A monoclonal antibody specific for the empty conformation of class II MHC molecules revealed the presence of abundant empty molecules on the surface of spleen- and bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (DC) among various types of antigen-presenting cells. The empty class II MHC molecules are developmentally regulated and expressed predominantly on immature DC. They can capture peptide antigens directly from the extracellular medium and present bound peptides to antigen-specific T lymphocytes. The ability of the empty cell-surface class II MHC proteins to bind peptides and present them to T cells without intracellular processing can serve to extend the spectrum of antigens able to be presented by DC, consistent with their role as sentinels in the immune system.

The three-dimensional structures of human parvovirus B19 VP2 capsids, alone and complexed with its cellular receptor, globoside, have been determined to 26 resolution. The B19 capsid structure, reconstructed from cryo-electron micrographs of vitrified specimens, has depressions on the icosahedral 2-fold and 3-fold axes, as well as a canyon-like region around the 5-fold axes. Similar results had previously been found in an 8 angstrom resolution map derived from x-ray diffraction data. Other parvoviral structures have a cylindrical channel along the 5-fold icosahedral axes, whereas density covers the 5-fold axes in B19. The glycolipid receptor molecules bind into the depressions on the 3-fold axes of the B19:globoside complex. A model of the tetrasaccharide component of globoside, organized as a trimeric fiber, fits well into the difference density representing the globoside receptor. Escape mutations to neutralizing antibodies map onto th capsid surface at regions immediately surrounding the globoside attachment sites. The proximity of the antigenic epitopes to the receptor site suggests that neutralization of virus infectivity is caused by preventing attachment of viruses to cells.

Invariant chain (Ii), a membrane glycoprotein, binds class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) glycoproteins, probably via its class II-associated Ii peptide (CLIP) segment, and escorts them toward antigen-containing endosomal compartments. We find that a soluble, trimeric ectodomain of Ii expressed and purified from Escherichia coli blocks peptide binding to soluble HLA-DR1. Proteolysis indicates that Ii contains two structural domains. The C-terminal two-thirds forms an alpha-helical domain that trimerizes and interacts with empty HLA-DR1 molecules, augmenting rather than blocking peptide binding. The N-terminal one-third, which inhibits peptide binding, is proteolytically susceptible over its entire length. In the trimer, the N-terminal domains act independently with each CLIP segment exposed and free to bind an MHC class II molecule, while the C-terminal domains act as a trimeric unit.

This poem is about winter and appears to be an assemblage of passages from several published works along with Tudor's own compositions. On the verso, Tudor wrote "Abbott 2nd. March 1796." On the empty envelope is written: "Letters from my dear deceased friend J.H.T.," along with a note in another hand reading: "no letters found enclosed." It is unclear whether or not the envelope formerly held the poem.

Greek banks are close to collapse, even if a new bail-out programme is agreed soon. The deterioration of the economy means that their fragile capital position is deteriorating further. In this CEPS Commentary, Daniel Gros observes that any new programme needs to include recapitalisation, comprising possibly a bail-in and restructuring to get the banking system working again. With only a small part of the assets unencumbered and a government with empty pockets, the depositors might have to take a large part of the burden. As private investors are unlikely to participate in a recapitalisation, foreign official funds will be needed. A direct equity investment by the EIB or the EBRD could be used to transfer control rights, and special ESM bonds could be used to provide additional capital without entailing additional risk to the creditors
