The pervasive use of the World Wide Web by the general population has created a cultural shift in our living world. It has enabled more people to share more information about more events and issues in the world than was possible before its general use. As a consequence, it has transformed traditional news medias approach to almost every aspect of journalism, with many organisations restructuring their philosophy and practice to include a variety of participatory spaces/forums where people are free to engage in deliberative dialogue about matters of public importance. Moreover, while news media were the traditional gatekeepers of information, today many organisations allow, to different degrees, the general public and other independent journalism entities to participate in the news production process, which may include agenda setting and content production. This paper draws from an international collective case study that showcases various approaches to networked online news journalism. It examines the ways in which different traditional news media models use digital tools and technologies for participatory communication of information about matters of public interest. The research finds differences between the ways in which public service, commercial and independent news media give voice to the public and ultimately their approach to journalisms role as the Fourth Estateone of the key institutions of democracy. The work is framed by the notion that journalism in democratic societies has a key role in ensuring citizens are informed and engaged with public affairs. An examination of four media models, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the Guardian, News Limited and OhmyNews, showcases the various approaches to networked online news journalism and how each provides different avenues for citizen empowerment. The cases are described and analysed in the context of their own social, political and economic setting. Semi-structured in-depth interviews with key senior journalists and editors provide specific information on comparisons between the distinctive practices of their own organisation. In particular these show how the ideal of democracy can be used as a tool of persuasion as much as a method of deliberation.

In political journalism, the battle over agenda-setting between journalists and their sources has been described using many metaphors and concepts. Herbert Gans saw it as a dance where the two parties competed for leadership, arguing that sources usually got the lead. We address the question of how social media, in particular Twitter, contribute to media agenda-building and agenda-setting by looking at how tweets are sourced in election campaign coverage in Australia, Norway and Sweden. Our findings show that the popularity of elite political sources is a common characteristic across all countries and media. Sourcing from Twitter reinforces the power of the political elites to set the agenda of the news media they are indeed still leading the dance. Twitter content travels to the news media as opinions, comments, announcements, factual statements, and photos. Still, there are variations that must be explained both by reference to different political and cultural characteristics of the three countries, as well as by the available resources and journalistic profiles of each media outlet.

Soft power has been a concept that has generated great political and scholarly interest in China, as it raises the question of how to achieve cultural standing commensurate with the nations growing economic significance. But from the perspectives of communication and cultural studies, we can identify limits with both soft power as a concept and how it understands culture and communication, and the assumptions made about the capacities of state cultural promotion through media to appeal to global audiences. Drawing upon case studies of the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, India, Japan and South Korea, this article identified challenges and opportunities for China in growing its international cultural soft power in a post-globalisation era.

A tese constitui uma discusso terico-conceitual de natureza eminentemente qualitativa sobre a construo cultural dos chamados critrios de noticiabilidade no jornalismo. Sua proposta central inserir a problemtica da noticiabilidade isto , a discusso em torno dos parmetros que levam determinados acontecimentos a receber a valorao de notcia em detrimento de outros no interior de uma reflexo mais ampla, de ordem culturalista, que objetiva dimensionar a narrativa noticiosa como um dos elementos esttico-expressivos mais consistentes na sustentao da experincia cotidiana moderna. Como objetivos especficos, busca-se: 1) a discusso terica de algumas das mais significativas abordagens conceituais que os critrios de noticiabilidade recebem historicamente nas cincias sociais; 2) a apresentao de um conjunto alternativo de concepes tericas que, articuladas, possam explicitar a complexidade do processo de seleo noticiosa; e 3) a proposio de uma sistematizao terico-conceitual para tais articulaes de modo a sintonizar a tese com o estado da arte no campo da teoria do jornalismo. Aporta-se, ao fim, na elaborao de um modelo explicativo pendular que se institui como metfora possvel para a relao entre o jornalismo, os paradoxos cotidianos e os parmetros simblicos que caracterizam a regularidade cotidiana como padro cultural da sociabilidade moderna.

This dissertation explores how two American storytellers, considered by many in their to be exemplary in their craft, rely on narrative strategies to communicate to their audiences on divisive political topics in a way that both invokes feelings of pleasure and connection and transcends party identification and ideological divides. Anna Quindlen, through her political columns and op-eds, and Aaron Sorkin, through his television show The West Wing, have won over a politically diverse fan base in spite of the fact that their writing espouses liberal political viewpoints. By telling stories that entertain, first and foremost, Quindlen and Sorkin are able to have a material impact on their audiences on both dry and controversial topics, accomplishing that which 19th Century writer and activist Harriet Farley made her practice: writing in such a way to gain the access necessary to do good by stealth. This dissertation will argue that it is their skilled use of storytelling elements, which capitalize on the cultural relationship humans have with storytelling, that enables Quindlen and Sorkin to achieve this. The dissertation asks: How do stories shape the beliefs, perspectives, and cognitive functions of humans? How do stories construct culture and interact with cultural values? What is the medias role in shaping society? What gives stories their power to unite as a medium? What is the significance of the experience of reading or hearing a well-told story, of how it feels? What are the effects of Quindlens and Sorkins writing on audience members and the political world at large? What is lost when a simplistic narrative structure is followed? Who is left out and what is overlooked? The literature that informs the answers to these questions will cross over and through several academic disciplines: American Studies, British Cultural Studies, Communication, Folklore, Journalism, Literature, Media Studies, Popular Culture, and Social Psychology. The chapters will also explore scholarship on the subjects of narratology and schema theory.

El presente proyecto ha sido realizado con la mentalidad de la Elaboracin de un suplemento turstico-cultural para Diario Portada de la ciudad de Azogues, complemento representativo para la ciudad mediante varios temas como: reportajes, artculos y entretenimiento. De acuerdo con las encuestas realizadas, la gente no conoce ningn medio de comunicacin dentro de la ciudad que posea un suplemento, es por eso que se lo cre, para la distribucin de dos ediciones. Cada una de las fotografas y la redaccin fueron realizadas por las ejecutoras del proyecto, con la idea de que vaya evidencia del trabajo realizado. Este trabajo est complementado con la investigacin terica de varios y prestigiosos autores que han sido y son expertos en la materia de la comunicacin social y el periodismo, y que debidamente han sido citadas en cada uno de los captulos. Logramos el objetivo con el apoyo de varias personas; la ciudadana y del medio de comunicacin en conjunto con sus directivos. As como tambin con el apoyo del Sr. Rafael Santos, quin con su asesora complement el proyecto con la diagramacin del suplemento en sus dos ediciones, el mismo que no tendr ningn costo econmico para los lectores, pues circular como un aporte adicional en el Diario y al mismo costo.

No existe en Cuenca un proyecto de investigacin periodstica y de produccin audiovisual que indague, recopile y presente informacin sobre aquellas profesiones tradicionales heredadas a travs del tiempo y que poco a poco se van perdiendo con miras a extinguirse completamente. Este proyecto, de cierta manera, puede ser innovador, ya que involucra dos reas: comunicacin audiovisual y redaccin dentro del periodismo. Se involucran por el hecho de presentar informacin relevante, a travs de un producto final, visual y escrito, que ensee de quforma estas profesiones son desarrolladas por diferentes actores humanos, sus contextos y sus procesos, con la intencin de servir de apoyo investigativo cultural en el mbito local y nacional.
