In this work, the electrochemical behavior of Cu-16(wt.%)Zn-6.5(wt.%)Al alloy containing the β'-phase (martensite) was studied in borate buffer solution (pH 8.4) by means of open-circuit potential (EOC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The alloy EOC was -0.29 V vs. Hg/HgO/OH-, similar to that of pure copper in this medium, indicating that the processes which occur on the alloy surface are mainly governed by copper. EIS response was related to the dielectric and transmission properties of the complex oxide layer. The CVs showed peaks concerning the redox reactions for copper and zinc. These peaks were assigned to the formation and reduction of copper and zinc species. Furthermore, they showed that the copper oxidation was suppressed by the presence of zinc and aluminum in the alloy composition. The copper and zinc oxidation to form complex oxide layers and the reduction of the different metallic oxides generated in the anodic potential scan suggest that a solid state reaction could determine the metallic oxide formation. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. A simple one-step electrodeposition method was used to construct a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), which has been modified with Cu doped gold nanoparticles (GNPs), i.e. a Cu@AuNPs/GCE. This electrode was characterized with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The eugenol was electrocatalytically oxidized at the Cu@AuNPs/GCE. At this electrode, in comparison with the behavior at the GCE alone, the corresponding oxidation peak current was enhanced and the shift of the oxidation potentials to lower values was observed. Electrochemical behavior of eugenol at the Cu@AuNPs/GCE was investigated with the use of the cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique, and additionally, in order to confirm the electrochemical reaction mechanism for o-methoxy phenols, CVs for catechol, guaiacol and vanillin were investigated consecutively. Based on this work, an electrochemical reaction mechanism for o-methoxy phenols was suggested, and in addition, the above Cu@AuNPs/GCE was successfully employed for the analysis of eugenol in food samples.

The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based microelectrode (ME) by modifying CNTs-room temperature ionic liquid (IL) gel at carbon fiber microelectrode (CFME) is easily prepared, which exhibits the typical cyclic voltammogram of ME with sigmoid shape and possesses good stability, high conductivity and enlarged current response and tunable dimension. The direct electron transfer of glucose oxidase has been greatly promoted showing reversible electrochemical behavior even at high scan rate. In addition, the CNTs based ME also exhibits effectively electrocatalytic oxidized ability to biomolecules, e.g. dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA) and dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. The obvious separation of oxidized peak potential for DA and AA makes it possible to selectively determine DA in presence of AA. These phenomena show that the CNTs based ME has promising potential to detect various species in vivo and in vitro.

The effect of La3+ on the electrochemical behavior and structure of heme undecapeptide-microperoxidase-11 (MP-11)-in the aqueous solution was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, circular dichroism (CD) and UV-vis absorption spectrometry. It was found for the first time that La3+ would promote the electrochemical reaction of MP-11 at the glassy carbon (GC) electrode. This is mainly due to the fact that La3+ would induce more beta-turn and alpha-helical conformations from the random coil conformation of MP-11 and increase the non-planarity of the heme.

An electrode modified with a polybasic lanthanide heteropoly tungstate/molybdate complex K10H3[Nd(SiMo7W4O39)(2)] entrapped into polypyrrole (PPy) film, denoted as Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy, exhibits three couples of two-electron redox waves in pH 1-5 buffer solutions. The redox waves are surface-controlled at lower scan rates and diffusion-controlled at higher scan rates. The effects of pH on the electrochemical behavior of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2) in PPy film were investigated in detail and compared with that of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2) in aqueous solution. The various charge states of PPy during its redox process have peculiar effects on the relationship between pH and formal potentials of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy at different acidities. The Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy cme can remarkably catalyze the electrochemical reduction of bromate with good stability. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Detection of DNA is a very important task for molecular biology and biomedical field. We have investigated electrochemical behavior of double-stranded DNA and single-stranded DNA adsorbed on conducting polymer modified electrode in presence of cobalt complex. The possibility of using such electrode as gene detector is discussed.

The electrochemical behavior of the electroactive self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of thiol-functionalized viologen, CH3(CH2)(9)V2+(CH2)(8)SH, where V2+ is a viologen group, on the gold electrodes is examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical a.c. impedance. A monolayer of viologen is immobilized on the gold electrode surface via the Au-S bond and the normal potentials corresponding to the two successive one-electron transfer processes of the viologen active centers are -310 mV and -652 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) in 0.1 mol l(-1) phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.96) respectively. These results suggest that the viologen SAMs are stable and well-behaved monolayers. The experimental impedance data corresponding to different forms of viologen group have been fitted to equivalent electrical circuits, and the surface capacitances and resistances have been given. The heterogenous electron transfer rates of the first and the second redox processes are 7.57 s(-1) and 1.49 s(-1) respectively through a.c. impedance.

The electrochemical behavior of citalopram was studied by square-wave and square-wave adsorptive-stripping voltammetry (SWAdSV). Citalopram can be reduced and accumulated at a mercury drop electrode, with a maximum peak current intensity being obtained at a potential of approximately -1.25V vs. AgCl/Ag, in an aqueous electrolyte solution of pH 12. A SWAdSV method has been developed for the determination of citalopram in pharmaceutical preparations. The method shows a linear range between 1.0x10-7 and 2.0x10-6 mol L-1 with a limit of detection of 5x10-8 mol L-1 for an accumulation time of 30 s. The precision of the method was evaluated by assessing the repeatability and intermediate precision, achieving good relative standard deviations in all cases (≤2.3%). The proposed method was applied to the determination of citalopram in five pharmaceutical products and the results obtained are in good agreement with the labeled values.

A series of mono(eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl)metal-(II) complexes with nitro-substituted thienyl acetylide ligands of general formula [M(eta(5)-C5H5)(L)(C C{C4H2S}(n)NO2)] (M = Fe, L = kappa(2)-DPPE, n = 1,2; M = Ru, L = kappa(2)-DPPE, 2 PPh3, n = 1, 2; M = Ni, L = PPh3, n = 1, 2) has been synthesized and fully characterized by NMR, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior of the complexes was explored by cyclic voltammetry. Quadratic hyperpolarizabilities (beta) of the complexes have been determined by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) measurements at 1500 nm. The effect of donor abilities of different organometallic fragments on the quadratic hyperpolarizabilities was studied and correlated with spectroscopic and electrochemical data. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations were employed to get a better understanding of the second-order nonlinear optical properties in these complexes. In this series, the complexity of the push pull systems is revealed; even so, several trends in the second-order hyperpolarizability can still be recognized. In particular, the overall data seem to indicate that the existence of other electronic transitions in addition to the main MLCT clearly controls the effectiveness of the organometallic donor ability on the second-order NLO properties of these push pull systems.

Cyclic voltammetry and ultraviolet−visible/infrared (UV−vis/IR) spectroelectrochemistry were used to study the cathodic electrochemical behavior of the osmium complexes mer-[OsIII(CO) (bpy)Cl3] (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) and trans(Cl)-[OsII(CO) (PrCN)(bpy)Cl2] at variable temperature in different solvents (tetrahydrofuran (THF), butyronitrile (PrCN), acetonitrile (MeCN)) and electrolytes (Bu4NPF6, Bu4NCl). The precursors can be reduced to mer-[OsII(CO) (bpy•−)Cl3]2− and trans(Cl)-[OsII(CO)(PrCN) (bpy•−)Cl2]−, respectively, which react rapidly at room temperature, losing the chloride ligands and forming Os(0) species. mer-[OsIII(CO) (bpy)Cl3] is reduced in THF to give ultimately an Os−Os-bonded polymer, probably [Os0(CO) (THF)-(bpy)]n, whereas in PrCN the well-soluble, probably mononuclear [Os0(CO) (PrCN)(bpy)], species is formed. The same products were observed for the 2 electron reduction of trans(Cl)-[OsII(CO)(PrCN) (bpy)Cl2] in both solvents. In MeCN, similar to THF, the[Os0(CO) (MeCN)(bpy)]n polymer is produced. It is noteworthy that the bpy ligand in mononuclear [Os0(CO) (PrCN)(bpy)] is reduced to the corresponding radical anion at a significantly less negative potential than it is in polymeric [Os0(CO) (THF)(bpy)]n: ΔE1/2 = 0.67 V. Major differences also exist in the IR spectra of the Os(0) species: the polymer shows a broad ν(CO) band at much smaller wavenumbers compared to the soluble Os(0) monomer that exhibits a characteristic ν(Pr-CN) band below 2200 cm−1 in addition to the intense and narrow ν(CO) absorption band. For the first time, in this work the M0-bpy(M = Ru, Os) mono- and dicarbonyl species soluble in PrCN have been formulated as a mononuclear complex. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent-DFT calculations confirm the Os(0) oxidation state and suggest that [Os0(CO)(PrCN)(bpy)] is a square planar moiety. The reversible bpy-based reduction of [Os0(CO) (PrCN)(bpy)] triggers catalytic reduction of CO2 to CO and HCOO−.
