A nonlinear polarization rotation based all-fiber passively mode-locked Tm3+-doped fiber laser is demonstrated by using a 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) as an in-line polarizer. Stable soliton pulses centered at 1992.7 nm with 2.02 nm FWHM bandwidth were produced at a repetition rate of 1.902 MHz with pulse duration of 2.2 ps and pulse energy of 74.6 pJ. With the increased pump power, the laser also can operate at noise-like regime with 18.1 nm FWHM bandwidth and pulse energy of up to 250.1 nJ. Using the same 45° TFG, both stable soliton and noise-like mode-locking centered at ∼1970 nm and ∼2050 nm, were also achieved by shortening and extending the length of Tm3+-doped fiber, respectively, exhibiting advantages of broadband and low insertion loss at 2 μm band.

An all-fiber normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser with 45- tilted fiber grating (TFG) isto the best of our knowledgeexperimentally demonstrated for the first time. Stable linearly-chirped pulses with the duration of 4 ps and the bandwidth of 9 nm can be directly generated from the laser cavity. By employing the 45 TFG with the polarization-dependent loss of 33 dBoutput pulses with high polarization extinction ratio of 26 dB are implemented in the experiment. Our result shows that the 45 TFG can work effectively as a polarizerwhich could be exploited to singlepolarization all-fiber lasers.

In this paper, we report a systematic investigation of the dependence of both temperature and strain sensitivities on the jiber Bragg grating (FBG) type, including the wellknown Type I, Type IIA, and a new type which we have designated Type 1.4, using both hydrogen-Ji-ee and hydrogenated B/Ge codoped jibers. We have identijed distinct sensitivity characteristics for each grating type, and we have utilised them to implement a novel dual-grating, duul-parameter sensor device. Three dual-grating sensing schemes with different combinations of gruting types have been constructed and compared. The Type IA-Type IIA combination exhibits the best pe$ormance and is superior to that of previously reported gruting-based structures. The characteristics of the measurement errors in such dualgrating sensor systems is also presented in detail.

A novel wavelength-division-multiplexed in-fibre Bragg grating sensor system combined with high resolution drift-compensated interferometric wavelength-shift detection is described. This crosstalk-free system is based on the use of an interferometric wavelength scanner and a low resolution spectrometer. A four element system is demonstrated for temperature measurement, and a resolution of ±0.1°C has been achieved.

We describe how an acousto-optic tunable filter can be used to both demultiplex the signals from multiple fibre Bragg grating sensors and simultaneously provide wide bandwidth signal demodulation in a system using interferometric wavelength shift detection. In an experimental demonstration, the approach provided a noise limited strain resolution of 24.9 nε Hz -1/2 at 15 Hz. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

We report a characterization of the acoustic sensitivity of microstructured polymer optical fiber interferometric sensors at ultrasonic frequencies from 100kHz to 10MHz. The use of wide-band ultrasonic fiber optic sensors in biomedical ultrasonic and optoacoustic applications is an open alternative to conventional piezoelectric transducers. These kind of sensors, made of biocompatible polymers, are good candidates for the sensing element in an optoacoustic endoscope because of its high sensitivity, its shape and its non-brittle and non-electric nature. The acoustic sensitivity of the intrinsic fiber optic interferometric sensors depends strongly of the material which is composed of. In this work we compare experimentally the intrinsic ultrasonic sensitivities of a PMMA mPOF with other three optical fibers: a singlemode silica optical fiber, a single-mode polymer optical fiber and a multimode graded-index perfluorinated polymer optical fiber. © 2014 SPIE.

The authors fabricated a demountable Ferrule connector/Physical contact connection between silica fiber and a polymer optical fiber (POF) containing a fiber Bragg grating. The use of a connector for POF grating sensors eliminates the limitations of ultraviolet glued connections and increases the ease with which the devices can be applied to real-world measurement tasks. © 2012 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

We investigate the use of an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) to interrogate both fibre Bragg grating (FBG) and interferometric sensors. A broadband light source is used to illuminate both the FBG and interferometric sensors. Reflected spectral information is directed to an AWG with integral photodetectors providing 40 electrical outputs. To interrogate interferometric sensors we investigated the dual wavelength technique to measure the distance of a Fabry-Perot cavity, which produced a maximum unambiguous range of 1440μm with an active sensor. Three methods are described to interrogate FBG sensors. The first technique makes use of the reflected light intensity in an AWG channel passband from a narrow bandwidth grating, giving a usable range of 500με and a dynamic strain resolution of 96nε/√Hz at 30Hz. The second approach utilises wide gratings larger than the channel spacing of the AWG; by monitoring the intensity present in corresponding AWG channels an improved range of 1890με was achieved. The third method improves the dynamic range by utilising a heterodyne approach based on interferometric wavelength shift detection providing a dynamic strain resolution of 17nε/√Hz at 30Hz.

Optical pump controlled, remotely tunable phase-shifted fiber grating transmission filters were analyzed. The transmission peak had a full width hail maximum (FWHM) bandwidth. With increasing control pump power, the resonant peak shifted towards the longer wavelength side. The efficiency of the system was largely affected by the greater number of sections of doped fiber as well as the absence of recirculation of unabsorbed pump beam. The configuration, besides its simplicity and cost-effectiveness, exhibited wavelength-independent pump-induced phase shifts and no anisotropic effects during operation.

We have developed the analytic expressions for the phase response and time delay of FBGSL of arbitrary grating structure and found that the results from the modelling are in excellent agreement with that of the experimentally measured real devices. The theoretical and experimental investigation clearly reveals that FBGSLs utilizing uniform and linearly chirped gratings exhibit a near-constant time delay in the passbands. Such multi-channel bandpass filters should be highly attractive to WDM applications as they are operating in transmission regime and offering near-zero dispersion.

A nonlinear polarization rotation based all-fiber passively modelocked Tm3+-doped fiber laser is demonstrated by using a 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) as an in-line polarizer. The 45° TFG centered at 2000 nm with polarization dependent loss (PDL) of >12 dB at 1850 nm∼2150 nm range was UV inscribed for the first time in SM28 fiber using a 244 nm Ar+ continuous wave laser and a phase mask with 25 mm long uniform pitch and titled period pattern of 33.7° with respect to the fiber axis. We proposed and demonstrated pulsed fiber lasers Q-switched and mode-locked by using a large-angle tilted fiber grating, for the first time to our best knowledge. Owing to the unique polarization properties of the large-angle tilted fiber grating (LA-TFG), i.e. polarization-dependent loss and polarization-mode splitting, switchable dual-wavelength Q-switched and mode-locked pulses have been achieved with short and long cavities, respectively. For the mode-locking case, the laser was under the operation of nanosecond rectangular pulses, due to the peak-power clamping effect. With the increasing pump power, the durations of both single-and dual-wavelength rectangular pulses increase. It was also found that each filtered wavelength of the dual-wavelength rectangular pulse corresponds to an individual nanosecond rectangular pulse by employing a tunable bandpass filter.
