Pure and lanthanum-doped Bi4Ti3O12 thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate using a polymeric precursor solution. The spin-coated films were specular and crack-free and crystalline after annealing at 700 degreesC for 2 h. Crystallinity and morphological evaluation were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Multilayered films obtained using the intermediate-crystalline layer route present a dense microstructure with spherical grains. Films obtained using the intermediate-amorphous layer, present elongated grains around 250 nm in size. The dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the lanthanum-doped Bi4Ti3O12 films are strongly affected by the crystallization route. The hysteresis loops are fully saturated with a remnant polarization and drive voltage of the films, heat-treated by the intermediate-crystalline (P-r = 20.2 muC/cm(2) and V = 1.35 V) and for the film heat-treated by amorphous route (P-r = 22.4 muC/cm(2) and V = 2.99 V). This paper aims to describe the synthesis of the semi-crystalline and crystalline powder of lanthanum doped with zirconium titanate (65/35), LZT through Pechini method. The analysis done by Raman demonstrated that semi-crystalline phase at 550 degrees C and crystalline phase after 600 degrees C were formed. The XRD pattern shows the ZrTiO4 phase formation demonstrating that La substitutions into the lattice take place. The calcined powder at different temperatures shows a semi-crystalline phase presenting photoluminescence effect when processed at low temperatures. From 300 to 400 degrees C a broadband is observed at 563 nm and 568 nm, respectively. Defects creation such as: Zr3+ center dot Vo(center dot center dot) and Ti3+ - V-O(center dot center dot), Zr and Ti replaced by La with vacancy formation, impurities and imperfections contributed to the photoluminescence effect. However, the main emission is due to a reverse Ti4+ -> O2- or/and Zr4+ -> O2- transition that occur within a regular titanate or zirconate eight-fold coordination [BO8-delta], B = Zr4+, Ti4+. Lanthanum doped bismuth titanate thin films (Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12-BLT) were produced by the polymeric precursor method and crystallized in a domestic microwave oven and in conventional furnace. Using platinum coated silicon substrates configuration, ferroelectric properties of the films were determined with remanent polarization P-r and a coercive field E-c of 3.9 mu C/cm(2) and 70 kV/cm for the film annealed in the microwave oven and 20 mu C/cm(2) and 52 kV/cm for the film annealed in conventional furnace, respectively. The films annealed in conventional furnace exhibited excellent retention-free characteristics at low infant periods indicating that BLT thin films can be a promise material for use in nonvolatile memories. on the other hand, the pinning of domains wall causes a strong decay at low infant periods for the films annealed in the microwave furnace which makes undesireable the application for future FeRAMS memories. a-b axis-oriented, lanthanum doped Bi4Ti3O12 (BLT) thin films with a TiO2 rutile buffer layer deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates were grown by the soft chemical method. Butterfly dielectric behavior has been achieved and can be ascribed to the ferroelectric domain switching. The remanent polarization and the coercive voltage for the film deposited on TiO2 buffer layer were 22.2 mu C/cm(2) and 1.8 V, respectively. Random-oriented BLT films showed a reduction in switching polarization when compared to the a-b axis-oriented films. Due to the excellent physical properties, these films are a promising candidate for use in lead-free applications in ferroelectric devices. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Nucleation and growth of mullite whiskers in the La2O3-Al2O3-SiO2 system were investigated in the 1500degrees-1700degreesC temperature range. A differential thermal analysis (DTA) showed that the mullitization temperature decreases from 1350degreesC to 1240degreesC as a result of lanthania doping. In the temperature range of 1250-1500degreesC, most of the mullite grains have an Al2O3/SiO2 = 1.5 composition throughout the ceramic body; however, from 1400degreesC upward, the number of anisotropic grains with the Al2O3/SiO2 = 1.3 composition begins to increase. The concentration of alumina in the composition of the grain-boundary phase decreases as firing temperatures increase. At temperatures > 1500degreesC, alumina grains and whiskers grow on the internal and external surfaces of the ceramic body with the characteristic Al2O3/SiO2 = 1.3 composition. Removal of the mullite whisker layer by acid attack revealed an alumina-rich, rosace-like patterned microstructure correlated with the process of whisker nucleation and growth. In the early stages, whisker growth rates were found to be near 60 mum/h. Experimental evidence pointed to nucleation inside the thin glass layer on the external surface.

Results of crystal structure refinements and phase quantification for samples of Co-doped lanthanum chromites with nominal composition LaCr(1-x)Co(x)O(3), for x=0.00, 0.10, 0.20, and 0.30, prepared by combustion synthesis are presented. The resulting powders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD patterns were obtained with Cu K alpha radiation for non-doped lanthanum chromite sample and additionally with Cr K alpha radiation for Co-doped lanthanum chromites samples, in order to enhance the signal from scattering. Rietveld analysis of XRD data showed that the studied samples presented the lanthanum chromite with an orthorhombic structure (Pnma), except for the composition with x=0.30, in which the space group was found to be R (3) over barc. Orthorhombic modification of europium doped lanthanum trimetaphosphate has been prepared. The compound was obtained by precipitation of rare earth chloride solution with trimetaphosphoric acid. The characterizations were made using X-ray diffractometry, chemical analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Excitation and emission spectra were recorded at liquid nitrogen and room temperatures. Assignments of the 5D0→7FJ (J=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) transitions were made and an unusual high 5D0→7F4 transition intensity with six split lines has been observed. Structural distortion of the crystal lattice may be caused by the Eu3+ ion inclusion. The simple overlap model was applied for the calculation of the total splitting of the 5D0→7F1 transition, the 5D0→7F0/5D 0→7F2 transition intensity ratio and the Ωλ (λ=2.4) intensity parameters. Theoretical predictions showed to be in good accordance with the experimental data. © 1988 Elsevier Science S.A.

Lanthanum-modified bismuth titanate, Bi4 - xLaxTi3O12 (BLT) ceramics, with x ranging from 0 to 0.75 were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Orthorhombicity of the system is decreased with the increase of lanthanum content in the bismuth titanate (BIT) crystal lattice. No secondary phases were evident after lanthanum addition. Increasing lanthanum content causes a structural distortion in the bismuth titanate lattice. The shape of the grains is strongly influenced by the lanthanum added to the system. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. This paper focuses on the magnetoelectric coupling (ME) at room temperature in lanthanum modified bismuth ferrite thin film (BLFO) deposited on SrRuO 3-buffered Pt/TiO 2/SiO 2/Si(100) substrates by the soft chemical method. BLFO film was coherently grown at a temperature of 500 °C. The magnetoelectric coefficient measurement was performed to evidence magnetoelectric coupling behavior. Room temperature magnetic coercive field indicates that the film is magnetically soft. The maximum magnetoelectric coefficient in the longitudinal direction was close to 12 V/cmOe. Dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss demonstrated only slight dispersion with frequency due the less two-dimensional stress in the plane of the film. Polarization reversal was investigated by applying dc voltage through a conductive tip during the area scanning. We observed that various types of domain behavior such as 71 ° and 180° domain switching, and pinned domain formation occurred. Copyright © 2009 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.

We have fabricated a neodymium-doped phosphate glass fiber with a silica cladding and used it to form a fiber laser. Phosphate and silicate glasses have considerably different glass transition temperatures and softening points making it hard to draw a fiber from these two glasses. A bulk phosphate glass of composition (Nd2O3)(0.011)(La2O3)(0.259)(P2O5)(0.725)(Al2O3)(0.005) was prepared and the resultant material was transparent, free from bubbles and visibly homogeneous. The bulk phosphate glass was drawn to a fiber while being jacketed with silica and the resultant structure was of good optical quality, free from air bubbles and major defects. The attenuation at a wavelength of 1.06 mu m was 0.05 dB/cm and the refractive index of the core and cladding at the pump wavelength of 488 nm was 1.56 and 1.46, respectively. The fibers were mechanically strong enough to allow for ease of handling and could be spliced to conventional silica fiber. The fibers were used to demonstrate lasing at the F-4(3/2) - I-4(11/2) (1.06 mu m) transition. Our work demonstrates the potential to form silica clad optical fibers with phosphate cores doped with very high levels of rare-earth ions (27-mol % rare-earth oxide).
