We introduce a general Hamiltonian describing coherent superpositions of Cooper pairs and condensed molecular bosons. For particular choices of the coupling parameters, the model is integrable. One integrable manifold, as well as the Bethe ansatz solution, was found by Dukelsky et al. [J. Dukelsky, G.G. Dussel, C. Esebbag, S. Pittel, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 050403]. Here we show that there is a second integrable manifold, established using the boundary quantum inverse scattering method. In this manner we obtain the exact solution by means of the algebraic Bethe ansatz. In the case where the Cooper pair energies are degenerate we examine the relationship between the spectrum of these integrable Hamiltonians and the quasi-exactly solvable spectrum of particular Schrodinger operators. For the solution we derive here the potential of the Schrodinger operator is given in terms of hyperbolic functions. For the solution derived by Dukelsky et al., loc. cit. the potential is sextic and the wavefunctions obey PT-symmetric boundary conditions. This latter case provides a novel example of an integrable Hermitian Hamiltonian acting on a Fock space whose states map into a Hilbert space of PE-symmetric wavefunctions defined on a contour in the complex plane. We propose a novel finite element formulation that significantly reduces the number of degrees of freedom necessary to obtain reasonably accurate approximations of the low-frequency component of the deformation in boundary-value problems. In contrast to the standard Ritz–Galerkin approach, the shape functions are defined on a Lie algebra—the logarithmic space—of the deformation function. We construct a deformation function based on an interpolation of transformations at the nodes of the finite element. In the case of the geometrically exact planar Bernoulli beam element presented in this work, these transformation functions at the nodes are given as rotations. However, due to an intrinsic coupling between rotational and translational components of the deformation function, the formulation provides for a good approximation of the deflection of the beam, as well as of the resultant forces and moments. As both the translational and the rotational components of the deformation function are defined on the logarithmic space, we propose to refer to the novel approach as the “Logarithmic finite element method”, or “LogFE” method.

The extension of Hehl's Poincaré gauge theory to more general groups that include space-time diffeomorphisms is worked out for two particular examples, one corresponding to the action of the conformal group on Minkowski space, and the other to the action of the de Sitter group on de Sitter space, and the effect of these groups on physical fields.

Any (N+M)-parameter Lie group G with an N-parameter subgroup H can be realized as a global group of diffeomorphisms on an M-dimensional base space B, with representations in terms of transformation laws of fields on B belonging to linear representations of H. The gauged generalization of the global diffeomorphisms consists of general diffeomorphisms (or coordinate transformations) on a base space together with a local action of H on the fields. The particular applications of the scheme to space-time symmetries is discussed in terms of Lagrangians, field equations, currents, and source identities. A modified density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm is applied to the zigzag spin-1/2 chain with frustrated antiferromagnetic exchange J(1) and J(2) between first and second neighbors. The modified algorithm yields accurate results up to J(2)/J(1) approximate to 4 for the magnetic gap Delta to the lowest triplet state, the amplitude B of the bond order wave phase, the wavelength lambda of the spiral phase, and the spin correlation length xi. The J(2)/J(1) dependences of Delta, B, lambda, and xi provide multiple comparisons to field theories of the zigzag chain. The twist angle of the spiral phase and the spin structure factor yield additional comparisons between DMRG and field theory. Attention is given to the numerical accuracy required to obtain exponentially small gaps or exponentially long correlations near a quantum phase transition.

A new fiber bundle approach to the gauge theory of a group G that involves space‐time symmetries as well as internal symmetries is presented. The ungauged group G is regarded as the group of left translations on a fiber bundle G(G/H,H), where H is a closed subgroup and G/H is space‐time. The Yang–Mills potential is the pullback of the Maurer–Cartan form and the Yang–Mills fields are zero. More general diffeomorphisms on the bundle space are then identified as the appropriate gauged generalizations of the left translations, and the Yang–Mills potential is identified as the pullback of the dual of a certain kind of vielbein on the group manifold. The Yang–Mills fields include a torsion on space‐time.

Abstract | In this article the shuffling of cards is studied by using the concept of a group action. We use some fundamental results in Elementary Number Theory to obtain formulas for the orders of some special shufflings, namely the Faro and Monge shufflings and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Monge shuffling to be a cycle. In the final section we extend the considerations to the shuffling of multisets.

Be the strong coupling constant alpha(s) from the tau hadronn width using a renormalization group summed (RGS) expansion of the QCD Adler lunction. The main theoretical uncertainty in the extraction of as is due to the manner in which renormalization group invariance is implemented, and the as yet uncalculated higher order terms in the QCD perturbative series. We show that new expansion exhibits good renormalization group improvement and the behavior of the series is similar to that of the standard RGS expansion. The value of the strong coupling in (MS) over bar scheme obtained with the RCS expansion is alpha(s) (M-tau(2)) = 0.338 +/- 0.010. The convergence properties of the new expansion can be improved by Bond transformation and analytic continuation in t he Bond plane. This is discussed elsewhere in these issues.
