor for X80 pipeline steel in 0.1 mol/L hydrochloric acid solution using the weight loss, AC impedance, and polarization curve method. The structure of the derivative was characterized by IR and UV–vis spectrum. The weight loss and AC impedance found that the inhibition efficiency increased with the increase in concentration of the inhibitor but decreased with rise in temperature, the corrosion inhibition efficiency attains 91.26% in 8 × 10−2 g/L concentration at 30 °C. The polarization studies showed that the studied amino acid derivative can be used as a corrosion inhibitor. The surface of inhibited and uninhibited specimens was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and the adsorption of the inhibitor on the mild steel surface obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The quantum chemical descriptors such as the energy of highest occupied molecular orbital, energy of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital were calculated and the inhibition mechanism can be analyzed by the distribution of electrons. Analysis indicated that the inhibitor molecular and empty d orbital of metal forms the coordination bond, covers on the surface of metal, and prevents corrosion reaction.

This paper presents new experimental evidences on the capability of a novel electrochemical corrosion monitoring sensor, which was recently conceived, for measuring localized corrosion under disbonded pipeline coatings. The sensor's design includes an artificial crevice for simulating the conditions developed under disbonded coatings and an electrode array for measuring current density distribution over its surface. The sensor capabilities were further evaluated by studying the dependency of corrosion patterns and current density distribution on the Cathodic Protection (CP) potential applied upon immersion in an aqueous environment. At the less negative CP potential, a good correlation was found between the inhomogeneous corrosion distribution under the disbonded coating as measured by the sensor and actual metal loss and corrosion attack observed on its surface at the end of the test. At more negative CP potentials no corrosion was detected or observed on the sensor's surface. In addition, characteristic changes in the cathodic current distribution at different CP potentials illustrated the possibility of employing the sensor to obtain valuable feedback on the performance of a given CP setup, without requiring its interruption or compensation of IR-drops. Furthermore, the sensor's capability to detect some of the effects of overprotection were shown at the most negative CP potential applied.

An approach to achieving the ambitious goal of cost effectively extending the safe operation life of energy pipelines to, for instance, 100 years is the application of structural health monitoring and life prediction tools that are able to provide long-term remnant pipeline life prediction and in-situ pipeline condition monitoring. A critical step in pipeline structural health monitoring is the enhancement of technological capabilities that are required for quantifying the effects of key factors influencing buried pipeline corrosion and environmentally assisted materials degradation, and the development of condition monitoring technologies that are able to provide in-situ monitoring and site-specific warning of pipeline damage. This paper provides an overview of our current research aimed at developing new sensors for monitoring, categorising and quantifying the level and nature of external pipeline and coating damages under the combined effects of various inter-related variables and processes such as localised corrosion, coating damage and disbondment, cathodic shielding. The concept of in-situ monitoring and site-specific warning of pipeline corrosion is illustrated by a case of monitoring localised corrosion under disbonded coatings using a new corrosion monitoring probe. A basic principle that underpins the use of sensors to monitor localised corrosion has been presented: Localised corrosion and coating failure are not an accidental occurrence, it occurs as the result of fundamental thermodynamic instability of a metal exposed to a specific environment. Therefore corrosion and coating disbondment occurring on a pipeline will also occur on a sensor made of the same material and exposed to the same pipeline condition. Although the exact location of localised corrosion or coating disbondment could be difficult to pinpoint along the length of a buried pipeline, the ‘worst-case scenario’ and high risk pipeline sections and sites are predictable. Sensors can be embedded at these strategic sites to collect data that contain ‘predictor features’ signifying the occurrence of localised corrosion, CP failure, coating disbondment and degradation. Information from these sensors will enable pipeline owners to prioritise site survey and inspection operations, and to develop maintenance strategy to manage aged pipelines, rather than replace them.

Continuous fiber/metal laminates (FML) offer significant improvements over current available materials for aircraft structures due to their excellent fatigue endurance and low density. Glass fibers/epoxy laminae and aluminum foil (Glare) are commonly used to obtain these hybrid composites. The environmental factors can limit the applications of composites by deteriorating the mechanical properties during service. Usually, epoxy resins absorb moisture when exposed to humid environments and metals are prone to surface corrosion. Therefore, the combination of the two materials in Glare (polymeric composite and metal). can lead to differences that often turn out to be beneficial in terms of mechanical properties and resistance to environmental influences. In this work. The viscoelastic properties. such as storage modulus (E') and loss modulus (E'), were obtained for glass fiber/epoxy composite, aluminum 2024-T3 alloy and for a glass fiber/epoxy/aluminum laminate (Glare). It was found that the glass fiber/epoxy (G/E) composites decrease the E' modulus during hygrothermal conditioning up to saturation point (6 weeks). However, for Glare laminates the E' modulus remains unchanged (49GPa) during the cycle of hygrothermal conditioning. The outer aluminum sheets in the Glare laminate shield the G/E composite laminae from moisture absorption. which in turn prevent, in a certain extent, the material from hygrothermal degradation effects. It is known that chromium electroplating is related to the reduction in the fatigue strength of base metal. However, chromium results in protection against wear and corrosion combined with chemical resistance and good lubricity. Environmental requirements are an important point to be considered in the search for possible alternatives to hard chrome plating. Aircraft landing gear manufactures are considering WC thermal spray coating applied by the high-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) process an alternative candidate, which shows performance at least comparable to results, obtained for hard chrome plating. The aim of this study is to compare the influence of WC-17Co and WC-10Co-4Cr coatings applied by HVOF process and hard chromium electroplating on the fatigue strength of AISI 4340 steel, with and without shot peening. S-N curves were obtained in axial fatigue test for base material, chromium plated and tungsten carbide coated specimens. Tungsten carbide thermal spray coating results in higher fatigue strength when compared to hard chromium electroplated. Shot peening prior to thermal spraying showed to be an excellent alternative to increase fatigue strength of AISI 4340 steel. Experimental data showed higher axial fatigue and corrosion resistance in salt fog exposure for samples WC-10Co-4Cr HVOF coated when compared with WC-17Co. Fracture surface analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated the existence of a uniform coverage of nearly all substrates. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Potentiostatic and potentiodynamic studies were carried out to establish the inhibiting effects of citric acid on the pitting corrosion of tin. The critical potential (E-crit), which leads to pitting or general corrosion, was determined in sodium perchlorate solution in the pH range 1.0 to 4.0. Pit nucleation and growth, at pH 4.0, can be described by instantaneous nucleation followed by progressive nucleation. The results show that the minimum acid concentration needed to inhibit pitting of tin is 10(-2) M. Pitting occurrence by direct interaction between metal and perchlorate anions was observed.

Despite the fact that chromium electrodeposition results in protection against wear and corrosion, combined with chemical resistance and good lubricity, the reduction in fatigue strength of base metal and environmental requirements causes one to search for possible alternatives. To improve the fatigue and corrosion resistance of AISI 4340 steel, an experimental study has been made for an intermediate electroless nickel layer deposited on base metal. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of nickel underplate on the fatigue and corrosion strength of hard-chromium-plated AISI 4340 steel. Deposition of the conventional wear-resistant hard chromium plating leads to a decrease in mechanical properties of the base metal, especially the fatigue strength. Rotating bending fatigue tests results indicate better performance for conventional hard chromium plating. Good corrosion resistance in salt fog exposure was obtained for the accelerated hard chromium plating. Experimental data showed higher fatigue and corrosion resistance for samples prepared with accelerated hard chromium plate over electroless nickel plate, when compared with samples without electroless nickel underplate.

The laser Welding process was introduced into dentistry by the end of the 1980s, resulting on a great impulse to that area with the development of cheaper and smaller equipment, using simpler technique. This allowed greater use of that process on the confection of prostheses compared to the brazing process since the heat source for that process is a concentrated light beam of high power, which minimizes distortion problems on the prosthetic pieces. Ag-Pd-Au-Cu alloy used on the confection of dental implant prostheses was observed before and after subjection to the laser welding process. The microstructure was analyzed with the. use of optic microscopy and the corrosion resistance was studied by the traditional electrochemical techniques and by electrochemical impedance, under environmental conditions simulating the aggressiveness found in the mouth cavity. A structural change was detected on the weld area, which presented a refined microstructure deriving from the high-speed cooling. The base metal out of the weld area presented a fusion coarse microstructure. The electrochemical essays showed differences on the potentiodynamic polarization behavior in both weld and metal base areas, indicating superior corrosion resistance in the weld area. The impedance spectra were characterized by capacitive distorted components, presenting linear impedance in the low frequencies area. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Corrosion phenomena in a dental copper-based alloy are experimentally studied using electrochemical techniques. Two heating sources, torch and induction, were used in the casting experiments. In the corrosion essays, the optimum casting cycle and the polarization curves were obtained. It was found that the heating sources have little influence on the corrosion processes of the metallic alloys studied.

This paper investigates corrosion behavior in graphite refractory hot metal impregnated with ZrO 2 and CeO 2 carrying solutions used in Blast Furnace hearth, consisting of 50% graphite and 50% anthracite. Corrosions tests were carried out by means of finger test method in an induction furnace, using bar-shaped 30×30×280 mm test specimens and hot metal from CSN#2 Blast Furnace runner. The temperature chosen for this test was 1520°C and sixty-minute isotherm. Upon test completion, test specimens were characterized by their dimensional variation, X-ray diffractometry and Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM).
