In this article I analize the novel Los héroes impuros by the Costa Rican authoress Rosibel Morera. The analytical categories used include, from the elimination of absolute historical facts, all the way to the notion of eternal return (Mircea Eliade), processes of idolization, and the various symbols appearing on the text. Examination of these categories shows the characters´ duality because of their universality, and also the worldview and the conception of literature held by Morera.

ResumenEn este trabajo se hace un análisis desde la creación de la Diócesis de Nicaragua y Costa Rica (1531-1850) hasta que se divide en 1850, cuya organización se basó en las disposiciones del Patronato Real y los acuerdos del Concilio de Trento (1545). De igual manera, se estudia el papel de los obispos que estuvieron al frente de la dirección de la diócesis y también son objeto de investigación los conflictos internos, en especial los que ocurrieron con la provincia de Costa Rica.AbstractThis work sets forth an analysis made of the Nicaraguan and Costa Rican Diocese (1531-1850) from its creation up to its division in 1850. It was established based on the resolutions of the Royal Patronage (Patronato Real) and the accords of the Council of Trent (1545). Likewise, research is carried out on the role played by the bishops that geared the Diocese, as well as on the internal conflicts, especially those that occurred in the province of Costa Rica.

ResumenCon el presente artículo se pretende, por un lado, caracterizar la dinámica de la productividad agrícola en una región en proceso mismo de colonización, como era el caso de la región norte de Costa Rica; y por otro lado, aportar insumos de carácter regional que permitan posteriormente, elaborar análisis comparativos que ayuden a esclarecer las verdaderas dimensiones de la especialización o diversificación del agro costarricense.AbstractThis article is aimed, on the one hand, at pointing out the changes in agricultural productivity in a region undergoing a settlement process, as was the case of the northern region of Costa Rica; and on the other hand, at providing data at the regional level that will allow for subsequent comparative analyses that will help clarify the real scope of specialization or diversification of the Costa Rican agricultural activities.

La Iglesia católica desde que llegó al continente americano de la mano de los conquistadores y colonizadores europeos, desempeñó tareas vinculadas con el control y vigilancia de la población que aquí habitaba. Esta labor la siguió desempeñando luego de la independencia de las colonias españolas. El presente artículo pretende dilucidar cómo se estableció la colaboración brindada al estado por parte de la jerarquía del catolicismo costarricense luego de erigida la Diócesis de San José hasta el fin del obispado josefino en 1920 en las tareas de controlar, vigilar y apropiarse tanto -del espacio geográfico considerado como costarricense, como de los habitantes que residían en dichos territorios. Por ello se analizará cuáles fueron y como utilizó la jerarquía de la Iglesia católica costarricense los mecanismos de control que tenía a su disposición para alcanzar tales objetivos.Abstract This essay analyzes the collaboration of the Catholic Church with the Costa Rican State between the foundations of the Diocese of San José until 1920. lt shows how the Church helped to control, watch and take over the geographical space of Costa Rica and individual living in that land. It also studies mechanisms of control the Catholic Church carried out in this process.

Recibido 16 de julio de 2010 • Aceptado 31 de agosto de 2010 • Corregido 04 de octubre de 2010  Debido al marco jurídico actual, en los últimos años, el sistema educativo costarricense ha experimentado cambios significativos, tanto en los niveles internacional como nacional. Estos van desde la promulgación de la Ley 7600 Igualdad de Oportunidades para las Personas con Discapacidad en Costa Rica (Costa Rica, Asamblea Legislativa,1996) hasta el planteamiento de la Ley 8661 Convención sobre los Derechos Humanos de las Personas con Discapacidad (Costa Rica, Asamblea Legislativa, 2008). Por lo anterior, el espacio temporal en el que emergió el Proyecto UNA Educación de Calidad, en 1998 y el contexto en el cual estaba inmerso el Sistema Educativo Nacional, particularmente, en el ámbito universitario, la propuesta pedagógica que se presenta da muestra de una transición entre el modelo rehabilitador y el modelo social, específicamente, dentro de cada uno de estos, el respectivo abordaje educativo, que abarca desde los procedimientos de la integración a los de la educación inclusiva. Desde esta perspectiva, se presenta las vivencias y estrategias desplegadas desde el Proyecto UNA Educación de Calidad. El fin es proporcionar apoyo y seguimiento, en su formación profesional, a un grupo de la diversidad, constituido por los estudiantes con necesidades educativas matriculados en la Universidad Nacional. De esta forma, se pretenden hacer efectivos sus derechos de acceder a una educación superior de calidad, de acuerdo con sus características personales y sociales, y promover su permanencia e inserción socio-laboral. Los retos que impone la atención a la diversidad en el contexto universitario son un desafío plasmado en el quehacer cotidiano del Proyecto UNA Educación de Calidad. Estas transformaciones se vislumbran en la constante reconstrucción de las estrategias utilizadas, al tener, como aspectos esenciales, el empleo de equipo tecnológico y programas de computación especializados. Estos les permitirán a los estudiantes acceder a la información y a la comunicación; la asesoría y la capacitación de los académicos y del personal administrativo; el establecimiento de estrategias de apoyo colaborativo entre los miembros de la comunidad universitaria, así como, la búsqueda de cooperación en el ámbito nacional e internacional para el desarrollo de nueva iniciativas.

This essay shows the reality of Costa Rican indigenous groups in terms of the mastery and promotion of their original tongue and the way this has been taken into account in the design of the curricula of their schools. In general, it is discussed that the educational process is developed disengaged of the idiomatic and cultural reality of these groups, even tough government efforts have been made in this direction. As a result of this educational deficiency, a cultural decline is generated that might end up with the loss of native languages.

In the current context of education, parents, students, teachers, media and other sectors of Costa Rican society, express concern about the problem of school violence, a social phenomenon that has been increasing in recent years. Its manifestations are perceived by means of abuse behavior, intimidation, verbal or physical abuse among youth, which are constructed through cultural practices. Therefore, to understand this problem, reflection about possible causes is in order, taking into account the context in which social interaction is developed in each school. Some of the manifestations of violence are rooted in the family, the community, the imitation of the behavioral patterns, and the influence of mass media. Moreover, these behaviors are reinforced by the current curriculum model, generating resistance to institutional rules.

The present article displays the results of a two-year research experience carried out by an interdisciplinary research team from the five academic departments (units) at CIDE. The study is part of a larger research project named Profiles, Dynamics and Challenges of Costa Rican education at CIDE, which is directed by the Deanery. The study was conducted during 2006 and part of 2007 in secondary schools which were identified as successful institutions regarding academic achievements. The research focused on exploring the factors which influence students’ academic performance positively as they move from primary to secondary school and as they remain within successful academic indicators during those transition years. This research, besides involving an important literature review, required field work which took place in ten secondary schools from diverse settings all over the country. Observations were made and the seventh and eighth graders’ beliefs, as well as, their parents’ and teachers’ assumptions were explored. In addition, paralleled to the aspects mentioned, an important population of sixth grade students, their parents, and teachers were studied, since those primary institutions were related to the secondary schools involved in the study.

Language teaching has become a priority in the Costa Rican educational system, considering it as a tool for communication and development of thought. Without language, there is no access to other curriculum disciplinary knowledge. A successful experience conducted some years ago, with students from 4th to 6th grade, was the basis for the design and implementation of a professional development activity addressed to promoting an integration strategy previously adjusted according to the Ministry’s requirements and the existing national regulations. This study is developed in the framework of a qualitative paradigm including research-action and systematization. A purposive sample was selected based on a suitability factor, through which individuals are informed about the strategy, and then the strategy is applied to a group of students from urban-marginal areas. The techniques used include literature review, analysis of curriculum and Ministry’s regulations, application of an in-depth interview, discussions from the course’s participant in a portfolio, and discussions from students to whom the strategy was applied. We analyzed the considerations of teachers and students, as well as the theoretical and regulatory information by triangulation. The study’s conclusion is the necessity of a communicative approach in language teaching and our recommendation is to implement the strategy developed in the Costa Rican classrooms as provided in this paper.

Los  espacios  rurales  durante  las  últimas  décadas  se  han  transformado  aceleradamente  producto  de cambios en las dinámicas económicas. Esta investigación realizada en la Fila Brunqueña, caracteriza la estructura del paisaje durante los años de 1960, 1972 y 2007, utilizando los índices biométricos como son el de forma, de borde, de tipo de uso, de tamaño de fragmento, de número de fragmento, los cuales se complementan con las variables de distribución de estos fragmentos en función de la pendiente y su localización con respecto a  los cuerpos de aguas superficiales. Se concluye que durante  los cuarenta últimos años se ha presentado una fuerte restauración ecológica, condiciones que están amenazadas en el actual desarrollo turístico.Palabras claves: Ecología del Paisaje, fragmentación de bosques, desarrollo turístico, Costa RicaAbstract:During  the  last decades,  rural spaces have  transformed  rapidly as  result of  the changes  in economic  dynamics. This investigation was carried out in Fila Brunqueña, Costa Rica, characterizing the structure of the landscape during the years 1960, 1972 and 2007, using biometric indexes such as form, borders, type of use, size of fragment and number of fragments. Those indexes are complemented with the distribution variables of these fragments in terms of slope of the land in relation to the rivers and creeks. This study concluded that during the last forty years there has been strong ecological restoration.
