Real source-sink pair

This work is concerned with the interaction of a source-sink pair. The main parameters of the problem are source and sink flow rates, the axial and lateral separations of the source and sink, and the angle between the axes of source and sink. Of concern is the percentage of source fluid that enters the sink as a function of these parameters. The experiments have been carried using the source nozzle diameter of 6 mm and the sink pipe diameter of two sizes: 10 mm and 20 mm. The Reynolds numbers of the source jet is about 3200. The main diagnostics are flow visualization using dye, laser induced fluorescence (LIF), particle streak photographs and particle image velocimetry (Ply). To obtain the removal effectiveness (that is percentage of source fluid that is going through the sink pipe), titration method is used. The sink diameter and the angle between source and the sink axes do not influence efficiencies as do the sink flow rate and the lateral separation. Data from experiments have been consolidated so that these results can be used for designing sinks for removal of heat and pollutants. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Going beyond Red with a Tri- and Tetracoordinate Boron Conjugate: Intriguing Near-IR Optical Properties and Applications in Anion Sensing

The design and synthesis of a new tri- and tetracoordinate boron conjugate is reported. The conjugate shows broad near-IR emission (similar to 625-850 nm) and is found to be a selective colorimetric and ratiometric sensor for fluoride ions.

The annular crack in a nonhomogeneous matrix surrounding a fiber under torsional loading .2. The crack going through the bimaterial interface into the fiber

The axisymmetric problem of an elastic fiber perfectly bonded to a nonhomogeneous elastic matrix which contains an annular crack going through the interface into the fiber under axially symmetric shear stress is considered. The nature of the stress singularity is studied. It is shown that at the irregular point on the interface, whether the shear modulus is continuous or discontinuous the stresses are bounded. The problem is formulated in terms of a singular integral equation and can be solved by a regular method. The stress intensity factors and crack surface displacement are given.

Paciano II: the report of a conversation on whaling and science, 1-3 March 2008 (Paciano, Umbria)

In 2006 the UK-based charity, Global Ocean, with local support from the Third Millennium Foundation, convened a Conversation among specialists about the problems facing the conservation of whales. Called "A consultation on whaling", this gathering was held in the ancient village of Paciano, in Umbria near the border with Tuscany, 15 – 17 October 2006. There were 15 participants from 11 countries. Dr Kees Lankester served as moderator. The outcome was an Aide Memoire which served to guide the participants in the run-up to the 2007 meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), held in Anchorage, Alaska, in June. One point of agreement was that a second consultation should be held in the months following the Anchorage meeting, involving some but not necessarily all of the participants in the first, but concentrating this time on scientific issues – especially those encountered in the Scientific Committee of the IWC –with particular attention to informing a wider public about those scientific activities in relation to the problems confronting the IWC and the views of scientists about them. This document is the report of that Conversation, referred to as Paciano II. The moderator was Dr Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara and the Report was written by Kieran Mulvaney in consultation with all participants, and with reference to an Aide Memoire prepared by the Rapporteur, Dr Russell Leaper. The sponsor and organisers have agreed with the general sentiment expressed by participants in Paciano II that further such conversations should be held at roughly yearly intervals and they will try to satisfy that desire. Although these future gatherings would be concerned with the living ocean they would not necessarily be restricted in future to consideration of whales and whaling. Discussions are on-going for selection of a theme which is of both scientific interest and practical concern for conservation of marine life and management of the uses of ocean space. The status of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), in southern Scotland: a cause for concern

The objective of this article is to review the populations of Arctic charr in the south of Scotland which have become locally extinct, and the reasons for their demise. In the British Isles, the Arctic charr in individual lakes have been isolated from each other for thousands of years and have developed a variety of phenotypic characteristics which are probably genetically based. About 200 populations of Arctic charr have been recorded from different parts of the British Isles: approximately 12 in England, 50 in Ireland, 175 in Scotland and four in Wales. The threats to charr from acidification, afforestation, engineering schemes, angling and fish farming are assessed, and the establishment of new populations is proposed as a method of replacing extinct stocks or providing an additional safeguard for valuable stocks in threatened waters.
