The authors present the observation of wide transmission dips in a microring channel drop filter by two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulation. The authors show that distributed mode coupling between the input waveguide and the resonator results in the oscillations of the coupling efficiency and the envelope of transmission spectra with wavelength. The critical coupling as the light just passing through the coupling region is important for optimizing related devices. If the width of the input waveguide is different from that of the ring resonator, the phenomenon can be greatly reduced. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

A 1.3-mu m AlGaInAs/InP buried heterostructure (BH) stripe distributed feedback laser with a novel AlInAs/InP complex-coupled grating grown by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (LP-MOCVD) is proposed and demonstrated. A high characteristic temperature (T-0 = 90K between 20-80 degrees C) and temperature-insensitive slope efficiency (0.25 dB drop from 20 to 80 degrees C) in 1.3 mu m AlGaInAs/InP DFB lasers was obtained by introducing AI(Ga)InAs graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure (GRINSCH) layers and a strained-compensated (SC) multi-quantum well (MQW).

In this paper, the SiC-based clamped-clamped filter was designed and fabricated. The filter was composed of two clamped-clamped beam micromechanical resonators coupled by a spring coupling beam. Structural geometries, including the length and width of the resonator beam and coupling beam, were optimized by simulation for high frequency and high Q, under the material properties of SiC. The vibrating modes for the designed filter structure were analyzed by finite element analysis (FEA) method. For the optimized structure, the geometries of resonator beams and coupling beams, as well as the coupling position, the SiC-based clamped-clamped filter was fabricated by surface micromaching technology.

An effective coupling efficient is introduced for gain-coupled distributed feedback lasers with absorptive grating. When radiation and other partial wave coupling effects are considered, the effective coupling coefficient will change significantly. In some cases, it will become real, although both loss and index coupling are presented.

A novel self-aligned coupled waveguide (SACW) multi-quantum-well (MQW) distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser is proposed and demonstrated for the first time. By selectively removing the MQW layer and leaving the low SCH/SACW layer the Bragg grating is partially formed on this layer. By optimizing the thickness of the low SCH/SACW layer, a ~80% coupling efficiency between the MQW gain region and the passive region are obtained. The typical threshold current of the SACW DBR laser is 39 mA, the slope efficiency can reach to 0.2 mW/mA and the output power is more than 20 mW with a more than 30dB side mode suppression ratio.

A novel coupled distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) with double thickness periods was theoretically analyzed based on the spontaneous radiation properties of high brightness AlGaInP light emitting diodes(LED). Several important factors were considered including spontaneous radiation angle distribution, absorption and FTR of DBR. Calculation results showed that the optimum optical thickness of single layer of the DBR deviates from 1/4 lambda. AIGaInP high brightness light emitting diodes both with Al0.5Ga0.5As/AlAs coupled DBR and with conventional DBR were fabricated by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD). X-ray double crystal diffraction and reflection spectrum were employed to determine the thickness and reflectivity of the DBR. It was found that reflectivity of coupled DBR is less sensitive to incident angle than conventional DBR, higher external quantum efficiency of light emitting diodes with coupled DBR was obtained than that with conventional DBR.

1.3 mu m strained-layer multi-quantum wells complex-coupled distributed feedback lasers with a wide temperature range of 20 to 100 degrees C are reported. The low threshold current of 10mA and high single-facet slope efficiency of 0.3mW/mA were obtained for an as cleaved device. The single mode yield was as high as 80%.

Coupling with bionic principles, an attempt to improve the wear resistance of ball bearing steel (GCr15) with biomimetic units on the surface was made using a pulsed Nd: YAG laser. Air and water film was employed as processing medium, respectively. The microstructures of biomimeitc units were examined by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction was used to describe the microstructure and identify the phases as functions of different mediums as well as water film with different thicknesses. The results indicated that the microstructure zones in the biomimetic specimens processed with water film were more refined and had better wear resistance increased by 55.8% in comparison with that processed in air; a significant improvement in microhardness was achieved by laser surface melting. The application of water film provided considerable microstructural changes and much more regular grain shape in biomimetic units, which played a key role in improving the wear resistance of ball bearing steel. We consider the problem of architecting a reliable content delivery system across an overlay network using TCP connections as the transport primitive. We first argue that natural designs based on store-and-forward principles that tightly couple TCP connections at intermediate end-systems impose fundamental performance limitations, such as dragging down all transfer rates in the system to the rate of the slowest receiver. In contrast, the ROMA architecture we propose incorporates the use of loosely coupled TCP connections together with fast forward error correction techniques to deliver a scalable solution that better accommodates a set of heterogeneous receivers. The methods we develop establish chains of TCP connections, whose expected performance we analyze through equation-based methods. We validate our analytical findings and evaluate the performance of our ROMA architecture using a prototype implementation via extensive Internet experimentation across the PlanetLab distributed testbed.

The beta-adrenergic receptor kinase (beta ARK) phosphorylates the agonist-occupied beta-adrenergic receptor to promote rapid receptor uncoupling from Gs, thereby attenuating adenylyl cyclase activity. Beta ARK-mediated receptor desensitization may reflect a general molecular mechanism operative on many G-protein-coupled receptor systems and, particularly, synaptic neurotransmitter receptors. Two distinct cDNAs encoding beta ARK isozymes were isolated from rat brain and sequenced. The regional and cellular distributions of these two gene products, termed beta ARK1 and beta ARK2, were determined in brain by in situ hybridization and by immunohistochemistry at the light and electron microscopic levels. The beta ARK isozymes were found to be expressed primarily in neurons distributed throughout the CNS. Ultrastructurally, beta ARK1 and beta ARK2 immunoreactivities were present both in association with postsynaptic densities and, presynaptically, with axon terminals. The beta ARK isozymes have a regional and subcellular distribution consistent with a general role in the desensitization of synaptic receptors.

A novel 3rd-order compact E-plane ridge waveguide filter is presented. Miniaturization is achieved upon introducing a configuration of parallel-coupled E-plane ridge waveguide resonators. Furthermore, the proposed filter allows for transmission zeros at finite frequencies. Fabrication simplicity and mass producibility of standard E-plane filters is maintained. The numerical and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed configuration. A miniaturisation factor of 2 and very sharp upper cutoff are achieved. 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A novel resonator-based bandpass Σ-Δ modulator with an in-built variable centre frequency feature is presented. This structure is designed by analytically determining and subsequently verifying through behavioural level simulations the necessary compensation hardware to be placed in the feedback to ensure stability and good dynamic range performance.

This paper presents a methodology for the design of oversampled narrow-band single-loop and multi-stage resonator-based bandpass Σ-Δ modulators that can accommodate different passband centre to sampling frequency ratios. These tunable bandpass configurations are designed by analytically determining the required compensation hardware to deliver good resolution. Thorough simulations demonstrate that comparatively superior in-band signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and dynamic ranges (DRs) are attributed to the inclusion of appropriate feedforward and feedback compensators within these structures.
