A novel technology for simultaneous and independent measurement of dual parameters is proposed and experimented. The length of a single fibre Bragg grating (FBG) is divided into two parts. The temperature variation and another measurand can be measured independently and simultaneously, and the thermal effect can be erased with great ease. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A frequency-modulated continuous-wave technique is used to detect the presence of frequency shifts in the Rayleigh-backscattered light in a single-mode optical fiber as a result of a changing temperature. The system is able to detect a rate of temperature change of 0.014 K/s, when a 20-cm length of fiber is heated. The system is also able to demonstrate a spatial resolution of better than 15 cm.

We report the first use of a multicore fibre incorporating fibre Bragg grating strain sensors in each core as a fibre optic pitch and roll sensor. A length of four-core fibre supported at one end forms a cantilever. The differential strains between opposite grating pairs depend on the fibre’s orientation in pitch (in the vertical plane) and roll (azimuth) with respect to gravity. Resolutions of ±2◦ in roll and ±15◦ in pitch were measured.

We design a Raman fibre laser with a short cavity providing narrow-band generation. The laser is based on a commercial single-mode fibre (980-HP) span of 12 m length. The laser generates up to 11 W of intracavity power. Even at high generation power, the laser spectrum is narrow (less than 200 pm) - several times narrower than for conventional Raman fibre lasers based on longer fibres. The intensity dynamics reveals indications of mode correlations. © 2014 Astro Ltd.

Unrepeatered 42.7 Gb/s per channel RZ-DPSK transmission over standard SMF-28 fibre with novel URFL based amplification using fibre Bragg gratings is investigated. OSNR and gain performance are studied experimentally and through simulations. Error free transmission for 16 channels across the full C-band with direct detection was experimentally demonstrated for 280 km span length, as well as 6-channel transmission at 340 km and single-channel transmission up to 360 km (75 dB) without employing ROPA or specialty fibres.©2013 Optical Society of America.

We report experimental measurements of the strain and temperature sensitivity of the optical phase in a singlemode polymer optical fibre. These values were obtained by measuring optical path length change using a Mach-Zender interferometer.

The existence of an optimal span length for 40 Gbit/s WDM transmission systems with hybrid Raman/EDFA amplification is demonstrated. Optimal lengths are obtained for specific amplifier configurations and different fibre arrangements based on SSMF/DCF and SLA/IDF implementation, using a simple nonlinearity management theory.

We demonstrate mode-locking and single-pulse generation in fibre laser with record-setting cavity length of 25 km. Substantial increase in the pulse round trip duration leads to ultra-low repetition rate of 8.097 kHz and pulse energy of 3.7 uJ.

A single-pulse actively mode-locked fibre laser with a cavity length exceeding 1 km has been developed and investigated for the first time. This all-fibre erbium-doped laser has a normal intracavity dispersion and generates dissipative 8-ns solitons with a fundamental repetition rate of 163.8 kHz; the energy per pulse reaches 34 nJ. The implemented mode locking, based on the use of intracavity intensity modulator, provides self-triggering and high stability of pulsed lasing. A possibility of continuous tuning of the centre lasing wavelength in the range of 1558 - 1560 nm without any tunable spectral selective elements in the cavity is demonstrated. The tuning occurs when controlling the modulation signal frequency due to the forced change in the pulse repetition time (group delay) under the conditions of intracavity chromatic dispersion. © 2013 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

We propose and demonstrate an optical liquid level sensor based on the surrounding medium refractive index (SRI) sensing using an excessively tilted fibre grating (ETFG). When the ETFG submerged in water, two sets of cladding modes are coupled, corresponding to air- and water-surrounded grating structures, respectively. The coupling strengths of the two sets of cladding modes evolve with the submerging length of the grating, providing a mechanism to measure the liquid level. Comparing with long-period fibre grating based liquid level sensor, the ETFG sensor has a much higher SRI responsivity for liquids with refractive index around 1.33 and a lower thermal cross sensitivity. © 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V. We present results on characterization of lasers with ultra-long cavity lengths up to 84km, the longest cavity ever reported. We have analyzed the mode structure, shape and width of the generated spectra, intensity fluctuations depending on length and intra-cavity power. The RF spectra exhibit an ultra-dense cavity mode structure (mode spacing is 1.2kHz for 84km), in which the width of the mode beating is proportional to the intra-cavity power while the optical spectra broaden with power according to the square-root law acquiring a specific shape with exponential wings. A model based on wave turbulence formalism has been developed to describe the observed effects.

We propose a new approach for secret key exchange involving the variation of the cavity length of an ultra-long fibre laser. The scheme is based on the realisation that the free spectral range of the laser cavity can be used as an information carrier. We present a proof-of-principle demonstration of this new concept using a 50-km-long fibre laser to link two users, both of whom can randomly add an extra 1-km-long fibre segment.
